Saw him play this last night at the Astor Theatre. He told a story that back in 1986 he was invited to play mime to this song on The Dick Clark Show. (They were on the beach in the water for some reason) After the filming he was told by the producer that there might be a problem with the line, "I'd rather clean all the bathrooms in Grand Central Station with my tongue." But they said it would be fine for the broadcast. Sure enough when the broadcast went to air, they play the line "I'd rather clean all the bathroom in Grand Central Station with my BLEEP." Which is way worse.
Always loved Weird Al. Mom bought me a ticket to see him for my 12th birthday. During this song he walked out into the audience, made his way up to his and then put the mike right up into my moms face and sang "again and again and again and again". one of the coolest moments of my youth
What's more impressive is the extreme lengths your father went through to insure that Al singled out your mom and let her know how he truly felt! But seriously, that is the definition of awesome! 😂😂
I went to a concert of his and during one of his love songs he came out into the audience and sang inches away from the my friend's face. (Al's nose is sooo much BIGGER than I ever realized) (it's all good though, b/c it's perfect for him)
Since the 70's, as Brad said, have loved his stuff for years. LOL He was definitely biggest in the 80's but very much still solid, funny, and always relevant.
My wife and I had the DJ play this song during our wedding reception in 1990....about half way through the song, our families are on the dance floor with strange and confused looks on their faces, until they realized that we were dragging them involuntarily into the joke. Still happily married going on 33 years later! Thank you, Weird Al!
I love how he bends the microphone, then throws it away, proving he doesn't even need the microphone, and yet in the very next scene the mic is right back where it should be. It's silly details like that that really make me love the stuff he puts out.

this song came out at the most perfect time.... I was serving in the Navy and on the other side of the world when my then girlfriend broke up with me in the worst possible way. So in response to her "Dear John" letter, I copied the lyrics to this song and sent it to her! You're a life saver, Al, and my hero all these years!
Think of it this way: You dodged a bullet. Nay... You dodged a nuclear strike! Other men have been dropped in a chipper-shredder: you got a blister on your little finger. Maybe got a blister on your thumb... Of course, it doesn't feel good when it happens. But tis better to have loved and lost, than to love and lose and pay alimony and child support through a payroll deduction plan.
This song gave me laughs when I was younger. Years later it helped me get through my divorce with my sanity intact. Now it's good for laughs once again as I reminisce. Ah, good times... good times.

Here's the thing..... Al could sing anything he wants, literally. His voice is beautiful. (His level of intelligence is even more beautiful.) Thank goodness he chose to use his voice as he does.........because he can make me nearly pee myself with laughter, which is difficult. Thank you Al, for bringing an aching grin to my face.
Is that actually her? I only recently learned this was written after an actual break-up. I wonder who it is, and whether she appreciates the fame of being in the video?
My goodness, when he sings in that low register, the lyrics just sort of fade into the background and I start to feel things I would never have thought I'd feel for Mr. Weird.
I saw him do this song in concert last month at the Minnesota State Fair; one of the highlights was when he went out into the audience and hanged out with the concertgoers down near the stage. 1:22 was terrific when he put salt on the plate of broken glass.
I love the slow escalation of this song. At first it sounds like a serious song, then he drops a random line here and there like "wait, what?" and then he gets more and more random before going all in at the peak of the song. Brilliant satire!
They are subtly doing the Greek Chorus thing where they react to or act out the lyrics that Al is singing. They have that 50s era backup line serious deliberate choreography, but what they are doing is subtly wild.
Weird Al's (failed) love songs might be his very best, IMHO. I just chuckle remembering the words. This one in particular has been stuck in my mind for a week or so.
Diane Tilford In fact, the picture he tears up is the girl who the song was about. She dumped him about a week or so before he wrote the song, and this is how he let his feelings out about her.
Feel bad for the fact that this was an inspiration from his own life for the song. But the fact that the song helped me with getting out of bad relationships years after I fell in love with the song, then turning the clock back to listen to it should make my childhood hero feel good! AL deserves more recognition for his contributions to the music industry, and his inspiration to kids like me who never felt like they fit in. On purpose or not, he helped me through childhood, and I still love screaming his lyrics back to the windshield at him!
9th grade speech class required every student to do a lip sync, with costumes and props. This song was my runner up choice. I ended up going with "Like a Surgeon." About half the class did Weird Al songs
This song helped me get over my last relationship. Weird Al music always made me happy as a kid, and I honestly didn't know this one existed until a few years ago. So of course his music helped me become happy again.
This is a friendship that will last a lifetime. I was introduced to the music of Weird Al at the age of 17. I'll be 40 in a couple of months and I always come back to it. So many happy memories. Thanks for the music Al, long may it continue.
Believe it or not, I sang the Karaoke version of this at my wife and my wedding dinner. The bride's father held the phone with the music and lyrics as I sang it. Oddly enough, as misplaced as that song was, people still found it to be funny. We've been married for 7 years.
I was having a week of Angst remembering my ex-husband who found a bleached-blonde nail painter who made more money than me after 26 years. And my late and well-loved-by-all second husband, who died last year during the first month of Covid 2020. This video yankovic'ed me right out of my self-pity. I am profoundly grateful.
I don't know why that one random polka got the "weird Al don't need no auto tune" meme attached to it. THIS does a much better job at showing that weird Al don't need no auto tune!
I think one of the many great things about this song is a quality that appears in a lot of Mr. Yankovic's music; he is a MASTER of understatement. "I guess I might seem kinda bitter...." XD
I still remember doing this song in a school lip sync competition. It was fantastic. Especially when I pulled out long strings of fake intestines with a fork ... nobody saw that coming. LOL
I remember when I was about 5 or 6 years old when I first watched this music video and since I didn't know how most things worked at that age, I was freaking out cause I actually thought he ripped out his heart.
This is the ultimate middle finger! My ex broke up with me 3 months ago and this describes exactly how I feel towards her now. Love it! Keep doing what you're doing weird al! You my hero
there are 2 impressive things that could happen relating to this song. 1, a person sending this after having their heart broken by another person or 2, a person doing every single thing al listed in this song.
It's not just humorous ... it is also a fantastic song in its own right. I mean, even if I spoke no English at all and had no clue what the song was about, I would love it anyway, just for the music alone!
When I heard this in the car with my dad for the first time, we couldn’t stop laughing! My favorite part is the heart bit followed by the dramatic gasp at the end!😂
My all time favorite "Weird Al" song. When my second ex-wife left me, this song reminds me of how much I anget and hurt she caused that I would rather do any of the bizarre things he mentions than have anything to do with her ever again.
She used Al's song "White and Nerdy" as her ring tone for me. I told her That's fine, I couldn't find the group Guns and Roses' song "Your Crazy" for her ringtone.
The first time I saw Weird Al perform this, was when he opened for the Monkees in the 80s. He came out into the audience while singing and was giving out white scarves to folks ala Elvis. I was sold from that moment on. Al is the very best.
I read that he wrote this after his then girlfriend broke up with him. Never break the heart of a world class satirist.

