That Toyota next to the blue Beetle (0:55) is Kijang, which was Indonesia's best-selling car for years. Toyota Kijang to Indonesians is just like Ford midsize cars (Cortina-Sierra-Mondeo) to Europeans because not only being popular but also you can tell someone's social status by looking at its trim level. For example, Kijang LX means you really want a Kijang and want to get rid of your miserable Suzuki Carry but not having that much money, while Kijang Krista means you basically can afford (and being chauffeured in) a Mercedes but don't wanna be seen in one too often, so you decided to enter the 'stealth mode' in a Kijang instead
Kijang went from a farmer pickup car into a borderline luxury car. Kijang Innova Zenix now is for those who wanted an Alphard luxury but Land Cruiser toughness
@@muhammadsyukran1415 dude the "Kerjasama Indonesia Jepang" thing is only spread through meme and stuff. it's not confirmed by Toyota yet. It's more like an urban legend more like a Hoax even
Indonesia is a land cruiser hotspot… You’re just in the wrong event for a 4x4, but dig elsewhere in the country and you’ll know what I’m saying… Great job man
Thank you Larry for excellent video covering not only the event but also the parking lot. As you said, sometimes you see the real build and passion there. I like how you explained a bit of background about Indonesian car culture as well. If I may add, yes you can't import used cars and before 1999 you aren't even allowed to import a new car due to government rules that dictated all new cars must be assembled in Indonesia. So car selection before 1999 was very limited. Another burden is that since 2015 we can't import used car parts legally anymore. So finding parts is hard as well, not to mention relatively high shipping cost (compared to Malaysia for example) and fluctuating currency. But it's not all bad, our DMV didn't really had a strict rules so people can modify car without had to worry. Labour is quite cheap as well and we have many talented artist that can create or modify any parts (in fact building a whole car as well). 7:46 Just want to share about Starlet, yes they do have Turbo version of P70 Starlet (known as Starlet kotak or boxy Starlet in Indonesia) but it's for Japanese market only and the car you see is a convert using Turbo parts. The whole converting is a big deal here, because we often get lower spec models and to stand out people look for parts from other markets or their luxury/sporting trim. This is even more expensive than let's say custom bodywork. There are stories of converted cars costing more than what you would pay for the real one abroad. I think this is one of the unique aspect of Indonesian car culture that I seldom see anywhere. 8:20 You know, you create quite a stir here when you say you like Corolla Liftback. They aren't really popular back in the day and even now. It's unique because it is the first time that Corolla was offerred in Indonesia beside sedan body. Unfortunately buyers find the styling odd, after that many were in bad condition and some of the body parts were expensive so people avoid building one as the price isn't worth it. But now there are people that start to notice this car and it's quite rare ad well. With you saying how good this car is, I think it's add credibility. Glad that I see some of my friend there, like 4:29, the owner did drive it daily. He was inspired by long distance rally like London to Sydney. 9:18 is a close friend of mine, he is regarded as an expert on Corolla E70 here (known locally as Corolla DX), his brother also drives one too (as nice as the blue one) and he drives it daily. What interests me is that these guys are still young (mid 20s and early 30s) just to show you how dynamic the scene here. Offroad is really big scene in Indonesia, unfortunately many offroad guys prefer to just drive straight to forest rather than attending exhibition, I think you should cover one next time. They spent huge amount of money on offroading here. 12:20 A bit note on Nissan Pathfinder, they are sold locally as Terrano and it was assembled here from 1995 to 2006. There is only one engine variant which is 4 cylinder 2.4 litre petrol with carburator (yes, all the way to 2006). The one in your video is facelifted version that came in 2003, which is notable for crystal headlight and Altezza style rear light. 16:20 This car is actually Holden HQ Premier, the grille was replaced by Chevy style grille for export market (they are called Constantia grille in Indonesia). Holden are popular in the 70s as a long distance taxi. Unfortunately many didn't make it (it was known to be used in car crushing stunt in one of the big autojumble event here). This particular car is owned by Mr. Dewa of Pluto Garage, a well known Holden builder here, he swapped the engine with Chevy Small Block (of course) despite being quite expensive and rare, American and Australian car scene here is quite vibrant. 19:21 Just want to add the Mini Jaksel, they are not exactly formal club per se, it's a bunch of friends that like to hang out at Bunna (a popular location for car enthusiast in South Jakarta) that happens to own a Mini. For authoritative Mini club in Indonesia is Jakarta Mini Club, the largest and one of the oldest in Indonesia (I should know, I'm part with them). There is also another Mini club called Indonesia Coopret Registry (the Coopret is a bit of a joke, it's sounds like k*pret which is a slang that doesn't really have equivalent in English, probably sounds like s**t). In the end Larry, amazing work and I would love to see you visit Indonesia again. You probably didn't notice but your voice really being regarded here. Like your comment on Liftback or Brio that you really like (I don't know if you aware, that Brio was often mocked because the owner spends almost 30 grand on one, but after you review it, suddenly people praised it). I would be more than happy to guide you around Indonesian car culture, trust me, there are more gems here than people imagine. Wish you the best Larry, cheers.

