Feeling fast and working off a draft to learn that speed is actually hugely beneficial. But technique and efficiency will always be huge limiting factors in swimming & have to be worked every session.
Look at how James Gibson coaches some of the World’s best. Drills in every session is a must. Too many triathletes just get better at swimming slower paces.
    Efficiency - Speed - Volume
No point in volume if you can’t swim efficiently.
Hope it’s a successful year Lionel!!

Oh hey, I swam at least that many kms...this week. Totally agree on swimming with others, more volume, feel fast (been using fins for drills and I don't hate them anymore!), add intensity every swim and sadly we rarely have a coach on deck, but we've been taking vid of each other to see what we're doing wrong and RIGHT with our form. I PRd my 100 a couple of weeks ago by 8 seconds. BOOM! It's working, LS...way to beat Sam the other day in the race! God bless, Megan 🙏

My 2 cents: for swimming one needs upper body strength. Most great swimmers spend lots of time in the gym training at max strength. Endurance swimming will keep the growth down. A great stroke is one where the muscle strength can be translated well into forward motion. When people have the same vo2max but swim different times, it's often strength (which translates in a specific feel for water).

It would be a great vid if Lionel would share what technique changes he's made from where he was to where he is now. Doesn't do much for the average swimmer to just throw volume at it in the hopes of becoming elite.

Him telling us what changes he made to his technique won't mean much, That's why the one point is "coach on deck' so someone that knows what to look for can tell you what you're doing and what to do differently. Even you knowing what to do can't really make the change yourself cause you can't really feel what you're currently doing wrong.

I definitely agree in all. Maybe you missed the technique part . But I like when swim workouts got a mix of intensity, technique, recovery.
I don’t like, excuse me, stupid workouts I had from AI coach, swim 1000 m in z2 . We can leave that for OW . In the pool it’s like Lionel’s coach says and nothing else. (Got three adult children who all competed in swimming and one of them in triathlon). Swimming is not like running and bicycling. I use to say that it has more in common to play one music instrument than running.

So nice to see you swimming fast after swimming with you in Dundas/Hamilton where you were... uh... slower...?!!! You were eating my wake at the time, I'd definitely be eating yours right now! Keep up the great work.
BTW - I got a LOT faster by doing all-out sprints in cold water (5-12C) 3-4 times per week, no wetsuit, short distances. No idea if this could help you, but I'm testing this with other swimmers right now. We'll see results this summer during race season. Looking forward to your next races!

Would be great to hear what tips Lionel would have for the average "untalented" age grouper - having a coach on deck and swimming with people isn't that accessible to a lot of us and just saying "volume + intensity + feel fast" isn't that specific or helpful either! If the purpose of these videos are to entertain then keep at it but if the purpose is to actually help people then specifics, specifics, specifics would be much more helpful! Thank you!

I may not be the best swim coach, but i am a swimmer with some experience with that style of training. having a high base speed all the time and being efficient is important to keep the movement pattern. And there is no better test of efficiency of technique than a long practice, but you ( Lionel) seem to have enough cardiovascular strain in your training alreddy. I think you would be better of with less milage, if that means higher base speed throughout the practice. Maybe bring that up with your coach and or get an secound opinion if i made sense.

That non talented person should get a proper coach. Why swim hard if you cannot even swim slow?? How about someone that can work with you looking at your whole system/ coordination instead of battling the water km after km. I do not understand this choice of training. Luckily it will be changed soon, since change in approach is the only constant factor. Sorry but next to the fact that I am a huge fan of LS I also have the opinion he trains far from optimal.

I think Feel fast is extremely valuable advice. There is to much content about technique on RUclips, and people believe that mastering technique will make you better swimmer, but it’s not the perfect technique that drives speed, it’s feeling the water, finding the most efficient way to move through it. In my opinion you need to learn your body to feel flow of the water around you and to start to dance in the right rythm.
