The Sigma MC 21 adapter does not allow you to use the full frame sensor because it tells the camera it is an APS-C lens. I figured out a "hack" so you can use your Sigma 18-35mm on your Full Frame Panasonic S1 and S1H Camera. It even allows electronic control of aperture and autofocus, however it is not ideal because when you turn of the camera it resets to Super 35mm (APS-C) Hopefully Sigma or Panasonic can fix this issue.

Pro tip: get an adapter not made by sigma. I got a fotodiox adapter for this reason. It doesnt crop in by itself :)
Did it work properly?
I suggest Sigma should make a native L mount version of this lens.
They'd need to make a full frame of it first
The Panasonic S1h and Panasonic S1 is on my camera shopping list especially for filming in and around London city
Something went wrong with the color grade on this video. Thank you for this! It explained so many questions I had about this adapter. I use GH5 with viltrox and sigma 18-35 - so I am exploring options if I were to upgrade to the new S5
Something funky going on with the color grade here buddy. I think it may have to do with the qualifiers. Thanks for the video
Yeah... I accidentally left in in 8 bit and shot log.

thanks for the videos. I am picking up a S1h soon, and I was thinking of getting some Rokinon cine primes with the Sigma MC21. Looking to get more into cine lenses, and this is a practical starting point. Have you tried with Rokinon lenses yet? Thanks!
I have! They are good lenses. I do find them to be soft wide open so I went with sigmas as my personal kit, but Rokinon’s are stellar for the price.
WHOA! Just tried it, this is GREAT! Thanks big dog! 🙏🏼
Epic! Feel free to share it with your friends

@nathan_swehla
Is possible with Sigma 50-100 f/1.8 but the only issue with this "hack" that im testing for 1 month is much more vinget than a standard Full Frame lens with same specs but also barrel distortion on Sigma 18-35 f/1.8. Sigma 18-35 is usable from 24 to 35mm with 2.39:1 black bars. Sigma 50-100 f/1.8 i believe is usable from 70-100mm i try and 50 not so distracted. Sharpness its much better on Full Frame i dont think becuase of extra resolution 100% but because we use more lens area and also chromatic abberation improvements.
Also i saw a big issue on Autofocus on photo mode maybe of old Firmware version of the lens idk. In APS-C focus is bad on find the point that i focus..not slow but its like camera believes that is in focus but its not its close but not in focus. When you fake that to Full Frame these lens are extrimily accurate in focus like a native. That i didnt own but im coming from GH5 and this accuracy its much better.
The big delima is that not worth to buy a 70-200 or 24-70 because these lens mimics that on APS-C but in less pixels on the S1H (10MP)... that are usable and much clean image from my GH5 with Viltrox at 17MP 3:2. If they fix this focus inaccuracy issue it will be great.
Another delima is it worth to spend money on 70-200 and 24-70 while you can buy with less or same money (if you go art or s pro series) Panasonic Lumix S1R to improve the existing lens performance in APS-C but also to invest only on Primes for the Full Frame format? Its a step back if i buy again zooms that i already almost have. Its a big delima...That make me confuse what my next lens must be...because i start with these zooms and i love the workflow of zooming in and out on a photoshoot outdoor or studio. Maybe i will buy only 70-200 for photography and not buy 24-70 because this lenghts are more close to video so a good Kit of Primes will be much better opticly (24mm 35mm 50mm) with 5.9K.
Hmmmm.... that’s a lot to consider. I have been thinking about which lenses to invest in. I think I’m going to keep my Sigma 50-100mm however and shoot in Super 35mm (APS-C) and then purchase a couple prime lenses like the 24mm and 50mm 1.4
I tried out the Canon and Sigma 24-70mm but didn’t like the build. Sigma is bulky and is heavy to turn the zoom and focus. Canon’s focus ring is rubbish for video lol. Hopefully the sigma primes will be the lenses for me
@@NatesFilmTutorials Im dissapointed for the Sigma 24-70 L mount that they change the most logical way to focus + a lot barrel distortion....and it focus by wire..I dont have it to test how responsive is this focus by wire system so im not risking to invest on that but waitting for some reviews about manual focusing nobody talks about the focus by wire experience which is strange.
It worth to invest on premium prime glass like Sigma 28mm and Sigma 40mm or Zeiss Otus 28mm and 55mm. Sigma release 35mm f/1.2 but again that focus by wire...idk if i dont see...and i think the image quaility is awesome.
