Congratulations, Professor Vincent Ricaniello. Thank you for the kindness of sharing your knowledge with us. Thank you so much for making a better world.
Bravo Vincent! What an honor. One positive thing about this pandemic is that I discovered you on RUclips and watch your shows each week. Congratulations!
I AM SO PROUD OF YOU, VINCENT RACANIELLO!!! I feel like a member of my own family got this wonderful award! Kudos and affection from an avid twiv listener for two years.
Vincent should by all means receive the science communicator award of the decade. No one person has done more to bring people together across fields and age groups, many folks have made a difference but Vincent is an exceptional example of making a difference.
Dr. Racaniello. Once again you've done an outstanding job with your lecture. I feel quite privileged to have become "acquainted" with your previous and ongoing work. I share your podcasts consistently with many and rely on it in my teaching of nursing at the University of Utah. You so deserve this award! I only go to you and your colleagues for ALL virology issues. As I sit here experiencing COVID for the first time (fully vaccinated x 3) I am not too worried. Mild symptoms so far and fully cognizant of what to look for in my immunocompromised and currently ill with COVID husband. Glad to have had your extensive education and information.
I’m so proud and happy for Vincent. One of my new heroes and one of the few positive things that came out of the otherwise horrible and never ending Covid experience.
This is a great lecture that actively demonstrates effective science communication from the big picture to the nitty gritty details. Congratulations Vincent!
Congratulations Vincent! It brought tears to my eyes to see you recognized so far away after watching so many of your TWi's the last two years! Great title for your talk! Reminds me of the "I fell in love with worms" TWiV epitope!
Great lecture and panel. The first time I was exposed to TWIV was studying the debate on dual use H1N1 (if I recall) research in ferrets for undergraduate virology course and here we are a decade later still defending the "scary" gain of function studies. Kudos to Dr. VR and colleagues for tirelessly speaking the science.
Dr. Vincent makes me happy. I finally found someone who makes sense in all this, the last year has been wonderful being able to be part of that channel. TWIV is great -all the scientists are just fabulous☮️
my man!! thanks for posting this video Dr. V! I've watched lots of your content, TWI* episodes, Q&A, your YT course, clinical updates, etc.. first time I've watched your freeform presentation style and it was wonderful! kudos to you and the crew for the award and the continued efforts to drill this info into our heads. See you this evening for Q&A with A & V!
Vincent definitely doesn't get as much of a public voice as he should and it's, as he said, because he's not an alarmist. He's not willing to say things that aren't true in order to get an audience. The irony is..that's why people SHOULD listen to him.
@@jeffalexander5842 I think the U.S. response could have benefitted from a more precautionary principle kind of fear of SARS-CoV-2. Or just some humility.
Not done watching the whole thing but before I forget, wow!!! This presentation is superb! All the work you did over the years clearly has made this a superb presentation, with excellent verbal communication and excellent slide show. I hope Twiv and the non-profit organization continues into the future. If it does, many high caliber scientists will continue to come and listen, also! 👍👏👏🎖 Edit: Your hosts and the audience were superb, very friendly! The music is classy and the flower arrangement is phenomenal. The Swiss are first class hosts!
Vincent on brilliant form here! Congratulations… & all delivered with no notes. He knows and understands his stuff. Yes, improving our knowledge of science in his every word. Big thanks from an old TWiVer. Hope this gets very wide coverage and all those thousands of followers catch it. We need to pay attention to ‘experts’ again.
Wow! This is fantastic! I've followed the TWiV podcast when it was audio only (recommended by XM110 Dr Radio) and it's now on video, making it even more interesting. Prof Racaniello is easy to listen to and inspires us to continue watching. He has become my "Neil deGrasse Tyson" of virology. He truly deserves this honor. You can see his passion for teaching. I am a continuing fan as my Dad suffers from the lasting effects of polio and I appreciate his research.
Excellent presentation . Congradulations. I love how you can bridge both the science language and main stream. I really appreciate you taking the time to teach us lay people. That is an extra special skill. I have never felt stupid learning from you, even it I didn't always understand. So glad you are not lost in your head and connect with everyone. You make science fun, interesting and applicable to every day life. You kept me grounded during this pandemic. I have great respect for you.
👍👍👍👍👍Bravo!!! Earth's Virology Professor!!! ( My Professor!!🥰🥰🥰🥰😘😘😘) ❤❤❤❤❤Congrats 👏 Amazing speech!!! You are truly a gifted Professor and Scientist. It is a rare thing to be so talented in both!! I'm so glad I found you !!!!!❤🥰❤❤❤❤❤
This is what I would post on videos that would go on about how dangerous "gain of function" research is. I got what I would consider to be bad faith attacks because if it. Science is hard. Jumping to conclusions is easy. Understanding the jargon they use is part of what makes it so hard to understand. It sounds like a foreign language because most of it is, it's Latin. Even plain English terms can be misleading. "Gain of function" is one of them. During a pandemic its easy to see how people would think that "gain of function" would mean gain in mortality or ease of transmission. It does not, the function gained can be anything. Even something that is not harmful to humans can be called a gain of function. It just has to be something it could not do before. Part of the reason you do gain of function research is to try to understand the probability of a specific virus becoming more or less dangerous to humans. Understanding that can help people decide where to put funds for the development of treatments to fight possible emerging viral infections. You don't want to put money into researching treatments for a virus that has little chance of becoming a danger to humans OR livestock. "Gain of function" sounds scary and this is not the first time it's been used to cause fear in those who don't understand virology. Jumping to conclusions is easy. Science is hard.
For that resistant 20% they are emotionally driven and motivation comes from a different space. So replying just with logic won,t work. They may be scared, frightened by previous experience. They may be driven by status, why they hold to their viewpoints, insecurity in their lives. Angered by partial knowledge of previous things going very wrong. They require a lot of listening … very different sets of skills….. whatever you do must not take opposing sides. Stay very calm but also support their listening…..
May I ask your expert statement about use of face mask in outdoors in a tropical country like the Philippines where mask mandates have not been lifted even with less than 200 covid cases a day and 70% double vaxxed.
Wow 36 Likes, got to be kidding folks. Vincent you and your team are Legend, it has been a privilege to listen to you all and learn what we do and do not know. Thanks you for your generosity. I have gone right back to the beginning and I'm now on epitope Twiv 101: Sizing up adenovirus. Hoping to get to NY in July and given half a chance I will drag the family to the Incubator, to be fair if I get them to the bagel store I will have done well. This award has been so well deserved Vincent, if you were a Brit you would be a Sir by now.
Hi Liz, same here actually. Ironically, I didn't know about Vincent until deciding to watch a Lex Fridman episode featuring the famous virologist!!
I'm a huge fan of TWIV....

