  • A playthrough of Accolade's 1993 mascot platformer for the Super Nintendo, Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind.
Though Bubsy is the butt of so many internet jokes, there was a brief period of time - about a year - where Bubsy was actually viewed in a positive light. Then the sequels started.
Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind, however, was released to a great deal of hyped anticipation, and it was generally well received. It never realized its creators' dreams of becoming a mascot vehicle to challenge the likes of Mario and Sonic, but it was successful in ways that most other mascot platformers by third-party publishers couldn't manage.
It handily outsold other games of its ilk, like Sparkster (highlighting that good games don't always equate to good sales), Aero the Acrobat (meh), and Awesome Possum (an ironic name if ever there was such a thing), but was it good?
If you can cast aside the impact the sequels had on your perception of its "legacy," I'd say that in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind, you'll find a servicable but flawed platformer that would've made for a good weekend rental.
You play the titular Bubsy the Bobcat, a bright orange blob of 90s hop 'n bop 'tude, as indicated by the giant red exclamation point on his shirt.
There are sixteen stages in which Bubsy has to fight the Woolies, a race of aliens that have invaded in order to steal Earth's supply of yarn balls. The stages are mostly huge, non-linear (and sometimes maze-like) affairs packed with secret alcoves filled with bonus items, and you defeat the endless supply of enemies by jumping on their heads.
If that sounds a lot like a Sonic game, that's probably because the creator was inspired to create Bubsy after playing the Sega classic. It's certainly fast moving, cartoony, and "edgy."
The graphics and sound are the high points. Whether you love or hate the visual design, the sprites are filled with personality, the backdrops are attractive, and some of the animation looks good. The music sounds pretty nice overall - the sample quality is high and a few of the tunes are real toe tappers, like the first stage's theme, which sounds suspiciously similar to Elvis's Rock Around the Clock, maybe with a touch of Buddy Holiday's Everyday mixed in. The voices sound good, too, though the pun-filled humor is more annoying than it is funny.
So then, what could pawsibly go wrong?
Simply put, the quality of the gameplay doesn't match the presentation. The controls are loose and the awkward trajectory of Bubsy's jumps combined with the uselessness of the glide maneuver make for some frustrating moments. The camera also turns far too many jumps into blind leaps of faith. Since Bubsy goes down in a single hit, these issues all come together to make a game that's way too difficult for its own good. Until you've committed the levels to memory, you'll constantly be subjected to cheap shots that you couldn't have reasonably foreseen, really dampening the fun.
Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind isn't a terrible game. It's just a thoroughly mediocre one that happened to show up at the right place and time to become a hit. It is the best game in the series, though, for whatever that's worth.

i know Bubsy is seen as a joke these days, but I remember this game getting some pretty good press back when it came out in the Summer of 93. Yeah, the hype was out of control, but when the game came out, critics were generally kind toward it, and sales were strong. People seem to act like Bubsy got swept under the rug from the start, but really, the first game can be fun.

It's definitely not as awful as people make it out to be, but I wouldn't say it's really all that GOOD either. There's some glaring design flaws, biggest ones being too small of a field of view, and fall damage in a vertical platformer. It's not really shown much in this video, but if you go about 1.5 screens of falling without gliding and hit solid ground, you die instantly.
Still, I could name 3 or 4 worse platformers on the SNES than this, so it's not THAT awful.

@@RookMeAmadeus Fall damage was in tons of old/classic platformers nobody considers. It's NOT an issue in Bubsy, because it totally suited the cartoon emphasis of the game. Unlike other titles, you can instantly avoid it by gliding (even the tutorial and manual tells you this).