'Cause I'd rather spend eternity

I guess I might seem kinda bitter
You got me feeling down in the dumps
'Cause I'm stranded all alone in
the gas station of love
And I have to use the self-service pumps
Oh, so honey, let me help
you with that suitcase
You ain't gonna break my heart in two
'Cause I'd rather get a hundred
thousand paper cuts on my face
Than spend one more minute with you
I'd rather rip out my intestines
with a fork than watch you
going out with other men
I'd rather slam my fingers in a door
Again and again and again
and again and again
Oh, can't you see what
I'm tryin' to say, Darlin’
I'd rather have my blood
sucked out by leeches
Shove an icepick under a toenail or two
I’d rather clean all the bathrooms in Grand Central Station with my tongue
Than spend one more minute with you

huge pile of thumbtacks
Or stick my nostrils
together with crazy glue
I'd rather dive into a swimming pool filled with double-edged razor blades
Than spend one more minute with you
I'd rather rip my heart right out

and then throw it on the floor
and stomp on it 'till I die

Aaron_GKV wrong video bud your thinking of doing it creep you out
The ultimate break-up song.
Weird Al Yankovic. He's more than my favorite music artist..............he's a hero. A personal hero of mine.
Same here.
Dak Lamerbusch A genius?!? More like the Mel Brooks of music.
+Jonny Boy Yes, a genius. Who else comes up with these ideas then executes them so well?

@@Succubus2Angel In the video he actually rips up a picture of his ex. That makes me wonder if there really was a malt shop they used to go to.
@@nbuehster Probably. I bet he didn't burn it down though.
@@Succubus2Angel Well that escalated quickly.
Believe it or not, I sang the Karaoke version of this at my wife and my wedding dinner. The bride's father held the phone with the music and lyrics as I sang it. Oddly enough, as misplaced as that song was, people still found it to be funny. We've been married for 7 years.
Never mind his parodies, this song is truly one of Weird Al's masterworks!
The backup dancers did a great job.
+spartacus778 I know! Haha. They look like every other 1950's backup dancer.
+spartacus778 those are his bandmates. Steve Jay, Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz and Jim West
+spartacus778 When they sang "Leeches" I nearly died!
+Xerock

Left one looks like Benedict Cumberbatch
I was having a week of Angst remembering my ex-husband who found a bleached-blonde nail painter who made more money than me after 26 years. And my late and well-loved-by-all second husband, who died last year during the first month of Covid 2020. This video yankovic'ed me right out of my self-pity. I am profoundly grateful.
I don't know why that one random polka got the "weird Al don't need no auto tune" meme attached to it. THIS does a much better job at showing that weird Al don't need no auto tune!
Trivia tidbit: The woman in the picture Al tears up is the actual woman he wrote the song for. Hey, her loss, Suzanne's gain :)
At least that prince found the happy ending in this fairytale!
Unlike me...
1:45 He lets the flexi-mic go limp when saying he has to "use the self-service pump" at the "gas station of love". Haha. Clever guy.
I think it’s a metaphor
"And I burned down the malt shoppe where we used to go..."
XD
Just because it reminds me of you.

