CNC Machining a Brass Knob

- Making a brass knob for a gas fireplace. The original knob was lost.
The machine toolpaths are not very fast or efficient. This was a one-off piece, so it was better to just make the part using the code I had, rather than spend more time tweaking the code in order to save a few minutes of machine time.
If I were doing a production run, it would definitely be worth spending time to make the toolpath code more efficient.
Off camera, the knob was cross drilled and tapped to accept a set screw, which holds the knob onto the shaft.
the finish that first tool leaves is beautiful.
Yeah! All the other tools are jealous of it.
I love the fly cutter finishes
Nice and cautious. Good way to go when experimenting with new materials. Turned out nice
New guy on CNC machining at a conventional mill speed. That machine can do that in 1 minute.
Good work!!! We also have rich experience in sheet metal fab, we are a strong manufacturer in China, with high quality and competitive price.
You can make deeper and more aggressive cuts on brass. Saves time & money. But I get it, this is a demo and not production!
that fly cutter gave a good surface finish!
Have to admit my heart skipped a beat when I saw his hand near a live spindle. Goes against what I learned, but I loved this video.
Nice work!
ty!
Good work 👍🏻
It seems like more than half the process is missing from the video. Did you cut it out on a lathe? Did you drill the grub screw hole by hand? How did you re align it to do the bevel on the bottom side?
Surface finish from the superfly is like a mirror
Yeah, noticed that too, superfly is a cool tool
Am making a very similar part out of aluminum using a brother machine.
1/2" carbide end mill
9,000 rpm
110 inches per minute
0.200" depth per cut
0.800" total depth
run time is approx 28 seconds.
真是好療癒啊~~ So soothing...
good job
That suface finish makes me want to by a CNC....
how to programm it i have a step craft and estle cam
Hey Lee? This machine can make threads as well?
+Ljudevit Binder Yes it can :) I like to use thread mills. I'll film that in the next couple of weeks.
+Airlab Excellent,sounds very,very interesting
what are that yellow cutter made of?
Why not chamfer in one pass? Is this a desktop mill?
It's a Tormach PCNC 1100 so definitely capable of chamfering in one pass. This was my first attempt at cutting brass so I wanted to take it easy and get the best possible finish. Being a one-off part it wasn't necessary to reduce machining time like it would be on a production run.
+Airlab You'll find brass cuts like butter. Good job!
Dustin Walden cuts like butter but loves to grab into the tool.
good
What speed and feed would you guys recommend when carbide cutting brass? Can you use hss?
Price??
fantastic :))
What is that first tool?
Superfly?
Where do I get it?
Yeah it's a Tormach SuperFly fly cutter. You can buy it directly from Tormach. Also Little Machine Shop stock Tormachstuff , but I don't know if they stock that tool specifically.
Do you want to loose your fingers?
Tormach?
or you could by it on misumi for 1/10th of the price
I didn't know about that site, looks great though.
For me, it's usually more satisfying to make something than to buy it. The process itself is incredibly interesting, and an invaluable learning experience. Plus when you design something yourself you can get exactly what you want.
The slimest shady, you dont get the point of machining do ya?
.
who uses fly cutters anymore?
All the cool kids.
omg
... deine Finger im Arbeitsraum dieser Maschine sahen nicht so toll aus ..........., die haben dort wehrend der Bearbeitung nichts verloren ............ !!!
😕😕😕😕😕👎
