This was such a nostalgic video for me. I learned to hand quilt many moons ago. My parents are Mennonite and every Monday, my mother, grandmother and the kids would go to the church fellowship hall for quilting and lunch (and play time for the children before we were old enough for school). Some of the ladies enjoyed cutting and piecing the quilts. Others did the hand quilting. We used a large frame, open underneath, and the ladies sat around the frame and all quilted together. The quilt would be rolled in towards the center as they finished each side until it was done. The right hand was placed on top with the needle, and the left hand underneath to rock the needle back up. Amazingly, you could not tell the difference in the stitches of the ladies who sat around the frame. These ladies were seasoned hand quilters and all were able to stitch at the least - eight stitches per inch. That is quite hard to do as I learned when I tried my hand at it when I was older. One of my great aunts hand quilted for a living and her stitches were 12 to an inch!!
These quilts were sold at annual bazaars, and they were quite sought after. The money was raised for missions. The standards for piecing and quilting were high. My mother told me later after my grandmother passed, that at some point, my grandmother's eyesight was not great and her stitches grew inconsistent. But she loved going to sewing circle as they called it, and she wanted to contribute to the process. So, the wonderful ladies just let her keep quilting and someone would lovingly undo her stitches and redo them. She never knew that her stitching was becoming unacceptable for selling. I was so touched by that story.
Thanks for another special video. I think you chose the best quilting design although I like the Baptist Fan as well. Your sewing room is so inspiring and has great light.

Hello Kate, For years I’ve wanted to do patchwork and quilting, but every time I tried to find a reasonably good way to do it, It seemed too complicated! However, now that I have discovered your wonderful channel, I am re-inspired and more confident about starting. I have acquired a pretty good stash of fabrics over those years so I’m just about ready to get started. You are so natural and down to earth with your presentation, which is really encouraging for hesitant, would-be quilters like myself! 🙂 Agnes is a lucky little girl to have the lovely quilt made for her by her talented Granny/Grandma. Thank you for sharing your talent and helpful ways to do all the😮 lovely things you make.

I lived using different fabrics for each row.I hand quilted around each one.I still love that quilt.Time to give away that quilt to family t I enjoy. Please continue to encourage people to quilt.I just love watching you and will share with my friends your you tubes.I love your accent also as I am a southerner from Bessemer,Alabama with a southern accent. What a blessed day when Agnes gets her quilt from Geandma.

when I was an early teen in late 50s...the "pajama bag" that could be hung from the bedpost or used as a deco bed pillow was very popular....an idea could be that one of the sample hexie work can be used as a p. j. bag and the could be stuffed with a girl's pajamas each morning. I remember the bags were sometimes made/sold at dept stores with animal faces like a lion, puppy, or flower etc. be well!!❤

Kate, I feel so at home with you. I love to drop in to hear your chats with us. I’ve taught several children kindergarten through high school age how to English Paper Piece with large and small hexagons. We use our brown grocery bags as base paper and trace and hand cut everything. What a beautiful process! Little hands and fingers work so well and they get so good at every step. They even use the needle and thread. I’ve gotten the needle started in the fabric if they have trouble. The kids love the stack of fabric hexagons or squares or Dresden Plate pieces and play with them like puzzle pieces. Great sorting and matching skills learned. Thank you for sharing your love of EPP.

I found you just recently from watching Arne & Carlos . Where have I been? I'll tell you where. I have been feeling bad about how long I take making something, how different my process is from others and generally thinking "my way up the mountain" is somehow wrong. Well no more Kate, thanks to you. Just look at that beauty of a quilt hanging behind you that you have been lovingly working on for about three years. That right there is the beauty of crafting and I remember why I decided to polish up the skills my grandmother taught me. The peace that comes from the quiet and steady contemplation of working on something beautiful for home, family, and friends. Thank you again, Kate.

