I got asked this question by somebody who came to visit my channel and decided to make an impromptu video about it. Is food service worth it? The short answer is it depends, but I decided to give them more detailed response to whether or not it’s a good idea to work in a kitchen as a chef or in food service.

Thank you so much for this, you have no idea how helpful this is. You pretty much answered every question I had, and you also gave me some motivation because at the end of the day, the biggest reason on why I even thought about making a career out of cooking is because I love all things food related. My dream job is to become a private chef. I’m genuinely thinking about going the military path to get a headstart.

I'm 25 currently working as a Head Chef. I totally agree with you that the people is the best part of the job. I get so much satisfaction out of people complimenting my food, it honestly makes my day. However like you said, work/life balance can suck especially if you're trying to spend time with your family. I've been wanting to start a personal chef business so I can essentially just be my own boss and cook for my clients. I love cooking but I understand the reality of this industry. Great video man!!

Starting out at Chili's as a line cook at 16 an hour with no prior line cook experience I've been in fast food all my life but I'm excited for the change, I truly do enjoy to cook and put a smile on People's face !

I was a, ‘Corporate Trainer’ for Chili’s around 2003!…. Used to be a great company to learn measurements, procedures, and cost control!…. They didn’t mess around!…. There was a very specific way to do everything!…. Everything had a very well defined way to do everything!…. 👍

@@melvinatkins998 thanks bro ! I'm curious to know where they'll start me at ? Will I be thrown on the grill the first day or what is training like ??

@@streetpyro- It’s been over 20 years now!…. I don’t know anymore!…. A corporate kitchen is very different than a family owned business!…. You will learn a lot from both!…. Corporate chain restaurants will teach you a lot about managing cost, and a very scientific way to operate a kitchen!…. Very important!…. 💯. But that being said?…. You have to work in some family owned restaurants as well!…. Those corporate cartoons will teach you a lot!…. And they know their stuff!…. But Mrs. Urma actually taught me how to cook food!…. She was amazing!…. Never measured anything!…. Broke every conceivable rule in a kitchen!…. But I remember her food the most!…. She never messed up!…. Her food was always awesome!…. She worked by ‘feelings!’…. I would suggest to learn from both styles!…. 🦉

I guess it depends what state you live in, and how expensive it is to live in that state. But if I could go back, I would've got into a line of work that would set me up for my future, 401k, retirement, investments, something where I could make enough to save money. Im 40 and have no retirement. Im F'd. Get a job that will help you save for your future, life is short, very short.

    Hi 86,d
Question: Can I ask your opinion about what you think about starting in the catering industry at a late age? I am 37 and have made a switch from barber to basic cook in the kitchen, and i effing love it! Looking forward to hearing your response. thank you in advance.

keep an eye on your (mental) health. this career is highly demanding on all aspects of your mind and body and especially if you have chronic issues like auto-immune diseases or other things that are impacted by stress, be a bit careful. and be careful with who you work for, here in Germany abuse and exploitation in the catering and restaurant business is very common. so if you have the feeling that (some) people aren‘t treated with proper respect and that there‘s something off with the whole meta, step away. all from my own experience in the industry.

Fucking no, it’s one of the most exploitative and souls grinding industries to exist

That’s honestly case by case. There are lots of ways to handle employment gaps and if you burnt your bridges with other jobs. It’s worth talking about at length actually.
