same here. I have the RP and 7D and didn't do much videos at all other than use RP as web cam. It's just much lighter to do video on cell phones. I think R5 or R6 will be my next buy...and the RF 70-200. I just love to have IBIS and it will make all my non stabilized canon fix lens much more useful. The 4K work flow is already time consuming. 8K will be a killer for my computer.
Thanks for waiting a month to gather your thoughts for your review. I prefer this over straight-out-of-the-box type reviews, where the reviewers always seem overly excited and sometimes insincere. I think I'll be trading in my EOS R and buying an R5 to replace it, I'm so glad they got rid of the stupid multifunction bar and replaced it with a joystick! That was easily my biggest annoyance with the EOS R (I had a 5D MK2 prior to it). I'm mostly a stills shooter so the R5's shortcomings in video mode don't really affect me.
Hey Chris - your review is actually the first "full" review ive seen so far - the others i watch (Jared Polin and Tony Northrup) all only focussed on the video features so far and are holding back their full review - yet im only interested in the "stills" part of the camera - while owning my 6Dmkii now for 2.5 years i never took a single video with it :D ... The only downside i see with the r5 is that its so prohibitivly expensive, clocking in a 4580$ here in switzerland (thats with the mandatory EF adapter), technically i could afford it but it feels very "wasty" - yet the R6 with its 20mp feels somehow... held back by the 20mp for a landscape photographer like me. I crop often, as in always, at least 20% and thats just format change... I hope that they will lower the price in a year or so to something reasonable. that said, this comment comes from a hobbyist and not someone that earns money with his photography, so my way of rating things is very different and price has a value of its own. Still greate review as always! I just hope one day youll show us how you do your focus char test on those 600mm lenses, or is your garden just so long? :-D
Yeah , not bad for a now 5 plus year old camera , the thing that comes to mind looking at all these camera reviews to me is that , all cameras have their strong and weak points , while it is easy to get carried away with the latest and greatest wizz bang models(and the grass is always greener .... ) , , if you have an old model that is still competent and with a good lens , you can still get great images and media . I look at some of the good photo`s i have taken with my A73 , and i see no reason too spend 4 or 5 grand , or 6.5 grand in this case on another new camera body , and then a lens or two and in my region that in all honesty is only going to give very fractional improvement in image quality for the most part unless you are a pro or blowing up to poster size to sell or pixel peeping .
Great review as usual Christopher. We really need a Sony a9 (II) vs R5/6 AF sports comparison. I would lend you my a9 II however I live in Australia so a little bit far for a loaner.
Thanks for your detailed review! I have been waiting for your review to judge if I want to consider this as my new camera. You can clearly notice the ammount of work that has been put into the video! The thing I'm missing (even it's topic is maybe better off in a second video) is how the R5 works with older EF (and maybe even EF-S) lenses. As far as I know, both should work for this camera.
Such a great review. I'm still waiting for my camera. How well do the Sigma lenses do with the camera and adapter for photography? I might have missed it in the video.
@@christopherfrost hmm as I'm following you since a long time, I noticed many Sony stuff and very few Canon these last times until the very last test of the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS 'II' USM. Christopher, as always your knowledge of the Canon camera menu systems is second to none.. A brilliant video, indeed...!!! No click bait here. LOL! Hopefully, you will be able to compare the R5 to the R6 in the near future. Thanks again..
Hi Chris, a great review of the R5. I had Canon gear, 7D II, 5DIV, 500 f4 II etc and had no problem moving to Panasonic G9 some two years ago. However the G9 is not a good wildlife camera that's why I am looking at the R5. One problem you mentioned, image blackout and a knocking sound, well I had this with the G9. It was the sensor/ibis which on the G9 is a combined unit and it was replaced under warranty. Some of the other problems you incurred will hopefully be improved with updated firmware.
I so look forward to seeing reviews of the R5 as a stills camera. As always Chris your reviews are thorough and easy to understand. May I also say you remind me of Joaquin Phoenix.... with an English accent
Yes, in US the price difference is "only" $1400 but at least in my country it's 2000€. And I guess that when A7 IV comes out it will affect more on the R6 price. So I'm very interested in R5 - R6 comparisons.
