Very noticeable difference between the two products. It would have been interesting to see you spray meguiars over the griots to see how much purple showed up. Several years ago i used eagle 1 wheel cleaner and it worked really well to remove iron deposits. It wasnhard to find but was less than $7.00 a bottle.
I remember that product really good. It was great! But they had a serious branding and label issue from what I remember. Nobody could find it because it was labeled wrong.
Thanks for the great conparison of two products that I have used on my wheels. It confirms what I have felt to be true, that the Meguiar's is more effective as a cleaner.
Great vid Jim. I like that you tested the results with the clay bar rather than relying on just the color change. It would be great for you to compare the popular iron removers such as Carpro, Sonax, meguar's, and Turtle Wax for a more comprehensive test.
I also just use 1 product for both paint and wheels - but I use a falloutremover for paint on the wheels. Works just fine. That siad: My regular wheelcleaner is an alkaline and dilutable cleaner, and are also effektive on the tires. Very economical. On regularly maintained wheels, the alkaline cleaner cleans the wheels very effciently together with a brush or similar. I just give the wheels a little squirt with the falloutremover (after using the alkaline wheelcleaner and rinsed it off) once a month or so.
I've been using the Meguiars All Wheel Cleaner as an iron remover for the paint on my cars for a couple of years now, it's one of the better working iron removers in my opinion. I just wish it could be bought in bulk 1 gallon jugs, I have 8 cars and go through a lot of product.
Does that mean dedicated iron removers do not work as effective as the wheel cleaner? Or is this just an alternative? I guess what I’m saying is. Should I be using the wheel cleaner over iron removers?
Good question. All iron removers are the same. A wheel and tire cleaner will be more of an apc but if it changes colors it’s an iron remover. Does that make sense??
Great video, and although i have not used the griot's wheel cleaner the meguiars works great. My current top pick is phoenix E.O.D. furies & koch chemie mwc. Throw a dart and either one comes up tops!! ! 👍🏼🇨🇦
Good info! Thanks Jimbo! Definitely a money saver here. I just noticed that Adam's Wheel Cleaner claims on the bottom of their site for this product is safe for paint as well. I have some of that so might think about giving that a try. It is available at a similar price point after discounts (usually 20%-30%) from their site nearly all of the time.
The Meguiars is $11 at my harbor freight. Wanted to do a decon and polish next week so I’m definitely making a trip there tomorrow lol. Thanks for the vid!
Have you happen to try sudslab zero acid wheel cleaner on paint? Wondering how it would work or any suggestions on how to get a white car clean from winter and rust spots from brakes and road grime
Very goog info. So wheel cleaners always have iron remover for the brake dust? If it says it helps dust come off easier after using a few times, how does it do that (or is that a marketing ploy)?
Not all wheel cleaners are iron removers. Some are just all purpose cleaners. They have chemicals to break down the iron that is thrown off from the break pads. An apc is just going to use regular chemicals to break down those particles without the purple coming out, which is a secondary reaction.
On another note... How are you dealing with drainage in your garage/workshop/washbay? I noticed you washing down vehicles indoors and just curious how the drainage works and how you're preventing things like mildew/mold.
What are your thoughts on Sonax "Breast" wheel cleaner? It's definitely more expensive; however, they do give you a liter compare to smaller amounts from Meguiars. It works great on my BMW M5C wheels which, gets brake dust and iron fallout in just a few minutes of driving.
Nice to know. I occasionally use iron removing wheel cleaner on my pain. I'd like to see a comparison between consumer and pro lines of the same brands such as with Mequiares.
Been using the Meg all wheel cleaner for a couple of years. Does a great job and clings to the paint and wheels better than most products I try. Need to see if. Can get this in a jug so I don’t have to go to Walmart all the time
I was always wondering that but never intended to try lol. One really important thing, you gotta make a disclaimer for people not to use acid based ones like Mothers. That will destroy the paint in minutes. In fact Mothers wheel cleaner has tons of complaints about ruining their rims. Not saying that its a bad product, but I personally don't like it and it is extremely strong for a common consumer. I imagine there are other brands that are also not quite safe for this type of activity.
