Your rubber band visual was brilliant. Just to offer my 2 cents: Getting the speakers deeper into the room is ALWAYS going to give you a more interesting stage. Dont trust your eyes, even if the speakers look weird out so far, just trust your ears. Heck, my #1 placement trick is doing this at night and turn the lights off as you listen. This will help you get there real quick.
I think people underestimate the room itself and treating that. It doesn't have to be egg cartons on the wall and giant foam tubes in the corners (though certainly that would probably help most people) but just lay down soft, sound absorbent rugs, have long and thick-ish curtains that also soak up echoes, and just try to soften the room and add more stuff to prevent reflections.
Yeah, you can make quite attractive sound absorbers - felt is another attractive material you can wrap them in. You can also do something like make square ones in different colors and tile them on the wall so it looks more like art, etc. And making your own panels is dirt cheap, $20 per panel is perfectly attainable. Some DIY required, of course - unless you just buy ready made panels.
When i studied film and video, same thing similar to microphone placement. As I went on to become a professional sound engineer, what you shown was the basic principle for sound placement it is important for people to show what you explained, kudos to you! Thanks! Also to note, in small rooms reflection of sound finding the sweet spot of optimal positioning and how soft furnishings effect the absorption of sound, like curtains carpets sofa's.
I've found that in my living room with its odd shape and the speakers I'm working with (Bose 141's) if I puts them at ear height and as close as 6 feet apart, they sound very thin and cheap. What I discovered was that putting them on floor shelves near the corners of the room and tweaking the right frequencies just a little, they use the room to produce a huge full range of frequencies. They sound huge and a lot more accurate.
And that's the exact reason what keeps me off of the speakers. I don't want to mess with that. I'm kinda an OCD guy and I'm pretty sure that speaker placement thing would make me go crazy.
Super helpful. I have my bookshelf speakers about three inches off the ground in a small room in a console with my turntable and I think I can get way better sound by moving them higher up at least.
I wish I could find people who actually cared about all this such as yourself. I'm so picky about all this although I've never had really great quality sound systems. Right now I'm using an ion sport xl and its everything I need in a speaker its got a good balance of highs minds and low sounds and works good to me pointed at me or even away.
That is a really good discussion of speaker placement, I also like the speakers to be relatively speaking at eye level and depending on the speaker, pointed at me or slightly turned I remember the audiophiliac had a discussion about speaker placement, the one thing I remember him saying is that you don’t want it against the wall because it muffles the sound.
Joshua Valour 20K, got a nice ring to it, you’ll be at 50K before you know it. I first found your channel when you were at 170 or so, and I was soaking-up reviews of the HD-600/650 line before purchasing my 6XXs.
when measuring speaker distance from the wall, the measure points are the center-front of speaker and the wall not the back of the speaker and the wall. no manufacturer is expecting people to have enough space in their home to have speakers placed so far away from the front wall.
I realize these are pretty basic tips. But! For this topic there isn’t a whole lot to say. I plan to do more speaker topic videos like this that will be more complex. I wanted a nice and easy intro into that. Hope you enjoy! Also stick around for Monday!
Joshua Valour good work bud, Man, when all the hard work pays off and you position them just right, that holographic out of the speakers experience is phenomenal. The sound should never come from the speakers you should not even be able to pinpoint where they are on a high-end system, when life and situation permits and I get to set up my genlec Studio monitors just right in my living room, they blow my mind, I don’t think I’ve ever heard detail and transparency as well as precise precision in soundstage that these do.
try to remember that these tips are not for every speaker. Always read the manual. My Electro Voice Interface C speakers are specifically designed to be placed 1 to 2 inches from a wall and at least a foot from a corner. If is was to follow your tips they would sound like crap.
Tell me, what should be the distance from the walls to the left and right? I don't have a wall on my left, and a right - cupboard, and it seems to me that the sound is wrong. Because if I go to a distance, I can hear the bass, and when I sit in front of the monitor, I do not hear the bass, for example, in the distance.
Ok I'm in a trailer home with 2room acess, wanting to know if and how to get the maximum sound with a Sony 12 in sub w a bottom rear ported box. I'm wanting to know because I have a huge recliner in here. I'm thinking it takes a lot of the thump? Shall I remove this?
Joshua, what's up with that volume knob! I know that amp wasn't cheap, when you said there was cosmetic problems I was thinking scratches. Then you turned the knob and my jaw dropped! WTF man! Also it looks to me like there's an issue with the front coating on the knob. Looks like there's paint missing or something. I would go nuts if I got a new amp and it was that messed up. You where a really good sport about it! Love your channel BTW
How much would you spent on speaker isolation? I have dali Zensor 1 (really great speakers for 200€) and they came with little rubber feet. Do you think those rubber feet are enough isolation or should I get big foam pads or even those expensive isoacoustic stands?
Thanks for the great video. I was going to mount my speakers to the front walls but it sounds like I should maybe just get two movable shelves like you have. QUESTION - I came into Paradigm ADP 170 v2 speakers: Centre, Left, Right, Rear Left, Rear Right. The rear speakers seem to be pointed in two directions. So take Rear Left for example. If the back mount and wire holes are facing the back wall, then the speaker is pointing in both left and right directions. The side opposite of the back mount is just a flat wooden part. I've never seen this before. I believe it is called Bipole speakers. Is there a particular way I am supposed to arrange these rear speakers?
I have my speakers on my desk, that is covered by an xxl mouse mat. Will that affect the sound? Will it absorb the vibrations? It actually sounds lacking. And they're pretty big speakers.
What is the best I can get for $400, It doesn't matter if it's powered bookshelf speakers or two speakers and a receiver, soundbar with sub, 3.1 soundbar, etc. whatever you can think of give me the best for under $400! I need them to hook up to a TV for movies and music, I want the best combo for $400?
So does the same logic about equilateral triangles apply to a surround setup like my 5.1 computer speakers? I set them up and they are all about a foot higher than my head / monitor, wall mounted. Do the rules for the rear speakers change?
In a 5.1 system the center channel is the most important one. The other 4 are just for effects. So i d say id does not apply too. Maybe the two front effect channels could also benefit from that rule but certainly not the back speakers

Egg cartons don't do anything.
Solid speaker stands will improve the sound even more

so angle desk speakers up or bring to ear level?
If I point my near-field speakers at me they don't sound as good as if I point them at a spot about a metre behind my head.
