You should go back and react to the original videos from the 70’s when the albums came out….they are more true who Meatloaf is and when his voice was intact before he had a surgery that nicked his vocal cords and destroyed his voice. You’ll see his real talent and why all 3 of his albums went off the charts. Each song is a different twist… try them!

Meat Loaf would be turning in his grave to hear you say that he's wearing a wig in this performance. We won't rip you. MEATLOAF was an amalgamation of different genres and styles. It is very theatrical, over the top, exuberant, satirical, farcical and irreverent. This was not the best performance of this song- which is sad - but, it doesn't diminish the genius of Meatloaf. His career was long. He sold over 100M albums so he struck a cord and created a devoted army. Try one more song of his befr you throw in the towel. Thanks for being a sport, giving it a whorl and keeping it real.❤

It isn't just Meat Loaf (two words, not one), his career would not have been so successful without Jim Steinman's amazing songs. Also "whirl" a verb, a spinning motion not "whorl" a noun, which is a spiral pattern.

First, thanks for yr reply to my comment.
2nd) I did know that "Meatloaf" was 2 words. I just put them together to compound the irony & compare an American staple of mid century American dinner/diner food w an American music staple. My bad. 3rd) Whirl can be a noun or a verb. 4) I used whorl in place of whirl, and thanks for assuming I didn't know the dif, because of it's visual aspect/aspic. And becuz I like playing with my words like some peeps play with their food/comestibles.
FINALLY, (really?) I meant no offense to the artist (MLA) by contracting his moniker. And so true about the songwriter (JS).

@@victoriah.2083 What irony exactly were you compounding? You certainly do mess with words (leaving out letters, incorrect spelling etc) which makes it difficult to determine what you do and don't know. By the way, whether you do or don't know ,aspic (a savoury jelly) doesn't go with aspect. Have a nice d, ay or day (I hope at least one of these is how you refer to the twenty four hour time period). Take care.

This is the opening of his concert in 2007 on Meat Loaf’s “ Three Bats Live” tour. Yes he has a wig on to match the style of hair he had back in 1977 when this song came out and thus the band and back up singers are all wearing costumes from that ‘70’s era to match the vibe of when this song was a big hit. Rest of the concert he takes off the wig and the band changes too Meat Loaf is “ Theatrical Rock” music 😎

Every meat loaf song is a story , and you happen to be given one of the hardest to interpret as a starter , although it is a great performance in its original. their a far better intro's into Meatloaf's style of music , Bat out of Hell a true rock legend of a song , as well as Two out of Three ain't Bad , followed by For Crying Out Loud . is a good starting place to understand Meatloaf and also Jim Steinman who wrote most meatloaf songs. i have been to many meatloaf concerts over the years and the ending after the actual song Paradise always changed. But if you want to see audience joining in then watch You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth. if you follow these few simple intros in to his songs you will want to explore more and become a die-hard fan, as the multi million selling album's are not wrong. but first impressions can be. thank you and i hope you give Meatloaf a chance. Oh and as a last thought after becoming a fan i would check out the Storytellers DVD . his life story with many songs and small audience first shown on VH1

His real name was Marvin Lee Aday. He got his nickname (which was legally changed) by his dad when he played football in High School.
He has many movie appearances over the years. Including but not limited to "Rocky Horror Picture Show", "Fight Club" and "Wayne's World".
Btw they were BOTH regretting their commitment to each other.
Sadly, we lost Jim and Meat within a few months of each other 😇😇
This song was written by the late Jim Steinman, he also played keyboard on this song.

