    If you can potentially lose money on drayage, why would you do that work for 10% margins on $500. That seems really risky

      Because of the volume and repetition. You can work with a customer that has 50 containers per week, and use the same carrier. Meaning, that you'll make 50 times the $50 for essentially the same amount of work covering loads.

      @@Freight360 Id be curious to see how often people get upside down on those loads, but I know its person-to-person.

      It shouldn’t happen at all if you are properly communicating the carrier charges and accessorials. The brokerage should be just passing the charges directly to the customer. But it’s common for newer brokers without experience to miss the possibility of charges the carrier runs into like a chassis split or pre pull.

    Is there a website or somewhere a broker can go to bid on freight from a shipper?

      You have to be invited to the bid. Typically it is an RFP process. Some shippers do have spot bids for freight but those are only available to providers with established relationships. You could also get put on a load list from shippers that send out daily emails.
