Watching this makes me really appreciate what Ceb said the other day about who he thought was the goat of dota2. He said for him it was puppey and his reasoning was "way back when i was a kid puppey was already puppey" - and you can't argue that. it's truly insane how he's always been in the top tier of the sport even after pretty much everyone we see in these documentaries has long retired. whole teams, orgs, and regions have risen and fallen but puppey is still puppey. I can't imagine the scene without him.
@Lycanthrope lmao, nobody said about Ceb being goat here, and definitely not Ceb calling himself that. Your hatred blinds you to the point you can't even read or understand English 😒
@Lycanthrope this comment was about puppy but have a nice day i guess
@Lycanthrope looks like he is the goat of living rent free in your head :D
@@trainerred113 mad hatred
@Lycanthrope You really want to question ceb when he single handedly won the game vs LGD when he played his axe? Like really? I get the hate for ceb sometimes, cuz he is an asshole, but calling him washed up when he clearly is one of the best in the role he plays is fucking insane levels of hate.
Yoo grubby I haven't finished the vid yet but you're currently my most favorite youtuber yet! You playing Dota 2 really revived the community and brought newer players to the scene. I really appreciate what you're doing for us. Love from the Philippines! ❤💙💛
Wow! Much appreciated, thank you!
@@FollowGrubby Wow I didn't think you'd actually reply for the 2nd time. :))

Fear and Dendi story will always hit me because how simple their life is and just gave everything they have to make their life better. Big respect for both of them! And glad they both deserve their Aegis in their career
And I think this goes for hyhy too. Valve picked the 3 best players to do a feature
young fear will always be feared for his gyro
Hyhy ❤❤
lmfao i swear , fcuking casuals man, just like how kids only know cr7 and messi when it comes to football@@MM-vs2et
Everytime I watch this I can't help myself but cry. Especially hyhy's story.
Passion is a funny thing. It puts you in a tight situation where you have to sacrifice some things to push through, but once you break through, you will then realize something in yourself you haven't realized before.
Some of us are too unfortunate for having their passion known, but cannot pursue them due to challenges in their lives (financial situations, family matters, unorthodox status quo, etc).
But I really, truly do hope that we can find this balance in our lives - a growth paired with your passion which is somewhat challenging the norm, and a comfort where you can relax once everything seems a little bit overwhelming.
I started Dota one week after I watched "Free to Play" on late 2017. Truly an amazing documentary about E-Sport players perspective
It's still hard to believe that the beginning of Dendi's career started because of something as tragic as losing a parent to cancer. Behind that carefree smile, he went through a lot and keeps getting back up.
Also let’s not forget war hitting Ukraine during these years. Dendi really is an inspiration.
@@andreslfr Dendi more or less repeats what he did when he lost his father, saying that the war makes him play more so he won't fall into depression.
Men control their emotions, we have a job to do, don't have time sitting around crying.
Grubby made me go back and play some dota 2. For the past year or so, I've been playing the game less and less. Especially since there were lesser tournaments and lesser hyped-up content (because of the pandemic). But this guy, seeing his genuine reaction to learning and loving the game made me remember why I loved the game. Especially, that he is someone my age made me think that you are never too old to play the game.
One of the best documentaries from before esports was more widely accepted, WC3, CS1.6/CSS, DotA 1, SC/SC2 did so much heavy lifting so that all the major esports could thrive today from the streaming platforms to the sponsors
It's true without the production behind Warcraft and the flexibility into how creativity from individual in developing ideas made really forwarded everything altogether. Everyone bring something to the table.
You forgot CS...
@@John__-ie3od I was tired when I wrote this but yes CS and any valve has been just as fundamental to the scene as Blizzard was in the early times
Quake?!?!?!
Hello?!
The founding four competitive games are Starcraft, Counter-Strike, WC3 and Quake.
These are the games that built the foundation all other games stand on today, if they want to be competitive.
Plenty of games CALL themselves competitive, but are not competitive at all, like LoL or COD, where both are based on the exact opposite of what the founding four was based on, equality, no one having more or less than others.
In both the aforementioned games, a person with 1000 hours played will have access to more game changing content than a player entering the first time.
The founding four however was about skill, everyone is equal at game start and all that matters is skill.
I hate that people call games like COD or LoL for competitive games just because they are played on a separate server system with everything unlocked (only accessibly for LCS players), the regular player is playing a game where the one that invests more time/money will have more options, and the favor always lies in the hand of those with more options.
Yeah, I ranted. I really dislike newer games trampling on the legacy of real competitive games by calling themselves competitive when they are not. It's disrespectful.
@@OriginalPuro imagine legitimately saying league is non competitive because you are advantaged if you own all champions LMAO bro by the time you get to LCS LEC you've got time to buy them 3 times
league's prob less impressive and deep than the 4 mentioned but it of course is as fair as dota, most of what can be done is achieved through draft
DENDI THE FACE OF DOTA2 and no one will erase that!
I have watched Free to Play at least 4 times and you know what? Watching Dendi gets me every time. I hate some of the toxic clowns in dota chat who say mean stuff. Anyone with eyes and ears can see he is a great kid and has grown into a great man. To say otherwise is just dumb. God bless you Dendi.
Dendi is a humble dude 🤙🤙💯❤️ what a Legend
This watch party is so great with some of your insight about eSports in general.
Can't wait for the Ti10 True Sight!
the dendi story i remember watching it back when it came out - it brought tears to my eyes.
watched it again now with you grub - same. Seems like i forgot how important dendi was back then. He was like a beacon for all gamers worldwide.
He's in the Mount Rushmore of gamers for sure, what a legend!
That was a very good watch with your commentary.
It's so interesting to hear that behind every player is a person with very real problems and hopes and dreams.
Very emotional documentary actually. As an asian, the story of Hyhy fit me the most. Hope his love story still remains.
i was a viewer since wc3 times, nice to see you joining dota 2 Grubby!! You instantly became one of my favorite channels! Keep up the great content! You are so charming brother!
great improvement also in so short time!! Stay safe!
wow is that really you mr deep sound

