The parent album, 'Fish Out of Water' is the ONLY solo album from Chris Squire. He often plays the bass as a lead instrument, as he did for the entire record!
Oh, and he almost exclusively played the bass with a pick, not his fingers. He was a tall man at about 6'4" and he had huge hands! I have been a fan of Yes since 1974. And because of Chris I attempted to play the bass for a few years, but alas, it wasn't to be.
I did finally meet him after a concert in 2014, a few short months before his untimely passing the following year. RIP Fish.... 🙏🎸🐟 💙

The notable names here are Barry Rose, who was Chris' choirmaster when he was a boy (and who went on to become choirmaster at St Paul's Cathedral)! That must have been very cool to bring him into this project. The other is Andrew Jackman, who was in The Syn with Chris in 1967 (do some digging on RUclips if you're interested in hearing what THAT sounded like!) He and Chris remained close friends for years (he provided the string arrangement for Yes' "Onward"), until Jackman's untimely death in 2003.

Thank you for playing this session which was just wonderful! Despite being a Yes fanatic from their third album onwards, I somehow missed this solo effort. I knew of it, but hadn't gotten around to actually listening to it. Chris was the greatest and I loved the guy as I think everyone else did. You can tell from his playing he was a beautiful spirit. If it escaped your attention, the album title had a double meaning of being out of the Yes context and also Chris' Pisces sun sign symbolized by a fish and more typically seen as two fish tail-to-tail swimming in opposite directions.
When Yes hit their stride, Squire seized everyone's attention with his extraordinary sound and playing. Chris literally caused Rotosound roundwound Swing Bass 66 strings to become enormously popular which I believe he first learned from his admiration of John Entwistle's (The Who) bass sound. The beauty of these particular strings is they have a very clean punchy sound and with right heart and soul, a ringing singing near vocal-like quality. Thereafter, a slew of famous bassists all switched to Swing Bass 66. But it was Chris who had a revolutionary impact musically with playing demonstrating great musical intelligence far beyond simply the strings he favored. Love these solo tracks which have a very gentle beauty to them.
I feel blessed that I saw Chris and the boys in concert in Denver '75, late 80's Oakland Coliseum and finally 2015 at the Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, TN. It was at the Oakland concert Chris did something so memorable and special I've got to tell everyone. As was his custom, I believe Chris was dressed in white and at some point probably half way through the show, he raised his '64 white Rickenbacker vertically above his head with the head stock aimed at the ceiling. What he did was so absolutely original, he simply plucked a ringing single note in the four directions north south east and west beautifully demonstrating there's a world of sound in that singularity. So as the sound decayed to nothing, Chris made a quarter turn and repeated the same note until he completed the circle and paid tribute to all his fans whether they were behind the band, off to the sides or in my case, facing the band. Wouldn't you have to love a guy like that?! Chris was the heart of Yes and despite being in a band of musical giants, he was the rarest possibility, bassist as superstar. You can plug in Billy Sherwood or whoever you like and although they're very good (ARW/The Royal Affair for instance), cannot duplicate

Thumbs up guys. The drummer is Bill Brufurd on this album. The keyboard player is a childhood friend of Chris and some tracks were recorded on a real church organ in a church in UK. Very difficult to recoed as a church organ has a slight delay on attack. The keyboard player had to calculate that slight delay to be in synch with the band. I think this was the only solo album by Chris Squire God bless his soul. Keep it up you are doing a grat job darlings.

I've heard that two or three Beach Boys members provided uncredited guest vocals on "You By My Side", but I forget where I heard that or the details so I can't vouch for it as fact. (P.S. "You By My Side" was featured on American TV network NBC's show, "Good Girls" S2 Ep13, "King" @ about 23 minutes in.)

Okay I know this is unbelievable but if you have the tech you can prove it. Jon’s voice slowed by 10% is Chris Squire’s voice. Don’t misunderstand. They’re two separate people and each has his own voice. But Jon’s voice is the same as Chris Squire’s voice but with a 10% offset. This is why their harmonies are so amazing to hear. It’s like overdubbing, but it’s not. Check it out. This is for real. It was an accidental discovery.

Deserves far better exposure outside the Yes fandom. I bought this and Steve's Beginnings on the same day and although I like Beginnings I adore this. Hearing Chris reunited with Bill and exploring weird time signatures is just a delight. I once heard Chris say that he didn't count those times but just felt them. Try telling that to most classically trained musicians and watch their jaws drop!

They’re basically three members of Yes on this album. Bill Bruford, Patrick Moraz and Chris. There’s no guitar on this album except for a little bit played by Chris in Silently Falling. This is one of my favorite albums of all time! After the Relayer tour, the band went on a hiatus and each member recorded a solo album, then they went on the 1976 Solos tour and played some new music from each member. After the Drama tour in 1980, Yes disbanded, but regrouped with a more poppier sound along with new guitarist and songwriter Trevor Rabin in 1982.