It's because most people can't relate to supercars, like there's no point gushing over something you'll never even sit in let alone own, and even if you were lucky enough to own/drive one, most people would be too scared to drive them the way they're supposed to, so they just become something to flex in, which at the end of the day isn't that interesting.

Hey Larry , thats so cool to see your in Jakarta and found some odd cars you have never seen . The Chev 350 is actually a Holden Premier , Australia exported Holdens throughout all of South east Asia in the 70s-late 80s. Im glad you found one as they have massive Holden clubs over there and actually convert some of those into 2 doors , some actually resemble Camaros .
Yes the HQ is especially popular here, they were assembled in Indonesia using CKD kits from Australia. Kingswood has a reputation as a long distance taxi and Belmont was used heavily in oil industry.
Didn't care for that first Mini guy but the rest of the cars and people you interviewed were great and it's always great to see how car culture is in other parts of the world. I've following Japanese car culture more closely over the years than anywhere else outside the US but southeast Asia like Indonesia and Malaysia are very interesting too.
Holden Kingswood, many variants 4 door like that a 2 door, Monaro, Ute / use guys call pickup variant eg like an El Camino, many engine variants usually 6cyl to various V8 variants in all body models as well, was Australian made until they closed the Holden Factory in 2016, sad times. Also Sprinter variants of the Liftback were a JDM imported Corolla, most Asian countries including Australia and New Zealand got these new as a Corolla, in a hatchback similar to a Honda EG, not in looks but size. 2 or 4 door, then Lift-back was like the 2 you showed the twin cam and earlier model, I think they were fuel injected in the late 80s, Toyota in Japan and Asia was very ahead of it’s time in both twin cam and Fi, they also had the Corona range which was a bigger version model range with Sedan Liftback and Wagon Variants also usually 2.0L very popular and great cars to they replace aced it with the Camry which imo was stupid move, Corona was massively popular here, but back to the Corolla, I also maybe wrong on that 88 you pointed out, but Corollas usual had many body variants in these markets from Hatch, 2/4door, Liftback, Sedan and Wagon, 1.4l 1.6 and even 1.8L before 2.0l took over late 90s early 2000s obviously Mt and AT also we got the turbo Starlet here and you didn’t see one but another cool car was the Mitsubishi Turbo Cordia and the Mitsubishi a mirage Turbo, which was good at blowing up usually, but Cordias were sick as it was the Japanese answer to the Renault Fuego another cool car in it’s day. Great look at car culture they def do it right and would love you to check out the off road scene as well, def a 60series btw, unsure if they have used an 80s grill and lights or if it’s a late Gen end of line 60s before they went to the 80s, I own a 1HD-T 91 80series, 60s are very rare here now and very sought after both here and in Aussie, it’s the new black for off road Toyota collectors and ridiculous prices if you can find one. Cheers.
1:02 , its Toyota Kijang. Its an old car with a million memories, Indonesian Toyota's flagship. First Kijang was a pickup and Kijang was entered MPV Class and now Kijang was nicknamed Innova
We did get the AE92 Corolla/Sprinter liftback in the USA it was sold as the Geo Prism in Chevrolet dealers in the late 1980s - early 90s. The GSi trim level of the Prism even came with a 4A-GE.
I miss going to all the used performance parts stores where people would have gotten money for thier parts to buy something else ,but what an amazing place we would literally drive to 4 different store locations to see what each had and you could find so many badass parts .I moss Japan life all the street races like touge racing in the mountains of Otaku and surrounding areas or at the ports and of course the tracks and going to Hiroshima to sew the city and all the thousands of people
You had to see the rear as well, basically they add crystal headlight, that chrome grille and Altezza style rear lights straight out of 00s modification scene.
