    I love the serenity prayer as well. But I also take comfort in a twist on the Dr. Seuss quote =d

    HI Liz.....you are a wonderful, God blessed and inspiring lady. I cried watching your movie, hugging your mom coffin, let go the money for food for your mom, the Dad that simply didn't care for the girls. I didn't remember how many times I cried, I now have two growing up girls. I'm blessed with in laws who looking after my girls, we both works day in day out supporting the kiddos, I pray that may God continue to bless kids with very little support from their own parents.

    Thank you, Liz Murray! I am a homeless college graduate, too. Class of Spring 2005. 🎓 I can not find any witnesses or evidence to show that anyone else homeless since you graduated did in fact enroll and attend any U.S. colleges and universities until I did the same more than a decade later. Thus, I can only conclude at the present time (May 2023) that you and I are the first to break through the barriers of entry, shattering the stereotypes. Now, millions of others are following our examples. Good job! 🙂

I graduated prior to the advent of social media, and scholarships for homeless students didn't exist for us. I am also a first-generation college graduate. We truly worked through hardships of our own to make it. Thank you! 🙂

    you are amazing and an inspiration, i come from an alcoholic family and i refuse to go the same way as them, as i never want my children to grow up like that i try my best to be motivated and set a good example, its not often i find people with this kind of back ground who have done so well , sometimes i wounder why they stay so stuck and i didnt, and the serenity pray is one i know well to from AA when my mother was sober , its very powerful and helpful in so many situations , i to still use it through the hard time, your movie really touched me , most of it i cried through and wished i could have been your mother to give you the loved you deserved and craved like any child .

    You are a very bright girl, it is like a person who has a talent that is untapped, but something that our society values. Many children are poor but not all have talent that is rewarded, however you I bet are behavioral and have problems with relationships. You don't play we'll with others and have difficulty with boyfriends coworkers and friends. Liz Murray you are lucky you are bright but you are damaged from your upbringing, don't underestimate this.

      You are an idiot, maybe her upbringing is what made her click. It wouldn´t happen if she was rich. there´s action and reaction. Would u have done it? it{s dreams and perseverance. Lot¨s of sacrifices!! what have you done with your life that gives you the power of judging her? U may think she´s got talent only, but that alone doesn´t get you anywhere if you don´t have discipline and perseverance. and what do you know of psychology? At least she is one and she knows more tan you do. If your words got weight, then why don´t you give us a lecture? You are a Smart ass without the Smart!

    and we will never know the potential of so many others unless we have consistent reliable accessible systemic support for everyone no matter they were lucky enough to be near a exceptional school and have early childhood influences such as her dad was and perhaps even her mother and her older sister. I hope she advocates for others who were not as fortunate. Choice theory without an understanding of menus is nearly useless rhetoric. "I did it so can you" is just a slogan without more effort on the part of those who made it to understand truly how and why they were ABLE to make better choices. Many fall into homelessness when they are older and no longer have the energy etc. of a teenager and many were abused in ways Liz cannot likely imagine having to endure.

    Liz, I think you are a beautiful soul and an amazing person. How nothing kept you from moving forward is amazing. But, at the same time I think about the other young people. What happens to the young people who come from situations like this that have learning disabilities or are just not as smart as you. What can we do for them? How can we save them from slipping away into the underworld of the streets. What about the ones that never break through that skin because they are not as gifted as you? I worry for them. I am amazed to see what you could accomplish and I don't want to down play that at all - but I do worry about the kids that arn't as gifted.

    I respect people's beliefs. Everyone has the right to have faith on anything they want. Too bad people with faith don't usually respect those who don't. Telling someone that god is responsible of their achievements, is the same as an atheist telling people God does not exist. You should probably start such statements with something like "my opinion is ...." . But then I'm no one to tell people what to do ... Just a thought ...

    I think its great how she worked so hard to get where she is but why do Americans think it is so Important to go to school/ Collage?? I left school at fifteen with nothing. I never did any exams at school but I have always worked and I run my own business. I never thought school was important and don't regret leaving at 15 without doing exams. I have still always done well for myself. I am 40 now.

    • @herzenverbrecher
      @herzenverbrecher 10 лет назад +2

      Seriously. Those of us who go to school waste all of our time and money. The problem is that we're slowly becoming a nation of idiots because we don't think that education is important and make it increasingly difficult to go to school. We no longer value intelligence.

