Some great tips and advice on settings, cameras are so complex these days, tutorials like this are a blessing. I think I will be a bit starstruck when I see you all in person on safari, as I watch so many of your tutorials!
Thank you Janine - you patiently explained these settings so well I am able to transmit them to the Canon R. Excellent..
I've just ordered the R5.
This guide is just what I was looking for.
Thanks Janine.
Been struggling with switching between Eye Tracking and Point in a fast manner. Your method is genius. Thanks!
This was so, so helpful! Really made my first day with my R5 so much less intimidating (and much more exciting). Thank you for sharing with us!
I just purchased an R5. I'm so thankful I found your video. It helped me navigate through a very overwhelming menu. Thank you so much for all the time and dedication you put in to providing this information. It was a real blessing!
Best video for setting up the R5. Clear and so easy to follow. Thanks you Janine.
Whew...thanks so much! A thorough and detailed, well-explained video. A relief to see this!
Great video, thank you! The multifunction button customization to switch from stills to video was genius!
Thank you Janine and Sabine. You hepled me to set up my R5 and R3. They work perfecly now. In fact so good that my buddys are also seting up thei cameras based on your advises. Hope to visit your safari area some time. Thanks again.
This is a brilliant informative video, I have spent a lot of time configuring my new R5 already but I will rethink some items after watching this! Thanks very much
Thank you so much for the information! I just purchased a R5 and will be using this video to set it up!
This is by far the best video I have seen for setting up the Canon R5. Very well done and so informative!
Hi, thanks so much Dave, I am really glad if it assisted you! cheers Janine
Best video I've seen on R5 video settings. Thanks.
Fantastic help and probably the best one on the R5 across RUclips, thank-you. I now have my camera fairly similar to your settings less a few but you explained it so clearly with thought and passion. Another great RUclips so all I have to do is book a safari now😂😂📸👏👏👏🇬🇧❤️👍❤️❤️❤️🤓
Comprehensive and clear advice. Very helpful
Awesome video. Really helpful. Very well presented. I took use of a majority of your settings . Keep up the good work! Thanks.
Have been using my new Canon R5 more and it is a big struggle as I switched from Nikon D500.
This video is actually very informative and one of the best.
I am going back and forth on you tube to different speakers and she has helped incredibly.
Very good. I programmed some camera functions I hadn't thought about before It's a complicated beast. However I love my M-fn button which is programed to switch c1-c3 which are set to c1=1.6 crop in Tv, C2= Av in FF, C3= M with auto ISO. The 4th press puts the cam back in whatever the normal mode is set for. My control ring on the lens is set to select AF mode as I occasionally like zone for BIF on a white sky. Great work. Love your vids.
Just watched this to help me set up my new R5 with the 100-500 so off so thank you so much for making this so easy to follow 👍
Excellent video. Thank you!
This is so helpful - comprehensive, articulate, every choice is explained, the best "set up" video I've come across and I've watched quite a few so far. Thank you!
So glad it helped out - cheers Janine
Really great tutorial. Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge and experience. A game changer for me...
Perfectly explained and presented !
Thank you! This is very helpful!
Thank you so much for this video 🙏🏻
Great information Janine! Thank you.
Just got R5, lucky found out this video, I saw I knew enough information to set up. But, I still have so much info to learn from you. Thanks again.
Glad I could help!
Excellent video with lots of information. Thanks. I wish I had this camera during my visit to South Africa in March of 2020.
This was great! I love that Canon uses many of the same menus on most of their cameras and I can use some of these settings on my Canon. Thanks so much!
Very true - great recognition value - cheers Janine
I could not find a video to guide me to set up the new R7 - although different in many ways, it helped to get started - now I have to see what result we can get with it. Thanks for the detailed explanations.
Very helpful. Thank you.
Extremely good she is, i think she solved one of my biggest blurry pics problems.Great teacher
Glad to hear
Greetings from Turkey, nice explanation, thank you, I made the settings even though I do not know English.
Very very helpful. Thank you.