Another great video on my Sunday Evening. The whole day I just wait for the moment, where the number "1" says, that Kate sent a video. Today I'm most happy, because I'm sewing hexagon pieces together - the first 195 pieces for my great grandchild to come. It looks so easy, when you make the quilting - in a total different way, than I learned, when I startet 23 years ago. I love to follow your patchwork-videos, and I 've learned a lot of new ways to do things - but i enjoy totally, when you make video from your every day, you look so relaxed and calm and happy with your family. I agree with the other women in the comments, what the say, so maybe I'm becoming a member of the Limegreen Sofa society (hope it's spelled right). Take care each and everyone. Thanks to Kate for a wonderful evening - much love and bliss.

Agnes' quilt is so beautiful! It inspired me to make one much like it with Tula Pink fabrics, only smaller. I used every hexagon I could get out of the fabric I had, so I have an extra hexagon in a couple of the corners, and then I ended up doing a reverse applique of border fabric strips and mitering the corners of the strips together. I'm in the process of hand quilting a flower design using the seam lines to outline the flower and centers. That gave me the idea for the next hexagon quilt in Kaffe Fassett fabrics that I want to arrange into flower blocks by color. Thank you Kate for the inspiration!

Although I only found you recently, I have watched your entire journey in the making of this amazing quilt and cushions as well as all the videos I can find. I cannot tell you how much I enjoy all of them. I have sewn all of my adult life, but am new to quilting. I think I would like to try the hexagon also. I have done a lot of English Smocking and Embroidery in the past, so I know that I love hand sewing. In the back of my mind, I have wondered if I could do a small quilt with different blocks of Smocking. Not sure that is a good idea or not. I am 73 and still have so many things to try. Please keep the videos coming. I have another quilting friend hooked on watching you also. I am twice widowed, have two grown sons, a daughter in law and a granddaughter who is almost 25 who is a registered nurse studying to be a physician's assistant. I have had my 97 year old aunt with me for over a year, so don't always get to all the things I want to do. Take care, Kate and God bless you and your family... Gloria from NE Tennessee in USA..

I love your approach to sewing. I was very much the perfectionist in my 20's and 30's until one day coming out of a gold work class I noticed my shoulders were so tight my neck and back ached and I was getting a headache, all because I was so stressed over not being able to couch my gold perfectly. It suddenly dawned on me that I was no longer enjoying my stitching. At that moment I made a conscious decision not to worry anymore...to simply stitch for the pure enjoyment which is why I started in the first place. If one is entering a piece in a juried show, by all means go for perfection, but if its joy you're after, relax and enjoy the process, not the perfection. I learn from every teacher I meet. Some techniques I keep, others I don't . It's all about finding the ways that make me happier with my process. You make me very happy and I am still learning from you. Thank you for sharing, Kate.

I just happen to love how the geometric edges of the finished ‘squares’ look, so I will be doing a hand-stitched appliqué to a border, so I keep all of my hexies intact. How extra special it is to carry the quilting over onto the backs! I usually quilt only the top, and don’t even sandwich the back of the pillow, but I’ll try this way. Good idea!!

It is going to be so wonderful when finished! I love how easily you do the hand sewing. I have a piece I began about 30 years ago. One day, perhaps I’ll pick it back up. I think I was too focused on tiny stitches. Now my eyesight is 30 years older, too. Thank you for always being a calm and soothing presence on my Sunday afternoon, Kate. ❤

Hello Kate, it was so thrilling to watch you begin the quilting of your 3-years-in-the-making Epic quilt! Vicarious though it was, I truly felt the great satisfaction of arriving at that phase of the quilt making. Thank you for the lovely pleasure of watching you make Agnes's amazing keepsake (while I sit on the Lime Green sofa--I must dust off the crumbs!) and Congratulations!

The most wonderful thing about Agnes’s quilt is the timelessness of it. It is a design that is colourful enough for a young child but made of beautiful fabrics a grown up would have on their bed. The hexagons pattern is not a kiddy design but a child will love it still. The hand piecing and quilting give it a truly special meaning that will make this quilt full of love from her Grandma. I look forward to seeing the finished quilt.

