Michael Berlyn supposedly spent several hours a day playing Sonic as research for this game. He must've spent the time repeatedly running headfirst into the first Motobug because he learned nothing.
what's really weird is the series creator Michael Berlyn had to write up a thesis on why Sonic was a fun and greatly designed game to convince his bosses at Accolade to greenlight making Bubsy......where the fuck did all that research go?!?! Even SEGA realized their game wasn't going to be a lick of fun if you died every time you zoomed into an enemy you couldn't see coming, that's why the Rings exist......it baffles the mind how everything about Bubsy is a failure yet he's loved in gaming culture despite being the Jar Jar binks of video games
0:38, 1:158:30 It took me awhile to figure out what was going on. Bubsy died, so the screen faded out, but it also takes 10 seconds to show off all of those points from having over 9 minutes remaining. The death at 12:02 avoided the fadeout animation, though. Seeing him spring back to life after the 8:30 one was pretty funny.
I remember playing this game as a kid and thought it was one of the hardest games ever. I believe the FURthest I ever got to was Eye of The Bobcat, but also remembering that I never raged quit. just enjoyed the progression.
I find it hilarious that in most levels you die right when you win the level, either by falling or a projectile. But it's quite impressive how fast you finished the game. I have never gotten that far in the game even though I love Bubsy. The game doesn't get the credit it deserves so I made a rock cover of the first stage theme to give it some appreciation
@@Doncroft1 I would rather play a lot of other things, but this is far from the worst thing... Bubsy 3D on the other hand... Bubsy does stand as a better game though on the small library of the Atari Jaguar, so that's nice i guess... also, 6 year old comment, nice!
I really love the level designs and strange physics of the controls in this game, I've always liked Bubsy, I fell in love with him when I was 14 and I still continue to play this one!
I'm still upset at this game still after almost 20 years from when I first played it as a child. Seeing a TAS'er crush it is cathartic to say the least. It's even a little comforting that a theoretically perfect player that never makes mistakes is STILL slowed down by the huge number of BS obstacles in the game.
There are a few level gimmicks that get in the way but it doesn't seem to affect them much. Unless you expect them to glitch through every object, they aren't slowed down by much of anything.
0:38 - They put falling damage in their motherfucking 2D platform game!? (Headline: JonTron Quits) *MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, CALL ON ME*
This character was like my gateway drug when it came to being a fan of the character who thought he was much cooler than he actually was, and that being the joke. Too bad with Bubsy it wasn't deliberate :P And holy crap this game has some long load times between certain levels. Long for a cartridge game anyway.
@@901Rayman Is it a cart? A ROM? ROM is either bad dump or needs a better emulator, but if it's a cart, maybe clean the contacts on both the SNES and cart. Otherwise, the Woolies live to see another day.
This game is great. A lot of the hate just comes from people that watched JonTron or people that never took the time to fully adjust to this game’s quirks.
it's always so much fun watching speedrunners demolish Busby games by exploiting their lackluster programing and ballance, I think Bubsy 3D still holds the record for fastest level 1 completion at 24 seconds just by easily jumping over the level boundary
The TAS final boss killing is actually standard play. Kinda crazy when you thinking about how hard the stages themselves are and then the final boss is the easiest piece of shit in the world
Indeed! and then this game is not terrible and just difficult, and as if I said that battletoads that it is unsurpassable and I would say that that game is terrible

Goddamn, I hate Bubsy. It's not just because all of his games sucked, either - he was just a shitty character all round. It was obviously some executives attempt at appealing to the greater market of gamers because there was seriously no thought put into him as a character. For instance: what's with the dumb shirt with an exclamation point on it? Why does he sound like he was voiced by an annoying schoolkid from Brooklyn? Why the Hell does a bobcat 'glide'? Why does he have precisely zero powerups to make him more playable in _any_ way (you know, like pretty much _any_ decent platforming protagonist would have - even Ecco the fucking Dolphin had a sonar powerup)? And why the Hell does he _run faster than the screen can scroll_? I challenge anyone to give me a decent answer to _any_ of those questions, because I guarantee the creators sure as Hell wouldn't be able to.
This game is basically what Sonic would be if rings didn't protect you and the trial-and-error design was dialed up to 11.

Here to say this series is getting a collection for some damn reason
I completely forgot about this game then the intro music played and it brought me back to playing this as a kid oh the nostalgia
12:05 - Just play it off, music composer. He'll be fine.
12:15 even in twelve minutes bubsy still can't believe you are still playing the game
well, I will play it 1000 times, this is my favorite platformer!
Can someone mod the health system from bubsy 2 into bubsy 1 somehow because it would make it alot betrer
It’s kind of funny how simply giving Bubsy better physics and controls would make the game slightly more bearable.
The music still gives me anxiety, I never completed it, the last level always frustrated me yet I kept playing until my cartridge got damaged 😂
Try it on the SNES emulator

Literally.

"What's with the squished bobcats?"
Squish that cat. The only thing you need to know is to squish that cat. You don't need to worry about hurting a cat.
This game is good fight me
this game is a fever dream
And as for Bubsy's pre level quips... well they don't ever get old do they?
Never😂😂😂

Geez that was fast! Especially A 16 Level Game!
man i love a 16 level game
I don’t know why, but there’s something hilarious about watching Bubsy being tossed around like a pinball for most of the game.
Bubsy Controls like a crazier Sonic. He jumps higher and has faster acceleration but his physics are really janky.