Well Christopher I must say, this is some fabulous review work. Really excelled yourself here. Made the R5 look like a better buy than most other big name RUclips camera reviewers and correctly identified Canon mismarketed this as the 8K video beast when the real draw was actually the quite breathtaking stills performance. Really, you've pointed out some features like the partial F stopping that other reviewers just missed. Seems rather non-biased as well. Bravo. The only problem is I want one now, where I hadn't previously. 🤔🙄😂
@@christopherfrost Gerald Undone is a Sony Schill who makes useless tests in his parents' basement where he lives. If the mis-marketing thing he said was true, the R5 wouldn't be the best selling camera of 2020 as it is.
With a good LP-E6N battery, you also can achieve the 12 fps! They may not last as long as an NH battery, but in a pinch, they are useful! I hope you find a way to retest those RF lenses you looked at on the R, as there are a few features that are missing in some of them. For example, on the r5, there is that icon for IS that is enhanced on the r5 due to IBIS (I think) and you get the "hand+" icon in the VF rather than just the "hand". I think, IIRC, that this (hand+) means the two are working together. I had assumed this were true for all RF lenses, but apparently not. That feature does not work with the RF 24-105 F/4L or the RF 70-200 F/2.8L but it does work with the new RF 100-500 F/4.5-7.1L lens. So, I guess the combined IS (hand+) only works with RF lenses released recently and after/with the R5/R6.
Great review and you covered all the bases as usual. It is funny that whilst some videographers are whining about the overheating (which for most people is really a non-issue), I agree with you that the standard 4K is disappointing in its quality. If Canon can improve that in firmware they really have the complete camera.
I’m also seeing the blurring with mechanical shutter, mostly at 1/60, 1/100. Same for ECFS images beyond the first image in a burst series. I did some controlled tests and contacted Canon support about what I presume is shutter shock but didn’t get a satisfactory acknowledgment from them. You mention that they are planning to address this in a future firmware upgrade. Might this be coming in the next upgrade due in February 2021? I wouldn’t mind doing electronic shutter for many situations except that I am drowning in too many images captured due to inability to specify burst speed in electronic shutter. Thanks for your great content and presentation.
Watching this review i guess CF is a photographer that does video as well which is like 90% of us and that's why we relate to his vids ..its seams 90% of youtubers are Videographers
Its the best camera I have ever used. If you shoot in ambient temps of 65 degrees F or less - you likely will never overheat the camera. Even in 8K. For long form recording I point a small and silent usb powered fan at the ports, and it will record in all modes forever that way. Even in ambient temps up to about 80 degrees F.
Are you absolutely sure about that? If so you should make a video to demonstrate it for everyone. Serious professional technicians have been looking into the issue and not been able to fix it...
Christopher Frost Photography Yes. I have personally tested it myself. Many others as well. Multiple posts with pictures of times on the Canon Rumors Discord. I have filled my 512GB Cf Express Card after shooting over one hour of 8k IPB Video in a 79 degree room, with a silent USB fan pointed at the ports. I have repeated this test many times. It also works with 4kHQ, and 4K 60. I shot 4 sequences of 4K 120 this way and stopped because who needs 30 total minutes or more of continuous 4K 120. Many others have not even needed the fan if they shoot in 70 degree F or cooler. See the Ordinary Filmmaker. This is all with firmware 1.1. Also the RUclips channel No Life has posted his videos with a small fan essentially recording 8k forever.
i hope to see a good long term review of this camera. in summer. either in the city or the dessert/parks or the usual outdoor wedding locations; and not indoors in air conditioned rooms.
Appreciate you compiling this. While i’d welcome trying some of these, i value weight and portability maybe more than others. So, when i owned Canon FF dslrs i really loved their ef 40mm f2.8. And having recently switching to Nikon when switching to mirrorless, i’m really looking forward to seeing some reviews of Nikon’s newly released 40mm f2.
Did the Mechanical Shutter vertical blurring bug ever get addressed in subsequent firmware? If you shoot burst mode does it only affect the first exposure in the burst sequence or do all exposures in the burst suffer from vertical blur? Was it only with the 1/100th of a second shutter speed that you saw this bug?