I feel like i dont want to go cheap on my Full Frame transition because this format is so future proof. So quality glass is the best to support that. If it was only photography ok maybe i will go little cheap but now with 6K Full Frame video.. a beast lens will level this up. So thats the bad of Hybrid Shooter :) you must now care about also for video quality as result to try find an almost perfect lens to wotk with in both worlds.
amazing! thank u
Cool thanks
Hi there, great video.
how did you calibrate that sig 18-35mm f1.8 combo to stop the focus hunting when taking a shot.
Very handy! I think Fotodiox or Kipon or someone has just released an electronic adaptor for L-mount as well - so it would be inyteresting to see what the options are there. Obviously, it wouldn't have the efficiencies of the native Alliance codes etc, but may be worth it to buy that plus the 18-35. Subbed.
Appreciate it! I hope so too. I also won’t be upset if one of them decided to make an Nd adapter. I will buy immediately!
I wonder if FF is enabled not super35 on 4k like on the Sigma mc-21. It's a little dissapointing to not being able to use my caon ef 16-35mm in full frame 4k
Amazing video 🤯
THANKS!
Sigma and Panasonic need to stop playing and just enable full frame with this lens.
how about just get a 24-35mm f2 instead?
I completely agree - at least for square mode which is within APS-C lens projection. Plus, you've just reminded me of a Camera Conspiracies video that popped up recently - I'll have to watch it now. It's called something like 'The lens Fuji doesn't want you to know about!'
Great hack. I was wondering is there something off with the colors on your face as you show up as very pink on one side. Could be RUclips compression though.
Yep. I forgot to switch back to 10 bit when recording V Log. :(
@@NatesFilmTutorials what makes the pink colors on your face? my gh5 does the same thing and need to know how to fix...
I accidentally shot 8 bit with VLOG. Wouldn’t be a problem if I had shot a natural profile or switched back to 10 bit
@@NatesFilmTutorials ohhh ok gotcha! I'm currently shooting a real estate video in slo-mo 8bit V-log on Gh5 and was getting that same weird effect happening. ill try shooting in Cine-D profile. thanks!
Glad to help!
Is the MC21 fixed now? What about the sigma art 50-100mm?
Handy info to know! Will give it a go on our S1 :)
Sweet! Let me know how it works for you
@@NatesFilmTutorials Daaaaang.....I couldn't get it to work on my S1...any ideas? maybe a settings adjustment? Could you send your settings?
Perfect❤ it works thank you
Sweet! Enjoy it
assuming you don't need continuous autofocus.
You don’t get that anyway with the Sigma MC-21... unfortunately
@@NatesFilmTutorials that's what my comment was referring to, yes
@@Triforcefilms and??
@@no15minutecities you waiting on something?
If you need autofocus the S1H (or any Lumix) is not the right choice
Please post footage showing the difference between super 35 and your full frame hack. Show us the depth of field and noise. I bet they are equal.
And what f/1.8 zoom alternatives are available?
If they make focal reducers to use this type of lens on smaller sensors (micro 4/3) why can't they make focal expanders to work with larger sensors??
Oh snap! Yes Sigma, please allow the S1h to switch into full frame mode please!
Yeah boi!
Does this work with the 50-100?
Also, I think it's usable at 24 not 28. Unless I did something wrong
I Have that lens+adapter and the sony a7r II and there is 3 options: super 35 1: On/ 2: Off/ 3: Auto. I think Panasonic needs to do a firmware update about this.
Absolutely! that sounds like a great idea. They do have the option to shoot full frame or Super 35mm, but something weird with this adapter and lens combo that forces you to be in super 35mm
Hi, great video. Do you have the Sigma 18-35 Canon version connected to M21 adapter or Sigma version? Thanks
Can you take aps c photos on it or only video
I do the same with my older tamron lense, the MC21 don't even allow them to be used, brings up an error but once you do that remove and attach they work but no aperture control. Now the real question is how is the actual image quality when you use it in full frame mode at 28 and 35,typically apsc lenses that cover full frame they have catastrophic image quality
Quality is amazing, but my Sigma 18-35 have focus-shift on fullframe, left corner have a little closer focus range (1-2m closer on 30m distance)
I have the last versions of firmeware (MC21 & S1H),but your hack don't work on there last versions
Whether can use 18-35 full frame in photo mode?
Sigma adapter give s35 or full frame?
