Supposedly because it has a suspension that is tuned specifically for Sentul circuit (especially since the car rarely raced abroad so they can just stick with one setup). Thank you for exposing our automotive culture to the world. The reason why we can't import used car is, because people will import used cars from Singapore (due to their regulation as well) and it kinda kills the local automotive industry. But one interesting thing that differentiates us from Malaysia and Singapore, budget car enthusiast uses German cars such as the E36, W202, E39 or E46 due to the large engine displacement. With local assembled Japanese cars, you would only get the low/economy engine option, and you'll need to import engines.. Which end up you spending way more than playing with Mercs and BMWs. So yes, you'll see rich enthusiasts driving a S14 Silvia or 240SX, while you'll see budget drivers driving E46 325i.😅
Anything 4 door actually, E36 atau E46 tetap mahal mah kalau Coupe atau Wagon. But your point still stands.👍🏻 Not to mention there's "one guy" from Batam that able to send FTZ(read: Singapore) cars outside Riau islands. Things getting cheaper but still paperless nonetheless.
Dude... Victor truly inspires me to wanna take a chance and start (or join) a business working on cars. I'm also a mechanical engineer, and I have a passion for cars, but that inner fear of failure and judgement from others keeps me from taking that leap of faith. Even I ask myself, why would I leave my comfy salary job with benefits, to go work on cars that probably won't pay as much and might not have all the benefits that I currently have? Maybe one day, but I have to think about my family and make sure I can provide a good life for them today and secure a good future for my daughter.
If a desire has been placed inside your heart, it’s there for a reason. Right now, it seems like you’re reasoning yourself out of that reason. How much would you regret not giving it a shot when you’re in your 90s?
Hmmm, if everything is going fine and you've got a family to take care of, I'd say it's best to stick with your current job. But maybe you're able to save up and work on a private project car, as a mini version of that, hit up the local scene and stuff.

Wow! Good video! I used to drag raced my 4 barrel Toyota Kijang in Menteng, Jakarta on Saturday night back in early 90's. All I remember my country Indonesia had the highest car tax in the world at that time. Only rich peeps who worked in the government offices, foreign companies or entrepreneurs could afford to own nice cars . When I moved to US in 2000 I felt so lucky to be able to own several nice cars and rent quite new cars cheaply although I worked as a regular employee in a small company. Now I'm in JPN for more than 11 years and I find most people prefer tiny cars aka kei cars because of the narrow roads and expensive gas price. Most big engine used cars in JPN are cheaper compare to small ones because of zeikin / yearly tax and shaken / bi-yearly inspection. Once again, like you mentioned everything about cars in my country Indonesia is waaaay moaaar expensive than other countries
This level of car culture is indeed not accessible for most of us (Indonesians). The barrier to entry from the financial side is very high. It's more into the high level lifestyle, rather than a common one. Also the motoring culture here is different, most of us tend to travel with a lot of family members in a single car, which leads car makers to produce and inject reasonably priced MPVs and vans to the local market. However, social media platforms help us to know car cultures from many countries in the world, which keep our dream alive, of one day having one of these cars in our garage and take care of it. Thanks Larry and Hagerty for coming!

As Indonesian and car enthusiast, It's so sad that we are having hard time living our hobby. Cars and parts are not really affordable compared to our monthly income. And the worst thing is, most of the government and other political people live a luxury life, have luxury cars, but I don't think they're enthusiast enough about cars
Fun fact about that Pagani Huayra, it's called the Kurota Copper, only one exist in the entire world, it's a second hand, and it took 6 months for Pagani to develop that copper color

nah, I'm 100% honest, I'm from Indonesia, and I'm very disappointed and very jealous of everybody having a GR toyota. My dream car is the Toyota GR Yaris and for 2 years I begged my parents to at least buy 1 for my college or smth. I want to modify my GR Yaris to the rally 1 WRC version to rally and drift with like in my profile picture, for now, I can just dream of having it because they're discontinued here, I'm just a teenager and If I receive a challenge for a GR Yaris, I'll accept it immediately. Now. I'm between 10 and 15 yrs. old right now, and I haven't got a driver's license yet, but I'll definitely will, everytime I went to a Toyota dealership with my dad, I'd always ask... "where is the GR Yaris? Can I look at it?" The price is around $150,000 USD over here, so I basically gave up and just hope someday I'll get my dream car. And also, this is my all time dream car, I won't be changing my dream car ever in my life, it's just the GR Yaris.
Yeah. 3 years ago I bought my own car. a 1995 Civic sedan. It's heartbreaking to me that a lot of my friends still can't afford one. I had to work two jobs to get it too...

They dont give a F about car enthusiasts, as long theyre bought a luxury car like maybach, rubicon,or crown.. they just dont give a F
Not until we chopped their he*ds.
