- It’s a British classic, but James May reckons he can up the ante! In his mission to infuse absolutely every dish with his gin, has he gone too far with gin fish and chips?

If I travel to Swallowcliffe, enter the Royal Oak, and sit down for a meal, will I be able to order Gin-Battered Beer?
It might be doable if the beer was somehow gelatinised and then battered, but then you're into gastro chemical tomfoolery .
@@mister_woot "Gastro-chemical tomfoolery" might just be the greatest thing I've heard in a while.
I‘d be down for some Gin-Battered Beer
@@Riley_Mundt It sounds like something James May would say.
@@mister_woot that was poetic.
Only James May would ever dare to try and improve the British national treasure and if anyone could actually succeed it's him
Next up: Sheperd's pie with gin in it.
@@lonelystrategos Black pudding with gin in it.
you're saying in british cuisine there is no room for improvement?
We live in the New England and enjoy James Gin in regular and navy strength, it's lovely on it's own or mixed. Would love to try the gin fish and chips, may we sugest you soak the fish in the gin so it retains the flavor during frying. Cheers!
@@Thisandthat8908 He's pretty clearly talking about Fish and Chips, not All British cuisine.
Next episode has gotta be: Can James May improve a giant block of cheese with gin? Looking forward to that!
Time to drunkify the meme.
Gin ice cream
I'd like to see a how many pallets of gin can James ship to chris without people rioting in my village. I may get the drone out for that.
Cheese.
Swiss cheese, will soak it right up. Place in deep container.
In a word: YAAAAAAAAS! 🤣
Nice to see Lucy still part of the crew.
Well now that James has put it into the universe someone in the southern U.S. is gonna find a way to gin batter beer and deep fry it. Cant wait for that.
Or New England!
I'd put the challenge to the Scots myself
Except they'll substitute the gin with moonshine.
@@lonelystrategos shine battered beer. Yes. Get some deep fried vanilla ice cream with it too.
Yes we will.
I miss seeing Lucy!!!! James & Lucy are a great duo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Has this channel become a James May Gin commercial channel?
Just love when James calls himself, Jim.
Who else is here for the taglines James comes up with for goods and services near and dear to his heart? Never thought there would come a line to replace, "Lurpak spreadable butter invented in 1901"
1903 1904 hahhah
The way the chef sprinkles the salt on the chips whilst flipping them in the bowl should be on a wall in an art gallery
What Next?
James May Try’s Solving The Economic Crisis With Alcohol!
Well, that's a better solution than any politician come up since human history began
I had the Fish & Chips at The Royal Oak a week ago ( no Gin one available ) the food was great and the staff very friendly. Highly recommend a visit
What ???? Scandal
I like how transparent James is about his products
Probably filmed last year. It’s a shame they don’t upload these more regularly. Say once a week or so.
Yea this is from almost a year ago. That chef is now my head chef at a different place! Haha
@@thisissmo8769 wonder why he left Swallowcliffe?
I had some Irish whiskey left over from a party...I discovered that it's great to use for battered scampi.
What's leftover whiskey? ;)
@@jonesy2112 🤣🤣She's doing it wrong!!
I love whoever boosted the gain everytime he says BEER BATTERED FISH AND CHIPS in the intro
Well, if success is measured by the mutedness of the taster’s reaction, this one is a winner!
Apparently I need new glasses. I read your word "mutedness" as "mindlessness." Never mind. Works either way.
He's a Yorkshireman, he's never going to go "WOWZERS that is the BEST thing EVER". If a Yorkshireman says "Yeah, 'salright", that's high praise indeed.
That Gin infused Tempura idea would fly high in Tokyo, I think.
Would love to come to The Royal Oak, but I've got no idea which A road it's near.
Alternate title "Can James May continue to shill his gin?"
Only James could make an ad to any capacity seem so effortless and enjoyable, I'll be sure to pop by when I'm in the area
My mom always told me a story where she was making fish and chips, my uncle poured beer in her batter telling her it tastes better. She was livid with him because thats all the ingredients for batter she had so she made the fish anyways. She swore me to secrecy because it did taste better, the best FnC she ever made but she was so angry at my uncle she refused to tell him.
Very Toxic woman....
@@gabrielhowardMKE very typical woman, doesnt make u wrong tho...
what a surprise, a woman being petty about her brother or petty about anyone for that matter
Love the misogyny going on here
@@username60737 it's lovely, innit username?
I ordered one of each. They are coming to Atlanta Georgia. Can't wait to try them.
hooray, Lucy is back!
Holy moly, this fish and chips looks really nice. Unfortunately, I'm not from t'UK so I don't think I'll be able to drop in.
Same. We ordered the best fish and chips local to us, and were happy
The most unbelievable thing just happened!!! I just bumped into James May near Blackfriars Bridge. Had a quick chat with him, lovely man and humble.
Thanks James for the selfie too. 😊
Nice to see Lucy back. And yes, more food videos please.
I just reread the hidden message James May wrote in Autocar, it's absolutely funny
I really miss them in Top gear ⚙️
Although insanely expensive to import into Australia, it is an incredibly tasty gin that drinks well as a gin and tonic.
How much did it cost you mate 😅
"Just wait a couple of seconds, do not get this slightly drying and stringent gin finish to the flesh of the fish?" Idk why but that sentence is just so funny
I'm a car fan but I love this kind of content more please more
1:47 "Flood the cowling!"
I'd definitely try a whiskey batter soon... The smokey taste of the whiskey diffused in the cod could get very nice
I LOVE this idea!! Please reply to report in on results, genuinely interested! Cheers!
That tune seems fitting for James May, it's great. The video itself is nice too, thanks!
