- A Calgary senior is warning others after he was scammed out of $1,000 after buying what he thought was a new iPhone 15 Pro Max.
“I didn’t have any doubt that it was real,” Boyd told Global News.
The 80-year-old, whom Global News is not fully identifying due to safety and retribution concerns, said he bought the phone on May 1 on Facebook Marketplace. Boyd said the seller then showed up at his place with the phone in hand.
“It was all sealed,” the senior pointed out.
The seller even provided him with the “original” receipt showing the phone had been purchased down east back in October 2023. Boyd said he also checked the phone’s serial number and the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI). All checked out fine.
Boyd said the first sign of a problem was when he tried to update the phone with his own information and it wouldn’t update. It was only after he took it to a representative at a local Apple retailer, that he realized he had been duped.

It’s always the unaware people who get scammed… we need to raise more awareness for this kind of thing.
Their “specialist” is a clown.
From looking at that clone I think 99% of people would have fell for this one at first, you probably wouldn't notice until you get home and start setting it up etc...
I wouldn't fall for it because I refuse to use iOS devices. Headphone jack 4life
Always ask younger relatives on where you can safely buy authentic products or reputable services. Too many scammers nowadays coming into Canada.
Let me guess the sellers name Paneer or Panginder
If it's too good to be true...
FYI JUST to let you know the circle is a feature on iPhone it is touch feature to bring you back to Home Screen and use to take screen shots and get to control center Notification Centre fast and easy volume up or down and other uses