So, after Relayer, Yes band members (Squire, Moraz, Anderson, Howe and White) decided they would make a solo album each and then perform aspects of each as part of the next Yes world tour. Fish Out of Water is Chris's. You can catch bits of the solo tour as bootlegs on RUclips (Yes Solo Albums tour). The band dropped lots of the solo material as fans wanted more Yes material... Moraz left and Wakeman rejoined before they made the next album Going For the One (which incidentally Moraz had drafted some of the songs - including some of Awaken). Check out the other Yes solo albums from this time. :)

You're right about Chris' voice, how it blended so well with Jon Anderson's voice. In fact, I was shocked at how good Yes sounded in the 1980s when Jon Anderson left and Trevor Horn came onboard to sing for their Drama album. Of course Trevor didn't have the same range as Jon, but still, it sounded much like Yes. This is an amazing album, over the years I wore out both an album and cassette from listening over and over. And With You By My Side, you can hear Chris' experience growing up as a member of a choir. I really miss Chris and his incredible talent. During this period, immediately following "Relayer," Yes took a sabbatical while Moraz, Squire, Anderson and Howe all put out their own solo albums. It is revealing to hear the unique sound each member brings to their combined sound. The band reunited with Rick Wakeman after this on the band's next album release, "Going For the One." Patrick Moraz never played with them again, so this marks another period of transition for Yes. I highly recommend Jon Anderson's solo album, "Olias of Sunhillow" which came out during this same time period. You can clearly pick out what flavors each member brings, especially the contrast between Squire's project, and Anderson's. "Fish Out of Water" sounds like Yes without Anderson, and "Olias of Sunhillow" sounds like Anderson without Yes. To my ear, the signature Yes sound evolved dramatically every single time a member left the band or returned.

So glad you went with "Fish out of Water" as a first foray into solo works. If you enjoy Yes musicians doing solo works, JAnderson's "Olias of Sunhillow" is a great album, as is PMoraz's album "I" particularly the instrumentals there. Thanks for your channel N&L

I still have my vinyl copy of this album which I bought when it was first released. In those days I listened to all sorts of different groups and soloists. If you like Chris Squire, maybe you would enjoy hearing the Swedish group Solar Plexus - particularly their double album of the same name.

Wonderful and blissful reaction to one of my all time favorite albums, perhaps my favorite in some ways. I bought the vinyl when it first released, and loved it, but it took me a few listens to start realizing what a masterpiece that it really was.... Thank you guys so much for your energy ')

This was between Relayer and Going For The One. Relayer keyboardist Patrick Moraz and former Yes drummer Bill Bruford played on this album as well.

Patrick Moraz' solo album at this time, "I" is very different and unusual. Very heavily polyrhythmic, almost like a "World music" thing about it. It's worth listening to, for sure. More interesting than the medieval knights and wizards and wives type of music Wakeman was writing anyway.

A thoughtful and insightful reaction from you both as usual. I found out recently that Chris was a great Beach Boys fan, which is obvious on this track as the vocals have a Beach Boys feel at times. I have not heard this before even though I have listened to Yes for fifty years!

This is a beautiful album, after YES released 'Relayer' in
1974, they were getting exhausted from the long tours and the kind of material they were writing, recording and producing was so demanding and then having to perform these epic 20 minute long compositions night after night. They decided to take a much needed break. Jon Anderson also released a solo project at this time, the album 'Olias of Sunhillow' actually rivals and outshines Chris's release, believe it or not. I adore Chris's music and it is true that he is the heart of YES but Jon Anderson created something so beautiful and spiritually pure, that it showed us that if Chris was the heart, then Jon was the soul behind this legend. Please check out 'Olias of Sunhillow', you will feel cleansed and renewed!!

Didn't know this, but like it. Sounds to me more like Yes before Yessongs, which means better than anything which came after, my personal opinion. Fun fact: when I looked for more Chris Squire reactions in youtube, I found a short video, showing him and Roger Taylor of Queen recording Smoke on the water, how funny is that ? :-)

Bill Bruford on Drums and Patrick Moraz playing organ, in the years between 1975-76 all members of yes Steve Howe, Chris Squire, Pat Moraz, Alan White and Jon Anderson decided to take a break after Relayer and work on solo Albums, Steve produced Beginnings with help of Alan, Bill Bruford, And Patrick Moraz, Chris produced Fish out of water, with Bill and Patrick, Patrick Moraz produced History of the i and enlisted a bunch of Brazilian musicians, Alan produced Ramshackle with all friends a very non Prog album showing his different styles, and Jon Anderson produced Olías of Sunhillow an album where he played all instruments by himself and it was the last to come out.

After the Relayer album, the members of Yes took a break and all did solo albums at the same time. Chris did Fish Out of Water, Steve Howe did Beginnings, Jon Anderson did Olias of Sunhillow, Patric Moraz did the Story of i, and Alan White did Ramshackled. Bill Bruford plays drums on Fish Out of Water and Patric Moraz provided keyboards. When the band reconvened with Going For the One Patrick Moraz left and Rick Wakeman returned. They followed up that album with Tormato, a not particularly good album and the Rick Wakenman and Jon Anderson exited the band and Geoff Downs and Trevor Horn of the Bugles came on board for Drama which was very good album and then the band broke up until reforming with Owner of a Lonely Heart, actually 90125. since you like these songs you should check out Chris and Patrick and Bill Bruford performing them on the Old Grey Whistle Test....ruclips.net/video/RA_wEnOVWcQ/видео.html

One of my absolute favorite Christmas songs. I play it on repeat often. There are a couple of versions of it, but I prefer the original single version you mentioned as opposed to the later "Swiss Choir" version. I like that ex- wife Nikki sang backup on this song as she did on Hold out Your hand.