Simply the best! I will play with it in the next couple of weeks.
My dad's favorite song from Tina Turner :) Thanks for watching - cheers
Excellent video. I discovered that setting my video settings and then registering them to C3 means when the red button is pressed, the camera switches to video based on C3 settings.
Perfect presentation - Thank you so much - rdh
Very clear and useful indeed 🙏
Superb instructional video Janine. I’ve just purchased the R5 and finding my way around the camera . Love your Instagram portfolio also. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks so much Ajay - Janine
Thanks, Janine I will definitely be coming back to this video when I've got more used to my R6. I will look out for instructions on the R6 from Charl too. I had to buy it without trying it due to covid but was pleased to find it similar to my old EOS. Hope to see you soon.
Glad it was helpful! Charl's video is out next week. A review vid and also his set up vid.
Thank you so much! Extremely helpful and thank you for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
absolutely brilliant and fabulous!!!!!
Thanks so much Gosse - I am so glad if it helped you - cheers Janine
Tremendously helpful, informative, and well-presented video! Even for my R6 :-). Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your knowledge!
Hi David, thanks so much - there is a separate set up video for the R6 as well - cheers Janine
Excellent preparation and execution for this video. I appreciate your effort here, well done!
I am so glad it was of help - thanks for watching - cheers Janine
Excellent and crisp 👍🙏
Thanks for the great and detail video. I have been using my R5 since last August. My setting on the R5 is pretty much the same as yours. Having two Back Button focus buttons is definitely a must.
Hi Simon, yes.... it is the only way to go if you are a serious photographer. I see the animal eye tracking as a welcomed assistance,... but do trust my own focusing abilities more ... all the best Janine
Fantastic video, thank you so much. Just FYI, you can set 5 different green menus.
Excellent information, easily explained, just waiting on my R5 to arrive now.
Hi Robert, let me know how it goes for you - happy shooting Janine
Learned a lot of useful information that I can use in my bird photography. Thank You.
Hi, I am so glad this helped you to get better acquainted with your R5 - cheers Janine
Using the M-Fn button for switching from photo to video is awesome!! I love it!! The R5C has a physical switch and takes a few seconds to start but on the R5 it's instant 8K!! Another cool trick is using THREE Back Button Auto Focus. I forget the name of the genius RUclipsr who figured it out to give proper credit to but I've been using it for a year now and it's great! AF ON=Zone focus, *=Spot focus, and AF POINT SELECT=Eye Detection ON (the 3rd button HAS to be set for Eye Detection ON but the first two buttons can be set however you wish).
Love Pangolin’s instructional videos. So we’ll done and helpful.
Would be great if could do a tutorial on R5 settings for video. And, thanks for the video vignettes posted.
Thank you for providing all the details of your settings and information about options. Excellent video, extremely useful tips
Hi Caroline, so glad it helped you out with your set up! - cheers Janine
@@PangolinWildlife I am trying to get my brain engaged with your Mfn button issue... a challenge. I didn't realise there was a button option to switch from stills to video settings, so thank you for that idea. I will have a look at that tomorrow.
Well done and very helpful, thank you
thanks so much for watching - cheers Janine
Thank you so much ma’am 😊🙏🏻
Superb
Really helpful video thanks. In particular the transformational suggestion for dual spot and eye detection focus with the * button, which I also never use (d). Just tried it out with a barn owl at dawn and it's great. Thank you very much for this
Hi David, this should really change your entire game out there... in this respect it makes this camera far superior to former DSLRs... enjoy Janine
great helpful video - helped me loads
Thanks so much Norman, happy shooting Janine
Thank You appreciate the information
Hi Robert, so glad it is helping you
Great Canon Camera Vlog, thanks for sharing
thanks... hope there was one or two points that were helpful. cheers
This was really helpful. My wife shoots with the R6 and most all of these settings are able to be set on her camera.
