- In this video, we take on the challenge of repairing a cast iron radiator using MIG welding with Silicon Bronze. Silicon Bronze has been shown to be almost as strong as unbroken cast iron, with exceptional elongation characteristics. Cast iron is known for its tricky nature, and unfortunately, not all repairs go as planned. Join us as we dive into the process, explore the difficulties, and learn from the mistakes that led to this repair failure. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced welder, this video offers valuable insights into the limitations and challenges of welding cast iron. Might as well try it’s already broken, thanks for another great video Brandon
Thats the way I see it too. I did a little research and saw folks talking about JB weld. No way would I ever try that. I can just see someone going out of town and returning to a flooded house after the JB Weld fails. It's good stuff but I wouldn't trust it on something this important
2 things, Brandon! That setup you came up with for introducing air into the radiator was brilliant! Second, thanks for always being willing to share the failures as well as the successes. It helps us learn, and reminds us that it's OK to fail sometimes, as long as you learn from it!
Thanks man I appreciate it.
Interesting for sure. Have a great weekend Brandon!
Thanks Earl, you as well!
I worked at a steel mill and we only had one old welder who would touch cast iron and he got the piece cherry red and stick welded it now that was about 45 years ago and it was still holding after 15 years good video
Thanks man! 👊 those ol' timers have a lot of knowledge
A+ for effort Brandon. Sometimes Chit Happens and you can't weld it for some unknown reason. Thanks for sharing with us, keep up the great videos and stay safe around there. Fred.
I appreciate it Fred. I felt pretty confident but as you said, you never know until you try
Hope for the best! It happens! Thanks for sharing! Brandon! 👌👍
Thanks for watching Rudy!
That's a neat welder , thank you for the repair video will have to use some of the info eventually.
Glad to help thanks!
Beyond comprehension how you manage to test the exact leaks, welding it with CUSI3(?). In the old days we repaired leaking radiaters from around 1920 with Autogene/oxygene flame and fosforcopper. But those were of steel. Yours is far way difficult to repair because of all the variables. It's a fact that 50% can be repaired. Most respect I have is the fact that you show it as it is. We all had those failures. Only thing you can do is to do your outmost. Looks like you put all your effort in it Brandon. Only deep and deep respect. Thanks for the useful info and greetz from holland. Stay healthy, safe and God blessed. Marcel Knippers😃😇👌💪
I appreciate that Marcel. I've had the best luck with nickle but more so with silicon bronze. I felt pretty confident i could fix it but after doing a little research it appears some were cast with white iron making it not repairable. I did my best but sometimes that's all we can do. I hope you had a great weekend!
Excellent try though give you a 5 star for trying Thank you
I appreciate that! Thank you!
Win some or lose some!! What more to say??? At least you tried!! Since I never tig weld…. Thinking maybe tig be more efficient?? Like few reviews says... Good try!!
I was reading on comments…. White cast iron? That's kinda new but makes sense… I have 1890 cast iron stove needs corner welded.. Any suggestions? How fix broken corners??
Thanks man! For a stove, I would use some nickle rod and stick weld it. Give it a good preheat and then when your done bury it in sand
Good try, Brandon! Great video, showing challenges and how to deal with them!
Thanks! I hate when things don't work out. The good days far outweigh the bad ones so I can handle that :) cast iron can be tricky
I learned something new about welding cast iron, thanks Brandon 👍😁
Thanks Dave!
Excellent job, when I was doing head's in Alice Springs, we used same technique to check, for cracks in the head, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
Thanks Donald I appreciate it!
Hey Brandon, thanks for the educative video, I thought I no a lot but learned something new today. I missed you a while and I'm happy you're back ( could be, I looked not good enough ha ha), have a nice weekend and greetings.
Thanks Christian I appreciate it! Have a great weekend man!
Nice job
Thanks!
MM77 Approved 👍🏼👍🏼
Right on! Thanks!
Now I'll be saving my inner tubes 😊
I was racking my brain trying to figure out how i was going to test it.
What about silver soldering? Brazing?
I don't know if that would have worked. I don't think white cast can be welded with anything but I will have to look into it because I'm not positive
Have you tried welding with, let's say, 7018 and copper wire (a generous amount) as additive? So either wrapping copper wire around the electrode or just dipping it into the weld pool.
I think I tried it years ago but I don't think I had good results.
good video could have been cast to thin or all the rhinks you said it was over a hunderd years old went thru a lot of heat cylces take care, be safe and well.
Thanks 👍
You gave it a good try and it is too bad the metal did not bond. Would stick have worked better??? I remember you doing a cast iron skillet with stick, I think. Better luck next time, Brandon!!!
Stick works great on cast but this was white cast iron and its not weldable. I'm not sure what makes white cast different from gray other than weldability, but I should have known when working it with the rotary burr. It looked light gray, so I was hopeful it would work. Hopefully the owner can locate a new end piece or a new radiator
@@BrandonLund White cast? Never heard the term but I just looked it up and it is really a conglomerate of different metals (cheap ones). Wow, learn something new every day.
I just got the email from yes welder for this machine to prepay
So far it seems pretty sweet, especially for the price! It seems like a lot of machine! I plan to do some testing on it and verify the output.
That welder looks pretty intuitive. Will need to protect that screen from spray
Thanks. Yah it's huge. Its a lot of screen to catch the sparks!
👍
Thank you!
If it were me , I would have shortened the bolts and got by with one less slice of radiator ,,,
That would work for the center sections, but the ends have legs cast into them.
@@BrandonLund typical , and of course the centre sections never leak ,,, it is just how life goes ... lol
I would have tried it the old way with oxy/acetylene and brass brazing rod but, that has failed before also. 🫤 That new Yes welder looks very interesting! 🤔Good show,Brandon.
Thanks man! Once I looked into the cost of a new radiator this size, it probably wouldn't have been worth it to the customer for me to try. I watch a lot of "pakastani" videos and they throw the entire part in home made charcoal and weld it while it's glowing bright red. I might have to try this at some point. It probably works great for not cracking.
@@BrandonLund Maybe so but the cooling of dissimilar metals can have you pulling your hair. I also am amazed at the resourcefulness of 3rd world nations. Good to know if all goes crazy and the brown stuff hits the fan. 👍🫤