Among all the Japanese titles, at the time some people were longing for good western mascots to rival, like "this is our Sonic and it's great". well, I think that 2 wasn't that bad either, in short, apart from the schizophrenic controls of the game (which in comparison make the controls of zool and jazz jackrabbit easy to control) at least it had many advantages compared to this highly underrated gem such as: it can be done hit 3 times, the use of weapons, bonuses with frogs and with dear Arnold the armadillo and yet with underwater bonuses, and you could also buy weapons and objects and lives with collectible tickets at the end of the level! on the other hand, bubsy for jaguar was so difficult and frustrating that in comparison it made playing battletoads easy, but it had a nice soundtrack and beautifully crafted graphics! bubsy 3D... well it had some soundtracks that were nice to listen to if only it had good instrumentation but everything else was just total rubbish! the last 2 titles released for ps4 in the 2010s are not even original but just reskin din2 games like: giana sisters twisted dreams and runner3!
that's why bubsy fans (like me) consider this game the best among all its sequels!

I remember the local gaming press dubbing this one as "more fun than any blue hedgehog".
And the game certainly was an experience, it had a very good soundtrack and nice graphics, but as stated in the description, the difficulty was brutal given how fragile was Bubsy and how the camera would go crazy the moment you started running at top speed.
The one-hit nature of the titular character was what made most of the difficulty of the game, despite starting with 9 lives and additional lives being usually easy to come across.

I just want to know, why does everyone hate Bubsy honestly? I can understand he’s a rip-off and everything of like Sonic or something, and can be annoying and everything, but still, why? Rob Paulsen hated voicing him for the 2nd game and cartoon and etc.
Is it like an ongoing joke to hate the character or something? I absolutely LOVE the character in the first two games, he’s cute, his personality, and I’m not usually into the sarcastic characters at all but the way they brought him back for those two new switch games and the way he breaks the 4th wall and everything HILARIOUS! It’s VERY unlikely as he’s hated but I hope we can see more of this Bubsy in the future…. (The deleted lines that didn’t make it in the first Switch game are on here and he’s hilarious saying so many different things, it’s too bad the cutscenes and everything were so limited for those first two games so he never got to say much, honestly we need characters like him back more than ever these days, you really don’t see these types of things for characters these days anymore, he kinda has that old cartoon feel to him that you barely see these days to me, he’s witty, sarcastic, funny, breaks the 4th wall, etc. he reminds me a bit of like Yakko Warner and even unfortunately HE was toned down so much for the reboot, so we didn’t get to see his original self like the original show, but Bubsy is kinda like a newer version of him, bringing all that back, Don’t know how he can but Yakko can’t…
But anyways, honestly if people just give him a chance, I think he could make a great comeback kinda like Rayman is about to again…

I think SNES was trying to kinda spin their own version of Sonic the Hedgehog here even though Mario was considered Nintendo's "mascot". It was because of this game that when I was a kid, I started sarcastically saying "what can possibly go wrong?" whenever someone had a terrible idea 😂
I think that 2 of the bigger flaws in this game was allowing Bubsy to gain momentum to go fast, which was already Sonic's "thing". But they did it, and they didnt bother to account for the screen zipping fast. The screen was always playing catch up with you. Also, the "getting hit one time and you're dead" thing got old really fast. Plus fall damage is kind of like shooting yourself in the knee with a game like this. The fact that you can look down and pan the screen is a tad pointless because in many situations in the game, you cannot look further down than a leap of faith jump you need to make. Granted, you dont HAVE to die due to fall damage since you can glide, but what does that matter if you jumped into a whole void with no chance of landing safely? You just kind of peacefully glide slowly into another death. You didnt know it was a void because you had to have faith that there was ground below.
I mean, these are all criticisms but I loved playing this. I remember that Bubsy was actually one of the first games that I stayed up to play late with the lights off when I was getting old enough to feel that little things like that were an adventure. I was dead set on making it the first game I pull and all nighter and beat by myself. Never happened.
You know who should have gotten way more love from Nintendo? Nestor, the comic strip from the Nintendo magazines. He was in a virtual boy game for tennis I think. But Nestor should have had his own little platformer.