@@MaddyReactions Meat Loaf was actually a _very_ capable opera singer! I am not kidding! There is a video on RUclips of him singing a duet with Pavarotti and he keeps right up with the master! Meat Loaf was a helden-tenor, very much in demand with opera companies because of the rarity of that voice type. An opera company offered him an understudy role for around $60,000 a year back in the late 1960s or early 1970s but he turned it down. That was a princely sum back then! Then he brought out "Bat Out of Hell" in 1977 and it sold over 40,000,000 copies! I am not personally a big Meat Loaf fan but this song in the original version is a classic. This song was a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor, based on 1970s dating culture.
The official video is a "live" performance style video which plays out the 3 acts much better, including the baseball play-by-play, used to metaphorically describe the make-out session (a large part of the humor).
But that track can be a bit much for the uninitiated, so I would recommend the following, which I think you will like much better (if these do not warm you up to Meat Loaf music then nothing will) :
    - Bat Out Of Hell (album version - no live shit)
    - I'd Do Anything For Live... But I Won't Do That (this is a 12 minute song, but the official video trims it down to around 5 or 7 minutes as a radio-friendly "single" edit - your call which you wanna do, but I always say, go album version for the first time).
    - Two Out Of Three Aint Bad
    - For Crying Out Loud
    - Dead Ringer (duet with Cher)
    - I'd Lie For You And That's The Truth

Like others have said, a poor version.
But the song itself is a classic. It's a moral story. If you listen to the words, it is told from the present about a time in the past, where two teenagers are about to hook up in a car by the lake. They finally do when the boy agrees to "love her forever". They (implied) then get married and live together, but grow apart until they finally can't stand each other. But he stands by the vow he made to never leave her.
It's a cautionary tale. Quick decisions made with the aid of hormones could see you regretting it the rest of your life.
The song was extremely popular in the 70s and 80s. First time I heard it and actually listened to the words was at my brother's wedding reception, believe it or not. I'm always taken by the words to a song, and not so much by the music and I wondered what the blue blazes the DJ was thinking. But the wedding couple had asked for it and everyone sang along, the men taking Boy's part and the women taking Girl's part -- which, apparently, was a thing.

You really need to see the official music video because it is so much better because they can’t edit and do the things they can do in a produced music video. If you really want to see his depth of talent and see his training as an opera player you should really watch the official music videos for his song I will do anything for love, and you will see his training. All his shows are more of a production that they are concerts. Just give him a chance and check out his other music because he really is a great story teller when it’s comes to his music.

When you talk Meat Loaf, you have to acknowledge Jim Steinman - the songwriter behind the entire Bat Out Of Hell album, and other throughout the Meat Loaf odyssey.
The musical styles can change slightly to greatly from album to album, solidifying Meat Loaf as defying genre categorization. All are basically rock on some level or another, but Midnight At The Lost & Found has more of a country-rock sound, while the follow-up Bad Attitude has a much heavier almost "metal" vibe.
1977 - Bat Out Of Hell (all songs by Jim Steinman)
1981 - Bad For Good (Jim Steinman album, released while Meat recovered from an accident - 8 of the songs here are reprised on future Meat Loaf albums)
1981 - Dead Ringer (all songs by Jim Steinman) (I consider this and Jim Steinman's solo album BFG to be two halves of a whole project)
1983 - Midnight At The Lost & Found
1984 - Bad Attitude (only 2 songs by Steinman, featuring 1 track from Bad For Good)
    1986 - Blind Before I Stop
1993 - Bat Out Of Hell II : Back Into Hell (all songs by Jim Steinman, featuring 3 tracks from Bad For Good)
1995 - Welcome To The Neighborhood (only 2 songs by Jim Steinman, featuring 1 track from Bad For Good)
2003 - Couldn't Have Said It Better (some songs co-written by Jim Steinman with Don Black and Andrew Lloyd Webber)
2006 - Bat Out Of Hell III : The Monster Is Loose (most songs by Jim Steinman, featuring 3 tracks from Bad For Good)
2010 - Hang Cool Teddy Bear
    2011 - Hell In A Handbasket
2016 - Braver Than We Are (all songs by Jim Steinman, with some co-writing collaborations)
And that's it. As of 2021 and 2022, Jim Steinman passed away (April 19), followed by Meat Loaf the following year (January 20).
The 3 Bat Out Of Hell albums are collectively referred to as a trilogy, but are NOT concept albums where each song tells a specific part of a story arc.
Meat has suggested if the songs do tell any kind of story, it is one that is up to the listener to discern.
Bat Out Of Hell was made into a musical production which ran from 2017 to 2020.

