Thank You for making & sharing this awesome video. ( My first killing frost usually happens in early October & I can't safely re-plant geraniums until mid May. Will they last this long, out of the ground?)
I will definitely do this for the first time, thank you. Question: in the spring do you plant the whole plant or take clippings from just the top and re-root only the fresh clippings?
Thank you for this video. I’ve been researching how to keep mine over the winter. When I was a child (60 years ago) the lady who I stayed with would pull hers and hang them root end up in her outdoor shed. I don’t recall anything other than that. I’m planning to attempt to store mine both bare root and some in pots in an outdoor shed.

I took cuttings last Autumn and over wintered in pots. With the bad summer we had, those plants are still small and few flowered. I notice you only put three in your large box. Could I fit in more of the small ones? is September too soon to be lifting them?
I've just re-watched your video as I stored my geraniums a few weeks ago following your advice, but I have just realised I haven't closed the cardboard box lid so they're open to the light, do they need to be in total darkness to store properly over the winter? Thank you ❤️
I may have removed too many leaves from mine. I wrapped them lightly in newspaper and laid them in a cardboard box in my basement. It's quite dry down there, so I've been turning the paper wrapped bundles and giving them a light spray of water every couple of days. The paper is always completely dry when I check them, so I don't think this will contribute to mold. I hope they will make it through, but I also have cuttings from these same plants started in my plant room for winter, just in case.
Hi Suzanne. Please dont worry. The water is not necessary. At the end of winter the leaves will have fallen off. See my other video ruclips.net/video/irIXwKzT1Hg/видео.html to see what happens in spring. Keep safe.
My only question is, when do you do this? I'm presuming it's before the first frost. Can you do it earlier? Or will they be hurt if you still have a few warm days?
Mine survive as long as the temperature is above freezing and also not warm. For peace of mind you can mist spray the roots once a month - but too much water will cause rot.
If you've planted out your geraniums in containers in spring but a late overnight frost is forecast, should you bring them indoors - a shed or a garage - overnight?
I'd been Googling about over wintering geraniums and came across your video. From everything I've read it said you should soak the plant roots once a month, do you do this or just box them up and totally leave them till potting up for Spring? Thank you 🙂
Hi Lisa. I leave mine without water and have never had a problem. However if your storage area is very dry then I think it would be best just to give the roots a mist spray once a month. Be careful not to get too wet as that could encourage mold. Keep safe.
Do they need to be sprayed? Some webpages say they may dry up specially the roots. Is that true? Or they are able to come back even if they look like a dried stick?
I just get a big trashcan and put several pots in the can which leaves pockets of air and then put the trashcan in the garage for winter storage. Easy-Peasy. Take out when warmth returns and take cuttings or nurse the plants back to health in the spring.
Before I am told this is a hit or miss approach, I say I have really nothing invested and if the trashcan approach fails I can throw them out in the spring but I have had success for a couple of years and I will do it again.
Hi Martha. They will start growing again early spring. You can get them going again but putting in pots but dont plant them out until the danger of frost has passed. Sorry but I have no experience of tillage radishes. Keep safe.
Hi Martha. I'll look into it. I leave my parsnips growing in the ground over the winter - the frost improves the sweetness and flavour as the starch is coverted into sugar. Keep safe.
@@LearnHow2 thank you for the information , I've been trying to grow things for years I have a bit of a black thumb I kill every plant I care for, then I found your videos and now I know all the mistakes I was making I could never find in all gardening books I have read. So thank you.
Sir: A distant relative planted a particularly hardy and beautiful little geranium beside my aunt's marker at the cemetery. I watched as it endured a dozen frosts and finally, after two snowfalls, I dug it up thinking I would put it in a pot and nurse it back to health over the winter in a sunny room. The plant, still showing quite a bit of green clung tenaciously to the soil. I finally got it out, and transplanted. I gave it plenty of light and a little water, but it declined rapidly in just two days. I'm thinking the shock was too much. I have now cut off all the dead leaves and stalks, leaving only the main stalks. I shook off most of the dirt, and placed it into a box as you suggest. Does it have a chance of recovering when I plant it in the spring? The only place I can store it is in a 2 - 10 deg C garage or a 15.5 deg basement. Which offers the bestchance for this plant?