    • @bestsmileMD
      @bestsmileMD 10 лет назад +9

      School is to provide guidance in the form of books and lessons that others before us have learnt. This is the meaning of wisdom. Learning to do business and earning lots of money is not the same as having an education. Education opens your mind and perspectives. For example when you learn to read, your world suddenly opens up to whatever you want to read. Studying medicine opens you up to a whole world of microbes and treatment etc that you never ever know of if you did not go to school. If you measure success only with $$$, yes, school is useless. BUT also look at the many movie stars who earns millions but yet UNABLE to manage their lives because they lack the education, training and wisdom from a formal education. Granted that not all schools can give that to their students but a major part of learning is on the shoulders of the student. Liz Murray is one example of wanting to learn. She may have done equally well later in life with business if she had not gone into education. $$$ yes, educated? No.

    +Cheshire Kitty well she wasn't born with an above-average innate intelligence, she worked hard... and the A's she used to get before going back to high school were because she read a lot of encyclopedia even though she didn't go to school!

    • @moriah1394
      @moriah1394 9 лет назад +5

      Shorouk al-ma i agree she, like most of us was not born with significantly different intelligence. Moreover, she also has emotional intelligence and even that I don't believe she was born with. However many work hard for absolutely nothing or for a life of hell. Suicide and addiction being the only way out. Many work hard as children without ever having a dad as Liz did who gave her a sense of learning when she was young and without the special school and staff available to Liz. Even Einstein attributed his going to mathematics and excelling at it to his uncles early involvement in his life...i am sure that nature of which we could learn from if we not only stopped assuming these thing begin before birth BUT ALSO what it is in our circumstances that create who we become...gonna take humility and will become a great responsibility to realize we are so very responsible for who others can become.

    • @ShoroukA
      @ShoroukA 9 лет назад +2

      Moriah S I totally agree but I also believe that you can choose not to let others influence us in a negative way but ofcourse it's not an easy thing to master and most people don't get that.
      and yes I agree that her father also gave her a sense of learning!

    • @moriah1394
      @moriah1394 9 лет назад +2

      Shorouk al-ma yes and i am just suggesting that our ability to choose is actually founded on prior experiences most of which we are not conscious of having experienced but if we identify those experiences and come to understand the mechanics of choice making then it can truly be taught; conditions and experiences can be created to facilitate the ability to choose...though yes change is always likely difficult as it usually requires more energy and courage than does staying with what we already know.

    • @ShoroukA
      @ShoroukA 9 лет назад

      Moriah S Yesss, I agree with you 100%

    • @nene7-o1v
      @nene7-o1v 8 лет назад +4

      Actually, intelligence is inherited. Her dad was smart. Drugs messed him up. She inherited that intelligence from her dad but the environment she was in was not conducive to allow her to be moulded into the "smart kid". Later in life, she motivated herself after she came out of that environment. It's a nature vs nurture situation.

    What if people treat u shit in school? Like those 2 kids that commited suicide? we mostly study to remember text not to learn to think in a different way. People need to heal them selves from there pain. Some times school is a prison for a child.

      @moriah1394 9 лет назад +2

      lovenlightman we can die of thirst reading about water...it is social EXPERIENCE and conditions that make information attractive/interesting or not and it is also social conditions that provide (or not) the ability to practice what we read and/or hear about and FEEL the results. Concepts do not change people, people do not change in isolation; we create one another through social context. IF PEOPLE COULD HEAL THEMSELVES we wouldn't need each other....people left alone, isolated commit suicide and yes if we don't strive to understand other then we leave them alone no matter in a room or school filled with people.

    • @lovenlightman
      @lovenlightman 9 лет назад

      people do not change in isolation?Well maybe u should try being alone for a couple of days and see if it has not effected you.

    • @moriah1394
      @moriah1394 9 лет назад

      lovenlightman I have and for far more than a couple of days. AND point taken. any conditions can have an effect on us and my point is that in isolation, while we may learn to use in a new way what we already have experienced and we can learn about being alone, we do not learn how to function socially better which is what most people here are looking to understand. this isn't an outdoor survivalist site. meditation can be helpful and again it is a vacation not an intensive way to learn ...even monks require a social support network.

    • @lovenlightman
      @lovenlightman 9 лет назад

      U seem like a wise person and a nice one. In isolation u have to be alone with your self and u have to comfront -Your self- Ur thoughts and bad feelings u have about yourself. This is why many people fear this so much. Some great people developed only when they where years alone Like Rabi shimon bar yochai and Habal shem tov. To realy develope u have to be in contact with other people and many times -By Being with people that hurt u- U learn how to become stronger and deal with them. In some point in order to realy heal yourself- U have to be alone -Lets say-send energy to ur body. A person who is always surrounded by friends- He cant realy look in side in my opnion. I understand ur point. But a person needs to learn to be alone-Some people have a boy friend or get married with a person they dont realy like-Just because they have not got the strength to be with them selves. When we r young and after -A lot of encounters we have with people change us to the better or to the worst .