I owned one, a 2001 Indonesian model, 2WD Manual version like that in silver. It has a 2.4L 4cyl Carburetor. In Indonesia they called it the Terrano, basically the OG Pathfinder marketed in SEA and never really updated it besides some grille and light facelifts. It stopped in 2005/06 I think and we never really got a replacement.
because Indonesia still sold that Pathfinder generation (its called Nissan Terrano for Indonesia market) until 2006, even still with carbureted engine, that's crazy
Hi Larry, I'm from Indonesia, the Toyota you've seen next to the beetle is called Toyota Kijang (deer) is Indonesian most famous MPV with a long history (you should check out the kijang culture and history). That particular one famous as a nick name 'Kijang Kapsul (the capsule deer) as it's the first round body model. Unlike the older types which more boxy. The red sedan is a 70's Holden Kingswood (Australian car). Thank you for making this video and supporting Indonesian car culture! Peace!
I am enjoying all your videos of different countries, I am from the Philippines and I am digging the Indonesian car scene. Please visit the Philippines too.
Larry went full squirrel mode in this one... 😂😁🤟 Btw: that white Starlet Turbo SS really reminded me of my first car. It was a very boxy Nissan Micra 1.2 SS with similar spoiler, sideskirts and front lip. 740 kg of "fun" with a carburetor... 😜
Indonesia has a really good cars and mod taste but the problem is plot holes and speed bumps so they really need a adjustable suspension for it, but i think the majority of that slammed cars owner lived in that BSD area (South Tanggerang, not Jakarta as you said but its close to it) so the streets is safe for slammed cars.
Love this type of content Larry! Great Job!!! Really enjoy seeing the different types of cars and different ways that people modify them and make them unique and tasteful to their own likings!!! AWESOME!!!
it would be a cool idea for a series of videos if you went arround to lesser known car modding hot spots, instead of the ones we all already know and the main stream cultures, just finding out the wierd sub cultures spread around the world in lesser known places and see how they mod their cars there, like a lerry columbus finding out the hidden gems of the car world and giving them their place in history and showing them to the world, basically what you're doing in this video thanks for the videos and for showing us the wonders of all the facets of the world of motorsports and car culture in general, sadly i can't participate in it myself so getting to be around it like this makes it easier to bear

The 16:20 although badged as a Chevy, was a Holden and most sold in Indo had a Holden badge, but some were sold as Chevy. In the early 1970s (which is when this car dates from) Holden was second to only Toyota for sales in the Indonesian market but had left local assembly by about 1987.
The Corolla LiftBack you mentioned, I'd seen it in the US during my college in Eugene, OR that car was under Eagle brand. But I could only recalled the model Talon that share platform with the Mitsubishi Eclipse.
Larry, do you plan to go to South America someday(come to Brazil)? The car culture from down here is given close to zero visibility from the rest of the world and would be nice to have someone like you to explore and register the cool builds we have. You can hit the guys from Fueltech for help or Jamie Orr (even thoug he has more focus on the VW side of things). Greetings
5:56 the reason you will see more bmw and Mercedes its because they're a lot cheaper than some jdm. Jdm in Indonesia is mostly fill with old luxury car than supercar. Also German cars tends to get cheaper way more fast than jdm car.
0:55 That's the 3rd generation and Indonesian exclusive toyota kijang innova. It had diffrent name in diffrent country. Here we called it Kijang/Innova. In UK and India its called Qualis, Sourh africa as toyota stallion. And etc. Only sold on Some part of asia. But it worldwidely known as "Innova"
There are a lot of European cars because in Indonesia, they're actually the cheap entry-level enthusiast cars. The popular JDM cars like what you have in the US either didn't enter Indonesia entirely, or insanely expensive.
cars that are imported to indonesia are taxed progressively depending on their engine size, so most cars have the tiniest basic engine. They do 0-60 in a few business days. Even then these "indos" sure know how to soup up cars
Another rare car that available in Indonesia is Aston Martin Cabriole look's similiar to Ford Mustang Cabriole year 1970's in Indonesia and so the BMW M1 only 1 available
I don’t really understand why Brio couldn’t pass US regulations when Mitsubishi Mirage could. They’re practically the same car, maybe Brio is even better
that s class generation onwards all runs on air as stocks,(airmatic) higher spec, commonly on v12's and amg's (55,63,65) runs on hydraulics (abc) current gen (mbc)
I have a dream…..that Toyota Avanza, Mitsubishi Xpander, Toyota Fortuner, and Suzuki Ertiga will be loved and purchased by Americans and makes them the most sought car in USA. We Indonesians would like to export our products to North American Market. PASTI BISA!!!!