@@PugnaciousProductions I mean before his ex broke up with him.
@@nbuehster I was making a joke.
I think one of the many great things about this song is a quality that appears in a lot of Mr. Yankovic's music; he is a MASTER of understatement. "I guess I might seem kinda bitter...." XD
"Why'd I have to go and get myself decaptitated? This really is a major inconvenience, oh man, I really hate it"
"Haven't been the same since my head and I were separated. No, No, No."
"They want to control me, they want to destroy me.. They're tryin' to kill me.. It _kind of_ upsets me.."
This is one of my all time favorite songs. Not just favorite Weird Al songs. But, favorite songs, period. This is a frickin' masterpiece.
I still remember doing this song in a school lip sync competition. It was fantastic. Especially when I pulled out long strings of fake intestines with a fork ... nobody saw that coming. LOL
This is absolutely the greatest breakup song of all time. Just proves the talent of the man
I remember when I was about 5 or 6 years old when I first watched this music video and since I didn't know how most things worked at that age, I was freaking out cause I actually thought he ripped out his heart.
Lol
It was the ripping the heart out that got you; not the door slamming part???!!! O_O
@@BadWebDiver lmao. I was an odd child 😂😂
This is the ultimate middle finger! My ex broke up with me 3 months ago and this describes exactly how I feel towards her now. Love it! Keep doing what you're doing weird al! You my hero
No one else can emote quite like Al. Love the back-up singers, too.
OmG I love this man !! Can't wait to see him in concert this Summer !!
I saw him last year in a concert and it was great. Would love to see him in another concert again.
I sang this on karaoke tonight for the first time. Got a standing ovation! That doesn't happen all that often!
Got over 250 k-songs in my book...26 by Weird Al, second only to some guy named Garth something...
Always loved this song. Ever since I was a child. Great memories.
I smiled today for the first time because of his performance tonight on Jimmy !! Thank you, AL!!
Love the pantomime of the backup singers following along with the lyrics. It's the little things that make Weird Al the genius he is.
there are 2 impressive things that could happen relating to this song.
1, a person sending this after having their heart broken by another person
or 2, a person doing every single thing al listed in this song.
It's not just humorous ... it is also a fantastic song in its own right. I mean, even if I spoke no English at all and had no clue what the song was about, I would love it anyway, just for the music alone!
So many times in my life, Weird Al saved my psyche. Thank you, Al. I've been listening since the days of Doctor Demento.
This is the absolute best breakup songs that is, or ever shall be!
He really is a great vocalist!
Just bloody brilliant, total genius!
Happy Valentine's Day.
Jokes on you. I am still single.
That is so... I don’t even know what to say...

Genius. I use to jam his music alot as a kid and he's still putn out music. Talk about finding ur calling lol.
Seeing Weird Al play this live at Ridgefield playhouse in Connecticut was awesome!
His voice is AMAZING in this video. And every other one. And the humour. Everything.
When I heard this in the car with my dad for the first time, we couldn’t stop laughing! My favorite part is the heart bit followed by the dramatic gasp at the end!😂
Ahh! The Classics! They never go out of style.
This has been for so many years my all time favorite Weird Al original.
Me, too. My other favorite is Nature Trail to Hell.
Truly a masterpiece.
I’m stuck in a Weird Al-loop for hours now and i don’t regret a thing!
This is but one of Al's masterpieces. True genius on full display. The video is nice, too.
Al is, quite simply, a GENIUS.
Can we all agree on that, at least?
Serial genius.
Weird Al: underrated choreographer
One of his best.
My all time favorite "Weird Al" song. When my second ex-wife left me, this song reminds me of how much I anget and hurt she caused that I would rather do any of the bizarre things he mentions than have anything to do with her ever again.
Here I am listening to this song almost 40 years after it came out, cheering me up on a bad day, your the man Weird Al!
This is such a doo-wop parody that the backup singers are singing "doo-wop" during the verses. That Weird Al is so clever!
Weird Al never gets old with age, his parodies are not only funny, but always brings a great laugh when you’re blue
I just sent this to my ex, wether she listens to it or not, it makes me feel better
good on ya m8
Cinema Jacket Productions I am tempted to do the same
I would definitely do the same.
She used Al's song "White and Nerdy" as her ring tone for me. I told her That's fine, I couldn't find the group Guns and Roses' song "Your Crazy" for her ringtone.
Cinema Jacket Productions you're lying... she was the one who sent it to you...
The first time I saw Weird Al perform this, was when he opened for the Monkees in the 80s. He came out into the audience while singing and was giving out white scarves to folks ala Elvis. I was sold from that moment on. Al is the very best.
One of his best!