Hi Jim, so glad it helped you guys. Charl will also come out with a detailed set up for the R6 so maybe you can pick up even more tricks there.... we are also planning on a comparison between the two... so stay tuned - cheers Janine
Hey Janine, thanks so much for this video! I (finally, after much saving) got my R5, RF100-500, 2x TC and other bits and pieces yesterday; this video is gold! After many years of “normal” focussing, I’m going to try back button for both eye AF and normal AF, on an upcoming trip: what could possibly go wrong!🤣 Looking forward to some more keepers. Cheers, Mark.
Go for it!
Thank you Janine, You are awesome !
It Is not possible to set full frame on video mode?
Thank you for your answer. (I will come on March 2023 to Chobe Hotel - Hope to see you there )
Thanks!!
I just purchased an R5 and performed the 1.5.2 firmware upgrade. I am using your video to set it up for wildlife. As an inholder in Denali National Park and also scheduled to travel to Africa (Botswana) this winter, I am lookin forward to using the camera. Your video for me is a lot to digest and it requires a bit of pausing and sorting things out but I am anxious to head out and try it. I too have L lens that require the RF adapter and wanted to know if that requires any special considerations. Thanks so much for the video. Living in Alaska is a photographer's dream location. Especially for wildlife. I greatly appreciate your effort.
great !
You have lovely voice and perfect pace...
Thanks a lot 😊
good one, tks Janine
Pleasure.
First time on your FB Site. Very well presented in an easily understood way. Video next
Thank you so much Mike.... I am soon coming out with new content on my FB site.cheers Janine
Just purchased a R5 so this video was really helpful. Have set up the 2 back button focus buttons which are working well. One question: when photographing birds in flight is there any advantage of initiating focus with either button? On a recent session I initiated focus with the eye detection and it appeared to work well. Haven’t had a chance to review images on the computer yet for sharpness.
Best settings. thanx.
You are very welcome, very happy if they help - cheers janine
It is a very heavy video with a lot of good content. Thanks for doing this video.
Hi David, I was worried it is too much of an overload but I guess that is what happens in such a extensive review. It was a huge project for me and I am really glad if it helped... cheers Janine
@@PangolinWildlife It doing to take a lot of work to accomplished you you accomplished in less that 30 minutes. Thanks for this video.
very good video thank you
Thank you too
Great video Janine! I am definitely going make a few tweaks to my camera. I actually bought the R5 for the 45 mp not for video. I'm sure I'm not the only ones. In fact I don't really care about the video at all. I decided to make use of the custom functions making C1 animal eye detection and C2 people. I personally choose to do this so I don't have to go to the menu at all. For me, it makes switching from animals to people or a more manual mode very quick.
Hi David, that is actually a great idea when you work frequently with both. Thanks for that feedback. I still find it a bit cumbersome though to switch through the modes I must admit - cheers Janine
Hi thanks for the vlog on settings it works a treat on my R5. I have found one thing I recently took a series of shots of a couple of Zebra at our local wildlife park. I got great results but the poor camera got very confused using the eye recognition system it must be the patterns around the eye.
I have also used this great video to set up my Canon R
Hi Andrew, I am glad you very able to transit it... cheers Janine
Great stuff! Just moving into the mirrorless R5 from the 5D Mark IV. Did you have any trouble with the quality of images using the old EF Lens on the R5?? cheers
Fascinating exercise Huw, personally, to my eye the digital JPEG was the most black & white of the three! certainly more contrast in the digital. I prefer to take colour and change any picture that doesn't appear to be working then I will convert it to mono in software, where you can even add a red filter. But I understand you initial comments about black & white being not that, so often my pictures have a tendency to have a green hue when printed, but at the end of the day we all see colour or lack there of differently, so if you are happy with the results that's what matters!
