It is not the number of native or second language speakers that one should feel proud of once a language is free from danger of extinction, it is the quality of culture of the speakers which one shiuld feel proud of.
On that criteria English remains undisputed front runner one should really be proud of speaking
With more and more language speakers of Hindi, Bengali, Urdu & Arabic the culture and quality of members have taken a beating.

China has 1.4 billion people but it does not mean all of them can speak Chinese or Mandarin. Most Taiwanese can speak Mandarin but a lot Hong Kongers cannot speak Mandarin because their mother tongue and common language is Cantonese. If Chinese is ranked the most spoken language, it is not an international language. If you visit Asia, besides China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, you can't use Chinese to communicate with the immigration and customs officers. You still need to use English at the restaurants, shops, tourist spots and night markets. Even in Thailand, which has 9 million ethnic Chinese, you can't speak to them in Chinese because they speak Thai. And those who can speak their mother tongue, they speak Teochew. Chinese Mandarin and Chinese Teochew are like German and French

Come on! This is misleading. Knowing a language and speaking it are two different things. In Africa probably English is spoken by only about 10% of the populations of former British colonies. Mostly the educated elites. But the masses still speak local indigenous languages. Indeed the most spoken language in Nigeria is not English but Hausa (50m native speakers + 50m as a lingua franca). In East Africa it is Swahili. In South Africa, Zulu. Even the elites speak it badly. To say that an official language is necessarily a "most spoken" language is as absurd as saying in 1150 Norman French was the most spoken language in England. Or that Latin was the most spoken language in Europe in 1720.

@winstonpoole9906 Not true. Look at these former UK colonies: In India 11%; Bangladesh 12%; & South Africa 31%. Outside the Commonwealth: Mexico 13%; Agentina 7%; Brazil 5%; Russia 5%; China 1%. Most of the Chinese engineers building infrastructure around the world hardly speak English; only the project managers do. I learned German in school, but can hardly speak it. Same here.

It will be appreciated if the language distributions in the world may be shown as First language (Mother tongue) and Secondary language speakers. There are people who speak many languages apart from their mother tongue. It is not known if such statistics are maintained at all. Humans in the age group of 2-5 yrs living in society speaking different languages pick up those languages as their mother tongue. But if one wants to learn a language at advanced age, they can learn written language but does not show expertise to get the spoken language of native tongue. But in case of Mandarin, Japanese, Korean etc. it is equally difficult to pick up their written languages even living with them.
