    Another tip that I got from another RUclipsr was to put a conditioning cap on after the leave-in but before the styler. Leaving the cap on for 10-15 minutes allows your body heat to open your hair shaft to allow the leave-in to penetrate into the hair before you add the styler. It works for me.

      @lqj After you apply gel (especially one with a firm hold like this eco styler) your curls get hard and a little crunchy. Breaking the cast is scrunching the oil into your curls to make them soft but still defined.

  • @mlank641
    @mlank641 7 лет назад +70

    Mud washes are a game changer for me. In fact, I consider it both a wash and a deep conditioner. As far as leave ins, I no longer use if. I go straight to a Gel like kinky curly curling custard and then go back seal each section with almond Oil. This may sound completely against what other Naturals do, but this is what has worked for me for the last 6 years. The reason I think mud washes work is because the ph level is higher and that allows the cuticles to lift in the hair and moisture or water is able to get in the strands. I can feel and see my hair taking in the Moisture. It is hanging lower and not sticking up in the air and the curl definition is at its peak. I use Terressential hair mud wash in lemon scent. Before I use the mud wash I use a shampoo to get rid of the build up. The mud wash will not get rid of build up alone. That is why a shampoo has to be used. I use argan oil organixs because for some reason it helps my hair receive in more moisture. Once the Gel cast is broken I have really curly shiny and soft hair that needs very little moisture throughout the week because once the moisture is in low porosity hair it retains it for a while. I'm not saying this method works for everyone but for me it has been a game changer. The final thing is this, the more i used the mud wash, the more I noticed more curl definition and shine and softness even in those areas I have little to no curl definition.

    ABSOLUTELY TRUE about shampooing... For the first time in 2 years yesterday I used shampoo. I kept wondering why my wash n' go's would never come out right. Well, I shampooed my hair yesterday and used 1 leave-in conditioner (usually I use 2), my hairfinity oil and eco styler gel, and the result was my first ever successful wash n' go. I stumbled upon this video, which confirmed why my wash n' go came out so beautiful. Before my curls looked uneven, although my hair was cut even at the salon professionally. My hair had major shrinkage on one side while the other looked stringy, weighed down, and dried out, making wash n' go's for me impossible. I now realize that I had major buildup going on from the constant co-washing of my low porosity hair. So with that said, I am glad to have incorporated shampoo back into my wash routine. Thanks for the research and wealth of natural hair knowledge. 😘

    Once, long before I was even thinking about embarking on my natural hair journey and I would give my hair a break from the creamy crack, I went to a hairdresser. She thought it a good idea to give my hair a protein treatment instead of an oil treatment. I didn't know yet that I have low porosity hair and that my hair was sensitive to protein. OMG, my hair turned out "hard", stiff, I tell you. She could hardly blow dry it in a style. That was a very big lesson I learned about my hair. I do give my hair a protein treatment every once in a while but I make sure to give it a good deep conditioning, too. In fact, I deep condition on a weekly basis. Warm water is one of my hair's best friends.

    So, I have low porosity hair (my hair floats on top during the water test). But it takes color easily and products don't sit on top (anymore). Using hot/warm water changed my life, though, and my coils look better when leave-ins are applied on dripping wet hair. I also swear by products with glycerin, honey, avocado anything (oil or butter) and aloe Vera. Liquid products don't work as well as creams, for me, but Idon't pile on creams or my hair will never dry and ,will stay with white residue! I wash twice a week because, yes, I get product build-up. I use shampoo once and a co-wash (Shescentit only) or DevaCare No-Poo for the mid-week wash. I deep condition twice a week. Hair milk is too light for me. Perhaps my hair is normalizing? It was all kinds of high when I first went natural, but now that I'm almost at the 7 month mark, it takes moisture so much better, especially water!!!!!!

Because it was always dry, it would knot constantly and every day if have to be spending half an hour to try and brush out the matted hair. (All pretty bad for just type 2 hair...) Now, although my hair is a lot shorter, I don't even need to brush it.

