I was seeing this dude in a kiddie shirt at a high school that had cheerleaders in black dresses with tattoos all over them. The album "Nevermind" was the album that made Alternative/Grunge a huge success in the 1990's.
I was 23 when this album came out and when I put it in the tape deck of my ‘86 Ford Escort, the tape deck ejection mechanism broke. I listened to this entire tape for two months straight until I could figure out how to get it out. Still remember where I was and what I felt the first time I heard this song! 😊
The drummer is Dave Grohl who went on to form The Foo Fighters, who are still a huge hard rock band Robert Plant of Zepoelin has referred to the grunge scene is Seattle as America’s own home-grown punk.
This represents teenage and young adult angst in the early 90's. I grew up on this and gotta say these lyrics are still prevalent to this day. Especially nowadays. An amazing band and so talented. The drummer, Dave Grohl, went on to start his own band The Foo Fighters after Kurt Cobain died, may he rest in peace. This was the band from Seattle that really got the Grunge Alternative Rock music introduced to everyone. Great react video. Thank you!
This song dropped on me and my college friends like an atomic bomb. We were in LA at the time into the LA/Hollywood alt rock club scene. And in 1991 these guys showed up out of no where and changed the freaking world. We just stood there. We couldn't believe what we were hearing.
You've heard this song before because this was the single that killed hair band metal and ushered in the 90's. Every radio station that isn't country was blasting it. That includes pop, rap and country stations. Nirvana was the voice of my generation and it's a timeless sound.
Yep. Younger people today don't really have a sense of how transformative this song, and Nirvana as a band in general, was. To give you an idea; this song knocked Michael freaking Jackson off the top of the chart. And that was MJ in his prime.
Radio stations still play it all the time. I can understand a young person who only listens to rap not hearing it much, but it’s a hard song to have never once heard.
The best part of this video is when they first heard Cobain’s voice. Their faces said it all. Truly a great artist lost before his time. I remember being a teenager and hearing about his death on MTV when the news first broke. Watching you two enjoy this and dance to it is the best!
Some young people today may not fully fathom how this song changed the whole thing. Imagine being 17 year old, having gone through a whole decade of suffering some of the shittiest prefab mainstream music ever on the radio that meant nothing to you, then all of a sudden, some late-summer afternoon, hearing that guitar riff exploding and freaking sweeping the whole world in a matter of weeks... I thank you eternally, Kurt, Krist and Dave.
Real hand made music and people who have unique voices are so rare. It's always "what can be Sold ans ist the trend today?" And a lot of Autotune... And my personal Feeling about music today is, that the emotions, whether happy or angry, are only let out with the handbrake on. Just not too much of anything and above all no lyrics that are critical or go really deep...
Considered the greatest song of the 90s! Fun facts: first, this song was written about a popular spray people used like fabreze. Kids would stay home and smoke weed and use Teen Spirit to cover the smell so their parents wouldn’t smell it. I know, because I used it back in the early 90s. 😂
I was in my early twenties when this song exploded and singlehandedly killed hair metal. One of the most iconic songs of the decade, anyone who likes music can see why this song in particular had such an effect on all of us. Kurt will always be missed and revered for his talent and his impact on popular music

Since you’ve opened the box to one of the great culture shifts - grunge/alternative rock - some suggestions/requests for the other “most influential” bands & songs. I’m sure there’ll be others I’ve missed , but these are the ones that really define the era for me... Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night? (The MTV Unplugged performance). In Bloom. Pearl Jam - Jeremy. Alive. Even Flow. Soundgarden - Spoonman. Black Hole Sun. Outshine. Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike (this is a bonus...it’s a combo of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden band members) Alice In Chains - Man in the Box. Would. Rooster. Stone Temple Pilots - Plush. Big Empty. Interstate Love Song. Smashing Pumpkins - Today. Cherub Rock. Tonight, Tonight. Rage Against the Machine - (you got them 😉) Feel free to pick and choose. 🎸🥁🎤🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

Hello hello hello how low? Kurt threw a party and conked out on Golden Girl, when he woke up the place was trashed and it was written on the wall "Kurt smells like teen spirit" teen spirit was a women's deodorant, but Kurt thought it meant something else