i finally finished it, the documentary is amazing and ur reaction and thought process is amazing! i actually never watch long youtube videos like this, specially this one which is 1 hour and a half, but u are the exception thank you and more power!
Wow, thank you!
Everytime I watch this documentary, it makes me emotional.
Grubby, you're like a breath of fresh air in the dota community. I've always appreciated you, but you coming to Dota is just the best thing ever.
Much love
I've been waiting for this! Thanks grub grub .
Man, so many legends in this video. I feel old like a rock ^^
James, I miss his cocky character. Also, I am so sorry for hyhy. He seemed so lonely. I think he is a great guy. For the pc cord which was hidden by Dendi's mother, I can relate so much. The same happened to me and I found out that the cord of our water boiler could help me out as well :D
This TI started it all, it was an unbelievable prize pool and it will be my favourite TI for ever! The one Ehome game is still one of my favourite DotA matches ever, and I have been watching a ton!
What I love about this true sight is, that not only the top 3 teams get their documentary. It feels more like a family this way! What a wonderful piece of history
KEEP UPLOADING MORE OF THESE THEY R FUN TO WATCH ND UR COMMENTARY AND INSIGHT RULEZ 2 MUCH LUV GRUB
I am quite touched with the documentary it brings many memories and nostalgia feeling. I always fear what I do don't bring food to the table which really forced me to alternate way but then we move forward with our decision that takes on the very single day or moment which shaped us until to this day.
I’m so grateful for your perspective and insights Grubby!
it's hard to believe how long it's been since WCG 2004. I was at that grandfinals in SF. what a great tournament. I never met you but did get to meet Jang Jaeho (moon) briefly after he lost. i was so hype for the wc3 competition but ended up falling in love with competitive counter strike after that event, too. you brought it up so figured i'd comment. cheers for all the great years!
I started playing dota 2 after watching the film in 2013, mostly at the net cafe. I still remembered me keep practicing DotA allstars instead on my home potato computer and sometimes partying Dota2 with my friends and scrimming with my junior/seniors in highschool.
In 2016 I won my first university tournament, Esport was barely recognizable there back then. I met a lot of great people especially my teammates.
In 2017 we made a small community in our faculty and decided to register 2 teams instead. I won it again, and our 2nd team got the 3rd place after unluckily met my team in finals.
After a long year break, a lot of things happened and esport kinda being restricted for a while, campus tournament cancelation etc, I ended up rarely touch my account, and in 2020 I decided to focus on my study. Choices has to be made.
It was a pretty short time but dota definitely changed my life. It was a lot of fun, I can't help but still watch dota pros until now.
It's a good feeling watching you play dota and bringing the community back to life. Looking forward to your content..
Thanks man!
nostalgic seeing old dota, the game changes so much
Yo Grubby! Thanks for all the entertainment and I'm so happy with your dota content! Do you ever remember playing two swedish players called Knopf and Gnu in wc3? Grew up with those guys.
Oh neat, I have an excuse to rewatch this documentary again nice
thank you or this video grubby it makes me motivate to really pursue this game, hope you see in high rank soon
This was my fav Free To Play documentary
What a fucking tearjerker, every single time I get to somehow watch this.
I thought I did a great job holding back those ninjas trying to cut onions near me until that last moment where Dendi is fishing alone.
Fear was part of EG winning TI5. Dendi is such a positive figure. A very good role model for any eSports star wannabe! Much like Grubby. Positive to a fault. Keep that spirit and you'll do better in game. It is really just as simple as that. Positive energy brings out positive results. And man, have there been some 110-0 comebacks over the years so it ain't over until an ancient is down.
Thanks for not bein' weird about the Toby stuff, much appreciated
previously I have no idea who this Grubby guy was. But recently most of the dota 2 clips video keep mentioning your name. Then I started to checkout your videos. And I really enjoy all the dota True Sight/ documentary videos, watching these videos again with you feels like I watching these videos for the first time.
