    You’ve always been an inspiration to me and that was a great hunt and a great ram also I’m 14 and just last month I killed my ram, first year putting in for the tag too in area 3 in Wyoming was a tough hunt but got it done after walking 20 miles through the rough county very blessed to be able to kill a ram with being how young I am!!

    Just coming across this video now. Man I sat with my jaw on the floor for 10 minutes after seeing Tank's fate. Can't believe the story narrative played out like that. Guy wrenching man. You two are awesome hunters and I have massive respect for both of you. Thanks for all the nuggetd of knowledge you've passed on through Elk Talk Randy. Much respect and thanks!

    I think what is cool about this series is that Randy shares all the ups and downs of the hunt. Been there, done that, and what is depicted is what it's like. The hardship is what makes the experience that much more meaningful when things go right. I did my own self guided hunting on public land in Montana in the early to mid 90s. I find I strange how proud guided hunters are of their trophy. They are really just shooters.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  8 лет назад +5

      +TUCOtheratt - Given how "average" I am, there are plenty of "downs" to go with the few "ups." Thanks for watching.

      My dad grew up a subsistence hunter here in Oregon and he always said that guided hunts or hunting on a fenced in property full of game is not hunting, it's paying to shoot a deer.

    I think this is your best video to date. It took me 33 years to draw...but I did in 2012. I also wanted 200". I put in countless days and hours in the Breaks. I passed on several 190-195" rams(and that's not easy) and shot a 200" gross - 198 5/8" net. Trophy hunters are a rare breed. LOVE the Breaks.

    For all of you that believe you can never get a tag try other regions of Montana. The genetics of the Breaks is world class, but I drew first time (yes still lucky) a tag in the Spanish Peaks south of Bozeman and the hunt was epic. There is an unlimited tag in the Absaroka / Bear tooth range that is on a quota system. Maybe some of the toughest hunting on earth up there and its griz country, but there are good sheep taken there every year for those who are in shape and and brave. RIP Tank and doom to the loser that shot him.

    My Dad was director of the Wyoming state crime lab for years. Obviously they don't have the volume of human murders of other states but they DO have a LOT of poaching. The Game and Fish dept would ask the lab to take poaching cases which he did thousands of times. Not only is it a state violation but if you attempt to transport it past state lines it becomes a violation of Federal law. He said often the wardens would watch a poacher(with the animal already dead) and wait for him to head back home then just when they'd cross over into Nebraska/South Dakota often...they'd grab him, haul him to federal court in Cheyenne and they'd be in a WHOLE heap of trouble. He actually wrote a published paper regarding the identification of popular hunting bullets using only traces of jacket left behind. Pretty interesting...if you're in to that much detail!

    • @nmelkhunter1
      @nmelkhunter1 5 лет назад

      I often wished I would have pursued a career as a game warden in part so I could piece together evidence using detail as you described. In my opinion the part about the bullets is very interesting. Did your Dad every work with the US Marshalls to apprehend poachers?

    Hello Randy, I have watched many of your video's and think this one is my favorite. I used to live in Idaho and got to hunt Bighorn Rams twice but never found got one. I did get to talk with a sheep guide that had found two dead rams that had been estimated to have been dead over 50 years and they both scored over 180 B & C points. The Idaho Fish and Game had inspected and plugged the skulls then returned them to the finder... Also I have to disagree with Matt Smith on here that the Missouri River Breaks is ugly. There is a special beauty to this type of terrain. Personally I love high dessert .. I'm really glad your friend got the super ram Flare. Wow, what a ram.

    This is one of my favorite hunts you have recently posted. Vaughn seems like quite an individual. I'm so glad he killed such a stud ram. Tough break on "Tank"... Hopefully some justice comes about regarding that poacher. Also, in some states, once an animals death is determined to have been of natural causes, the finder is awarded the head... Was this the case for the other dead head you guys stumbled across..?? That'd be amazing..!!

      It's a safety requirement in most states, and is why accidental shootings have dropped so dramatically. Blaze orange was chosen because many game animals have trouble picking up orange/red colors.

    Just out of curiosity and for my own field judging purposes/education, what did Vaughn's ram score? It's not likely I'll ever hunt sheep. I just love watching them and field judging animals.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  8 лет назад

      Vaughn did not have it officially scored. In MT, when you shoot a ram you have to check it with Fish Wildlife & Parks. They do a measurement, though it is not an official score. They came up with 184. Thanks for watching.

    Much respect to that guy for believing this a once in a lifetime hunt. How are ram far as table fare goes??

    His ram looked more beautiful and bigger than tank. Perfect curl and a half and comes out to nice points.
    Very beautiful ram.
    Would love to have it.
    Are tags easier to draw for disabled people for that ram tag?

      All hunters in Montana are in the same drawing pool.

    I'm new to all this so please don't shake your head at my question lol but can you keep dead ram skulls you find or is it against the law? Kindda like a deer shed. I know you didn't shoot them. and not saying to mount them but those you found would be cool to have.

    That was a huge Ram but they also find two huge Rams dead . Looks like I will only see this on video if it took this man over 40 plus years to draw a tag there is no way I would ever get one .

      I've applied 27 times and still have not drawn. The odds are low, for sure.

    Hey Randy, I just drew a BigHorn Tag in New Mexico. Unit 45 Pecos area. Since I found out all I’ve been doing is watching videos and reading up on rams. Doing my first scouting trip this weekend. Any tips or pointers? First time doing a BigHorn hunt and it’s a once in a lifetime tag. Thanks.

      Wow, congrats. I wish I could proclaim myself a sheep expert. I am not. I've only been on four sheep hunts in my life, none as the tag holder. Hope you have a great hunt.

      Randy Newberg, Hunter first year I’ve ever put in for a ram hunt too. Like hitting the lottery on the first try. I’ve hunted elk and deer all over New Mexico all my life. Deer in the same unit. My close friends have put in for a ram tag every year of their adult life. No luck. First time I did I get a tag. Gonna have to document this as much as I can.

      This week we find out the results for Montana moose, goat, and the harder-to-draw-than-anything big horn sheep. I am hoping that after 25 years, my number comes up. Thanks for watching.

      That is a big part of the hunt. When I think about how long hunting has been part of civilization, I suspect the camaraderie has been part of the pursuit since time began.

    All around great hunt & hunting,but that dang jam'n Remington or clone-what kind of rifle is that?

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  8 лет назад

      +eric rumpel - He was using a Remington 700, with some super hot hand loads. Too hot of handloads. Teach him :).

    • @nmelkhunter1
      @nmelkhunter1 8 лет назад

      I don't wish to come across as a know it all, but I have always believed that one does not need to have a max amount of powder to kill an animal. I have a Model 700 in 270 that I load with 53.5 grains (1.5 grains below max) of IMR 4350 that shoots 130 grain Accubonds at 2975 fps.This gun will shoot a 3/4" group at 100 yards from a bench. The accuracy at the max load is better but the bolt gets "sticky". Not something you want to have to deal with in the field. Ok, I'm done.......Sorry for the rant!

    you mentioned the "gamewarden" a few times, what exactly is that? and why do you have to call him about the throphys ?

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  7 лет назад

      In Montana you cannot keep the heads of rams that have died of natural causes. You have to call the game warden, the state law enforcement officer, who will come and retrieve them.
