I always tell competition first-timers two important things: 1- Competing is in itself a skill that takes time. You have to learn to manage your own nerves (and potentially a nervous partner). That takes time (ie multiple competitions), and it will likely be in play every time you compete, especially when you advance to the next level. 2- K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid). The competition floor is NOT the place to experiment. As a leader, do not try to lead patterns that you've never done (or practiced) before. As a follower, do not try crazy styling choices that you haven't practiced before.