It allows full frame coverage
diantre mi hermano eres un durooooooooooo
Nice tip man
Glad you liked it
This video and these comments confuse me. I have the S1H and I use old EF canon and other lenses with EF mount with my MC21 and I use full frame always. I have all 3 choices in camera. Can you tell me where I'm going right or wrong? I also wanted to ask you if it is ok to use 35mm mode to get a 2nd focal length? Is there any draw back to using my full frame in 35MM mode. I'm new to this coming from Camcorders. Thanks Tom
If you have full frame lenses then no problem!
You can definitely utilize Super 35mm for extra reach on your lenses. I do it quite often. Let’s say you only have a 50mm lens and you need to punch in you can. The only difference between cropping in and using a true 85mm lens is that your going to get slightly more noise because your still cropping into the sensor, more depth of field and the characteristics of the lens will still be 50mm.
If you want a full frame look, and in an ideal world, always use full frame lenses on a full frame body. This video was more of a trick to use an APS-C lens (that can cover full frame on the longer end) on a full frame camera recording full frame video.
Hope that helps clear up the confusion
@@NatesFilmTutorials that info is gold and yes it helps. Thank you for answering. Looking forward.
What firmware of the camera are you using and did you ever update any firmware on the mc21 adapter? I can't use my Canon EF 16-35mmii in full frame mode in 4k, only 6k. it's all super35 in 4k mode.
After I watched this, I bought haoge n to my surprise, I'm not able to use my canon lenses but vintage lenses from m42 to ef n from ef to L mount. Guys please don't purchase haoge passive adapter if you wanna use ef mount lenses
I use with My a7lll and don't need a hack you can choose in full frame but only you have to take care about the vignetting
I’m glad I’m the Sony it doesn’t do that. Quite strange
@@NatesFilmTutorials nice video ! I think the sigma 18-35 it's one of the best apsc zoom lenses! And so sharp
It is! I dig Sigma glass! I want’em all
Hello sir when i using mc21 with canon 24-70 mark 1 s1 indicate
apsc mode is there any solution for that change to full frame
thanks for help
Wait... so you can use Tokina 11-16 at full frame?? So you'd get 16mm 2.8 full frame with that lens? Does this also work with the sigma 50-100?
Yep the Tokina actually works straight up. 16mm covers full frame too. Which is really nice for a budget lens. Also you have the option when shooting Super 35mm you can zoom out to 11 too!
This Sigma 50-100mm _can_ work, it’s giving me a bit more of a fight, I would leave it in Super 35mm honestly
I own sigma 50-100mm. Similar fashion to 18-35mm. You have a bit zoom at end that works in full frame. In the case I think 85mm-100mm.
WAIT WAHT ADAPTOR DO I NEED FOR SIGMA 1.8 LOENS TO FIT ONTO FULL FRAME CAMERA AND WORK??
When I do this on my S5 it works…but looks pretty fisheye. Anyone else have this issue and is there a workaround?
Does it work if set to stills as well as video?
I really want this lens (18-35) & (50-100 1.8) how well do they work with AF and the s1 or s5? I want this setup because i can adapt them also to my xt4 which I use for YT or personal projects. Thanks!!
So far I don’t know if any adapter that allows AF with EF lenses. You can only get AF with an L mount lens.
@@NatesFilmTutorials thanks for clarifying!!
Hi Nate , thank you for that heck . Is the a adaptor for Batis Sony e mount to Panasonic L mount? Thank you
Just tried this on the latest S1H firmware. Looks like they saw your hack and now block this!.....uggg. I wonder why they did that.
Haha I don't think they've seen this video, but if they did I would hope they at least give us the option like Sony does
Hi Nate, thanks for the video, however, when I do this it keeps going back to Super 35mm when I click it back in place. Thanks!
Try messing with pressing the full frame button. It’s a bit finicky and I couldn’t get it to work all the time with the 50-100mm... come on panasonic
@@NatesFilmTutorials Will do thanks Nate!
Nate, what lens mount do you use to put the Tokina 11-16 on your S1H? Thanks.
I use the sigma mc 11
@@NatesFilmTutorials Great, thanks Nate!
I have just tried it. It kind of work for a short while, but I don't get AF at all and then after a while it fall back to APSC mode
Bummer
Anyone knows what to do if a Sigma 24-70 2.8 DG HSM is detected as an APS-C lens on a Panasonic S1 via this MC-21 adapter? Although it's a full frame lens. And this trick shown in this video works until I click the lens back and it's an APS-C again. Any clue?
