It's great for shortcuts, recovering from being hit, dodging a blue shell, etc. The only thing it's honestly not that great for is getting a speed boost to pass somebody 😂

You can "dodge" it too with gettint hit by a banana or track obsticle. You dont exactly dodge it but it loses less time. And also if you get hit by it while in the air it loses less time

@@Ozinarg They make you unable to be hit by the blue shell if used at the right timing. It's a specific case that was coded into the game to allow blue shell dodges. The reason you can't dodge a red shell with it is because they did not write the code to allow that. If I had to guess the mechanism, it's something like this: During a few frames of the blue shell's descent, the game checks if the target has activated a mushroom in this period. If yes, then the blue shell explosion has no effect on this player.

If I had to guess, I'd assume so Given that it seems to be the Blast Itself that causes the Damage (being how it can affect other players) so I think it'd most likely still save you (assuming it was Timed Properly)
You are kinda correct, however there's a surprising number of people that still don't know.@@absolutezerochill2700 it actually blocks just about anything, as long as you use it just before you get hit it will block any kind of shell as well as boomerangs, fireballs, bananas, bomb-ombs, and even boos. IIRC, it can also repel people using a super star.
My friend has actually dodged a blue shell by using someone’s mushroom coming from the other direction on Lap 3 if Paris Promenade. That will likely never happen again

The mushroom does not make you invincible for any period of time. Each blue shell checks if you used a mushroom up to 9 frames before you got hit, and does not hit you if you used a mushroom. This does not apply to any other item than the blue shell that is specifically targeting you.
I watched the short on dodging the blue shell with mushrooms yesterday. I tried it for myself today and I actually dodged it on the first try. I felt godlike in that moment.

In old games mk games, like wii, where it is possible to dodge a spike sheel with a mushroom you need to have a really good timing for pull the trick, but in MK 8 the mushroom just gives you immunity to the spike shell's explosion, basically in MK Wii it was not intended that the player could dodge the spike shell with a well timed mushroom boost, but in MK8 nintendo transformed that unintentional interaction into an actual feature coded into the game.
the mushroom and the loud speaker are the only things I've found that counter the blue shell. The mushroom is self explanitory, and the loud speaker effects EVERY item in the game except the star and bullet bill.
I did this by COMPLETE accident once. My parents and I were trying to get 3 stars on every cup in deluxe, so whoever wins first (usually me, sometimes my dad, and never my mom) the other two will try to help win the other 3. So this one level I was very far ahead because my dad was in second and it gave me a chance to get a gap. I was playing as Link with the Hylian set on 200cc which isn't as hard as it would seem. Anyway, I got hit by not one, not two, but THREE blue shells on ONE track. Not one cup, one TRACK. But before the 3rd one, there was a lighning strike, and as it came for me, I came up on a mushroom that was sitting in the road that someone lost in the lightning strike. I was just like, "Okay, well, I guess I'll go up to it so I have a boost after I'm hit." But at the EXACT moment it touched down, I hit the mushroom and dodged the blue shell. I was screaming like something else. I never knew you could do that! I confirm it works! You just have to time it right. Also, before I hit the mushroom, I was doing decently at outrunning it. But man, that's never happened again. Lol!

It's kinda keeping within the guidelines of the already established effects. In Mario's universe, it makes you grow(energy) and allows you to take damage. So, using it on a kart makes it go faster and gives a short bit of invulnerability.

The reason is because the mushroom has invincibility frames vs explosive blasts. In mariokart DS, jumping and boosting simultaniously did this too.

Don’t know if anyone will read this, but on DK summit for Mario Kart Wii, back in like 2010 or something, I dodged a blue shell with the half pipe boost, and spent the next several years trying to replicate it, but never could. This video is causing me a psychosis.