Have you used the R6 at all, and will you be reviewing that one as well? This was a superb review, and financially I'm really only open to get an R6 as a hobbyist. Thanks, and nice ASU shirt!
Here's a thought about stabilization tests. Rather than just testing the maximum shutter speed of the camera, stabilized, and compare that to the reciprocal rule, also test the camera unstabilized. The reason for this is that you are assuming you will get a sharp image with the reciprocal rule shutter speed, which is often untrue on high megapixel cameras. For instance, say you are shooting on a 50mm lens. You find that, with stabilization, you get sharp images at around 1/25, so you conclude the camera has 1 stop of stabilization. However, if you were to test the camera unstabilized, you may find out that you only get sharp images at around 1/200, so you are actually getting 3 stops of stabilization, not just 1. The reciprocal rule is a thing from the film days, and although helpful on 24-megapixel cameras, they are a bit slow for higher megapixel cameras. Using this method also bypasses the idea of having stable hands or not, as your 'base metric' (unstabilized tests) is based on your own hands as well, not some rule. Edit: also, the way you said "Bokeh" at 14:06 is amazing :P
Good camera in the winter months, keep your hands warm!! Canon did not market the R5 wrong they created a camera not fit for purpose. If a device has functionality it should work as described, if it doesn't work as described it clearly has design faults.
Great video, very informative... maybe loosen up your voice a bit to sound less robotic, but hey getting all the precise infos is as precious hearing them from Data 😀
Fantastic review like always. I love this camera and have had no issues with it but I am photographer and not a videographer. My only complaint is that the Exposure Simulation turns off when you have a flash or a flash trigger. You can hit two buttons to get it back or turn of the trigger but that is annoying. However, I am sure they could fix this easily with a firmware update
I love your lenses and photo gear reviews Christopher, thanks. If I ever buy something new in the future, I'll fully trust your reviews, for sure. A small question: what does it bring to use native RF lenses with an R5 instead of for example a Sigma lens with the EF adapter? Do you lose something with the EF adapter, such as aperture, light...?
I appreciate reviewers who actually USE cameras (for more than a few hours) before reviewing them

So from all I heard in your video I‘m even more excited to get it into my hands and I‘m sure it will be a major upgrade over my 90D I‘ve used for a couple years now. Can‘t wait! Edit: I read the overheating issue in 8K video shooting has been adressed in firmware. Is it a different story now?
Lucky to have had it for five weeks already! I placed an order over six weeks ago and it looks like it will be Oct or Nov at the earliest before I receive mine. Great review, as always.
Dear Chris, Your reviews are always matter-of-fact and focused. When I want to know more about a particular product I always check your review. Well done!
As I am waiting on my R5 to arrive I have watched a ton of videos on it. In that time I have gone from excited to disappointed to excited. Your review of this camera was what I was hoping for, well done!
Brilliant review Chris. So much detail in here. Could never justify buying one but it's certainly am amazing camera that I'm interested in learning more about. And great to see Aberporth getting a look in as well as Llangrennog!
Chris, really nice review. Thank you for your work!
Gordon Laing from camera labs did a photograpby review.
4580$ is... just... so much money
The old a7rii hold its own in the video department quite well....very surprising. It would be even better in Super35.
I've seen a few comparisons and the R5 holds its own with the a9 cameras for sports shooting.
I agree. That would be a great comparison. Those are the cameras I'm interested in.
Best reviewer ever in GB
Excellent review, especially the way you handled the comparison of video modes.
This is the best review I saw of this camera.
Such a great review. I'm still waiting for my camera. How well do the Sigma lenses do with the camera and adapter for photography? I might have missed it in the video.
I've been using a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens adapted on and for stills and videos it's absolutely fantastic
Welcome back to Canon! I was missing your channel :)
I never stopped testing Canon gear :-)
@@christopherfrost hmm as I'm following you since a long time, I noticed many Sony stuff and very few Canon these last times until the very last test of the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS 'II' USM. That's why I'm glad of this R5 review (even if I stay with a 5D mark IV... maybe one day R series ?... I love DSLRs). Keep up the good job ;)
Hi! Thanks for the comprehensive review. I'd like to ask, what lenses you recommend to R5 for:
- astrophotography
- birds photography
- landscapes (sunsets, mountains, etc)
Thanks in advance and I just subscribed
Some of the other problems you incurred will hopefully be improved with updated firmware.
canon got to keep you you tubers happy !!!!