Hey Larry .when I lived in Japan for 8yrs in 1998 and after I r emember the Mini scene was huge they had the ones that looked more classic and decked out with the euro spec look and then they had ones that were wide body and had a liberty walk vibe to them and just alot of different looking ones bit yeah man they definetly had many out there and they were all so cool to appreciate and seen some wild engine swapped ones with full roll cage and even center seat steering too
Yes Japanese is really big with Mini, I remember reading old Car magazine from 1980s and apparently it's a combination of Japanese fondness of European and Retro product (mind you Cooper reborn in the 80s was due to demand from Japanede market. The size of it that makes Mini has lower tax (remember Japanese tax it's not just from engine capacity but also dimension) and last is how fun and easy to drive, in fact they are quite popular with woman in Japan. Thankfully because of this, Indonesian Mini scene rely on Japanese scrapyard to get Mini parts, few years ago Rover Mini conversion is a very popular modification among Indonesian Mini enthusiast.

I miss going to all the used performance parts stores where people would have gotten money for thier parts to buy something else ,but what an amazing place we would literally drive to 4 different store locations to see what each had and you could find so many badass parts .I moss Japan life all the street races like touge racing in the mountains of Otaku and surrounding areas or at the ports and of course the tracks and going to Hiroshima to sew the city and all the thousands of people
2005 pathfinder was the craziest thing to me lmao, they literally just threw a dinky plastichrome grille on and called it a day lmao
You had to see the rear as well, basically they add crystal headlight, that chrome grille and Altezza style rear lights straight out of 00s modification scene.
it is... and plastic bumper and crystal head and tail lights.. but it's so reliable tho.. because nothing on it..
Yeah, that early Recaros looking fantastic, even 50 years later.
These Wheels on the BMW calypso rot 5er are from AC-Schnitzer....
Done to perfection
That W220 Sclass (the blue one on Work wheels) is what I want my S55 to look like, so gorgeous
Larry went full squirrel mode in this one... 😂😁🤟
Btw: that white Starlet Turbo SS really reminded me of my first car.
That Mini crew is the Indonesian branch of the The Italian Job syndicate. 😅
Love this type of content Larry! Great Job!!! Really enjoy seeing the different types of cars and different ways that people modify them and make them unique and tasteful to their own likings!!! AWESOME!!!
Mini jaksel.. the most prestige car owners in south jakarta… very rich dudes… they all have nice collections of cars.. today they ride their minis..
I love JKT I visit there a few times a year for work a great car scene and super nice people always friendly and welcoming.
Great selection, the 505 right at the beginning is boss. But what surprised me the most is the Chevrolet Spin at 11:01
how interesting they are in a car show but many of them didn't know you. what a miss you are legend bro. i also from jakarta
You should visit more countries and if you come to Sweden you have to visit Koenigsegg 🙂🤘🏻
it would be a cool idea for a series of videos if you went arround to lesser known car modding hot spots, instead of the ones we all already know and the main stream cultures, just finding out the wierd sub cultures spread around the world in lesser known places and see how they mod their cars there, like a lerry columbus finding out the hidden gems of the car world and giving them their place in history and showing them to the world, basically what you're doing in this video
thanks for the videos and for showing us the wonders of all the facets of the world of motorsports and car culture in general, sadly i can't participate in it myself so getting to be around it like this makes it easier to bear
That Toyots is Kijang means Deer but also an acronym for Kerja sama Indonesia-Jepang, which translate to english is Cooperation of Indonesia-Japan
It's a myth, Kijang is named after an animal and it never was an abbreviation.
indonesia is becoming more and more a big place for car culture , as much as other contry near indonesia like singapour etc
0:55 this are toyota kijang this is a 4th gen kijang, it called kijang kapsul in philipines it called tamaraw, larry you should visit kijang comunity in indonesia they are crazy.. the put k24 engine, even 2jz gte, even crazier they stance it, perfect sleeper..
0:57 yeah, Toyota kijang, my favourite classic car family
5:08 an white Evo 10!?!
