    I found a birdegg in my backyard yesterday. I tried putting it in its nest but it was too high for me to reach. It's a little white egg with brown spots. I've been taking care of it by putting it in a grey sports headband to keep it warm. Keep in mind though I have no idea how to take care of bird eggs, but that's why I'm watching this. I'm only 15 years old so idk if my dad will say to put it back outside so I'm just gonna keep this a secret for now so I can see if I can take care of it by myself.
    Questions: do I have to put the egg under light at any point (if so, when; what phase of the egg?)
    What should I do to keep it warm if the sports headband wont be enough?

    • @PurpleUnicornBarf
      @PurpleUnicornBarf 3 года назад +2

      The egg needs a heat lamp! Bird eggs need to be at 98°-100° to hatch, a headband will not be enough. Create a diy nest using socks, shine a lamp into the nest, get a thermometer to make sure the temp is right & you would need to rotate the egg hourly. I am currently in a similar situation! A bird left a single egg without a nest in my garage & dipped when it snowed. Unfortunately, the egg seems to be dead as I did the candling thing & there are no veins - just a watery looking blob. Im gonna still incubate for a lil but idk what it'll do. Good luck w/ yours! Remember that if it hatches not to imprint on it too much! Wild birds being too friendly w/ people can be dangerous for them - & they need to learn how to communicate with other birds. Best wishes!!

    I found abandoned Sparrow eggs in a tree. I called a local wildlife park, and they said to take it in because the mom abandoned it a couple days ago. One died from another bird attack, and there was a lucky one who survived. I cannot see if it is fertile, or infertile, because the color of the egg is minty green and has a lot of brown specks. I believe it is still alive because I can see it through the inside of the egg shell. We do not know when the mother bird had them, but this was really helpful!

    Sorry for yr loss. I’ve been watching some of your videos, they are informative. Just a constructive comment. When you want to have successful breeding season may I suggest to keep away from inspections and fiddling the eggs. Birds can smell you touching the eggs and abandon the nest because of interference. Best one can do is to watch them from a distance, have patience and hope for the best. We talk about Gouldians being bad parents, I wonder if this is because of us being to curious. I’ve breed Gouldians for 10 years back in the ‘90s … 20 years later I’m starting all over again with 1 pair of Yellow headed, purple breast and green back. I bought them in march…by May 13 had 2 hatched…they started laying eggs again June 15. I’ll be counting the days from the day one of the parents rotate their duties in keeping the eggs warm. By end of the month they would have hatched. Its then when I’ll make my next inspection. Thank you for your videos!!!

    • @MrAviary
      @MrAviary  2 года назад

      True I know but it's a trade-off between my curiosity, showing you guys everything and the best breeding season. That's also the reason I don't like to ring them.

    The other day when me and my boyfriend went to workout in our building we saw a bird and then another one with a hurt wing so we caught them and we threw this box out of our way luckily though I saw the box and there were two eggs on it one egg flew across the box though so I picked it up and put in back on the nest and let one of the birds out at the nest (the other one flew away) I'm still confused alittle but I out the eggs back because the birds Haven't came back (we don't think) but I really need advice on what to do with them. One of the eggs have a circle in the middle and the other one is just yellow all inside the egg. Should I get them and try to keep them alive or should I leave them alone Incase the mom/dad take care of them. 🥺

    • @MrAviary
      @MrAviary  3 года назад

      I think you should leave them alone. If the parents did abandon them there is only a little change the eggs will survive now. And rearing chicks is tough and difficult. They are probable making a nest somewhere else, let nature so his thing.

    Hi great informative video! My parakeet couple has laid 3 eggs but it’s been two weeks since the first one and the female hasn’t been really sitting on them, sometimes she goes in but comes right on out and at night sleeps with her male companion on the high perch. Will the embryos start to progress after she starts to lay on them or that has nothing to do with if an egg is viable? I candled the eggs and they look like an in between of your first two pictures but like I said it’s been like two weeks since she laid the first one and a week and a half since the second one and about 2-4 days since the 3rd one thank you very much!

The bowl is located inside a plastic reptile carrying case we had for our tortoises with a heat lamp (no light, only heat) above. We turn the eggs a few times a day and try to keep the temps around 98-100 degrees F, and 50-75% humidity. Do you think this will work or should I order an actual incubator? Thanks in advance! 🥚🐣

    I have a question. How quickly does the development from day 1 to day 5 look obvious? Also, how can you tell if there are veins in very small eggs? And how early and often should you candle an egg? Is there another way to check for fertility? The ones that I am looking at are mostly white, but they aren't yellow in the spots where we see yours is yellow.

    • @elenalily4329
      @elenalily4329 4 года назад +3

      The development is not obvious for day one to five, but candling too much during this time period can harm the chick's growth. It is better to wait until day five to candle. Try not to candle before day five. Another way to check for fertility is the float or sink test. Get a bin of warm water, GENTLY place the egg in, and if it floats, it is fertile! Sinking means it is most likely infertile, but candle to be sure. DO NOT DO THIS UNTIL AT LEAST DAY 7! You may not see anything in there during day one, but your may be infertile! Incubate it to be SURE!

    My zebra finches laid eggs. Two eggs. It was their second clutch. But they buried the eggs, so my dad took them out and I started to take care of the eggs. We dont have an incubator, I put the eggs in a bowl with nesting material in it, and I put a lamp above it. I dont know if that is the best way for me to do it, but it is the only way i guess. One of the eggs broke, I came home from school and decided to turn the eggs when I found one of them broken. So now I have one zebra finch egg, and I just candled it. There is an embryo that is the size of the day 8 embryo. But there is only a few veins. What does that mean? Is the egg gonna hatch?

    • @MrAviary
      @MrAviary  3 года назад

      It's quit hard to incubate an egg without an incubator, because an incubator also controls the humidity. It is important to prevent the egg from drying out but it can not stand being to wet. You can try to keep a water source near your egg to increase the local humidity. But remember if it hatches it is also very difficult to keep it alive without a proper heatsource and you have to feed it every other hour. So only if you have that time it is wise to hatch eggs by yourself

      If it looks like that after 10 days of solid breeding it was fertile but did not survive

      If she is gone for a couple of days they already died, unfortunately. They can only survive a couple of hours without heat.

      How do you keep them? It is very hard to keep eggs alive without a parent bird.

      Homemade incubators help, but they require 24 hour watching and turning, and spraying, and cleaning...
