Adam Demuth owner of Demuth Tool & Design recently "stepped" into being self-employed, which is incredibly inspiring for anyone dreaming of starting a machining business!
With diverse machines like the Haas Mini Mill, Mori Seiki NVD1500 DCG, and Parker Majestic Surface Grinder, he has what he needs to get the job done!

Design Squared Unfortunately many companies just aren’t willing to spend the money or the time to invest in training and supporting people in building their skill set. My employer is paying machine operators the same rate they did in the early 80s. They complain about turnover and employee skill level, but can’t grasp that concept of getting what you pay for.
@@hammurambi if cheap labor gets the job done, cheap labor gets the job done. Management's duty is to the bottom line, not the subjective work satisfaction of employees or arbitrary quality metrics the client doesn't care about.

I personally know Adam and worked with him at one of our former employers and i can say he is very good at what he does. Always taking great pride in whatever he is doing and amazing at thinking outside the box.

As somebody operating out of ~120sqft this was such an inspiring mini-tour. I loved the Superb one when that came out, awesome to see how Adam has made that switch and is making it work.

Adam I'm a surgical instrument maker, we file everything just about, our file cleaning and sharpening methods are a little different. For cleaning we soften a brass chisel face with a torch and use it to file in the same direction of the teeth to pop out clogged material. To sharpen, we use a acid bath of electro polishing purposes, few seconds of a dip, helps to preserve it for a little while longer.
This man is where I hope to be, I have a lot of respect for him and I hope I can learn even half of what he knows during the time of my career.

Awesome setup, thank you for letting us share. When I was an apprentice in the UK in the 70s I was taught to use chalk when hand filing for a better finish. It worked really well and still do it to this day.
I have a DoAll DH612 and its also a steel tape drive with a non-roller bearing table. Not having backlash in the drive really is nice for this type of work.
190 sq ft.... I will never complain about my 500 sq ft again.

Good video John I really enjoyed it. Soapstone also works very well for keeping a file clean. What is soapstone? Back in the day it was used to write on steel, before the paint markers were around. It has a more slick quality to it than chalk. Just my personal preference I thought I would pass along.
Recalling the famous line from JAWS (movie): Adam, I think you're going to need a bigger shop!
Sort of reminds me of SMW progression: Started machining in a Tiny NYC apartment, Then to home basement, then to a barn, and ending up in a large commercial building. I guess that's problem comes with success.
I would end with "Best of Luck to you Adam", but I suspect you don't need luck to be successful, since you already got it together. Thank you for the enjoyable video!

they are very precise machines from Mori Seiki many factories in Europe use them DMG Mori

The NVD1500 is one of my dream machines! I’d love it with the updated mapps controller and the AWC, so nice!
I really enjoyed Adam's insights in the Supreme tour, he really knows his trade. I'm interested to know what power supply he has to his house! Does he have fire suppression on those machines since he runs oil?
He probably doesn't need more then 100 amps single for those machines with compressor.
I upgraded to 200 amp service when I started the shop. Currently I have two panels in the garage. One is 80 amps single phase for the grinder, lights, mini mill and air. There is a second 100 amp service which is just for the phase converter. The haas and mori don’t really draw much power but the air compressor is definitely running my power bill up.
@@adamthemachinist put a vfd on the compressor swap the motor for 3 phase . It stops that intial draw that dims the lights also gives you a bit of warning mid conversation lol
You see the GS2 on the first grinder? It can take single phase and output 3ph

Dang.....I'm a little more than a few years into the trade, but Adam seems like an awesome guy to apprentice under. I'm sure he's got tons of experience and tips to learn from. It's a shame I don't live in Ohio or I would probably just volunteer my time to work for him

I'm not sure why so many people are against file cards. I have one I use a lot with no file issues. I primarily use the nonmetal brush side.

I recommend selling Organs.
Sony used to have a division called magnescale, which was a direct competitor to heidenhain, using a magnetic scale rather than glass. I'm not sure if that's what was used in the DRO, but just an fyi. Magnescale was purchased by DMG Mori about 5 or 6 years ago and are the scales that are now used.

Dick grott just less spinning plates. I’m essentially doing the same job as when I was employed but with maybe 2-3 active projects at a time versus 5-10.
That Baby Mori is awesome.
The main reason right now for me to want to start my own business is because at work it's just not going anywhere. In 5 years ill be doing the same thing as i did today if i dont make the change. We dont even have a cam system because they send 20-30 guys to a 2 day training and expect them to do 5 axis after that. I've been learning some mastercam and fusion 360 at home but what difference does that make at work when they dont have the interest to invest? Give me 500k and ill even take down my current workplace with that.

Those are PCB drills with the 1/8” shank. Can get them down to 0.008” diameter.

Wow! I like your style! I hope you succeed with your plan's. I also hope you grab the business end of being an entrepreneur too. Being a business owner is never stress free, but I'm sure he's happier than he was working for a boss.
In most, if not all CNC machine shop videos I have seen. There are mostly Haas machines? Any advice whether the Hurco Machines are okay to purchase?
That's a great shop. If you ever get a chance to visit protolabs I highly recommend it

Hello, I own a tool & die and stamping company in California and I really want one of those variable drives on my grinders. Adam, can you possibly share how to go about it? Anyway, I love your videos keep them coming 😀
daniel rogers it’s a pretty easy install. You’ll need an enclosure box and an appropriate sized vfd. I chose automation direct but many companies make quality vfds. You simply run power into the vfd and then lines to the motor. A few minutes of programming and it’s ready. While your wiring I recommend but a 110v Oulet on the machine. It makes plugging in spin fixtures much easier.

He could use a cheap 4 axis stepper controller to make that grinder automatic with some steppers. I used one off of Amazon to turn a Grizzly Mini Mill into a CNC with one.

I learnt to chalk files when I started metalwork lessons at school when I was 11, over half a century ago. Amazed he didn't know about it, French chalk is the thing to use not blackboard chalk.

Such an interesting industry, but it looks to me the learning curve is so huge as to be depressing.

Just like anything else, start with the basics and build on it from there. When I went to school for machining, I thought the vertical mills were some kind of big drill press. Now I have a mill and a lathe in my garage and make a decent living running a small job shop.

Lol the gs2 is a very common VFD. I've installed quite a few of them. I think automationdirect sells that model

He used to work for a large machining company. There is another factory tour of that company. He knows many of his clients from working with them in the past.