Meatloaf did appear in Rocky Horror. I’m gonna say she’s dressed like a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader because they were performing in Dallas. But this was in his later years. He sounded much better in his earlier years. That ended was not the original ending to that song. I’m not happy how this version ended.

This song is indeed not a typical rock song. It's what is called a "suite", I believe...
Many of the more epic songs in Meat Loaf's catalog are broken down into specific "chapters" such as this one.
Paradise By The Dashboard Light : I. Paradise / II. Let Me Sleep On It / III. Praying For The End Of Time

To get a better Perspective/Context to appreciate Meatloaf, check out the "Official Videos" (even if not filming a reation, cause others have mentioned, some of the Official Videos get blocked) for: "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights," "Bat Out of Hell," "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad," "I would do Anything for Love," He also sang the National Anthem at the 1994 MLB (Major League Baseball) ASG (All Star Game) that I put up there with Whitney Houston's 1991 Super-Bowl and Chris Stapleton's 2023 Super-Bowl performances......

The difinitive video for this is on the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test in the 70's. This was a pale imitation of how good he was back then. Not surprised you didn't like it. The girl was clearly a Broadway performer on this version though and was great!

@@MaddyReactions The video is a promotional video for the Bat Out of Hell album. Ellen Foley recorded her vocals separately, so it was easy for them to use in the video. Meatloaf made a deal to show the video before every showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which he was in. There is also a great video of Ellen and Karla singing together on RUclips, "I'm So Happy To Be Here". Karla sang the vocals on tour but for the video, Ellen's vocals were just so spectacular, they had to use them.

Was a big hit when i was maybe 14-15 and constantly played on every party here in germany at that time.
However this version is a bit strange in case of how he sings her, not sure if its just his age or had some other reason 🤔
This songs is also really a bit different music wise, to get a better impresson of the typical Meat Load/Jim Steinman sound check out for example " I'd do Anything for love"
Btw.: in the end that sound is really more the sound of Jim Steinman since you will recognice it also if you listen for example to Bonnie Tylers "Total Eclipse of the Heart" or "Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young " from the Move Streets of Fire.

Poor Maddy - someone set her up for something she was not ready for...
    1. You should have done the official video cos: 1. it's much better, and 2. this live performance lame - Meat still sounds okay, but this performance doesn't do the song justice.
    2. Yes, it's definitely a wig - his hair actually looked like that back in the 70s, and there's some kind of re-enactment of the era going on here.
    3. Haha, I agree, there's some kind of holiday vibe going on here (I only heard it once you mentioned it)...
8:35 - THIS is a prime example of why I always discourage people from diving right in to live performances of songs they've never heard before ; there is often some context needed to appreciate and understand what the hell the live version is doing. What is happening here, is they are re-enacting the video. This would have been less of a confusing shock had someone provided you with a link to the original song and video.
I would not blamed you if you bailed on this video, lol. This was NOT a good example of Meat Loaf music or even live performances.
Don't judge Meat Loaf by this weak performance.
Check out the album version/video and I am sure you'll get context and a better experience.

I have to agree with you. Not the best representation of his abilities. Meatloaf's background was in musical theatre appearing in Hair and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He actually had an incredible voice but unfortunately, while undergoing throat surgery, his vocal cords were nicked and his voice was never close to being the same. Find the original video with Karla DeVito as his "date".

I still have both albums on vinyl.

you need to hear the original album version ,this is not a good version for this, my ears are telling me that this is not the same voice, he was in the rocky horror btw.. meatloafs entire career was a theatrical performance and generally very well produced .. being a special effects lighting designer a dream would have been to do his show ,, it was sad when i heard he was gone.. his voice was off in this video and i belive the lady in the .. i would recommend listening to 2 out of 3 ain't bad.. his 1st hit song .. hot summer nights and for crying out loud all are on the bat out of hell album.. bat out of hell is a classic and if you imagine a little bit you can hear the potential for the theatrical .. a second connection would be all revved up with no place to go. and if you go over his albums you will notice he continues the story over the years .. and i'll mention that much of his success was due to his production being done by jim steinman.. i figured this out from a movie i watched .. and there was a song done by a woman and it clicked in my mind .. in the credits the song was produced by steinman .. sorry i'm getting carried away
