  • This is a comparison for different tubes in the preamp section. For positions V3, V4, and V6, the tubes are Sovtek LPS, Sovtek LPS, and JJ respectively.
    Here is the preamp tube assignments:
    V6=Rhythm
    V1,V2,V5 = Lead (V1 is input)
    V3= FX
    V4= PI
    Note these differences are very subtle, but there are differences. Also, be aware power tubes will have a greater contribution to the sound.
    Gear used:
    Peavey 6505+
    Mesa Boogie Rectifier Cab
    ISP Decimator
    Boss NS-2
    Rockbox Boiling Point
    DBX 231 EQ
    ESP EC 1000
    Recording
    Shure SM 57
    Apogee ONE
    Logic
    Imac

    For the high gain that you're playing, I liked the EH in all positions tone. The tone was tighter and there was less oscillation due to the heavy distortion. Thanks for the demo!

  • @staytrue0407
    @staytrue0407  12 лет назад +1

    No but for recording, you may want these subtle differences to add to your guitar tone. Like I said, these differences are very subtle. One test I didn't do (and I currently use this now) is putting the Sovtek LPS in the V1 spot. Sounds really good. People can argue all day about how difference tubes don't matter, but I have a very sensitive ear when it comes to dialing guitar tones. I think playing around with different tubes can really take your amp to the next level.

  • @PippPriss
    @PippPriss 11 лет назад +1

    I find, that the difference is so meaningless, that it rather makes sense to put a EQ into the effect loop and adjust it to likly positions and settings. Now imagine a drumkit bashing, a humming thick bass and a lead singer that screams, growls or also sings the shit out of himself. Bet nobody can make out the different valve.
    Nothing worth changing, unless it has to be anyway.
    Thank you SO much for this video. It saved me lots of money.

  • @staytrue0407
    @staytrue0407  12 лет назад

    @xoPyromaniacxo To change them, make sure the amp is off, cooled down, and unplugged. Simply pull the tube out, but notice how they come out of the socket. Replace the tube the same way it came out. Power tubes have a notch on the center pin that has to be lined up. Depending on your amp, you should re-bias the amp when you replace power tubes. Make sure you minimize how much of your skin touches the tubes to protect the tubes from your skin oil. I wore nitrile gloves each time I changed tubes.

    IMHO, the JJs all-around sound the most like a 5150 / 6505 should. The EHs do indeed sound good, as do the Penta Labs. But, when I think of a true "5150 / 6505" sound, I think "darkish", and having less "brittle cut" than other amps. I swapped a Tungsol into V1 and couldn't get it out of there fast enough (despite many recommendation for the Tung). Great shootout, BTW!

    @staytrue0407 I run my post between 1-3 while practicing which is most of the time since I don't play out much lately. I set my pregain to 6-7 and all EQ at 6-6-6. Pres. is 9 and Res. is 8. I bought the amp used on Crglst as a 2009 model. Still has factory tubes. 3- JJ83s12AX7, 1 EH12AX7, and 1 sovtec in phase spot V4. I learned today after being on the phone with Peavey (who are a great group) that V1 is the 2nd from right and V6 is the furthest to right! He says V1 is most critical for tone.

  • @staytrue0407
    @staytrue0407  11 лет назад +1

    The differences are trivial. You could get the same results by moving the mic placement. This was more to satisfy my curiosity; but like you said, the differences are small (which I expected). I used a Rockbox Boiling Point for a boost.

  • @staytrue0407
    @staytrue0407  12 лет назад

    @TheRyanmluke Depends, I run the gain between 2 o clock and maxed out. The drive is between 7 and 9 o clock which depends on the sound I'm shooting for. The tone sits between 10 and 2 o clock. I don't use the bass boost and the drive selector is in the middle.

    I've switched out tubes in amps before.
    Different circuit designs respond to switching up tubes differently.
    My Triple Rectifier had harder mids, less fizz, and more gain when I replaced the stock Mesa 12ax7 with all high-gain JJ 12ax7.
    Mullards are amazing for cleans in every amp I've tried... except Diezel. I didn't notice ANY difference when switching 12ax7 in VH4.

