I always get itchy to go and make art when I watch your videos, sometimes I don’t make it through without picking up my sketch book. I’m in bed watching tonight and I’m out of spoons so I’ll watch again in the morning. Gorgeous books, I managed not to pop to Amazon this time 😂
You've got more willpower than I have lol 😄🤭 soon as Sandi's video is finished I'm on to Google to search for all of these delicious art books Sandi features hahaha 😄❤
I was inspired by Emily Powell to hang my abstract acrylics (painted on butcher paper) along the wooden fence in my yard. I have two I am getting ready to put ON my house. Sure, the muggy weather in South Carolina eventually takes them, but what joy! I'll just paint more! Thank you, Sandi. I am looking forward to artists reviewing YOUR artbooks. You art is powerful!
nobody elses' work gets me fired up like yours! i just graduated college and im so inspired by your work to paint up a storm this summer!!! wishing you the best
Books like this are just such juicy feasts for the eyes. Also, big thank you for sharing tips with us. It doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated that we get these theory lessons for free. ❤️ Thanks for being so generous!
If I were to recommend an art book, it would probably be "The Group of Seven and Tom Thompson," it has an image of a fall landscape with a bright blue sky on the cover. It covers this historic group of Canadian artists who worked primarily with landscape imagery. The range of how this group of seven artists all interpreted landscape is fascinating and I reach for this book often.
Sandi! Your paintings (all of them, all your varied styles, portraits, landscapes and still lifes) are soooo inspiring! Thank you for sharing bits of your artist life! ❤️
The most invaluable thing about your channel for me is hearing how positively you talk about your own work. Even if it's something you don't particularly like you don't trash it but find something redeeming about it. Your sketchbook swatching pages made me wonder if you've seen the new book, "Color Charts: a History" by Anne Varichon? The history of colour in paint and prints and textiles etc. A huge book! Could be used as a small table itself never mind putting it on one! $69 CDN.
Sandi, Sandi, Sandi ! When I saw the topic of this video, I had to stop and get a cup of coffee! ☕ Folk Art - I never get tired of it ❤ Currently enjoying 1. American contemporary artist. Shara Hughes. There are several books. (colorful, markings, texture, forest settings, Intuitive & doesn't premix her paints ) I think you would like Shara. 2. Ludwig Bermelmans, best known as the illustrator of the Madeline picture books, but his other artwork is something to behold. Viewing is hard to track down. Google Images. My local library had volumes on his life & art. So charming. Mostly, from his life in France, 1940s - 1950s. 3. Never get tired of David Hockney 's "Spring Cannot Be Canceled" 4. Oceanic Art ! For those who currently cannot fund book buying at the moment, do visit the thrift stores & charity book sales. And, visit your local libraries. You'll be amazed what you will discover. So many old gems waiting for you💕 As always, enjoyed your sketchbook tours. The birds w/ flora & plants with dark background - stunning. The Geese 🤗 Sandi, thank you for all you do. Please know you are much appreciated. 💕 I must stop now, as I just feel like painting. 🙋♀️
Emma's own sketchbook 13:51 book is much better regarding how the works are shown than what they did to the sketches in Martin Salisbury's collection of illustrators' sketchbooks. Here the images are big and clear, really like it. I wish I could order it, I am sure there are some gems we haven't seen at this scale. Sandi, amazing overview, you reopened drawing to me. I will be grateful to you forever
I love books, especially art books and your art book haul is just wonderful, a real treat❤️ And your sketchbook tours are always super inspiring, such wonderful work……..I have soft spot for your birds, especially your owls🦉😍 As always, thank you for sharing🙏🏼
A new favorite of mine is a book/exhibit catalog called “Simple Pleasures: The Art of Doris Lee.” Her work is very folk-y and charming - often landscapes. In some ways her work reminds me of yours Sandi! The book really shows her evolution as an artist. Some of favorites pieces are more towards the end of her career when she melded that with abstraction.
Thank you so much Sandi! I really respond to your paintings and the colors you use. I’m temporarily away from my studio and unable to paint…this has stirred me up and I’m going to use my alcohol markers and see what comes out. Thank you!
Just like everyone else on here, now I want to mark make and paint. Thank you for showing your book haul and your sketchbook flip through. You inspire me.
I have an incredible library of art and folio books but I haven't bought any for a long time. You made me go back to my wish lists and see what is there. I think if there is an art book or folio book that you are in love with you need to buy it IMMEDIATELY. They soon go out of print, never to be available again, except in the second hand market. I was a keen book buyer back in my youth. Some of the books I bought back then are now worth $1200 and up. They still remain a source of inspiration to me.
@@sandihester Two of the most valuable books I own are on medieval manuscripts. They were both published in the late 1980s. What's fascinating is that since then there has not been another broadly comprehensive book on the subject published (I mean a folio style book with tons of gorgeous images).
I’ve just bought Mark Hearld’s workbook after getting recommandation, and it’s amazing. I think you will like it as well. He’s an English artist who does a lots of collage, animals from.the farm, lino, illustrations…. His work make me think of yours and Emma Carlisle. Especially the owls 🦉 😊
Wonderful, Sandi - thank you! Looking through your sketchbooks is always super inspiring! Regarding the art books I found the folk art especially interesting , and it made me think that what’s really beautiful about this kind of art is it’s inclusiveness, it feels unique & universal at the same time, very welcoming … ❤
Congratulations on this incredible sketchbook! It is a wonderful example not just of your journey as an artist but of the diversity and depth of skill your paintings have. There’s so much here to love. I particularly think the portraits of Trixie are outstanding and I hope you include them when you eventually make a book of your work (which I am waiting to buy…) ❤
Love this video! Thank you for taking us along on the delightful book & sketchbook tour! It’s a long weekend and I’m so ready to just create. I love poring over any books that feature Tom Thomson & the Group of Seven. Also looking at getting myself an Andre Derain book because I just love his work (and all of Fauvism, really). 😊
Great video as always and so inspiring! I have a trip planned to the used book store (McKays) tomorrow. I’ve had good luck finding art books there and bird books for reference. I’m learning so much from you about mixed media, layering, and just experimenting with the “what if’s”. You speak my language! Especially your sense of humor. Thank you for what you do. I’m sure it’s a lot of work 🤗
Your art inspiration is contagious-especially wowed by those dreamy pastel landscapes, that last layered page, and that tree painting you felt went terribly wrong 😂 for me, it was all kinds of right!
Kicked off the property.....lol.....Sandi you are so funny and I don't think you realize it.....God bless you girl....I just love your outspokenness and dry wit!!!
Emma is definitely one of my top favorite artists! Her sketchbooks are a work of art, I own two and the one mentioned here sold out but I think she said she was looking to reprint it (fingers crossed). David Hockneys books are also amazing and I’d recommend those. And any of Beatrice Alemagna’s children books-we own most and my children love the stories/I adore the art.

Thank you, Sandy! I ran across the abstract book by Amber Creswell Bell last weekend and immediately bought it because of your preview the week prior. Loving it. My edition is titled Abstract Painting, I can see it's the same artists as you flipped through the book. I am enjoying that each artist speaks a bit about what abstraction means for them. I found that exact American folk art book at my thrift store, but rarely open it, you've inspired me to whip it out, thank you !!

I really liked how your work looked on the white pages. I generally prefer white to cream - colours are fresher and paintings seem to have more life.