We're hopeless & helpless..
😂😂😂
Work with what you have, don't give up! Indonesia really has the talent and youth to make its own car scene.
The shine surfaces on these cars is just mind blowing 😲
Beautiful video as always 👍
Fun fact about that Pagani Huayra, it's called the Kurota Copper, only one exist in the entire world, it's a second hand, and it took 6 months for Pagani to develop that copper color
i find it stupid to say one of a kind just due to paint colour as that means i can turn a shitty Toyota into a one of a kind as well XD
my motorbike only one exist in the entire world as it has a sticker and a custom paint job XD
@@sydneyconcerts902 *with right hand. The only kuota copper right hand made
@@sydneyconcerts902 broo, really?
This whole series has opened my eyes to something we don't see in the upper midwest... It certainly starts to explains the culture! I know your eye for photos, but to bring this narrative to life, in such a way, is genius! Thanx !
This video was amazing and refreshing. Made me feel real good about my recent purchase of a 1987 Fairlady 200ZR II. Still waiting for it to leave Japan though.
drift track in the middle of the city ! what ! indonesia is sick ! 🔥🔥🔥and cars are sick !
Mantap klo udh masuk hagerty mah lah👍
Iya bang
EDAN COK! di liput Hagerty!
mad respect to Larry Chen!
My first car was a used Toyota Starlet, bought in Florida in 1985.
Kudos to the filmmakers for capturing the essence of car culture and reminding us that it knows no limits.
Best episode ever, much respect ❤
This is amazing. Thanks to Larry for your humble approach and obvious passion for this culture that you share with us, and thanks to Hagerty for giving us exactly the kind of content we want.
Very huge thank for coming to Indonesia...
I'm an indonesian, but actually Japan and Thailand are crazier than indonesia. This is all because Indonesia has relatively high taxes, and it has a significant impact on our country, which is mostly comprised of lower-middle-class individuals. And what you see in the video is mostly upper-middle-class people from our country. And fun fact, our culture inspired by Japan, US, Euro.
Sorry for my bad english 🥲
Tax issue and import law.
Indo and Singapore really potential to be more than Thailand.
But yeah, both of the country it's the worst country for car enthusiast
@@MazdaMiata-mn4hh agree
Very cool video! Thanks. I love learning about other countries and their cultures and how it’s related to cars.
Finally... We're on the MAP!! Thank you so much!
that evo .. so great seeing other cultures just working with what they have. makes me want to do more with my rio fwd daily project. keep it up
Makasih bang
Udah buat edukasi tentang car culture di indonesia
Membuat indonesia jadi lebih keliatan keren
Saya bangga jadi orang indonesia
Love your video dude🫡
That there is a McLaren Senna is impressive
yeah we have 5 of em i think in the country, 2 of em belong to the same person (one being the white one in this vid)
@@floatingaxedrop there's a few Senna in Singapore that own by indo guy, if they bring to Indonesia probably around 8+
@@MazdaMiata-mn4hh people think car taxes in Singapore is crazy but they don’t see how mad Indonesian government while taxing their citizen’s cars. being the top car producer in the southeast asia but give shtton of taxes on car, i know it’s related to crazy traffic jams on every capital in Indonesia but still… we want car equality…. 😢
this is the perfect mix of info + photos - we love you Larry - Hagerty did good here
that starlet gt turbo is absolute fire kidd machine son 💯💪
Thankyou for coming to Indonesia 🇮🇩
After any exhaust or motor mod I’ve always had someone else drive the vehicle to hear it down the block at wot!! respect to that pagani owner!
Appreciate that Larry, hopefully you enjoyed the car culture in Indonesia
"for the environment, i hope it works" it didn't work and he proceeded to yeet the tree away 🤣🤣🤣
11:30 thank you so much for mentioning this ❤
I've learned lots of knowledges of how to built proper cars few years ago from both Victor & Luckas....I had 2 datsuns for track back in the days, and one of them was the 510 that had the 6-points seamless rollcage installed under the OEM car ceiling unremoved crafted by XS (most people said that it's the only race car with the ceiling fabric installed above the rollcage here in Indonesia)....And the 510 was the only retro race car using the original NA Nissan L16 engine with no stroke-up that could beat 4ag's & still road-legal ;)
Thankyou for coming..
Thank you Larry !
Larry Chen in PIK is something I didn’t expect to see today
I absolutely love the car scene there! I love it here in Malaysia too!
Cant believe Larry hasnt come over to Bangkok and film the Thai scene yet.
anjaaaas.....
horang2 kayah pade ngumpul di mari....
Bandung car culture is a mad world too, a lot of them are great grandpa exotic cars, you might see some light tank there.