I grow geraniums in London in pots, but I take mine in when hard frost beckons. I have an army of plastic saucers ready. In a bad winter they might be indoors for a fortnight, in a good winter a couple of days. Granted you need space and attentiveness. Result: no catch up needed, they bloom all year round and are large.
I do the same and they bring beauty in the windows throughout the winter. Cut them back if they get too leggy and plant the cuttings for more geraniums. They last for years!

Can I do this with diplodenia?
Thank you so much !! I will try. ...
Good luck with your growing and keep safe.
My only question is, when do you do this? I'm presuming it's before the first frost. Can you do it earlier? Or will they be hurt if you still have a few warm days?
Yes before the first frost. If you do it too soon they will start growing in the box and may dry out. They have to be kept cool.
Do they need to be watered-down during storage? I live n Ireland so they b in box from nov to may 7 months ? Will they surive this long in box 📦 ?
Mine survive as long as the temperature is above freezing and also not warm. For peace of mind you can mist spray the roots once a month - but too much water will cause rot.
Great video! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
If you've planted out your geraniums in containers in spring but a late overnight frost is forecast, should you bring them indoors - a shed or a garage - overnight?
Yes bring them in overnight if a frost is forecast. Keep safe.
I never knew this was possible! I’m looking to take out my winter cyclamen, can these be stored in a similar way?
Sorry Laura but I have no experience of Cyclamen so cannot advise you. Keep safe.
have heard of paper bag storage for geraniums. this seems so much easier.
straight to the point, thanks
Thank you too!
Keep safe.
Thank you for that. I have tried various methods and nothing works. Maybe this will.
You're welcome!
Do they need to be sprayed? Some webpages say they may dry up specially the roots. Is that true? Or they are able to come back even if they look like a dried stick?
If the storage temperature is too high then they may need spraying. If the plants are brittle then you may have lost them. Keep safe.
Can this be done with other types of plants like zinna's colius and begonias?
Sorry Christa I have no experience of this
I just get a big trashcan and put several pots in the can which leaves pockets of air and then put the trashcan in the garage for winter storage. Easy-Peasy. Take out when warmth returns and take cuttings or nurse the plants back to health in the spring.
Before I am told this is a hit or miss approach, I say I have really nothing invested and if the trashcan approach fails I can throw them out in the spring but I have had success for a couple of years and I will do it again.
Hi Patricia. If it works for you then ok! Keep safe.
When do you usually start preparing for first planting? And do you have any experience with tillage radishes? If so what is your opinion on them?
Hi Martha. They will start growing again early spring. You can get them going again but putting in pots but dont plant them out until the danger of frost has passed. Sorry but I have no experience of tillage radishes. Keep safe.
Thanks for this tip, I'm going to try it tomorrow if we don't have frost tonight. Its quite chilly here in Chester.
Yes we have had frosts for the last 3 nights here in the Midlands. Keep safe.
Thank you I’ll try this
Good luck Anne. Keep safe.
Thank you very much , it's very interesting! 💐🤗❤️
Hi Ioana. Glad you liked it! Keep safe.
I just bring them into the house and put them by the kitchen window. Works great.
You can do this but I grow so many plants I dont have the room. Keep safe.
Would this method work with Gerber daisies, too?
Sorry I have no experience of this.
I always just throw all my baskets away. But I’m
Going to try and store my mine per this video that was very informative. 👍🏼
Thankyou for your appreciation! Good luck with your growing!
I do that or use a paper bag. But, first I take end cuttings to propagate over winter in my greenhouse. That way, in spring I have lots.
Could you please do one on how to store potatoes, carrots and parsnips for the winter, thank you very much.
@@LearnHow2 do you just go dig them up when you want to cook some?
Do we need to water them when they’re in the box during winter? Will they dry out? Thanks for your tips
I just give the roots a very light mist spray once a month. Do not wet the plants as this will encourage mold growth. Keep safe.
