Paradise by the Dashboard Light" is a song written by Jim Steinman. It was released in 1977 on the album Bat Out of Hell, with vocals by the American musician Meat Loaf alongside Ellen Foley. An uncommonly long song for a single, it has become a staple of classic rock radio[3][4] and has been described as the "greatest rock duet".

With this and all meatloaf songs the fact they had the lyrics pulled up really helps the reactors follow the story, when I heard it at 18 when it came out I knew exactly what it meant.

To me, this was a warning video. To pay attention to your body and do not let hormones direct your life. See how fast it fell apart. Not saying the path followed was wrong, it just always tends to produce less than adequate beginnings to a positive long time relationship. I was a teenager in the sixties and certainly followed my hormones but never created the anguish portrayed here. Loved it. 👏👏👍

I watched this video in real-time when it came out 30-40 years ago. I've watched a dozen reactions to it. What EVERY reactor misses is the underlying message parents of teenagers should appreciate: Males should NOT make commitments they don't want to make just to get sex and females should NOT weaponize sex just to get commitments the male doesn't want to make. It'll NEVER turn out well.

A lot of reactors seem shocked when they get to the line "and now I'm praying for the end of time" because they forget the whole song is told as a flashback. They married when they were young, possibly 17-18 and now they've been stuck together for life. I always thought the old TV show, Married With Children was a perfect companion for this song. :)

This song was released in 1977, but the 'story' begins about 1959-60. You can tell this from the opening lyrics: 'I remember as if it only happened yesterday.' He's giving you a back story from the past, when he and the girl were still only 17. You can also tell from the style of music; the story is told in classic early rock and roll.
'Paradise' revealed in the dark by the dashboard light is her beautiful nakedness.
Something that you may not be aware of is the baseball game has a triple meaning:
    1. The baseball game is being broadcast over the car radio, so is playing in the background.
    2. In the 1950s & 60s, teenaged boys and young men used baseball to help them 'last' with their dates. They would visualize a game being played or run baseball statistics to avoid being overcome by their lust.
    3. Finally, the stages of lovemaking represented in baseball terms, which in this song has the game describing the boy's progress with the girl.
Just before 'sliding into home', the girl stops the fellow to make demands while he's at a 'disadvantage' and not able to think very clearly. And in 1960ish America, a girl who loses her virginity before marriage gets a reputation and likely never marries. She could also end up with a child and her family toss her out (sex education and birth control was largely unknown to 'nice' girls, and the only birth control available to the unmarried was condoms). The girl in the song is trying to secure the deal before potentially ruining her life.
On the boy's side, he's all worked up and didn't plan on getting engaged, His request to 'let me sleep on it' has two meanings:
    1. He wants to put off a serious decision, maybe avoid having to commit at all; this is obvious.
    2. He's still worked up and needs release, so he wants to 'sleep on IT.'
In other words, he wants her to submit and finish what they started.
His first verse is sweet, romantic, respectful, enticing.
His second verse is demanding, urgent, desperate, highly-frustrated as the urges in him get more intense.
The shorter back and forth is his losing control, until he relents and promises to love and marry her.
Then the song shifts back to the present, 18 years later in 1977. The couple are now in their mid-thirties, he honored his vow, but the nature of their marriage's beginning left it poisoned and the two will never be happy together. A cautionary tale.

We used to use the baseball analogy in high school back in the 1960s when we told others how far we got with a girl on a date. First base was making out. Second base was getting at her breasts. The baseball announcer said that Meat Loaf slid into second base head first. Third base was feeling her up down below. A home run was full penetration. He was sliding into home plate when she said "STOP RIGHT THERE!" He honored his vow to marry her and this song was reminiscing years later about the first time they had full sex and how they feel about each other now.

When him and his friend heard of the shooting they started to drive to Parkland Hospital only to be stopped and a Secret Service agent commandeered their vehicle. Also Meatloaf was discovered as a singer on pure luck. He was working as a parking attendant and a friend got him to audition for a show. He did and the rest was history. The man was so talented and had amazing stories. Top record sales . Sold out Arenas but a lot of people didn’t know how success he was. It's not that he was saying whatever it took to get laid, really. The lyrics give some clues to the thought process, and how it all played out.
For example, "I'll never forget my promise, or break my vows" and "It was long ago, and far away".
The beginning of song starts off with some 50's era rock'n'roll vibes, and they are singing past-tense, and Meat Loaf sings about the guys in school wishing that they were in his place, that night. So, they are looking back to being in high school, back in the 50's. She kept bugging him about it, and finally he figured, "Hell, I like her well enough, I can see her with me for the rest of my life; how bad can it be? "
This song was released in '77, so now present-tense would be 20-some odd years later.
They became an item that night, and they married straight out of high school. A couple of decades later, they're sick of each other, but are unwilling to break the promises made that night, or their wedding vows, so they pray for time to end, so that the vows are fulfilled.
Anyone married would be familiar with these rough patches. When you work through them, you come out the other side stronger and happier as a couple, usually.
Shame ol' Meat Loaf passed. I wonder if anyone ever asked him about the fate of the Paradise couple. Personally, I like to think that they worked it out, and are a happily married couple of 60+ years.
As a side note, I'm amused that the younger generations have difficulty trying to figure out what the hell "Paradise By The Dashboard Lights " means. I guess teenagers aren't driving to secluded spots for special play time, anymore.

One correction to your analysis, they both sing "So now I'm praying for the end of time...." They are both fed up with one another, not just him with her.
Also, and this is something a lot of first time listeners miss, they sing "I'll never break my promise or forget my vow" so it's not like he just told her what she wanted to hear in order to get into her pants and then dumped her the next morning or something, he actually carried through and married her.... only for them both to come to regret it.

Top-notch first class ROCK-OPERA. Meatloaf and especially the fellow that represented him in the beginning had a hard time getting him recorded because nobody knew where they categorize his music they claim it was not Rock, recorded or played on the radio I can't remember now it's been so long. Anyway he finally got recorded finally got his music on the radio and his music finally took off. March 2023 thanks for this reaction one year later seeing the lyrics helps a lot to understand the song.

I found it funny when Meat Loaf first said "let me sleep on it," she turned to face the audience and mouthed the question "SLEEP ON IT????" Also, at her first "YES OR NO," when he continued to say "Let me sleep on it," she turned her back to him, I couldn't tell if she actually mouthed a naughty word or two.
The best way to explain the show as a "Rock-opera."

RIP Meatloaf. He was a great entertainer and he put on a really fun show the one time I saw him live in the 80's. This song is off his first album Bat Out Of Hell, which sold an amazing number of copies, but it's interesting how it came to be recorded. Meatloaf became friends with Jim Steinman (pianist and composer of all the songs on the album) and they decided to record an album. They brought the material to multiple record companies over the course of many months, but they were rejected by every one, with the most common complaint being that the songs were too "theatrical" and didn't have the normal structure of pop songs. They ultimately got in touch with musician/producer Todd Rundgren who agreed to produce the album, saying "I've got to do this album. It's so out there"! They had told Rundgren that they were signed to RCA Records (which they weren't) and when he found out they were not signed to any label, he ended up paying to record the album. When the album was complete, they took it to various labels and were finally able to sign with a subsidiary of Epic records...and the rest is history!