As a Malaysian and esports believer, I'm actually having sort of similar situation with hyhy. But hopefully, one day I can make my parents proud of what I'm trying to pursue. And hope I could get there fast enough, so they could witness my success
watching this again brings back memories of my childhood.
All the feelings overflowing within me rewatching this documentary with Grubby. It makes me think about the past and who I am today. What's going to come out of my endeavours? At the very least I don't regret pursuing something I'm truly passionate about. I really liked the way Hyhy put it, how opportunity doesn't come often in life so if you have the possibility and the will to persevere, you should go for it. Why regret not taking it instead and wondering what could've been if you had the guts to do it.
I stopped playing Dota 2 for 2 years but lately I watched back some vid due to Grubby. Has been a fan of you since World Cyber Game 2004.
So many legends in one video, holy shit.
happyfeet pog. the transition from dota 1 to dota 2 moments. dang i forgot about this film already.
btw grubby i came from ur recent 2021 true sight video and now here, lets say i've been watching a lot of ur reaction videos lately :) Anways this video is nostalgic and one guy here i will tell you is tobby dawson. tobby is best caster in dota 2, he was always the one who casted the finals, unfortunately he got cancelled and im not even gonna defend him on what fucked up thing he did in the past but talent-wise he is legendary, ODpixel just came 2nd behind him
Fear has a really good Documentary about him aswell. Such a great story crowned by the big prize. Rly lovely guy
this is actually what got me into dota it is soooo goood
This documentary makes me feel happy and disappointed at the same time because It's really awesome to see the stories of these players who had it rough with their parents for not supporting their choices for gaming, but yet, they fought through and held on to what they believe in and got through with a big payoff. It's also devastating for some people, for those who couldn't fight through because of how strict and demanding our parents are, thus we're stuck in confusion, regret and betrayal for being robbed from your childhood.
Now you're over 30 and the words "it's just too late now" never lets you go.
damn…
The final thoughts of this documentary, when they say how we will look back at players that risked it all and gave esports a future, applies so much to Grubby as well. I think anyone who played wc3 knows the name. It is thanks to players like you who played even back then, when esports was not moving the millions of dollars it does now, that we can now proudly say that we are gamers.
It's mesmerizing seeing all the care Valve employees put into portraying and bolstering the life stories of their community while they behind the cameras probably share similar stories of hard work, passion and creativity leading them to their success as a game studios and digital marketplace, I know a big chunk of them have understandably moved on to other projects and the ones that've decided to stick with Dota continue exploring new concepts through the game but I have nothing but gratitude for them.
What I want is every retired veteran should be watching you, Grubby, and get their passion reignited once again, and maybe, just maybe, we would be able to have an exciting clash between generations of DotA players across its history. That would be my dream to see.
Actually they did at one point. But their age didn’t allow them to compete anymore. Vigoss-one of the best dota 1 player actually did played dota2 but vanished after awhile. 820, Burning, mmy,QQQ, Xiao8, Chinese legends, they all played Dota2. Sport in general are crucial, if you aged, you’re out. Ronaldo, Zidane are the same. But the best part of it is the legacy they leaves to the young generation. For example, dota exist since 2001 or something, and the burning anti mage build is still not replaceable. Ppl still make the same build regardless 20 years have passed.
@@linhtaquang4098 Point is, Grubby is around their age, and he is learning the game and getting better at it. It shouldn't be just about competition. Veterans can just jump back into the game, relearn it and have fun fighting against each other casually.
@@MrCleks Enjoying while learning is contangous
Dendi is such an awesome story and personality within esports. I wish he could have won more TIs!
Never watched this Free to play. I remember watching TI1 online and cheering for EHOME they were machines playing, seeing it again after 10 years is such a journey to my 16 years
Wow that is a great video. What a story!