❤ Such a beautiful quilt. What a treasure for your granddaughter. I am a quilter, but always do it by machine. Hand stitching has not been something I liked to do except for finishing the binding. Now after watching you do the English paper piecing, I’m temped to try it. Thank you for sharing your time with all of us.😊

I just finished a hexagon throw quilt top last year. It was on a basic 3 patterned fabric, made to look like flowers.
It’s STILL a quilt top as I just can’t decide how to quilt it. I keep thinking of taking it to a quilt shop to have them machine quilt it, but I would be so disappointed that all that handwork putting the hexagons together would be “ruined” by using a machine quilter.
I absolutely adore the watercolor feel of Agnes’ quilt in the background, as well as your explanations of how you pieces it and will be quilting the larger blanket.
Wish I had seen these videos BEFORE I started my hexagon quilt. Such a WEALTH of information ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

What a beautiful quilt for Agnes! That is truly a work of art. A perfect project to have to work on over the coming cold weather months. It would certainly take me many months to hand quilt it!! Priceless!!!

Thanks for your detailed finishing techniques. I was really stuck on how to finish off my hexagon epp project. Especially making it into a half hexagon on the zigzag edge. Now you have shown it, it makes so much sense and a really neat finish. My project is nearly 50 years old. I finally finished piecing the top during the first covid lockdown in 2020. It has been patiently waiting for me to decide how to finish it. Thanks to your inspiration, Kate, I can.😊

It was so nice to hear that it has taken you over 3 years to create this quilt. I have made a queen size quilt, hand sewn and quilted with large rhombus , creating beautiful stars. It took me 4 years of off and on stitching time. It is one I’m most proud of. I love the slow stitching process I also enjoy spending quiet time with you.

Kate , I just loved this video!! It reminded me of the wonderful feeling I always got when you first started the quilt. Deciding which small pieces were to go on a particular part of the quilt was always fun, and watching the “stream” develop , you’d place the piece and I would agree wholeheartedly where it belonged. Agnus is a very blessed little girl to have such a wonderful grandma who has taken such care building this magnificent artwork! I feel blessed to have witnessed your journey. Thank you so much 😂❤

You’re an angel. I am just at this point on a Liberty hexie pillow cover. I muddled through one before, edging it with half hexies, hand stitching the backing, diagonal quilting, and well, it came out nicely. BUT I really like how you are putting these together. Now as soon as I clear off the kitchen table…😂

In the 1980s I lived in Berkshire and had two elderly women as neighbours. They were quakers who once a week had other women over for communal stitching. They did huge amazing quilts and sold them for charity. I was only 18 and speechless with awe at the skill and accuracy and beauty. Since then, I always harboured the secret wish of hand stitching a small quilt just to see if I can do it. I love hand sewing and over the years have become quite good at it so what I needed was just a little nudge - which your video provided. Thank you so much for your detailed videos for beginners. So inspiring!

Not my first visit to The Last Homely House and for sure won't be the last! I have very much enjoyed watching Agnes's quilt develop, and each time I come back, I'm utterly charmed by your hexies (which inspires me to pick my own up again); they are like little drops of watercolour on fabric and so very beautiful. Love your humour Kate and your calming videos especially in these chaotic times, watching is good for the soul. All the best from London. 💛 P.s. Glorious Tradescantia! ⭐

Dear Kate, sitting here on the lime green sofa, in north of Stockholm (near Arlanda airport), I have been watching a lot of your friendly videos. And I'm so amazed over your incredible creative, and time consuming projects, that all are so beautiful and they all should have their own gallery ❤. I'm been a bit sad and down the past weeks, mostly because I was in three car accidents during the last 20 years. So I've been trying to find thing to do, and even even my body is willing to give a try. ❤Kate❤you inspired me to mend and old quilt. It's a magnet duvet, and it's my best thing to sleep under. There were big holes everywhere. Then I look at you, sewing by hand, and I started yesterday, handstiching away on my kitchen table. Thank you so much for your inspiration, you calming way. Tomorrow I will be finishing the quilt. And I admired your energy and wisdom. Thank you for being the guidning light, when I was "blue". You are a true sunshine. I send you and your family, cats, kids, hens the best of luck and love 😍 thanks again ❤carina

Hi - Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed this series - but particularly the quilting designs content. It's rare to see hand quilting ideas and testing, which ia a real shame - so thank you. I now have some ideas for my never ending 1" hexagon project :). More please? I also like the piecing, design and technique content - we can always learn something from each other - or just enjoy watching someone who shares a similar love.