Very well deserved glad to get the chance to listen to this Vincent 👏
A fanfare for Vincent.
Discovering TWIV and the rest of the stable has been a rare bright spot among the pandemic gloom.
Bravo!
The man who thinks he is to old for RUclips... is very smart and articulate.... I would subscribe to his channel in a minute.

I think we should stop fearmongering about how bad fear is.
Or fearmongering about fearmongering about fear
Sorry it's the natural parent instinct in me

Oh it could have been better in a lot of areas.
Well deserved! Congrats! (Big fan of the TWIV series - helped me tons during the pandemic!)

Yay! Well deserved. I discovered TWIV and have become a devoted fan. I love your manner and your smile
Yes. He seems to really like us, people out there who want to hear the good stuff. He does not mind how clever or educated we are or are not.
Well done…you know how to deliver a great lecture!
What a beautiful opening with French horns playing.
Fantastic lecture! I've shared it on Facebook & Twitter, noting the "rational and accurate facts about Covid" at the end.
You are our virology rockstar! Congratulations 🎉
He's the Elton John of germs.
You are awesome Dr Racaniello
Congratulations Vincent for this well deserved medal. Keep doing what you are doing and people will follow!

If I might ask, who was the composer, and is the sheet music available?
My compliments to the multi-talented hornists.
