Companies like Loblows have exclusive supplier contracts in exchange for paying a higher rate. If they find out a supplier provided grocery items to a competition, then supplier risks losing loblaws' business. To start a competitor means you have to build your own supply chain from scratch which is often expensive due to economics of scale.

Let's add it all up in case anyone doesn't know how we got here:
    - Mass importation of cheap labor from poor countries
    - Rampant offshoring / outsourcing of Canadian jobs
    - Bloated and wasteful government bureaucracy
    - Sky-high house/land prices and government policies/tax structures designed to keep them high
    - Government-funded and tax-incentivized Canadian corporate monopolies/oligopolies
    - Extremely high taxes at all levels on formerly "middle-income" earners
The financial pain that Canadians are feeling right now was an inevitable outcome. Government and corporate policies have been trending towards this for decades it's just now reaching a breaking point. The real solutions to these issues are generally extremely politically unpopular, that's why governments are just chipping away at the edges of a problem that requires structural change.

I do not use food banks because I'd rather be hungry than do dishes, even washing a butter knife is often too much to get me to make PB&J, I wait until I can't wait any longer, because I would rather be hungry than do dishes.
Everything food banks have requires making, then washing, dishes.
I eat one meal a day, lunch, sometimes I eat supper, if I've clean utensils plates/bowls/pot or pan.
This is because I cannot afford to pay someone to wash my dishes and because I can only afford one fast food trip a day. For the record, $9.04 for a 12" sub, split over two days for lunch is affordable. The $2.75 can of soup for supper, is not affordable, and it does not sate the hunger that is ever present. The $1.95 PB&J is affordable, if bread is on sale.
I'd go on, but really, what I want to say is, Conservatives are evil for "inspiring" slavery by any other name and Canada needs a national living or basic income.
    It needs it yesterday.
Edit: whoever reported this has skin thinner than an atom.
