The best teaching video ever. Thank you! I really love that there is no hurry, no haste. I have the time to process and learn. I never thought I'd watch a video this long, but it feels like sitting with you in your room. I' m not that patient and often cut corners "to create that rustic look", or to just get it done so I can start another impulsive project, but now I can do it with an air of the correct technique at least. ❤
I have watched 10-15 other videos trying to figure out what quilting is all about. I thought it was all about squares. Now, I understand what is really important. Thank you for this wonderful video!
Actually, Alex Anderson is a great teacher & has been teaching at least since 1990's. She has many, many hand quilting videos available AND she is left handed.
@@nancy-katharynmcgraw2669 … Also.. look at Becky Goldsmith. She has excellent videography, with real close-ups so that you can see what she is doing. She also offers online classes.
I have been involved in all manner of quilting, classes, tutorials, for 45 years. Your tutorial is one of the most comprehensive tutorials (classes) I have ever seen. You didn’t miss a single thing about hand quilting (thinking of the little detail about working out that pesky thread knot with your fingernail). An excellent refresher for experienced hand quilters and an invaluable resource for new hand quilters, I hope this re-inspires both former hand quilters and those new to the art. Thank you for your generosity sharing your skills and knowledge!
If only more crafts or all crafts could be passed on this way to the next generation how wonderful would that be, we would have a lot of ancient knowledge. Thank you for this.
What an incredibly detailed comprehensive description of materials, tools, and sewing techniques used for hand quilting. The method of balancing the needle between the top and underneath thimbles is so interesting. I also liked the method of using your needle to sweep below the top layer of fabric to sweep the thread tail out of sight from the top of the quilt. Loved the advice on preserving your thumb and wrist from pain. This is the hand quilting tutorial I have been searching for. Thank you so very much!!
I've watched a lot of videos and yours is the only one I've found that explains what is going on with the bottom hand when stitching. It's as if a light switch was turned on for me. Thank you very much.
Your instructions are marvelous! Been quilting for 30 yrs, you covered such important issues. I learned much from this video, Thank you, and please keep teaching us.
I wish my grandmother was alive as she also hand quilted. Thank you for doing this on RUclips for me to learn. I have learned so much from you. It beautiful and planning to try it.
Thank you!! I feel like I just attended a class for beginners. You explain everything so well, and it is a joy to watch you work. You have so much expertise!!!
Wow, this video is pure gold - thank you so much for such a detailed and carefully presented video covering so many golden nuggets of information to help someone like me learn to hand quilt. You have a brilliant teaching style, and I thoroughly enjoyed this video! Thank you so much!!

My mom hand quilted, she embroidered tops then allowed me to patchwork. The quilting frame was a part of the dinning room… she gifted me with a white on white that totally shows off her work. I cherish it. Glad you’re showing how to keep that hand art alive. Thank you.
I learned how to hand quilt when I was old enough to do I, about 50+ years ago. I’ve made quilts for my children as wedding gifts, parents and in- laws plus a few all hand quilted. It is fun to add personal touches into the stitches, their hobbies etc. it makes for an even more personal gift. This is a nice video teaching a dieing art. Thank you.

This was an absolute joy of a lesson, thank you so much for this video. I was searching for a simple diy quilting project to use up some nice fabric scraps i didn't want to go to waste, but instead i found a master of the craft, and i am humbed. WOW ❤ Very informative tutorial for hand quilting. You are a master of hand quilting. You have inspired me with practice and patience I can do it too.😊
Thank you so very much. I am now 70. When I started quilting this was how I started out. I think I may go back and hand quilt my next quilt. I have been using my sewing machine. I appreciate the reminder. Your work is flawless. I appreciate you. By the way, I actually use a leather sticky dot on my underneath finger. I started out using blue painters tape but after getting stung I switched to the leather thimble. On top I use my fingernail. I have never been comfortable with a thimble on my finger. I wished I had learned to wear one but have tried many and just never found one that was comfortable. I use a large oval stand up frame and straight back chair when I quilt. The last quilt I did was a Queen size.