6:55 an white civic estilo has been found right on that corner
11:51 yeah, mini cooper and Golf R32 maybe
@larrychen that is a Holden Premier. Also sold as a Mazda Roadpacer with a Rotary engine. Common cars here in NZ
The white Starlet is the king of the lot!! 💪🏽
The 16:20 although badged as a Chevy, was a Holden and most sold in Indo had a Holden badge, but some were sold as Chevy. In the early 1970s (which is when this car dates from) Holden was second to only Toyota for sales in the Indonesian market but had left local assembly by about 1987.
nice, the fact that i'm Indonesian, i'm proud thaat you like most of the car's parked there.
Oh supercars... but those minis whatssup! That's awesome man truly made me smile when I heard that.
A modern Mercedes on retro-looking SSRs shouldn't work as well as that E-Class near the start does. Ace stuff!
As an Indonesian, I just want say welcome to Indonesia
1:42 That white Mitsubishi was sold as a Colt here in Australia, also in hatchback.
That Benz wagon was on point
Larry be like. Maserati, Lambo, GTR........nah. Give my the Mini group.
I feel you man.
The Corolla LiftBack you mentioned, I'd seen it in the US during my college in Eugene, OR that car was under Eagle brand. But I could only recalled the model Talon that share platform with the Mitsubishi Eclipse.
Great video Larry. Every show, you need to do a solo walk of the parking lot sir!
Thanks larry for visiting Indonesia car culture
It was honour to meet you in the event✌
Larry, do you plan to go to South America someday(come to Brazil)? The car culture from down here is given close to zero visibility from the rest of the world and would be nice to have someone like you to explore and register the cool builds we have. You can hit the guys from Fueltech for help or Jamie Orr (even thoug he has more focus on the VW side of things). Greetings
Mini crew made my morning 😂
That Aventador just rolled in
Larry : OH MY GOD LOOK AT THIS MINIIIIII
😂
@17:30 -- That Porsche 968 CS was very likely towed there. The maintenance to keep one of those running ... UGH! 🙄
It was actually driven there; the owner used the car regularly in the weekend.
Always like seeing other car coultures keep it up
cars that are imported to indonesia are taxed progressively depending on their engine size, so most cars have the tiniest basic engine. They do 0-60 in a few business days. Even then these "indos" sure know how to soup up cars
US had the Corolla liftback. It was under the Geo brand. Can’t remember if there was a Toyota version though.
I love the idea to travel and film car culture around the world. But please, buy a gimbal :P hahhahah
Indonesia loves their slammed euro cars
@16.20 the “Chevy” is an Australian Holden Kingswood
16:18 that's a Holden HQ Premier from Australia. Was our 70s muscle car.
the fact that we can't import old cars but we have these classic cars is something to be think about.
Heck ya! Dig this style vid.
Thank you, sir!
So many good cars but the Celica was my favorite
will you come again to Indonesia because there will be a Eid cruise the elite rare cars will be out on the road
this is a very good quality content
You need to go to museum angkut in malang
Wow larry in elite showcase... 🎉
You have to see more deep about our Indonesian car scene, especially the off road scene
1:02 such a clean kijang😮
That white turbo starlet is so sick bro....
cool channel, definitely subscribe
Larry here...mantap
Larry Chen 👍👍👍👌👌👌
I'm waiting for the elite vlog
love these types of videos reminds me of Nori Yoro videos
Another rare car that available in Indonesia is Aston Martin Cabriole look's similiar to Ford Mustang Cabriole year 1970's in Indonesia and so the BMW M1 only 1 available
Indonesia car culture larry. .
That white model land cruiser ,we call it BJ60 in asia....something in 80s land cruiser
I don’t really understand why Brio couldn’t pass US regulations when Mitsubishi Mirage could. They’re practically the same car, maybe Brio is even better
agree!
Probably cost of federalizing it, as they were designed for Southeast Asian market in the first place.
Love the video Larry. You seem like a top guy
The Toyota culture is incredible
that s class generation onwards all runs on air as stocks,(airmatic) higher spec, commonly on v12's and amg's (55,63,65) runs on hydraulics (abc) current gen (mbc)
3:17
whoa! you suddenly went all Seinfeld there.. 🤭
Great content once again, Larry
Great video as always larry, Loves it
jangan bosen bosen koh main ke indonesia hehehe
4.26 that’s mine 😍🙏🏼
w124 always great looking
Larry, you need to go to a stance event (Ultrace or XS Carnight)!
That Lancer looks very similar to a Volkswagen Fox... three wheels for life!
Thanks again for the eye candy Larry! :)
That Celica is dream car material for me.
FYI, the car price in indonesia 3 times more higher than in america, if lamborghini price in america $2 million , in indonesia the price is $6 miliion
