    I put my potted geraniums, after cutting them down, directly in my garage. Give them a bit of water, cover them with a blanket and put them to sleep for winter. pull them out in spring and begin watering them. They take a good 4-6 weeks to bloom but it works every year!

      Will this work up in the mountains? I live in an elevation of 4500’. We get snow and the temperature drops into the teens at night and usually in the low to mid 20’s farenhight during the day. Thank you.

    I keep mine in their balcony planting boxes, just carried in from the garden in November. I trim the bad parts off, cut back the water, place high on the table to avoid frost, but to give them daylight. The glassed-in balcony room is perfect. I have geraniums which are 7 years old. I take 3-4 cuttings in the fall, in case one would die.

    I have some geraniums that survive the winters outside in London. They grow in pots near to the house. They look rather dead at some point but then they sprout again the following year. They are a bit slower to get going again than the ones you can buy from the shops each year but that's o.k with me. They catch up before long.

    • @LearnHow2
      @LearnHow2  2 года назад +7

      They can survive outdoors but it can be hit and miss. Frosts will kill them and cold wet soil will rot them. Keep safe.

    I have done this for several years now. But, I put mine in paper yardwaste bags & close the bags & store them in a cool spot in my basement.
    I bring them up in the Spring & pot them up in the house. I put them outside when the frost danger is over. It’s not the idea of saving money, it’s just really nice to see them start to grow again! 😊

    • @marigeobrien
      @marigeobrien 10 месяцев назад

      That's a good alternative if you have them. The important thing is to keep them in the dark and in a container that breathes. I'm doing mine again this year. I lost a few last year but most of them came back. I agree that it's not about the money-- I just hate to see plants die when they don't have to. I used to keep them in the house over winter but it was a strain to have to water them all winter. This is so much easier!

    I live in Northeastern Montana..I have had my geraniums for years...the middle of September I cut them back to about 2" clean out all the dead leaves and debris from the pots..I store them in the back room of my garage where its dark most all day( morning sun only) and keep the temperature at 35-40 ° ..I also do this with other outside plants I want to keep..I water lightly on the first of every month from October-April....after the last frost I bring them outside.. tempering them in the sun for a week or so before setting them out for spring (taking them in at night or covering if the night temp falls below 40) this has worked well..but I'll consider trying to dig them up next fall..It will save space in the garage if I compact them in a box not store them in the pots ..thanks for the info..😊

    Thank you for this video. I’ve been researching how to keep mine over the winter. When I was a child (60 years ago) the lady who I stayed with would pull hers and hang them root end up in her outdoor shed. I don’t recall anything other than that. I’m planning to attempt to store mine both bare root and some in pots in an outdoor shed.

      My geraniums are in pots. I trim the plants back to about 4 - 6" and remove most of the leaves. I then put the pots in my garage and cover them with a cardboard box, so the plants are in the dark. I water them a small amount about once a month. You will see new growth appear in February or March, so I water a little more. Then when it is warm enough, I put them outside. I have some plants that are more than 3 years old. I have taken cuttings from them that I rooted in water to make additional plants. Sometimes I lose 1 or 2. My brother-in-law does as this video, except he uses brown paper bags. Good luck.

    I may have removed too many leaves from mine. I wrapped them lightly in newspaper and laid them in a cardboard box in my basement. It's quite dry down there, so I've been turning the paper wrapped bundles and giving them a light spray of water every couple of days. The paper is always completely dry when I check them, so I don't think this will contribute to mold. I hope they will make it through, but I also have cuttings from these same plants started in my plant room for winter, just in case.

I still had the very middle base root system but the roots wrapped around the outer soil i tore a bit.i guess my soil was too moist to try to transplant. Please help me with this cause i have severe ocd and im big worry wart dont know if i sabotaged the plant. Worried it will die. If it helps it came from a nursery and i planted lastnight and realized i needed to move elsewhere this morning. I just get a big trashcan and put several pots in the can which leaves pockets of air and then put the trashcan in the garage for winter storage. Easy-Peasy. Take out when warmth returns and take cuttings or nurse the plants back to health in the spring.

    I grow geraniums in London in pots, but I take mine in when hard frost beckons. I have an army of plastic saucers ready. In a bad winter they might be indoors for a fortnight, in a good winter a couple of days. Granted you need space and attentiveness. Result: no catch up needed, they bloom all year round and are large.