who is that "scammer guy" you talk about in 22:26? =D love your streams btw, keep it up
Oh this will be good!
hey grubby! NICE VIDEO AS ALWAYS, I want to ask you, I recently heard chess called as a science game for some seious press like the ny times, do you think warcraft 3 or dota or anyother RTS could be consider the same? have you heard about the cheating scandal in chess last month? in this games can be cheating an option?
Grubby drops the early game Rolex on his dad like he drops his first TP scroll in shop.
as far as pro players go, I really think you and iceiceice meeting each other would be the best thing to happen. ice used to play warcraft 3 as well, some starcraft 2, been around since the beginning. and an overall good guy, a lil troll, but still good
not sure if you noticed but the player at 33:30 is LGDs coach during TI8.
it's QQQ
Xiao8, lgd long time coach, is the guy here 24:06
4:48 the 5 guy with trophy their my childhood team mate and rivals. That short guy on the right is my pos5 support. We play together for 3+ years 2007-10

i watched this with free to play subtitle, grubby's subtitle and my own youtube subtitle
bro i heard about how dendi always went fishing with his dad back then. When they show the clip of dendi fishing alone I legit cried :(
Its CRAZY how the notion of Drafting being the deciding factor in Dota has changed in a decade! Back then the hero kits, the tools and strategies available were lot more limited (smaller map, simpler spells, less items, no neutral items, less objectives) so you were truly locked in to your picks' niche, nowadays it's not a rarity to see the less favored team steal a win or players choosing their comfort pick over the 'correct' one.
Hi Grubby love your videos

But in all seriousness
Hyhy's Auntie is someone people should NOT tolerate.
Typical toxic family trait.
She is saying "it is your choice" yet she says that "gaming is pulling you down"
If you are providing for yourself, no one has a say on it.
Understandable from an elder perspective, but it does not give them an excuse to belittle what you love and not see it from yours.
Better to regret doing what you love and be hated for it than regret not doing it and hate those who pulled you down more.
A once in a lifetime chance comes once in a lifetime for a reason. And comes with the hardest choice you'll ever make.
hyhy 辉耀辉耀(radiance rediance) memories hit me.fear, oh my god,and also dendi!

Your take on education is right. I'm not aware of the Western Culture but for Asians it's very competitive. I remember those back breaking bags, good thing someone invented bags with wheels.

It's not in the west. Ofc every parents want their child to be doctor or attorney but it's way more laid back there. The majority won't bully their children if they want to study literature for example.
Though, even to this day, videogame isn't a career that parents are willing to accept until the child get a professional contract with a good salary, which didn't really existed back then and obviously come pretty late, when the kid already have failing grades.
fun fact: at 40:49 fear was drinking a beer. Valve decided to replace it with a water bottle.

It's not good to force yourself into a black hole of emotions after a failure. But it is also not ok "to be ok with it" and just let it go. After a failure in life there has to be mourning, pondering, meditation, and learning, among other processes, so we can learn and get better.
It applies to most things.
33:39 so funny to see how much the heroes got buffed over the years, NP with a pitiful agility gain of 1.9 back then, where as now he has one of the highest in the game at 3.6.
This made me think... I have played DotA for a long ass time... I Started on 2007. It has been a long journey with this game that will succ you in.