    You have a couple options: run out of the preamp out and run impulses, buy something like a palmer speaker simulator, or buy a hotplate and run the line out of the hotplate into impulses. With the first option, you will not be silent recording. With the last two, you will be.

We went to the music stores real cite and noticed they were selling the 6505 plus for the same price everyones selling them for and open box units marked down to 1000.

    @staytrue0407 I am gonna order a complete set of (6)JJCC83s12AX7 and (4) JJ6L6's for powertubes. My amp sounds nothing like your clean and your lead is more brutal. I only had this beast for 4 months now and it sounds good but I want your tone and gain sound for sure, so I am gonna order from Tube depot now. Peavey says that the bias dial can be turned all the way hot and it won't hurt anything as it was made not to. I multimetered at 51 at hottest setting possible and 55 is factory setting.

    I forgot to ask what the settings were on the 6505+ for the demo? Since I gotta turn my pregain to like 7 to get a nice saturated crunch then I think it may be time to change tubes. Peavey told me today on the phone to change the powertubes first but your video shows the preamp tube making a huge difference in sound.

    Hey, just wondering why you would use a noise suppressor in conjunction with the ISP? Why not just throw the decimator in the loop? Do you get something you otherwise wouldn't when you put it front of the amp? I've heard of this being done, but I've always just thrown my decimator in the loop and ended it there.
    Great tone by the way.

    I'd say you would have better results putting it in the V1 spot. You could try a Jan GE 5751 in the V1 and the 12AT7 in V6.I own 2 Jan GE 5751's for my Framus, but I haven't tried them in my Peavey. For my clean, I don't let the pre go above 1 and I crank the post.

    @Ikillpeopleforfree The EH tubes have the same gain as the JJs. The EH tubes are more of a well balanced tube and are less noisy. Positions V1 and V2 contribute to the input and lead channel. V3 is the FX loop. V5 is the other tube which contributes to the lead channel. I honestly don't remember the settings. They change all the time. I'm curious why they would tell you to change your power tubes. How old is the amp? What do you run your post at?

    I have a question. I've played peavey 6505+ with mesa boogie cabinet just like yours. I'm using epiphone les paul standard guitar with standard pick up. The channel is set to the high gain one and the gain/distortion knob is set to 4 or 5 o'clock, i got pretty thick distortion when play some metal riff. But why i find it's very hard to get the pinch harmonic? The harmonic sound is not clear and had a very short sustain. I can get much clearer harmonic and much longer sustain when using my zoom

  • @MarkStephensJr

    thanks for doing this man.. I have a Peavy Vypyr 60 tube and didn't know if there would be any difference in sound between the 6505 setting on it and the actual 6505... I don't even know if I could make my amp sound better or not either...nobody has a vid up about it.. So i'm thinking i'll get the 6505 plus if I can sell my Vypyr off and try to pick me up a Mesa Cab... I'm trying to get a mix between Killswitch Engage's sound and All That Remains but i'm stumped on how to get there...

    Hmm...I have to disagree with you. If you listen carefully between the JJ in V1 around 2:25 and the Tung-Sol @ around 3:38 you can clearly hear that the Tung-Sol sounds much warmer and bigger. And that's just changing the input tube. The way tubes cascade into each other, if he also changed the other gain stages the tone would improve exponentially. The better your core tone, (no outboard gain boxes and EQ's) the better off you'll be. But that's just my opinion. We all know tone is subjective.

    I've been thinking of messing with my 6505+ head. When I call Peavey they are nice on the phone but won't really talk about tubes or biasing except that -55 is factory and going over is bad. So I gotta go hunting on youtube then for info. So my question is what about Electro-Harmonix 12AX7EH Preamp Tubes compared to JJ? My factory preamps are a mix of JJ and Sovtecks. I heard JJ are noisy and lower gain and muddier to 12AX7EH. How does the V 1-3 postions make a difference for tube type anyway?

Would be much appreciated if you could reply :) thank you!

    I have this head, I love my tone, I mean idk how to explain it I dont really see people do this with their eq so idk if it doesn't sound good to other people? but I have my bass 4 and mid at 6 and my high at 3 it sounds killer, it has a nice warm bottom end to it. idk try it let me know what you think

    Hey man! Great video! I was just wondering what settings you run on both of your channels on the 6505+?