I have set the * button but the animal tracking only stays active whilst the button is held down. Is this correct? Love everything else. Very helpful and great advice
Super review. Using the * button for Eye Focus mode is a great idea. I had been using * to switch from the usual One Point focus to the tighter Spot focus, but this is much better. Here’s a suggestion to consider. As I shoot nearly exclusively in Manual/Auto ISO mode, it is seldom necessary to change ISO. So, rather than assigning the new third dial to set ISO, I program it to adjust exposure compensation and the lens dial (on RF lenses or the EF to RF adapter) to ISO. I use either the latter or the screen on those rare occasions when a manual ISO setting is required. This way, each of the three easily accessible dials programs one of the principal adjustments. Main dial for shutter speed and large dial for aperture (as we’re all accustomed to using on the DLSRs) and new, third dial for exposure compensation. The Set button is reserved for returning the focus point to dead center, a method which, for me, is quicker than fumbling with the joystick.
Hi Arthur, so good to hear from you. Glad you are enjoying the new R5 ... yes, I believe the EV is the most intuitive function for the new wheel ... I am just soo used to my set button :) especially because my 1Dxii is still set up this way and I like to keep them similar. - cheers Janine
@@PangolinWildlife
Ah Janine you are such a traditionalist! However as autofocus systems evolve we are all going to have to change our ways
Excellent video,. I bought the R6 a few weeks ago but I returned it because for birds and wildlife the 20mpx were too small when I cropped the images, now I'm waiting for the R5 with the Sigma 60-600mm, 45 MPX is like the bread and butter for birding and wildlife photography, Thank you very much for your time and for sharing it ..
Hi Jorge, maybe you are still interested in Charl's upcoming review of the R6. I personally have been shooting on 20 MPX for the past 5 years and would probably opt for the R6 at that stage. But it so depends on where you work. We do get quite close to our wildlife. cheers Janine
@@PangolinWildlife Hi there, it is great, but Birds in the Everglades National Park are so far and is difficult to approach then, so this is the reason why I opted for R5, 45 mpx make a great difference when crop is necessary, R6 is nice camera l, I test I on the field and I have this crop issue,, 😀❤😊, so, you are very Blessings with the wildlife in your safaris, I dream with this, thank you so much..
Really great...thanks a lot...greetings from Rome
Hi Marco, would love to visit Rome again - it has been a long time. Glad the video helped - cheers Janine
Muy agradecido 🙏🏽🌎
Thank you for a very informative tutorial. I use in a similar manner but have the back button af button to tracking the middle one is set to animal +eye tracking. The depth of preview button on the front of the camera body adjacent to the lens is set to single point (spot). This allows me to cover all three shooting situations very quickly.
Thank you again for all the wonderful content. 👍👍
...is there the option by hot-button to choose between animal and people eye autofocus?🤔
You could programme it as a custom shooting mode and then to your M-Fn button... that allows you to change very quickly - cheers Janine
Thanks so much Fred - great set up you have - cheers Janine
@@PangolinWildlife ...yep, that’s what I did. Was wondering whether I could save up the C2 for something els but obviously not... anyhow, thx. for swift reply!
thank you I have the R6 and learnt quite a bit
Hi, thanks for watching my video. Yes, the two cameras are very similar on many levels. Soon we will have a detailed comparison coming up for the two cameras so stay tuned to our channel! - cheers Janine
@@PangolinWildlife off to Sabi Sands after Easter so thrilled as my first visit there
Thanks for the video .I have been using the R5 for some time for bird photography and have almost everything set as you described. Except the Raw is set to C.raw as there is no noticabe difference except for file size.
Hi, thanks so much for watching - I have heard from quite a few people that they are enjoying this new format. I guess I am a bit superstitious as to using smaller file sizes when having such an amazing large mega pixel sensor but honestly didn't notice a huge difference in the few images I shot that way. cheers Janine
I love my R6. I use the canon 600mm f4 version 2 and the 100-400mm. Have you reviewed the 100-500mm lens yet? I really don’t want to upgrade but it does seem like a lovely lens! I shoot mostly birds so perhaps the upgrade wouldn’t be as necessary?
interesting take on the cannon R5, I am a Nikon shooter, and interesting to compare the two, ONE other point re: the back button focus; on my Nikons, the GRIP and BODY AF-ON switch/ system can be activated independently, ie have the afl/ael button on the body OR the grip activate focus, and the shutter NOT, OR to have one shutter button (body) operate 'normally' despite the AF-ON being activated on the grip ie: this setting ONLY activates back button AF ON the GRIP, NOT the BODY!! - one thing to definately be mindfull of, esp. if you change from portrait to landscape orientation often, or as the subject warrents it.