How can something that is ph neutral react with anything. I’ve also tested 2 different brand of this stuff. It also turns purple when left in a plastic bowl.
You would only do this maybe 1x a year depending on where you live and how the car sits. Think of this as a liquid clay bar. You only need to clay every so often.
I feel Griots products are designed for garage queens. They're not as strong as the other product's. I put them in a class with chemical guys. Meguiars ultimate wheel cleaner is great on everything. Its thick n clingy so it wont fall off. They also sell the iron decon in a gallon but the ultimate is a better product all together.
Are these wheel cleaners/iron removers safe on plastics, rubbers, glass, and vinyl parts of vehicles? I always thought these were dangerous if you got them on painted surfaces.
As long as they don’t dry on the surface they are fine. Sometimes the iron remover will oxidize plastic. But it’s not all iron removers and not even all the time.
Meguiar's ❤️it's serious!. Looking forward to the release of their new range with the new Meguiar's M888 ceramic coating (multi-years claim with appropriate maintenance), Meguiar's ultimate ceramic coating spray, Meguiar's hybrid ceramic wash and wax, Meguiar's ultimate headlight restoration ceramic coating.......
It would be safe on paint because wheels are painted. They're really making a killing off hair perm chems. :) Ammonium thioglycolate? Maybe that Griots has other detergents for dealing with other wheel contaminants and not just iron or rust (the thing the chemical is actually reacting with). Does it clean a wheel better than Meguiars? Either way, those are expensive products. (Translation: I'm cheap)
I remember when you did this about four years ago with the Ultimate Wheel Cleaner. I thought Meguiars knows some big dummy is going to overspray the wheel and get it on the paint so it must be safe for paint. I sprayed the product on the back of a white minivan and it looked like a crime scene. Definitely a good product. I am a little surprised Griots did not lean as well.
I just bought the Mcguire wheel cleaner for $10 at harbor freight bc of your last video, comparing to spray and clay which was $30 at autozone. Thank you!
@@autodetailingpodcast I have same meguiars product that you use on your video, I had bought for wheels and I was researchin another a iron remover for paint but I saw your video I’ve felt ok for paint but my car is volvo xc40 has plastic covers all around; try as I may to avoid to not apply to plastics , it probably will touch plastics, and headlights I think. Shortly do you think meguiars ultimate all wheel cleaner is safe for plastics if it contact for short time ? Sorry for long message, and thank you for answers.. and there is also ppf on hood :S
Just a little warning, there are wheel cleaners on the market that will ruin paint in 90 seconds. Product manual tell how long it can be on surface. So be careful what product you choose.
Just be careful with plastic trim, I spotted up a plastic black B pillar when I let it sit too long on a warm day. However, I buy Adams wheel cleaner by the gallon, the blue one that turns purple, because I use it as a paint decontaminator, as well as rim cleaning. I saw a SEMA video that some company, I can't remember which, developed a new iron remover that doesn't stink, but still has a color change reaction with iron particles. Talk about innovation...
And now for all, the new product from Stoner's iron remover which smells like APC instead of rotten eggs. Instead of turning into purple it turns into orange color when reacting with iron.
As a newbie to the detailing world, I appreciate you informing me and saving me money on products like this one.👍💯
Glad to help!
I have been using Meguiars for a few years on white paint , haven't noticed any damage. I use it because it works and the cheapest

I found one bottle at Ross one day and scooped it up, have not found it since. It was very good in my opinion
eagle 1 a2z wheel cleaner is still the best wheel/tire cleaner I've ever used.

I was thinking about this the other day since I bought the megs because of the iron remover. I bought mine for $9.99 I might go get another bottle
Great demo video Jimbo. Do you have a favorite iron remover that doesn't smell that bad?
That’s a tough one. I’m gonna try out the stoners version. The turtle wax one doesn’t smell all that bad and it’s super effective.

Yes - but until then you can use 3D one with a buff and shine urofiber pad on a da

I've always thought the dedicated wheel versions have detergents that aren't necessary or found in the body ones.
That sounds like marketing to me. There’s only one main chemical that makes the product react and turn purple.

Doesn’t have the main chemical to pull the iron out.
Is wheel cleaner safe for plastic? Like headlights.
sometimes it can stain plastics, depending on dilution and the plastics itself.
