Great video Lee, thank you. I have been a Sony shooter for about 6-7 years, and have waiting and waited for them to produce something even remotely as user friendly as this camera. The option for a fully articulating touchscreen with menus that makes sense and are easy to navigate without even having to read a manual, and endless program ability in a beautiful mirrorless camera with some of the craziest lenses coming out ever. I am about ready to sellMy brand spanking new A7R4, and A9II, Because I was so sick I was getting lost in those menus and the camera not doing what it should be. I also had purchased almost every G master lens,That I will sell with The camera bodies. Your video was really excellent thank you so much. It was essentially a tutorial and how amazing this camera is. I had it for one day and was shooting Christmas lights on timers in HDR mode that would have taken so much more effort to have sound in the Sony systems. I remember one night in Paris with an experienced photographer trying to find in the menus where the bulb mode was ha ha it took us about 20 minutes at midnight.Anyway, thank you again and I would really encourage you to spend more time with this camera because for Photography alone in my opinion it blows away all my Sony cameras and I have not even gone into the video modes yet. I’m sure 120 FPS of 4K video would suffice in almost any situation now and should not produce too much overheating. I thought this was a good, even handed review. I've had the camera for about a month and a half but only had one major shoot with it. One thing's for sure, with the heavy RF glass (I was using the RF 85mm f/1.2, which is a beast) the reciprocal rule does not apply! Even with IBIS on, and shooting at 1/200th of a second, I noticed motion blur on a number of images. I guess it's because of the higher resolution of the sensor. I will be trying to keep my shutter speed upward of 1/300th of a second for most work if possible.
Sometimes there is no rule you just gotta shoot what the lighting conditions and movement are. If the model isn’t moving (like the example I showed) there’s no reason a shot at 35mm should randomly have eyes out of focus at 1/160 with ibis and lens Is. That was only one example. I had lots of situations where I was up at 1/4000 with the same problem. I don’t consider it motion blur. It just looks like the focus shifted slightly out.
Solid video and always good to see Canadian talent like Chinna. As someone who now owns the R5 (my pre-order finally came in a month ago), I gotta say... it truly is an incredible camera. It's a step in the right direction for Canon, having used them for nearly 20yrs now professionally. I'd put the R5 up there with the original 5D and 1Dx in terms of a milestone in photography gear.
100% it’s too bad they felt they had to tack on things like 8k video to pull in buyers. Everything I dislike about the camera is related to a lot of the video functionality and usability. But since I didn’t want to talk too much about video I left it out
I have looked through about 10 reviews of canon's R5 and react to the fact that those who did the reviews and are critical of the video function do not seem to have made any of their own films or projects. The criticism has been that the camera overheats and shuts off after about 20-30 minutes when filming in 8K. Regardless of whether you make a "feature film", a short film or a documentary, you do not film 20-30 minutes in a row. You do not make scenes that are so long, do you? of course you make breaks more or less long. I think R5 is probably great for video 8K and no one should refrain from buying because there is a risk of overheating. Plan how to film so this is not a problem.
The price is indeed steep, but that's pretty in line with how much the 5D series normally cost. Also i find it humorous when people don't recommend the camera for video, but currently in the mirrorless camera world nothing else offers better specs even when you discount the features that overheat. The A7S isn't even a comparison because that camera has a identity crisis.
Not having many eyes slightly out of focus, maybe 5 % or so, if that. And this seems in line with other reviews. I jumped a bit when you said the AF was "nearly" as good as Sony. Its better than on my Sonys as far as I can tell. I notice with the examples you showed the shutter speed was only 1/160 which isn't enough on such a high resolution camera to eliminate the possibility of motion blur in my opinion. Either from the camera or the subject. Don't be afraid to use the ISO abilities of these modern cameras. There's too many photographers producing noise free images that are just ever so slightly soft due to insufficient shutter speed. Just my 2 cents worth. Overall review was good.
This is great point about the noise free images being slightly out of focus. ISO 3200 and 6400 look great out of this camera. For internet purpose (Instagram, etc.) no one will notice any difference between these speeds and lower ISOs.