A very intelligent video.
Cheers Stephen
Hi Janine you videos are exceptional.I have just shot with my R5 and 100 to 500 in Umfolozi game reserve South Africa .The eye detect for birds is excellent but for animals is a disaster with 1.5 firmware update.Would be great if u review the latest firmware .Vasili
Can you let me know if you know about the Canon eos 5dsR for wildlife photography? Thanks a lot.
Its an amazing camera ..I love it.. ❤ Good One mam
Hi Ajay, thank you very much - I am hope the set up helped you
@@PangolinWildlife ya..you are welcome 🙂
you have a really lovely speaking style :)
Thanks so much 🙂🙃🙂
Thanks, quite informative and also of use to R6 users. A couple of comments: You mentioned the phenomenon that the animal eye tracking autofocus is less accurate on some wild animals than on birds and wondered about the reason. As I understand it Canon used domestic pets to "train" the autofocus system and their technical marketing material actually states that it is optimised for cats, dogs and birds. So the less an animal looks like a cat, dog or bird the more the autofocus is likely to struggle. I have e.g. found it to be "less accurate" on horses, although it still works surprisingly well. This brings me to a suggestion you may want to give try when the system struggles to identify the face/eye or locks onto the "wrong" eye: I have found that it is possible to use the touch and drag autofocus to "guide" the system to the correct subject (a little orange circle appears that you drag to the subject and when you release your finger the system locks onto that object). Also when it identifies multiple eyes you can use the joystick to select which one you want to track. Lastly (and I might be wrong) it looks like when you selected the drive mode you selected High Speed Continuous Shooting and not High Speed Continuous Shooting Plus. Just be aware that with the former the maximum burst rate is 8 shots/sec. For 12 shots/sec you need to select the Plus mode. Thanks again for an interesting video.
I linked a video to a great camera focusing set-up from Michael The Maven for the R5/6 & these guys deleted the comment. It allowed you to use a single auto-focus point place it over your subject then hit the hold AF-ON button to activate the Eye-Autofocus onto the selected point it works awesome.
@@stephengatley8144 Thanks!
@Pangolin Wildlife Photography Janine you mentioned that we probably picked the R5 over the R6 because we shoot video. Are you saying if we don't shoot video the R6 or now the R6 Mark II is the better wildlife camera? I just bought the R5 because I got a good deal on it but I have 30 days to return it. Would I be better off with the R6 Mark II if I don't shoot any video at all? Or would the R7 be even better as I mostly shoot birds. Thank you.
Hi Janine, I spoke to Canon about the crop factor and the rep told me that when you use the crop on the R5 you lose a lot of the R5 megapixals maybe more than half. So if this is correct I don't think I will be using it too much. Thoughts?
Thank you for such an intensive and completed tutorial. The quality of the video is superior. Your video definitely shortened my learning process for R5. I still have one puzzle need help. I like to shot with exposure compensation adjust to -1/3 while keep the f stop, speed, and ISO remaining the same. However, with these settings, on M mode, when I reduce the exposure compensation, one of the other three settings will automatically changed. Am I missing some settings? Thank you for helping....
From Canon Live Chat: You would have to use FV mode which has options to be equivalent to M mode and other modes such as P, TV, AV, Canon R5 settings.
For equivalence of M mode, and the set shutter speed, ISO and aperture; on page 106 of the camera manual you can see a chart breaking down functions how to use exposure compensation while manual selecting shutter speed and aperture set.
I too bought the R5 after a guest on Pangolin Kasane safari had one and sang its praises. I don't require video and wish I had watched this video before as seems that the R6 would have done the job. I find that the R5 produces excessive noise even at low ISO. Is this due to the 45 mp sensor?
Nice Video, How do you do the screen recording
