I have just started the video when you mentioned the free voice course. So I have to comment. I joined the free course less than a month ago and since then, I haven't felt the tension in my neck like i used to. As time goes by, I feel my support engaging in new ways and it's more and more automatic. My voice doesn't hurt when i sing in the higher parts of my range like it used to sometimes. I feel no neck tension. Zero. No strain. I recommend the course to EVERYONE. It's free! And it changed my life! Literally! Now I'm going back to the video :)
Jeff buckley is maintaining the shape of his vocal tract (same space for all vowels, or at least trying to maintain that as much as possible, that way its essier to control and not let the throat get tense and close) freddy isnt doing that that much, this is why there is a huge difference in the Queen albums and when he does it live
Pro singer for 8 years here and this droopy dog tip alone is a game-changer. Such a fun and easy way to personify relaxing all the neck and mouth muscles
@@lisasal9250 oops commented that while watching the intro. anyway i said that because beginners should know that trying to copy a pro singer wont help them progress
This video hit me right at the event horizon of my progress. I've been discovering my mix and able to get much higher notes from below without feeling the switch over to head voice and with little to no strain. What you teach here freakin unlocked the whole thing. Before it wasn't consistent. Now it is. I walked back from getting coffee this morning, belting out Jeff Buckley with an accuracy and ease I have not known. Literally singing in the streets. I missed the awesome discount on your 365 program and we're 9 days into the month, but I'm seriously considering signing up anyway. As a voice acting coach and voice actor, having this level of control over my voice has been transformative. And it's helping me help others. Thank you so much, Chris!
Guys, the free course is absolutely worth it. I saw those three videos 2 years ago, and it would have been impossible for me to improve if not for them.
I started singing by analysing the three main vowels "Ee Ah Oo". These vowels somehow formed the three main mouth embouchement shapes when we sing within our vocal range : Oo - oval, Ee - rectangle or "Ah" tall box shape. I think these shapes somehow helps us to improve our own singing voice. Thanks for sharing how you can improve your singing further by looking at your facial expressions or mouth embouchement vowel shapes to give the distinct singing voice sounds.
I've seen Freddie Mercury and Queen (of course ... sorry) 7 or 8 times in the 70s and 80s. Every time it was not only his singing was unbelievable, he ran a marathon on stage from left to right and back and rinse and repeat ... without showing any sign of exhaustion. They did that for 3+ hours. It was a sports show. :-)) Beside the music of course ... so, hit us "singers" with the Gods ... give it to us.:-)
Yes! People don’t acknowledge Freddie running on stages and up stairs and dancing through all Queen’s concerts!! Most people don’t know Freddie was a natural born athlete. Had great footwork in his boxing days in high school. Missing Freddie GOAT ❤️
your coaching is so helpful and fun to work with. It just makes sense to what I have done both "right" and "wrong" naturally over the years as an untrained vocalist
But you need to remember that Jeff Buckley was an absolute juggernaut. You can make a legitimate case that he's the singing GOAT, despite most people having no clue who he is.
Buckley is best - I was obsessed with him when I first heard him, I used to listen to the album on repeat and dream about him. One of the best things that happened in my life was who I met when I would busk some of his songs on the high street, if you know Buckley you are my kinda person ! ❤
Thanks so much for this video. Neck/throat tension while ascending through my Passaggio has always been the thing holding me back. The droopy dog technique really helped me get into a relaxed starting point and find my pitch and placement without tensing at all. Keeping that feeling and THEN trying to make it sound better with modulation etc. was really eye opening for me. I can tell right away that incorporating this into my practice will be a major boost to my progress.
This video really really helped me understand some things about posture and keeping my upper chest engagement out of it. Thank you so much for posting this 🙏
I had to watch this when I saw the x over Freddy. Great bait dude. I didn’t watch the whole thing, but what I did watch was pretty good. Nothing worse than seeing somebody with a great sounding voice grimace when they sing an “e”. Keep it up!
This is exactly why I like Chris, bc I've been googling tips for singing bc I can hit a note, but I'm now venturing out into getting more tones. Specifically grungier, gritting tones. But everything always says like don't use ur jaw so much, and I'm like ok but how bc naturally I'm going to be using my jaw and face to shape my words bc that's just a part of how we speak, but then chris goes and puts it into a context that makes perfect sense and instantly clicks with me. Don't use ur jaw? Naw droopy dog that mf. Thank you Chris
Thank you so much for this video. I’ve been working on not involving my face and neck too much when it comes to vocal support and forming vowels. Droopy the dog solves this perfectly and is so easy to remember bc it’s fun :) best way to learn
After 4 years I have to say thank you Chris, for the huge difference this channel makes and in my singing process! Learning with these videos is like I clicked, watched and succeeded in terms of comprehensiveness and practicability, also you seem like a really chilled and funny dude in general🤘💪
I was trying to learn You Know My Name by Chris Cornell so I watched a couple of his live performances. I was amazed at how little he opens his mouth for such an intense song!
Chris i love your expressivity, you put power in your voice even when you speak, i think it's indirectly communicate your own acceptence and love with and of your voice and i think that it's really encouraging and helpful for others like me, to have a model/teacher that not simply show how we need to use our voice for singing but how we can use it just generally. Singing is an expressive and melodic type of speaking, and we need to be as expressive as melodic, like you show to us in small instance of your videos very clearly, anyways i just wanted to tell my gratefulness for your work.
You are so great. Your explanations are great, the implementation works very well and I am very, very grateful for your videos. Thank you and keep up the good work. Have a great day. ❤❤❤❤
this is something i noticed as a kid seeing video of Roy Orbison record "Not Alone Anymore" hitting these bombastic choruses while barely moving his mouth.
Layne Staley was really good at this technique too. He’d be nailing those high b flats for long durations and barely making any facial expressions. Pure awesome!
Nice Chris. I've been digging on the subject for a while. It's nice to analyze ventriloquists and how they can get a full voice without even moving the mouth.
Great video! Subscribed. I spent decades trying to sound like freddy or axle, and sounded like crap. I was a baratone at highest. I took singing lessons, and my teacher, who taught me to relax, was like, you're a tenor. Unfortunately I keep reverting back to that tensioned signing, and loosing it. Droopy dog is a good one! A perfect instant method to relax. Thanks for that!
Most important lesson ever. BTW, I've been learning to sing alone and left aside the shame of singing outloud to achieve high register (letting the body as relaxas possible ), and the way I succeeded is by singing 2 hours a day when I was driving my car to go to work in the morning and coming back home at the end of the day. The more you try and and the less efforts you have to put into it to reach high notes. IMPORTANT : not involving your body and muscles that much doesn't mean you can sing without being in good shape, you have to.. And don't smoke ever. I won't lie talking about the fact that learning to sing when you live in an appartment (flat) knowing you can't shout out 80 dB like Freddy Mercury because of the neighbours) make things harder. So earn money , buy a house, and sing happily until you die . Have a nice day everybody.
This video gave me new food for thought and things to pay attention to. I wonder what I'll discover. Bohemian rhapsody is, since I've heard it for the first time when I was a kid, still one of my favorite songs of all time!! This is a tough comparison. Freddy is placing things forward, which you can absolutely do without tension if you know how. When you do it, the sound is huge. The sheer volume difference between what Freddy is doing and what Jeff is doing is vastly different. If they were both on stage singing together and you shut the mics off, I guarantee you’d hear Freddy. So if you want that big sound like Freddy has, then you need to learn to sing through that forward placement. Even his “oo” has a mouth shape of “ah” in it. Bright, forward, and in the mask. It’s powerful. The key to that style is real diaphragmatic support. You can literally see his ribs move as he inhales. Your method will absolutely work, but it’s not the same and not what Freddy is doing.

