- I finally found the perfect place to build the ultimate car guy compound. Tons of car parts, tools, and a motorcycle were left behind. So today we're going to sort through everything, throw a ton of stuff away, and start cleaning things up. A new house, a new shop, and a place to build cars better than ever before... but the house has some strange secrets of it's own.

We always put a 2+6 crippler, flat on center of the door opening so there’s solid wood for the garage door opener to fasten to.
You know that makes perfect sense but I don’t even remember center openers exist, I hate them so much 😂 both of these are getting jackshafts!

@@MichaelBEarlJackshaft openors can be mounted on either side. Technically, you would never design garage door openinings like this, but its a renovation, have to work with existing conditions.

Was it solid? Kinda looked like that cheap luan stuff. Whatever it was it don't imagine it would meet fire code.
Great framing job hopefully you keep the brick for any additional work ,around the house.that you might have later on.
Very happy to start seeing house videos. I know this isn’t a ‘house update/repair’ type channel, but after seeing how nicely the shop turned out, it’s refreshing to see directions turned to the house. Even car nuts following your vehicle vids live in houses. So we all have ‘dream homes’ we dream about. Having a nice home, with a shop just outside. You are making it happen. I’m looking forward to ‘housevideos’ far more than car vids right now. Who doesn’t want to watch the progression of you making your home the dream home to match the shop! Great work. Keep it coming. You're going to love the new doors. I replaced my old uninsulated door with a Clopay R-18.4 insulated one. Stays cool in summer and warm in winter.

I would love a dream garage, I got a carport and a 12x16 mini barn with a loft. I also wanted a shop but I got what we could afford so I'm not living in a van down by the river.
Glad you're getting your decent garage and shop. After the warehouse it's a bit different but a lot cheaper to run and as you get rich and famous you can step up, especially now that you know what you really need and want.

I believe I've been watching you for years now on yt and comment on your uploads maybe once a year. I will never get my head around US construction code! I'm in the UK and have a good grasp of our general build methods and some of its short falls (Euro countries like Belgium and Germany have some amazing construction methods which solve our fails, but as with all things will take a while to catch on here).
If Eric has the time (assume he's like every other working dad in that those 20mins on the loo each day with his phone are basically his free time). He should check out some UK/ Euro construction YT stuff brick/lintel/stone work for example.
In the UK single skin brickwork and stuff like spray foam are massively frowned upon by our mortgage lenders. Whilst our historic timber frame properties (pre America stuff) can also be different to get a mortgage on if the walls are less than 20cm in thickness for example.
Anyway guys, keep going! Still enjoy your new content as much as I did your very early stuff.

Cheers as always for the great content. What about having high pull down cabinets on the side of the small garage that way you still have storage but they are out of the way from the vehicles and hopefully will give you some space to open the car doors?
When I built my house instead of using iron for the brick ledge we just put in a redwood beam that doubled as a header and a brick ledge. Plus redwood looks great and doesn't rot and definitely doesn't rust.

Decades ago, in my vaguely remembered youth, I built a tree house in the fork of a tree on our property. I built it well, but idiots kept falling out of it or off the ladder, so my father determined that he had to remove it. There were so many more huge nails in that sucker than needed that it took him untold hours. Indirectly, through him, I feel your pain. I still miss the tree house.

2 car garage door layout was correct. If you built it 2 feet as you say the corner of the house would be extremely weak considering the roof load. Plus the 2 feet also allows a car door to be opened.

How is that third stall going to look proportionally from the outside of the house? I'd hate for it to look like it was an afterthought where you have a super tight garage door on one side but not on the other side. I know it would be a ton more work but could you silde you main garage door over to make everything proportional where not having to back a vehicle in?

Was wondering if you considered reframing the "entire" front of the garage. That way you could position the doors exactly the way you want to get the right amount of space between the walls and cars. Not criticism...just wondering. You guys made the framing look pretty easy.

You have to shorten that LVL header to stop the bowing in the vertical studs or you door will have problems
Make sure you have a metal cutting blade on the sawsall not a bi-cutting one
Back the vehicle in on that single door side so the drivers door isn't against the wall. I always back my vehicles into my buildings.

Those old drywall nails are hardened. It would be faster to pull them or find a way to leave em. Not to mention, the massive savings on saw blades.
Milwaukee makes a carbide toothed sawzall blade now. It would have taken care of those nails.

My buddy had the same garage layout. He closed in the existing garage door an put in two door on each end of the garage, he could drive in two cars per door an the second set of doors let him drive the front car out or park them nose to nose. With the whole wall along the house an the old garage door wall used for cabinets. To little to late but for future endeavors an adventures
It appears that the wall is not a load bearing wall?!? Would be nice to seal the floor and re-paint the garage inside. Im sure you have lighting improvement plans.

I just watched a UK Show, called Bangers and Cash Under the Bonnet S01E01. They bought a rusted 1965 Austin Mini Cooper S for 5000 (Pounds) and sold it for 18000 (Pounds). The buyer spent 3 years restoring it, and it looked awesome! You Have Mail! =)

You need a tr6 to go in that space. Then you have lots of room.
Most of the time the top is 2x10s sandwich between plywood.

I just did the exact opposite. I removed the essentially useless 3rd bay to allow for more storage and workspace, and added a man door.
What's the difference of slapping together 2, 2 x12's compared to the expensive one?
For a span that short, (2) 2x12's with 1/2 plywood sandwiched in between, glued and screwed together would have exceded code in my area. Jr is a fan of over kill. Lol
You could put some windows in where the car doors will be. Then open the windows and you can open your car door. Easy. 😆👍
My car hauler came with a door over the wheel wells for this purpose, but not all cars have doors high enough to clear - the Subaru barely does!
you could always just back in the car that will go in that spot and then the door opens into the same space as the next car over
what if you tried a SAWZALL instead of a "saw zaw"? might work better

I was wondering why garage door companies don't make 3 car garage doors myself. It seems like there would definitely be a market for them. I was also thinking why he didn't reframe the opening to accept two of those over sized doors that are typically referred to as one and a half size. Those were common in the 80s but I don't see them much these days -- at least not in my area.

The dimensions for a three bay must be tight.
Be sure to use a 9 ft door rather than an 8 ft door! I made that mistake, then had to go back & re-cut the opening and put in the 9 footer. Most full size vehicles will BARELY get through an 8 ft door, just missing the mirror edges. Price is almost the same too. Trust me on this one!

Not really, I fully insulated my garage when I built it but the insulated door was the big game changer. Not only does it keep out the heat and cold it makes the garage door open almost silently.

Leaving the door as is a d using the individual wheel dollies thst let yoh position the car exactly how you want it and putting the least moved/driven car in that spot and be able to move it how you want to work on it isn't even a consideration? (works for me! Someone removed a third bay door and put in a ealk through door in my garage, that's exactly what I did so i could have a project car there... Rather than rip the door back out and frame in another bay door. A few hundred bucks for wheel doilies and i was jn business! 😊)
Those are old school 8 grade 10 rib shank nails not like the China made grade a contractor nails today
This is really a crazy amount of work and expense just to gain an additional garage bay. I'm not sure it's worth it, honestly.

1:29 if they do it right they will actually stagger the block / bricks to tie into what is there so you can not tell they were even there (matching the brick with the exact same color of brick) like nothing ever happened as lmc would say...or they can do a border with different style brick to highlight the new door...just saying blahblahblah means ill shut up now