Wow! The stabilisation for still photos looks amazing! Which is the biggest reason why I have one on order, so this was a very reassuring video :-)
Always a methodical and comprehensive review from Mr. Frost.
How does he get the menu recorded directly from the camera?
Using an external recorder
Excellent review Christopher , many thanks
Best reviewer ever I like native speaker reviews
I so look forward to seeing reviews of the R5 as a stills camera. As always Chris your reviews are thorough and easy to understand. May I also say you remind me of Joaquin Phoenix.... with an English accent
Are you gonna review the R6? I bet most people here will go for the "budget" version.
Love your reviews, keep it up!
Yes, in US the price difference is "only" $1400 but at least in my country it's 2000€. And I guess that when A7 IV comes out it will affect more on the R6 price. So I'm very interested in R5 - R6 comparisons.
The R6 is for plebs. Just enjoy the review and become a patron.
CBTheMechanic On the planet I’m from a mirroless cam which basically has the 1dxiii internals for less than half the price is pretty awesome.
I dont see the R6 as a "budget R5". I see it as an option for a different market.
I hope Canon lend him the R6 for a while and he make a review for it.
Thanks! Full-disclosure - the thing about it being mis-marketed was originally Gerald Undone's thought - his reviews are really excellent
@@christopherfrost I agree. You, him, Potato Jet and Epic Light Media are my go tos for good photography and videography tips and reviews. 👌
@@christopherfrost Gerald Undone is a Sony Schill who makes useless tests in his parents' basement where he lives. If the mis-marketing thing he said was true, the R5 wouldn't be the best selling camera of 2020 as it is.
Wow thanks for this! I learned more than a lot of more popular reviews especially about the battery! Thanks Christopher!
Fantastic review as always!
THE BEST REVIEW FOR THIS CAMERA. PERIOD.
A review of the R5 for stills? FINALLY!
Great review Christopher, thanks.
Great review. Thanks Christopher
Excellent review, bring on more camera reviews.
Great review and you covered all the bases as usual. It is funny that whilst some videographers are whining about the overheating (which for most people is really a non-issue), I agree with you that the standard 4K is disappointing in its quality. If Canon can improve that in firmware they really have the complete camera.
Canon showed this in stock on thier website today so I ordered it. We'll see when it shows up.
Finally a proper review of the R5!
Great review! Would love your review on he R6 as that is more the price point and mp size I was looking for.
Well they do make videos... but alas a lot of them just ride the overheating wagon for views.
There's no other camera in the world that i want more.
Great job, Chris!!!
i hope to see a good long term review of this camera. in summer. either in the city or the dessert/parks or the usual outdoor wedding locations; and not indoors in air conditioned rooms.
Thank you very much for another excellent review.
Such an INCREDILE review
Hey Chris! awsome review! did canon fix the problem you mentioned with the vertical bleur at 100th ss?
Great review Chris! I think this will be my next camera when I finally get rid of the A7R2
excellent in depth review, cheers!
Really like the moment when the CFexpress card pop out and you see Sony ! reminding me the a7SIII :)
He he. I love those Tough memory cards, and they're so fast.
Have you used the R6 at all, and will you be reviewing that one as well? This was a superb review, and financially I'm really only open to get an R6 as a hobbyist. Thanks, and nice ASU shirt!
I’m saving for this camera can’t wait to mount it on the RF 28-70 !
Always thorough and to the point.
I’m a metro Phoenix area native.. loving the ASU shirt... 👍👍👍
The video review is also good.
Do you lose something with the EF adapter, such as aperture, light...?
great book collection
Good overview thanks, would love to see some actual comparisons with your Z7 and Sony A7R
As always a balanced and fair review Chris - thank you 😎😎😎
Very useful review with helpful information, thanks a lot 🙏👍
Excellent. This was so helpful!
