Sonja's main squeeze at the college is Richard Greene, an Englishman playing American who was being built up as a light leading man on Robert Taylor/Don Ameche lines. World War Two interrupted his movie career, but Americans warmed to him almost 20 years later as Robin Hood in the first British television series exported successfully to US prime time.
What a nice movie ! They sure can't put out like this no more ! The classic are the greatest , men were men ,and Ladies were Ladies ! Awesome part of history !

A different generation and a different america and you can see it in this wonderful movie. These people suffered thorough a great depression and a world war in their near future. Now its 20 dollars to see a movie but 40 dollars for the buttered popcorn.
I have several black & White glossy pictures 8"x10" of Sonja Henie an Cesar Romero an Tyrone Power an other Actors. That Sonja gave me back in 1955. I have made color display boards 4'x4' an gave some of them to my past students. Still have all the originals. They are awesome.
Romero always wore his suits with extreme elegance. Notice his appearance while addressing his father's colleagues and recommending a novel way to advertise a product. That elegance transferred into a fluid dance motion equal to that of Astaire and Jack Buchanan.
Love the transition from the Cisco Kid to a wacky New Yorker (I started with Cesar Romero's earliest films available on RUclips). Romero, Heinie, Greene, Greenwood and Treacher all adorable. And the horse-drawn taxicab. THANKS!

If I'm not mistaken, Romero also did film work in England. Whatever. What I remember him best for is his dancing. Very elegant, suave, and smooth. The Fred Astaire of Latin America.
Buddy Ebsen was an amazing dancer....he was to be the Tin Man in Wizard of Oz but had a bad reaction to the paint.....check him out with Shirley Temple
$50,000 would be equal to a couple of millions now. Then again, I'm poor gal, 50 grand is nothing to sneeze at now. That's a cool department store to have an ice rink in it.
The screenplay's construction is weird. Cesar dominates the first reel, then vanishes for half an hour. We get only a glimpse of Sonja on the rink until halfway, delayed by an overlong extended bit from Billy Gilbert and a sappy hayride singalong. Henie fans must have been squirming with impatience.
Enjoyed this mindless College musical. While I know it's a Sonja Heine star vehicle....I just love that Joan...funny as hell in her loud Ozarak Hills way. Honeychile Wilder is mean as hell----what a Karen. Never made it in Hollywood but has a reputation as Cafe Society gladfly.
Joan Davis, as well as deadpan Virginia O'Brien (was she an influence on both Cher and Keely Smith?), was one of my all time favorite comediennes (I honestly believe, Abi, that only a woman can do comedy: Judy Holiday, Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance, Marie Dressler, Judy Canova -- I could go on). But back to Greenwood. I always looked for her as a kid when I plunked by my 15 cents for admission to my babysitter, the movies. I put "Sing to Your Senorita" in Favorites. Love the way she did it.

I love Greenwood, who steals every scene in every movie she's in. Did you know an excellent biography of her came out in 2007? You can find it on Amazon and Ebay, but if the prices are too high for you, see if your local library has an inter-library loan program that gets books from all over. You might have to pay for postage, but I guarantee you'll love the book.
A great skater does not necessarily mean a great actress. And this movie. I guess that people were easily pleased in 1938. And Gypsy Rose Lee doesn't even strip. Her acting ability reinforces the line from "Gypsy", "Hey Gyps! Show us your talent!"
Must have been strange making this movie. Caesar was Tyrone Power's Number One Guy his whole life and Sonja almost married Tyrone. Caesar was considered the best escort - and dancer, in the social life of Hollywood. But never, never, was he a "lady's man". Beautiful man nevertheless. Also a darned good actor.

i also remember many movies did have a level of cruelty post WW2 tht surprises the audience no matter what era, its strange that after a war that movies brought that into mainstream consciousness. ? , and you know onwards from the 50s Hollywont got depressing regardless things much less struggling much much less and life much much better!!! Here we can discuss and we can leave and edit our own libraries FREELY despite commercial pressure, no peer peeing does anyone have to be stuck with !
In the days of musicals this was very entertaining! I recognized some old faces that were young at the time.

Buddy Ebsen almost got the Tin man part a year later on "The Wizard of Oz".
Sonja Henie was the Ice skating champion for at least 14 or 15 championships, both in the USA and in Norway. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🕺🕺🕺🕺