She had a wooden frame over her extra bedroom bed that could be let down from the ceiling and she'd sit and quilt for hours. And lot's of time's her friends who quilted would come and they would make a day out of it and lunch, etc. i
What a great video. I am looking forward to improve my work with start including some of your advices. Most likely it will take a few weeks before I will be used to it, but it´s very good to see such an experienced hand quilter teaching and talking like I would have a hand quilting class lesson. - Very happy, that I found this channel.
A comprehensive guide to hand quilting. So much information about every aspect of it, and as someone who will be undertaking my first attempt at hand quilting shortly, I'm so glad I found it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I’m getting ready to hand quilt my first quilt. I’m a long arm quilter typically, but have enjoyed doing some smaller projects with a big hand stitch, and no hoop. This video was very informative for me, especially on how to use the hoop, starting in the middle, needle and the thread sizes for hand quilting. Thank you for putting this video together, I’m sure it will help a lot of people.
You have inspired me to pick up my needle and hand quilt again. I have been hand quilting since I started quilting in the 80’s. But have never had a lesson. Just did what felt good. It surprised me how much of what you’re teaching, I already knew how to do. Everyone else I know is a machine quilter. Or else they send out their work for someone else to quilt. I just don’t like that idea. Now I am inspired to set up the old quilt frame and start my newest masterpiece. Thank you so much!
Great instructions, just about to do my 1st hand quilting, so glad I found your video before I started. Doesn't feel so daunting now I've seen your video. Thank you ❤
Simply stunning, Sandie! Incredibly informative and what fantastic tips you have given us along the way as well - loving your sense of humour too ☺So looking forward to seeing more!!
I've never made a quilt, always had a hard time finding a teacher that doesn't use a machine. I have a machine but it just doesn't work anymore. I'm clueless. So, since I hand sew maybe I can make a quilt! Material is what I need, I must find a way to get material now! Thank you ma'am for teaching! You are most wanted! 🙏
Finding fabric will be easier than the actual quilting, but it is so much fun. Glad you find the video useful for your new quilt-making journey! Goood luck and happy stitching.
Sandie - Oh my! This is the best video on hand quilting I have seen! Watched mesmerized from start to finish. You covered so much and left nothing to chance. I have tried quilting in the hoop but couldn't master it. Bought everything, but couldn't do it! Now I only hand stitch straight line accents w/o a hoop on my domestic machine quilted quilts. You have inspired me to try again! Great job and thanks so much!!! 😊
Thank you! Thank you! My grandmother taught me to hand quilt when I was young. Now, 60 years later, you have taught me some new tricks. I could tell by the look of your beautiful hands that I would be able to trust your skill. You made my day happy.
Thank you so much for teaching us this fabulous tutorial. I try to teach myself from books but this was treat. God bless you. Regards Vera from Northern Ireland ❤
a fantastic guide!!! i never saw somebody do hand quilting and i'm blown away. being interested in needlework i feel inspired to try it out. thank you for that!!

Thank you so much for this video and sharing your knowledge. This has been extremely helpful for me as I’ve been wanting to learn how to hand quilt but it’s almost a lost art. You do such beautiful work!
God Bless you!!! Thank you for posting this EXCELLENT!! tutorial for quilters who share the same sentiments about Hand quilting. I’d rather do fewer quilts so that they can be hand quilting.
I wish you were around when I first started quilting. There are so many questions that need to be answered, and you have the answers. I had given up quilting but, now I may try again thanks to you.
Thank you very much. I've learned a lot from your excellent lessons. I am a hand crafter but I have never tried quiling by now. This video was so inspiring, I may try it out on a little piece of fabric . ❤
What a lovely lady and great tutorial - the best one I've seen. I'm only half way through watching but I had to say what a fabulous teacher! I wish I'd found you earlier ❤. EDIT: Watched it all now, I finally understand the rocking technique - thank you for sharing your skills! 🥰
What a great video! As someone considering hand-quilting, you gave me a good perspective from which to decide. Thanks so much for your time and dedication to creating this informative tutorial. 🙌🏾👏🏾💕
What a wonderful tutorial. Have never watched anyone hand quilt. This was so interesting. But can't imagine how hard and time consuming it would be to do a large quilt.
Oh my goodness Sandie what an amazing video, thank you. I have been looking for this very thing and have come across many tips in inverted commas which went against the grain as an embroiderer and seemed to be a technique for speed. It was so nice to find someone from here in the UK and who went through the process from start to finish. You are an excellent teacher and I do appreciate giving us your experience on what you could use and the pros and cons. Thank you for taking the time to make this extensive video. I have now subscribed and will go back and watch the others.
Please show us a close up how you do a backstitch Ty. Your work is absolutely beautiful thank you so much for sharing. I have done some hands stitching myself if that's what you want to call it LOL no matter how hard I tried from the beginning to the end of my quilt I had a few uniform stitches to begin with and then a big one so forth and so on very ugly. Can you help us to do a uniform Stitch all the way through thank you you're a treasure❤❤❤
Try making your stitches a little bigger so you can see what you are doing. Getting even stitches is the thing to work on as they will automatically get smaller with practice.
I'm the same. I get frustrated with how random my stitches are. It's just practice and time but whilst you're learning it can be very disheartening. Just keep practicing and you'll get there. Thats what I tell myself, anyway 😊
Thank you so much for making this tutorial! It’s just wonderful and filled with so much information and guidance. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! 🌸🍀🌷🌻🪻🌺☘️
I love the details you gave. I have wanted to try hand quilting but never found a video that is as good as yours. Thank you.

Thanks so much. As a beginner quilter, this was so helpful.
Good luck. It might take a bit of practice!

Seen your quilting and so excited by your video. I am an in hand quilter but I think with watching you I will give a hoop a try. Thank you.
Good luck Susie. Just remember the tension in the hoop should be as if the cat has sat on it!
Clear and concise instruction, thank you!
Absolutely LOVE this lesson video. Thank you so much for a free pattern! All LOVE to you.
Happy to have been of use. Glad you enjoyed it!
Wonderful video. Your a great teacher. Hope to see more. Thank you❤
What a wonderful tutorial. Have never watched anyone hand quilt. This was so interesting. But can't imagine how hard and time consuming it would be to do a large quilt.
Thank you! From Baudette Minnesota USA ❤
This is a wonderful tutorial for hand quilting. Thank you for the excellent video.
I'm glad you found it useful
Thank you for this comprehensive lesson on hand quilting...I too believe hand quilting is invaluable.