    I use rose water and water with light oils of my choice as a leave in. Sometimes I switch the rose water for aloe vera because its less expensive. but the rose water makes my hair so soft and it smells really good.
    my hair loves it. I keep my hair in two strnd twists because I am a Bgirl. Im spritzing my hair with this in the A.M. and after I practice. I found that pushing the product into my hair works really well because of the heat from my hands. so ill spritz a section and then squeeze that section until i feel the hair get really soft.
    At night I spritz my scalp and hair with water, tea tree oil which is the same spritz I use on my face to help with my breakouts which has solved all my break out problems and has really helped my scalp.
    Every since I found out I was low porosity My hair has been thankful. I also clarify with clay once a month and with shampoo every week. but now that I spritz instead of directly apply oils.... I only shampoo every 2 weeks. But thats cuz I wear my hair in twist and I have been able to keep them for 2 weeks now that im learning better methods.
    Im currently trying to find a good styling product for myself.

    You cracked me up about the hair milk. I really like using hair milk under my gel, and I've had friends laugh at me for doing it. I pretty much just ignore them because it works for me. Leave in was a newer thing for me, and I started using it from watching YT videos. I used to us hair milk all the time with and without gel. My hair is softer, shiner, and more fluffy with hair milk than with leave in. I like As I Am moisture milk, Mielle organics moisturising hair milk, Garnier Anti humidity smoothing milk, Camille rose curl love moisture milk, Carol's daughter original hair milk, and if your okay with shea moisture (cuz well, you know) coconut and hybiscus curl and style milk. I have alot of others that I like, but this list would be even way longer. lol

    Well...you just solved the mystery for me. I too am low porosity. I always wash my hair with shampoo and warm water. I also discovered the warm water on accident when I refilled my water bottle with warm water and noticed that for once I wasn't drowning in water. Lol. The water stayed in my hair instead of me becoming drenched. I was using carol's daughters hair milk at one point which I loved. I have it in my stash though. I'm using obia naturals now as a leave in and really like it. I will try some of the other tips.

    Today I washed my hair and conditioned it with this low-protein low-porosity conditioner I bought on clearance. I had no idea what the porosity of my hair was until I noticed how incredibly well my hair reacted to that conditioner! My hair really ate it up. The label even said it was for "moisture resistant curly hair." I'm so happy I found it. Then I started scrolling through curly hair videos and landed on this one. What are the odds!

    I've used Just for Me Hair Milk before. Not a fan of the scent but if it's going to help us LoPo girls, then I'm on it. I totally can relate to being lazy since I've been natural. This is my second time. The first time around I got heat damaged from straightening during an annual length check and had to BC again. That first year I used to wear a new protective style every week. Now I just rock buns or curly ponytails. It was easier when my hair was shorted but I need to do better. My hair should be at least 18" already. Thanks so much for the video. Often I just do what everyone else is doing. Now knowing my hair type, I have to be careful about which trends I follow.

    Hair Mary: I used to use Paul Mitchell's 'The Conditioner' but it seemed to stop working. I remembered my mother using a detangler on my hair when I was little that worked like MAGIC. Now I use Paul Mitchell's 'The Detangler'. In shower, I shampoo, detangle+sunflower oil, then bathe. I rinse out most but not all just before leaving the shower (all warm water). My fine, low porosity hair loves it. I thought I was alone with Mr. Mitchell. I also wash more often during the week (3-4 times) because of build up.
    Your words here are true and help to make since of my natural hair after experimenting with ALL the other Natural Hair suggestions. When I tried other methods, my hair wouldn't grow because it was dry and would break. Now I am right back to where I started. Thank you. Subscribed!

    now just because a person is low porosity does not mean they don’t need protein. Your hair is made up of proteins. But she is exactly right when she said a protein in a LEAVE IN conditioner may be a bad thing. I find that my hair is harder to manipulate and not as soft when to much protein is added. Still continue to use protein in deep conditioners because you eventually rinse that product out. I’m gonna have to give this hair milk a try. Sounds like a great tip. but protein is the reason my hair no longer breaks off like it once did. I can retain more length now. At the end of the day you just have to know YOUR. hair

    Girl, you hit so many great points and gave great tips. Thank you so much! I did use a hair milk over 10 yrs and didn't even know I was on to something. I saw that when I rinsed my hair with apple cider it made my curls pop and my hair soft actually and then I would heat my hair mask then rinse it out then shampoo with glycerin/ humectant and then I would warm my elongated product on my hair for about 15 min with my hair in a ponytail to stretch it more then rinse and put a moisturizer. This was working until I added conditioner. So I will go back to milks. Thanks again girl. You're awesome and I subbed

    I Have low low low low low porosity hair - Yep ! It's that bad. I could wash my hair in warm water for over half an hour, and the majority of my hair still looks and acts dry though its' wet. I could count on one hand the amount of times my hair felt and looked moisturized. but for the life of me I couldn't think of what I did. then I watched the video by Embrace Natural Beauty and remembered. one of the tips she mentioned - is the action of squeezing warm water into the hair itself and doing it in small sections.