Do I have to label the box?
Its your choice.
Does anyone knows when we can plant them again, what time of year
I have a video showing how to bring them out of storage. Plant them outside when risk of frosts has passed. Keep safe.
@@LearnHow2 😊🙏
In Colorado's, I plant mine out the 2nd or 3rd week in May.
Thanks, did this today.
Hi Catherine. That's great! Keep safe.
A+ video. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Is it possible to put several géraniums into the cardbox ? Thank you for your answer .
Hi Marie Helene. Yes - that is what I do. Keep safe.
Sir:
A distant relative planted a particularly hardy and beautiful little geranium beside my aunt's marker at the cemetery.
I think it will be ok if you store it over winter at 2-10 degC. I think the basement will be too warm and dry it out. Keep safe.
THANK U so much for this Info☘Now, I can save my plants & do not kill them anymore.
Hi Mia. You are very welcome. Keep safe.
Today, I make my pink&white Geraniums ready for Winter Sleeps.Stay health&safe. AND BE ALLWAYS HAPPY WITH YOUR PLANTS♥️FROM GERMANY
Can do this way for Deisy and others flowers?
Sorry Edgard but I have no experience of this. Keep safe.
Any ideas on storing smaller and more tender fuchsia over winter? Thank you
This may help. www.gardenfocused.co.uk/plants/fuchsia/overwinter-tender-fuchsia.php. Keep safe.
Is it possible to adopt this method for ivy geraniums ?
Hi Marie Helene. Yes you can. Keep safe.
Gee they grow like weeds here in Australia all year round. Never imagined people treating an old geranium with such love.
I like this plant but it doesn't like me
@Millicient Aspinet Was!!!! 15 Dollar??? So viel?? Kaum zu glauben. Am liebsten schicke ich dir Geranien und du schickst mir hochdosierte Vitamine Supplements aus dem Drugstore.
(KEINE DROGEN!! Nur Nahrungsergänzung!)
Ha ha. I bet that it looks very odd to you! Keep safe.
Amazing info. Thank you so much!🥰🥰🥰
You are very welcome. Keep safe.
Thank you very helpful ☘️🇮🇪💚
Hi Charlotte. Glad to be able to help! Keep safe.
I used to bring mine inside and placed them east in the window sill. They kept gving me flowers and after some years I gave them away to save space to my other plants.
Hi Amie. Will you grow any in the future? Keep safe.
@@LearnHow2 I only have one geranium and just brought it in.. you keep safe too and thank you.
Will this box method work if i left only few leaves on them?
Yes it will. New leaves will grow in the spring. Keep safe.
@@LearnHow2 thank you so much. I accidentally cut most of them. I thought I would like to make it sleep in a dry compost in the garage (before i saw this video). Which do you think works better? This method or putting them in a dry compost and chuck them in the dark garage? Appreciate your help. Been panicking as I am one of the lockdown gardeners.. newbie
@@mjackson9067 I would advise my method. Air needs to be able to get to the plants to prevent mold forming.
@@LearnHow2 thank you very much! This is very helpful
If i tore some of my geraniums roots will it still grow? I tore some when i went to transplant them in a different location. I still had the very middle base root system but the roots wrapped around the outer soil i tore a bit.i guess my soil was too moist to try to transplant. Please help me with this cause i have severe ocd and im big worry wart dont know if i sabotaged the plant. Worried it will die. If it helps it came from a nursery and i planted lastnight and realized i needed to move elsewhere this morning. So how the roots mold to the pot they were no longer molded to that shape i broke a bit off tryinf to dig it up. I replanted but fear it will start yellowing to die
Hi Heather. Please dont worry. They are strong plants and will withstand some root damage. From what you say everything will be ok. Best wishes.
Good, quick video with all information needed. Volume was low though.
Sorry about that
But I'm afraid to do this, if I don't see spring result.
Hi Irina. I show you what happens in Spring in my other video. See ruclips.net/video/irIXwKzT1Hg/видео.html
That is perfectly valid but unfortunately I dont have the space. Keep safe.
