The Making of a Cot-size Traditional Welsh Quilt from Felted Flannel
I made this traditional cot-sized Welsh flannel quilt to raffle at the 2023 exhibition, "How Do You Do!", at Jen Jones' Welsh Quilt Centre in Lampeter, Wales (that raffle takes place soon after Dec 16th 2023 - see the second listing page of www.welshquilts.com/online-store/category/16-gift-ideas ).
I also put together a video demonstrating the design process and techniques used at each stage of its construction; that video was shown in the small 'cinema' at the Quilt Centre, but the exhibition has now closed so I've put it here on RUclips.
The quilt is made in the Welsh tradition, from felted flannel fabric and wool wadding, though as you will see in the video a novel, modern approach was ...

My Paisley Pageant Gallery at the Welsh Quilt Centre, Lampeter, in 2022
Просмотров 2338 месяцев назад
I've had several exhibitions at Jen Jones' Welsh Quilt Centre in Lampeter, Wales over the years, the most recent one being Paisley Pageant in 2022. All 25 quilts were cot-sized, many were traditional, and all continued to develop my fascination over the last decade or more with the design possibilities arising from a paisley motif used in a 1900s quilt in the collection of Jen Jones. This brief...

About 12-18" of thread was hand-quilted at a time. After each thread was used up, the quilt was taken out of the hoop, laid flat, and a photo taken of the progress - before starting the whole cycle again with a new piece of thread. The resultant 200-plus pictures were then 'stitched' together to form this time-lapse video. This is the fourth of a series of time-lapse videos show the making of o...

    I have been involved in all manner of quilting, classes, tutorials, for 45 years. Your tutorial is one of the most comprehensive tutorials (classes) I have ever seen. You didn’t miss a single thing about hand quilting (thinking of the little detail about working out that pesky thread knot with your fingernail). An excellent refresher for experienced hand quilters and an invaluable resource for new hand quilters, I hope this re-inspires both former hand quilters and those new to the art. Thank you for your generosity sharing your skills and knowledge!

    Is she stitching through the whole thing or just top layer of fabric? Or too two layers or what?

    • @SandieLush
      @SandieLush Месяц назад

      The stitching goes through all three layers. The whole point of quilting is to hold all the layers together. The fact it can be done in a way that adds visual interest and texture is a bonus!

    • @carolynschulze8801
      @carolynschulze8801 Месяц назад

      She is stitching (quilting) the top, batting and backing (three layers) all the way through to the backing, which is what is supposed to be done when hand quilting or machine quilting. She used a smaller piece for demonstration. Hand quilting being able to rock the needle between two thimbles after much practice is an art and simple adds more value to a quilt. Her stitches were small, even between each stitch and beautifully well done.

    • @SandieLush
      @SandieLush 2 месяца назад

      I folded one fabric edge over the other layers, (back over front or front over back) to prevent everything fraying while working on the quilt. This is really useful on a big quilt as it will take months of work before the quilting is finished.

    I had no idea that this was a thing. My grandmother didn't do it the right way, at least not that I saw. I'm pretty sure she was sewing. I'm considering quilting as another hobby so I enjoyed watching your class.

    • @SandieLush
      @SandieLush 2 месяца назад

      There is no right or wrong way to quilt, Michelle. Your grandmother was doing it her way and presumably didn't get sore fingers. I started by just sewing but I got really sore fingers as I never developed callouses, so, after a couple of years of struggling, I switched to what is considered the 'traditional' way of quilting. Whatever works for you is fine...just aim to get nice even stitches whatever way you can!

    Hi Sandie, it’s refreshing to see someone that loves to hand quilt (I love it too!). Can you tell me what happens with the watercolor pencil over time? It seems like the piece can never be washed. I am a bit confused as to why the watercolor pencil is best. Thank you for your wonderful video. Lisa from CA

    • @SandieLush
      @SandieLush 2 месяца назад

      Watercolour pencils can be washed out, but when using silk fabric (which I don't want to wash) I use a colour pencil that will blend in with the colour of my thread so the marks won't show after I've quilted it. The other benefits to them are that there is a huge range of colours to choose from, watercolour pencils are much cheaper than other markers and totally inert so won't damage the fabric in the long term. Quite often the marks just rub off over time anyway....the more expensive Caran D'Ache pencils are softer and rub off quicker than Derwent ones, which is something to bear in mind when marking a large quilt! Hope this helps!

    Thank you so much, I really enjoyed watching your stitching. I recently found my first quilt that I had hand stitched over 25 years ago, but never finished because I developed Carpal tunnel syndrome. This was before the internet and I didn't know anyone who quilted to show me how it should be done. I was using a running stitch like I've used with regular sewing or embroidery. Now that I've watched your video I will pick it up again and try to stitch using the two thimbles. I didn't pick up quilting again until last year and have been doing machine quilting which isn't as rewarding I imagine than hand quilting. Again I thank you for such a clear tutorial.