100% this song is 100% get x
Same thing happened in Texas, College Station and Austin. Hair bands felt ancient.
Must have been amazing to witness history
Happy seeing youngsters discover great music. The whole album is amazing, please check out more of their catalog when you can.
Black - Pearl Jam Live at MTV Unplugged!! This is an absolute must listen, and a gem of a performance from the 90s rock era
And *Jeremy* as well, the uncensored official video.
Love that song .!!!
Jay z used the lyrics to this song on his song "holy grail" too. Classic tune.
Classic? No, it was revolutionary!
The best part of this video is when they first heard Cobain’s voice. Their faces said it all. Truly a great artist lost before his time. I remember being a teenager and hearing about his death on MTV when the news first broke. Watching you two enjoy this and dance to it is the best!
That song marks the exact moment, when the 80s ended and the 90s begun... At least for me. Great times!
Yaaass! Finally Nirvana! Check out “ Come as we are”, “ Lithium”, “ Heart Shaped Box”, “ All apologies”, “ In Bloom”
Add to that list "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" from MTV Unplugged.
*Come as you are
Where did you sleep last night, now that's a real classic, Nirvana did a great job with that song...
Rest in Peace, Kurt - finally+💖🙏
You are remembered fondly by many who
hope to see you again - in Paradise✨👑
Fun fact. I didn't know this. Thank you for sharing 😊
Teen Spirit was a brand of deodorant.
It was deodarant and one of his friends wrote Kurt smells like teen spirit with a sharpie on a wall the rest is history
greatest ripp-off of the 90's...of the Pixies
Teen spirit deodorant was marketed to tweens and teenage girls.
29 years later and I still get chills when Kurt takes that 1st leap into the chorus. Generation X exploding onto the scene.
This came out the year I was born so I grew up hearing this song 👌
@@kayameyamamoto I was 18 that year. Best times of my life in the early 90s!
Still remember driving around in my pos car rocking out to all this. Miss the 90's
@@jeremypatton80 I regret not slowing down and experiencing the 90s more than I did.
Yeah i wish he was still alive to see this 😭
I was in my early twenties when this song exploded and singlehandedly killed hair metal. One of the most iconic songs of the decade, anyone who likes music can see why this song in particular had such an effect on all of us. Kurt will always be missed and revered for his talent and his impact on popular music
You’ve heard it before because this song is THE song that started the Grunge movement. So this song is iconic. Its THE 90’s song. It’s been in EVERYTHING.
wayouttatune2 so it started the grunge movement then. 🤷🏻♂️
Sounds like the proper term would be it gave the grunge movement traction
@@TheLinc78 Don't think you know how movements work. It takes a star to step out to create progress.

Lol same. For me would be this year
Welcome to Nirvana and the 90's, my darlings! You are at the beginning of a very good time for music!
'Lithium' is insane. Literally insane, as in, written by a crazy person. Has insane energy, insane lyrics and is insanely good.
Lithium is used to treat bipolars, would make sense.
You mean genius. It’s often mistaken as insane evidence it’s so hard to truly wrap your head around
That was his mood when he wrote it. Pure genius
This guy’s voice is like 30 years older than him 😱 in a good way!
I went to diverse HIgh School and every click, every different color of people were huge nirvana fans when this came out. They was huge..Kurt a legend
Check out ''In Bloom'' ''Lithium'' ''Breed'' ''Come as you are'' ''Heart shaped Box'' They actually dont have a bad song! R.I.P Kurt
Yesss!!! Finally got some Nirvana. This is the song that defined the 90's, y'all!! Great pick!!!!! Love from Cali
i wish kurt could have gotten help heroin took control of his life and the shot gun ended his life.
Define the 90s, you and I remember when this killed big hair
@@anthonygajewski1464 A divorce would've been just as good for him.
For the past couple if months I've been watching reaction videos to songs that i grew up listening to from the 80's/early 90's. This one is by far the most entertaining one I've seen so far. You guys were sooo into it and I could tell that you genuinely liked the song. Had me dyin!😂😂😂😂
I was showing my 6 year old grunge and Nirvana. First thing we came across was this video. Now, she'll only watch the video with you two rocking out to it. She wants me to tell you Hi lol
This song changed rock music. It killed the hair bands of the 80s and ushered in a great new age.
lol no it did not Thrash metal killed hair metal, and that was done more specifically by the bands, Exodus, Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth and Overkill.
Thank you Nirvana!
After this most rock stations dropped the hair bands and started playing Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam , Soundgarden, Alice in Chains ect...

I liked the reaction but it was driving me crazy when he would sing the hook wrong lol
Every time Kurt would go to a party, he would say here we are now, entertain us. That's where that lyric came from.
I was just born when this song came out and I still remember hearing my mom listening to it when I was 4 years old. If Kurt was still alive he would be mind blown right now knowing today's youth are still jamming to this classic. I feel kinda old 😅
The ultimate Gen-X anthem. I was seventeen two days before this single came out. Part of my life's soundtrack back then.
Whenever I feel sad I must listen to this song to take me back to the actual moment I saw this on MTV for the very first time and I’m awestruck again and I’m transformed back into that very moment in time.

"Hunger Strike" is a grunge all star collab.
One of the best grunge songs ever.
That whole temple of the dog album rocks... Of course it would have never happened without Andrew Wood and Mother Love Bone...

Well guys, you’ve now really stepping into my era.
Outshine.
Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike (this is a bonus...it’s a combo of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden band members)
Alice In Chains - Man in the Box. Would. Rooster.
Stone Temple Pilots - Plush. Big Empty. Interstate Love Song.
Smashing Pumpkins - Today. Cherub Rock. Tonight, Tonight.
Rage Against the Machine - (you got them 😉)
Feel free to pick and choose. 🎸🥁🎤🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I whole heartedly 100% percent agree with every band and song on this list. I absolutely second everything @Crimson Wring said, I could not come up with a better list myself. just spot on really. Maybe I would add Vasoline to the STP list and Rear View Mirror to the Pearl Jam list, but that is me being nit picky and adding two other songs I really like personally.
