Hong Kong is set to open its first traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospital in 2025. Alternative medicine has had a steady stream of local supporters in the last century, but nowhere near the level seen of Western medicine in the former British colony. Misconceptions, lack of government support, as well as costs have both contributed to TCM’s stagnant popularity, while previous attempts to open a hospital were plagued by disagreements. A Covid-era government push, however, has led to more recent converts.

Why can't people just extract the chemical in TCM and just call it normal medicine?
It is a complicated mixture of a variety of things which is tailored to each patioent. I became a believer when I first arrived in Hong Kong. My daughter was often sick for 9 months of the year. She had pneumonia 4 times. She had a horrible deep cough that kept her up at night. She was getting weaker and sicker. A new friend noticed and immediately we went to a TCM doctor. To this day, I have no idea what he gave her but after drinking the concoction my daughter had a restful sleep that night. She recovered quickly after after that never was so sick again. After reading in Pub Med the efficacy of TCM, I try to stay away from Western Medicine.
The extraction is the problem.
Extraction increases the purity of the chemical compound. Such a pure compound is not necessarily beneficial to the body because it may be too potent. Too strong. The chemical compound is not bound up to some other thing.
Extraction is based on the assumption that the chemical compound alone works to treat X, Y, Z. In reality, it may be the combination of two or more compounds to create a certain effect on X, Y, Z.
The same is true for anthocyanins. They are antioxidants, but it is best to take them in the form of red, purple and blue fruits and vegetables.
So, in a way, Traditional Chinese Medicine is much more holistic than Western Medicine.
@@kiwifruitklthis is the real answer
Half of the things in TCM have no scientific base and is like "magic healing powder".
Because that would be replicating Western medicine, which uses a "magic hammer" approach. Forceful and potent, but one dimensional and can severely affect the body's biochemistry balance. This is why Western medicine always comes with a big warning list of side effects.
TCM utilizes multiple natural compounds in lower dosages over a longer period of time, so as not to upset the body, making it a more harmonious approach.
TCM is not evidenced based
@@jamesthorburn8118 TCM has been successfully used for longer than your country has been in existence. Come to think of it, longer than all anglo saxon countries combined. It doesn't cure ignorance though
@@JS-rm2wsAnd still doesn’t work.

@@user-rh6ru5oz2o TCM has been in use for longer than your country has been in existence.
i think TCM works for some people but not so much on some people. Over the years, i dont recall anytime it fixed my illness, but for my other family members, they work like wonder and magic. So it's really dependent how well the patients react to TCM
A lot has to do with you if you followed the doctors recommendations and if you told your doctor everything as our bodies interconnected
This is great news for HK.
The price of TCM drugs in my country is very expensive
HK should first start a medical research University on TCM. If done correctly, everything else should grow organically from there.
what are they gonna do? give you ginseng if you're having a heart attack 😂
Like allopathic medicine works all the time on every condition. Its just a bunch of antibiotics anyway.
TCM is only medicine that has been combined over and over in different ways until it kind of works on a patient. It obviously should be analyzed to ensure each ingredient is working as it should and will ensure the health of the patient
They are standard medicine, the only reason is the West and bankers control Hong Kong money.

Medicine from 1500's? Yeah id like to invest 1000000 pls
Actually, it's medicine that's lasted for thousands of years.....people would've stopped using it if it wasn't effective
This is something Sg can learn.
Just wonder how the Health Insurance works there ? They acknowledge and cover it too ?
They do it in the United States, so I am assuming insurance covers this in China.
@@alileevilyes it does.
I assumed TCM opened in Hong Kong, China which means technically patient covered with insurance but doubt Western companies would do the same coverage
@@alileevilNot all TCM covered in US especially in Mid West, Florida, Texas, South Dakota, North Dakota, Arizona, and Eastern seaboard as far I recalled.
@@alileevilwait.. The insurance cover it in the US but not in asia?.. That's so backward isn't it? especially to consider that insurance is mainly a "western thing" and TCM is from the east but the eastern itself don't recognize to cover it in the insurance

this is wonderful news. Why was TCM relegated to a secondary medicine for so long? When I was a kid, growing up in the UK, western medicine could not effectively treat nor cure my eczema. We found a TCM specialist here in Glasgow, and his treatments were effective at removing pretty much all of my eczema symptoms
why is it a secondary medicine? because nobody is going to run to the TCM hospital if there is a genuine emergency.
@@KJ_2020 emergency medicine and A&E is only one category of medicine. When you have eczema so bad it bleeds, A&E isn't where you go for help
Because the TCM that has been clinically proven to work is just called "medicine". It's how bear bile became UDCA and how sweet wormwood became DCA. The rest has been regarded as a "secondary medicine" because nobody has proven whether they're any better or worse than placebos.
Didn’t the Chinese swimmers blame TCM for their positive drug results.

You don't know how TCM works....
@@AlejandroPikoulasPlata and how it works? does it have rigorous drugs research and peer reviewed papers?
@@MudThought Trust me, dude
@@AlejandroPikoulasPlata yeah, and neither do the -quacks- TCM "practitioners"
@@AlejandroPikoulasPlata It doesn't matter "how" TCM works, because the stuff that has been proven to work (better than a placebo) is just called "medicine". For example, bear bile was developed into UDCA and sweet wormwood was developed into DCA.
6:19 This is the main point. Western medicine focus on the symptoms and after the treatment you are alone with the root causes of the symptoms.
😂That's definitely not true. What do you think western medicine is???
Not really. Lots of herbal supplements are also produced in the US. But they are more similar to Indian Aryuveda, middle eastern and some pre-colonial American herbalism than compared to Chinese traditional medicine. Things like Spirulina, Chlorella, Moringa, Turmeric, Flaxseeds, Chia seeds, Coconut and MCT oil, Apple Cider Vinegar, Chamomile tea, Peppermint tea, even essential oils etc...
@@johnsilver9338 Obviously the top post is talking about conventional western medicine.
Illness isn't caused by imbalances, cold /hot winds, or disruptions of energy flows. We've known this for over a century now
@@caitthecat tell me the truth genius 😂
I totally believe and support TCM treatment. Chinese herbs have No major bad side effects as compared to western drugs. TCM is organic and restorative!
would you also support marijuana stalls in HK for the same reason?
@@KJ_2020 Don’t be ridiculous!
@@MsOceanstar How is it ridiculous? Marijuana was one of the "herbs" used by by Emperor Shennong, the "father of TCM", some 4800 years ago.
As long as it doesn’t hurt the person or include critically, endangered plants and animals doesn’t involve the poaching Inhumane treatment and doesn’t trick people into showing out thousands of dollars do what you want when you can’t find other sources of help like the acupuncture I can go with that
China should just keep the knowledge a secret. No need to share them with other countries who doesn't understand, appreciate, or believe in the 1500 year wisdom behind Chinese medicine.
This stuff has already been spread around the world by Chinese immigrants 😂. You really think there is anything in Chinese culture that is still a secret that only China possesses in the year 2024? 🤣

Because it’s a sudo science that can’t prove that you can actually use it as an only cure.

So they have no proof that TCM works.
