  • An interesting piece of equipment, this pump train is made up of several converted R110A prototype subway cars and a pump car built from a flatcar. The R110A cars were originally test trains used in the 1990s to test experimental technology for the R142-R160 cars.

    R110A: ARGHHHHH I returned
R142A: But you are pump train now
R110A why does this happen to me?
R142: The MTa doesn't need you as a service train anymore, you were only used to test experimental technology for R142s and R160
    R110A: For real?
R160: Bro, you helped us in the 1990s, now us R160s and r142s are built, you sadly had to retire
    R110A: WHY?!?

These cars are honestly better looking than the R142/A’s

The way the seating arrangemen'ts were like yea and the way it looked on the outside but naw the R142/A's look's way better. Even though the inside of the car they have their seat's on the side, that whole interior "to me" look's way better!!!!!!!!!

@@kaifreeman286 Not really. When I saw the mock up at the Transit headquarters in Brooklyn I was very disappointed! The R 110 was the first IRT CARS that had forward facing seats since the old time elevated cars, they were colorful and a comfortable ride. The single seats on the R- 142 near the conductor/motormans cab on is loud frightening & noisy & slams up when a passenger gets up! R- 142 door arrangements are criss cross and the loungitude seating I'm tired of facing people on these cars. I'm sorry I like the 142 cars but the R 110 A looked a lot better that was the original!

Unfortunately they were more combustible as well. I did love their seating arrangements, tho.

Yeah right, like the circle Windows R 11 stainless steel subway cars on division B in 1948/ 1949? At least they were in service and also experimentals rebuilt to modifications to R 34 in 1965. Those cars were supposed to be on the Second Avenue Subway... Only never made it the project was dumped! They made it there after Division B finally opened except this time The R 11/R 34 as the New York City Transit Museum's "Train Of Many Metals" (I had the pleasure of riding it ☺) another historic shame by the mta with those cars so called experimental and the later B Division R 110 B! I never got to ride them at all! Sad. 😭

The MTA should use the remainder r110a’s that are sitting in storage for conversion to r142 and r142 b cars. I don’t know what they should use the r110bs in storage, but it feels like a waste still having them sit around and not scrap them or repurpose them.

Awesome catch DJHammers, I am so glad to see that the R110A is being put to use as a pump train for Maintenance of Way Service. It's interesting to see how part of the R110A pump car gets it's power from the solar panels inside the car. Do you think the R110B's at 207th Street yard will be used as pump trains in the future? I also notice that at 215th Street station on the 1 line, at the end of the platform, you can still find R110A, #8010 and an R110B with the original parts still on the car.

The original Technology train! What a shame to see those beautiful cars as a work pump train instead of passenger service. I was looking forward to riding them on division A. Just like Metro North Railroad did to the BUDD SPV cars, New york city subways didn't care enough about these cars as well! I rode them a few times and they were a luxury ride and smooth! The seats were beautiful color forward facing in every variety of colors! I miss them & the mta blew it! SO much excuses & so much negligence to save them! As for the R 142 cars? The seating arrangements is a slap in the face compare to the R 110! As a subway fan & critic I feel cheated & robbed not to have these cars in service today! Miss you R 110's!