That was only one random example. There’s lots of shots I was up around 1/4000 and saw the same issues. The model wasn’t moving and 1/160 with ibis and lens IS shouldn’t cause the eyes to be slightly out of focus. And then the next shot after it be in focus. Hi! I’m a canon user and I’m seeking a new camera for my photography work. I was eyeing this camera but I’m received some negative feedback about the color profile. I come from a 5d mark III and I’ve been told that this camera doesn’t have the same richness in color. Would you be so kind as to comment based on your experience? Thank you so much🙏🏻
Canon R5 defaults to 1/1 full power flashes consistently when TTL and HSS used at any shutter speed faster than 1/250 sec. In addition, Bracketing of any kind is not successful-be it flash bracketing or AEB, as the Z cameras are able to do with flash. Gear tested: Canon R5 Flashpoint PRO2 MK2 Trigger Flashpoint AD1200 PRO Flashpoint AD600 PRO TTL Flashpoint AD200. All gear on latest firmware. Submitted for user testing, consensus, and hopeful reporting to the manufacturers.
I think there has been a bunch of firmware updates and it’s Better now but I have no experience with that so I can’t help you. Just google the new firmware and you should be able to find some videos on it
I noticed on my R5 that stuck pixels (or are they hot pixels?) appear whenever the shutter speed is set to below 1/10 sec with a black image (lens cap on), and get more evident the slower the shutter speed - most noticeable at 30 sec shutter. Any shutter speed above 1/10 sec and faster, they completely disappear. This leads me to believe perhaps they're hot pixels, not stuck pixels? Interestingly, they appear on the EVF and LCD even before taking a picture. Does anyone have this as well?
Many seem to have this „problem“. You can trigger a clean to map those out but some may always be visible. There will always be some defect pixels especially with such a high pixel count. I hav read of people exchanging their camera three times only to find the new ones has even worse/more defect pixels
Basically no camera like that is made for dedicated long time video use. If you mainly do videos, there a cameras that are made for that use case. Like Canons C70 which has an RF mount but is made for videos

My 24mp Sony Uncompressed RAWs are around 50mb! :D
So you'd gain more resolution while having less file size :DDD lol
Yeah something doesnt add up. My 42 mpx A7R III files are 80 to 90 mb. A7R iv is 120 mb!
@@markrigg6623 exactly!! If you go w/ compressed Raw on Sony it‘s similar. But I guess this is where the crazy Dynamic Range of the files comes from.
If canon CR3 holds up the the Sony files, that’d be impressive with the much smaller file size!
@@dasignarts Amazingly the dynamic range is now more or less on par with Sony sensors. So the new CR 3 raw files may well have some super efficient encoding to them. I'm surprised there hasn't been more people discussing this .
@@markrigg6623 wow!! Thats a real relief actually! I wanted to go back to Canon, but wasn't sure simply because of the insane file quality of my A7III.
But having the same DR with just 20mb RAWs of the R6 is a dream!!
Thad'd be 100 - 150 GB less Data for weddings with around 5000-7000 pictures made in 1 Day. :DDDD
Super important topic actually!! You can save a little by NOT having to buy Hard Drives. :))
@@dasignarts Yep if you're shooting weddings the Canon raw files will make a big difference to you. I'd get hold of some of the Canon raw files before making the switch if I was you just to make sure you're happy with their dynamic range but I think you will be.
Fantastic shots
with the backlight situation did you try spot meter?
you can use spot metering when subjects are back lit
Gear tested:
Canon R5
Flashpoint PRO2 MK2 Trigger
Flashpoint AD1200 PRO
Flashpoint AD600 PRO TTL
Flashpoint AD200.
All gear on latest firmware.
Submitted for user testing, consensus, and hopeful reporting to the manufacturers.
Same on A73, always shoot on full power when in TTL
What’s about comparing to gfx50sii?
hi lee! do you know if these af issues got fixed by now at all?
I think there has been a bunch of firmware updates and it’s Better now but I have no experience with that so I can’t help you. Just google the new firmware and you should be able to find some videos on it
6:37 Me at every school running competition.
Great review!
If it is I think you can do pixel remapping in the menu.
Many seem to have this „problem“. You can trigger a clean to map those out but some may always be visible. There will always be some defect pixels especially with such a high pixel count. I hav read of people exchanging their camera three times only to find the new ones has even worse/more defect pixels
Any chance for an R6 review?
solid review. Thanks. i love mine ;-)
Someone told me the video features on this body essentially is for quick snippets and not dedicated use.
If you shoot in the lower IPB modes like I did often, then you can shoot for longer periods of time, it’s just really hard to edit those files
Basically no camera like that is made for dedicated long time video use. If you mainly do videos, there a cameras that are made for that use case. Like Canons C70 which has an RF mount but is made for videos
First!
bruh. fo real
Everyone is going there way and becoming better at,I don't what iam doing with my life I hate myself.lol
uh -uh Canon doesnt even need RAW files to look good, their JPG is awesome.... so yeaahh
30 mins recording sound good to me
Was that an HDMI in the battery slot or am I dumb?
It’s a port to connect the battery grip
@@leezavitz8104 Interesting. Thanks for the info.
After firmware updates its AF is not nearly as good but just as good as sony's AF system
i love your work and channel a lot but i do see color shift and green in skin and jacket...sorry
..... too mutch Limitations 👎
Nice review, but with Canon's deceptiveness and the cost of their new lenses I won't buy Canon ever again!

Oh no what have I started?!
8:45 "There's no weird color stuff..." Really? because I do see some weird color stuff there. Don't just brush that aside. Otherwise great review! 👌
you’re just seeing screen capture mixed with RUclips compression. There’s no weird colour stuff. I would only mention it if I saw it
@@LeeZavitz Thanks for clarifying. I'm gonna download the sample Images and see for myself. Great review btw. I really appreciate your work. ✌️
Thanks for the review and for helping me to make easier my decision on not buying canon :)