    I haven't tried hair milk as a leave-in. I swear by As I Am leave in conditioner. I warm water in a plastic container in the microwave. Then, I put the conditioner in the warm water while I finish the rest of my wash day routine. Especially if I put my deep conditioner on in the shower and rinse it out in the sink. That warm leave-in absorbs into the hair leaving it sooo soft.

    I'm curious as to how many low po's out there loves them some aloe? Before I even knew what a porosity was I found that my hair loved both glycerin, and aloe. I just recently read that aloe can be a lopo's frenenemy. Amber try either the as I am or mielle hair milks. What's helped me the most with moisture retention is eliminating all water insoluble silicones and using the LCO instead of the LOC

    Be careful with these changes to your routine because your hair didn't get waist length because you were doing the WRONG things. Go slow. So many times we see youtubers reach great lengths and then start experimenting and next thing you know they're having to start over.

    • @FinallyAmber
      @FinallyAmber  7 лет назад +160

      Thanks. And I agree, but length doesn't always mean health.. or even optimal health. While my subscribers can SEE my hair. It's only for a few minutes in an edited video. And you can't FEEL it. The reason I make checks and balances with my hair when I feel like it's lacking something.. in this case, lack of moisture. So while I wouldn't completely change what I do... I know when my hair needs certain things.

    I have LPorosity and warm water washing with shampoo and then rinsing the deep conditioner with cool water gives me amazing curl definition. I steam while deep conditioning, that has changed my hair game for the better. Umm I only use water based leave in now because omg that's butter in my hair... like water bottle leave in conditioners... then add a butter to seal it in bc it's thick but lightweight on the strands...so far so good!

    Is there really a big difference between leave-ins, hair milks and moisturizers? You can get each one of these in varying thicknesses from watery to super thick. I think it's more the companies trying to make us think we need one of all three. This is why we see so many ladies layering 25 products to get a simple wash and go.

    • @1GoldenBreeze
      @1GoldenBreeze 7 лет назад +68

      Yes there is a lot of difference. Using both a hair milk and a leave-in is absolutely not necessary. Which one you use depends on your hair, but it will consistently love one over the other and absorb one better than the other. We certainly don't need to use many layers of products. Using a leave-in, or hair milk under the right gel should be enough. If we just learn what works for our hair the products the companies put out won't affect our regimes too much.

      Najee Basheer it's because hair milk is thin enough to penetrate the hair shaft; as other leave in conditioners r too thick for low porosity hair and some have protein , which if you've got low porosity hair. You really don't too much of that

    You used the exact same leave-in/gel combo as me except I always put Vatika Coconut oil after leave-in/before gel! Based on what you described, it sounds like my sister's hair which is course but looser than my curl. But she can't just used Paul Mitchell (real nor Generic) and conditioner to get a banging wash and go! She needs an actual heave moisturizer like As I Am of SheaMoisture (both too heavy for me, so I dilute with alittle oil).Anyway. like you, I'm tryna go back to my 2007 routine/products that had me thriving. I swear by HENNA treatments for strengthening and growth! Used to do them every 3-4 months. Suave moisture was my go to for a quick inexpensive curly girl lite (I used shampoo as needed). Elasta QP Mango Butter was my go to moisture for a bun and lastly... IC Fantacia, but they changed up on Me, or my hair don't like Fannie no more!!! 😔

    I have recently discovered that I have low porosity (more like non-porosity!!!) hair, and addressing that issue has made my curls come alive! It definitely is a defining feature for my hair, more than hair types. Using products for my hair type wasn't helping me at all! I don't really use the Curly Girl method any longer because it just did not work with my low porosity hair. I've added back in hot water, hair dryers, curling irons, sulphates, etc to help out my very resistant hair. There are many factors that can influence your hair, and you need to know which ones are most relevant for you. There is no "one size fits all" holy grail IMO.