I cannot wait to get my James Gin here in Indiana USA I ordered a couple hours ago. Very much looking forward to it. Also very happy to see Lucy again, I miss Food Tribe so much with her and Rachel. I hope Rachel will be back, she was so awesome on Food Tribe.
James is my favourite ginfluencer
Been to your pub and it’s fantastic.
Oh no!!!! Poncey southern smashed up peas. If I ever go there for fish and chips remind me to take along a portion of my own marrowfat mushy peas. I suppose it could have been worse - southern skin-on fish.
You could subtlely marinade the fish in gin and lemon before the battering.
Nothing beats a piece of Cod and chips.
I do like using gin (well, the proportions of a Gibson cocktail w/scallions instead of cocktail onions) as a marinade for lamb chops.
what is a Gibson cocktail please
@@sianwarwick633
2 1/2 ounces gin
1/2 ounce dry vermouth
Garnish: cocktail onion
Yankee here, and I purchased James Gin regular strength and I LOVED it!!
First time we've seen Lucy in a while! Nice to see she's still around!
Nice video of What Next, but personally I really prefer the Foodtribe edition with Jame's kitchen and all the food experiments with Lucy and the team.
British concept of food never fails to entertain.
I love Gin battered beer it's my favorite dish.
From fishing to fishgin
that looked fantastic plated!
I wonder if the batter would have worked with tonic instead of the soda water? It's just tonic often has that hint of lemon, which as we know goes well with fish.
Worth a try at home, to be sure.
there was a slice of lemon on the plate
Glad your ok James! Your really went hard down that tunnel.
Considering how often Lucy shows up, she may as well have a mic always hooked up.
What a chunky piece of fish! though I don't think the 6 chips would go far with the size of the fish :)
I agree the fish and chips at your pub is fab - am a bit of a foodie and the fish was by far the best I can remember having. Be careful with the seasoning of the peas was the only slight adjustment that might be worth considering. Otherwise perfect. And that was just my taste, anyway.
One other thing. If you attempt the 50k Strava cycling loop from there, I suggest you get properly fit before attempting it. Several steep hills up the sharp face of the escapement which make it a wee bit more challenging than you might expect! But it’s a great route, and you return to a great, cleanly designed, stylish pub. Modern and yet traditional at the same time. A bit like an alpine hostelry in some way I can’t define, except not in the Alps, clearly.
Best advert I've seen in a while.
I would like to see a Yorkshire Pudding made with gin.
Do it
Haven’t been to this pub yet even though it’s not far from me. Hearing that dogs are welcome makes me want to visit
Lucy and James are the best combo on this channel. more plz
Nice video Bim!
Wrong title, it should read ‘Can James May improve alcohol with fish and chips?’
I think the menu needs a separate "Gin" section, small explanation, and the items listed there. It can be your USP (hate these) in the menu.
Gin battered beer should totally be a thing. I love all three, and if you can find a way, Ferran Adrià style, to put them together, I'll be down the A30 so fast the speed cameras will never catch me.
I've often found my chips to be a lot more mesmerizing on the way back from the pub tbf although they have a tendency to elude me and end up on the floor.
as the alcohol is boiled off anyway so not part of the end product in this case could you reduce the duty by boiling off before shipping as "cooking gin"?
I miss FoodTribe
james has mastered how to youtube
"Lucy, what are the foods you don't like?"... "Yes"
Well done James! Your own pub with the best fish and chips every day. You lucky sod!
money money money..... well to be fair why not this is a lot better viewing than the Grand Tour !
One of Britain's finest treasures.
Waiting to see how the mussels come out - I wager that will be a winner.
I really miss the chip shop while studying in the UK. Now back in my country and the f&c here are prepackaged frozen battered fish barely the size of my palm when I used to have big portion the size of my forearm
nice to see lucy again 🥰
In the next video, can James’ 458 speciale be improved further using his gin
This is quality television. 10/10
Now THIS is content
"Gin battered beer" 😂😅
Lucy is the Simon Cowell of food and she liked it!
Great to see her again and would like to see her "behind the scenes" or "the making of..." content again.
She was putting behind the scenes on her personal YT channel
The subtitles on the Yorkshireman! 🤣🤣🤣
Just put the flavours into the batter, and skip the alcohol step. (Keep that for drinking...)
I go passed that area often. Must pop in for a beer some time.
"Trial and error" yep I reckon thats it. Best places (?) for fish and chips on the planet are Streets Of London in West Sacramento, CA. and Masters Superfish 191 Waterloo Road London. Sorted. Happy fishing.
Looks delicious
You could make an "accompanying pairing dish" where the gin fish n chips come with a gin drink or shot etc. That one price for both may entice a patron to order it, split the duty - ?
It's either "can improve", or "may improve", it can't be both :D
I am definitely going to visit this pub some day
Wonderful food sir .
Sorry but i subscribed to this channel to see James may, Lucy and the team do all sorts of food experiments in the bugout bunker. Not “what’s next?” Can we have foodtribe back please?
Sounds fantastic, when can we have that in Australia? 😁
Gin desserts next please. Tiramisu or would that be disgusting with gin?
No. That would be excellent
James May is such a likeable guy.
Should have marinaded the fish first with some watered-down gin (again as its prob already watered down 😁😁)
Just got my first bottle of James gin yesterday! Sadly it is now gone. The next 6 bottles will be here tomorrow!!!
Hi James.
Hi James, I am in the convict land of Australia, can I import the Gin? Love your work, cheers Paul.
One day I will try and make it to this pub
The bloopers 🤣🤣🤣
I really like fish and chips, I would love to try it!
Would love to try that.
Please bring back Food Tribe
Can't comment on how it tastes (obviously), but it looks delicious!
I love James 👍