Huge Respect to all the Guys, the Enthusiasts of 🇮🇩 Indonesia!!! 👏🏽
My gf lives in Semarang. Indonesia. Not intereste in niche drift racing but it is nice to see some hopped up cars.
Awesome video i like this channel. Have a good time all team and members Hagerty group
DAMNN Indomie engine cover is 🔥🔥
Earned yourself a new sub. Glad the algorithm brought me here. Did not disappoint.
Respect.
Thank yoy Larry for bringing the engine+ workshop and starlet GT. That is real pocket rocket for car! The classic with color and the looks!! Wicked!!
Yes nuff respect to Larry and hagerty for filming a Starlet GT! wish he got to see the 89 -91 version
I saw that exact Pagani pass my car on the way home from school..
as an Indonesian I'm happy that you covered my country. car culture here is very small and whenever a meet happens, its like a big event. I have been a lover of all things cars and wish to own these cool JDM's, Exotics, and Race cars but they are all so expensive and I really wish Indonesia will get rid of the dumb import law so that we could at least get a cool car for a reasonable price.
I agree
Wee indo
Thank you for show casing and giving exposure to my dear friends over at indonesia, they work incredibly hard and are so humble. They truely set a precedence to the passion of building, maintaining and enjoying automobiles. They love life and channel it into their passion. Im just sad I missed out on this trip 😅
Hagerty: Larry, what did you see when you visit an Indonesian car shop there?
Larry: umm...some Jeeps with an Evo, Supra, and Nissan GTR R35 engine in it.
😁
i recently employed at xs automotive as a photographer. great workplace, great guys, great cars. still having a "hard" time every time i see these cars. if you guys ever want to come here again, be sure to take jason with you pls!
Love indonesia ❤❤
Nusantara (Indonesia, brunei, malaysia) motor sport scene is such a sleeper scene. You don't realize their existence until they get past you
Malaysia not Nusa/island , this peninsula.
Not Malaysia
Makasih bgt nih bang Lery, ane aja bru tau ada Pagani di Indonesia, mantep bang, rispek ❤
main lagi kemari bang.. Ajak temen2 hoonigan.. Sama om2 hagerty yg suka video time lapse turun mesin itu bang.. Mantep dia bang, salam yak, from Fakhri. Indonesia
*Check out Larry rocking that RTR "Fun Haver" team shirt!* 💪😎
unlike western countries, where the car culture is kinda part of the middle class citizen (or at least middle class citizens can get into car cultures easily), the automotive culture of the middle class here is about motorcycles; the car culture is reserved for the upper class citizens.
The Starlet is a really fun car to drive, even the stock one and the best part is they're cheap enough for middle class to own.
Exactly! They are like budget hot hatches, pretty fuel efficient too! Sadly they've gone up in price recently.
@@3kstra that's the annoying parts. luckily, I'm able to snag one before their price went up lol.
Can't believe hagerty covering my country car culture
coolest sit i've seen all day
thank you for visiting Indo ! we don't always have the best of everything, but we make do
Waww hagerty with the godly editing videos come to my country Indonesia, thx u
Western Market: 5k to 10k markups oh my god
SEA Buyers: When did cars become this damn cheap?
(cars are ridiculously overpriced in Asia)
Thanks for visiting 🇮🇩
damn. i sure that i didn't skip the video. You guys are are awesome for the story telling and all the b-roll, appreciate that
for an Indonesian i lil bit embarrassed when you tell them about the $350 salary and it's enough. But, it is what it is, right?
That’s a good reality check for anyone who’s taking home $1500. And barely able to live from it.
We should be proud of our government.
😂😂😂
nah, I'm 100% honest, I'm from Indonesia, and I'm very disappointed and very jealous of everybody having a GR toyota.
It's so heartbreaking that most of those Indonesian car guys can't have a car.
Yeah. 3 years ago I bought my own car. a 1995 Civic sedan. It's heartbreaking to me that a lot of my friends still can't afford one. I had to work two jobs to get it too...
an e36 318i on minimum wage is a years work
without food, amenities, and everything you need to live taken into account
Actually they are not car guys, but they are mechanics
Woaaah hagerty comes to Indonesia.. love to see the engine rebuild btw
Indonesia have a much culture, we have "cumi-cumi" it's mean squid, because we play with diesel engine, like innova, fortuner, pajero, and any else, we tune up and the angeni can flow some "ink" like squid...
and we have stance but we use normal car, passenger car. just use like avanza and any car's
if you need know much about culture, you need expand much time for know any culture hahaa
I think you should explore India too, though it’s not known for it but it’s there & would be something quite unique from your perspective if it’s done. Love this series though & others which Hagerty does. Great stuff you guys are doing.
Have been following Larry for several years, his work is awesome.
I try to have my own car here, with my own money. I bought myself a Civic 3 years ago. It really isn't easy. But i try.