2:00 I've seen this relaxedness in an old video involving Rob Halford, Judas Priest. He was performing Dreamer Deceiver. Very young. But he sang with such effortlessness it might have been ventriloquism, how little his mouth moved. But the sharpness and power and squeakyness to his sound was masterful.

I have a question. I wasn't able to keep my voice stable until I stopped drinking (partying) and smoking. I often found that I could reach higher registers when I was hungover. But my voice wasn't stable and would sometimes easily crack and not be clear in some places. But when I stopped drinking a smoking I was able to keep it stable. I also need to kind of take care of my sleep. Otherwise it gets quite dry. So now, finally my question. Both Buckley and Freddy partied and smoked. How were they able to do that with out being affected by it on their voice.. I'm really curious for your answer?
Please, Chris, bring more Adam Lambert! He is even better as times goes by. There are many amazing performances around there. My suggestion? Velvet era.
I really don't like Jeff Buckley's vowels very much. Freddie Mercury's vowels are a lot better. I'm not talking about the energy that they are using to sing but the actual sound of the vowels. Freddy's pure vowels are music to my ears.

How were they able to do that with out being affected by it on their voice.. I'm really curious for your answer?
Please, Chris, bring more Adam Lambert! He is even better as times goes by. There are many amazing performances around there. My suggestion? Velvet era.
I fkin LOVE buckley
Really helpful, thank you!
Great video!
Chris, you look and move your face like Hank Moody AHAHAHAH I always wanted to tell you. Awesome video btw, thanks for it.
:D you held that droopy dog for respectably long without cracking. Great guidance though and subscribed right away.
3:46 the aggressive "NO!!!" made me laugh way too hard
Very helpful 🙏🥰
bro you the 🐐
Another important thing about Buckley's singing is that he's always smiling when he sings
This droopy dog impression has me dead
I really don't like Jeff Buckley's vowels very much. Freddie Mercury's vowels are a lot better. I'm not talking about the energy that they are using to sing but the actual sound of the vowels. Freddy's pure vowels are music to my ears.