That is so weird! I used this lens before and didn't have that issue.
@@NatesFilmTutorials I figured that out. Just had to refresh the sigma mc-21 to a 1.3 firmware and everything fixed. Before that it was 1.0
Gotcha! Glad you figured it out!
My Sigma contemporary full frame 20mm F1.8 and my 120-300 F2.8 FF reads as S35 when it’s a FF lens. So annoying!
Really? That doesn't seem right. Have you checked the firmware in the lens and camera?
Here is an idea but a full frame lens 16-35 2.8
I think you missed the point of this video
@@NatesFilmTutorialsI get it its a workaround because you want the 1.8 on a zoom but not ideal. 28-35 is also not ideal I would just get the 35mm 1.4 FF and call it a day.
3:00 "Uh, we did fix it!" -- Sigma
Did they? I no longer own a Panasonic camera to test this. So it’s great if they did
So I cannot get this to work with my sigma 50-100 f1.8. It works with my 18-35 50% of the time. Is this because of updated firmware? Is anyone else able to get this to work 100% of the time?
I noticed the 50-100mm didn’t work as easily. My hopes is that Panasonic and/or Sigma work out a solution to allow the user to choose the field of view.
Just curious, how's the AF with this combo regardless of the hack? Thanks.
A big negative with this adapter is that it only works with AFS not AFC, no continuous autofocus in video :(

My 18-35 has an ever so slightly tiny slip on focus ring. Does yours have this too? Thanks!
I don’t think mine does... what do you mean my “slip”?
@@NatesFilmTutorials Just like a tiny bit free play, before it actually turns. Like ever so slightly and you can hear a little 'click' .
That happens when I turn it past the minimum and infinity focus points. You can feel the click and know when you’ve reached the maximum rotation of the lens, but the ring will continue to spin.
Does that help?
@@NatesFilmTutorials Thank you, but that is not the issue with mine, since that is normal. But I am talking about a clicking and a time free-play on the focus ring. But I guess I'm the only o r having that issue.
Had it sent to repair came back the same... And wondered if others experience the same. Thanks anyway! 🙏
@@betweenframesproduction3968 hmm.. You're Welcome! Glad you liked the video
just get the Sigma 24-35mm F2
“no I don’t think I will”
That is about the stupidest conclusion anyone could come up to after watching this video. Like, catastrophically stupid.
@@NatesFilmTutorials incredible response hahaha. best.
I've got problems with my Sigma 18-35 ef lens on my Mc 21 adapter with the S1H (v 2.0). It doesn't go to S35 but stays in FF, but there are black bars on the the left and bottom side. Do i need a firmware update for the adapter? However, it does go to S35mm on other Sigma lensen. So perhaps the lens itself?
You'll need to update the firmware of your lens with the Sigma USB dock. I had the same issue when my lens was on the 1.0 fw. Also, this hack doesn't work for me. Might have been patched out.
@@freejakk It works only in photo mode on me. then I swtich to video mode. On video mode no matter how many times I tried, it does not work. but in photo mode, it will work out maybe 1 out 3 times that I tried.
Hey, Y'all. I'm having this issue of where im using the mc-21 to connect my sigma 18-35 f 1.8 to my Panasonic s5, but when I go to into S&Q mode to check out the slow-motion options, the FHD options (which allow you to shoot slow-mo up to 180 FPS) are greyed out, and I am only able to go to 60 fps?
Doesn't work anymore unfortunately.
I heard that Vsauce Music in my mind at 0:23 :D
Before i watch the video, My guess is that you shoot 6k and crop it to 4k
I was wrong 😂
Haha Thanks
I wanted to ask, so does the 18-35mm work on the s1h does it just crop to super 35 or does it not work at all? I’ve confused on this and just wanted to know lol
Hey Jacob! It is set to super 35mm by default, so it will work, but there is no way to adjust it to full frame with the sigma mc21
i swear i need to start making stupid face in my thumbnail i guess its really a thing
Thanks? Haha There are significantly more clicks than when you don’t
Hi, I have the S1H with Sigma 45mm 2.8 DG DN(full frame lens) and the mc-21 with 18-35 and mc-21 with canon 24-105..I cannot use the Full sensor at higher fps(50 or 60) :/
Is this Sigma's limitation?
I sent them email, and they will contact their department in Japan, so I am still waiting...
4K 60p has a super 35mm crop. So you do not get the full frame sensor readout. You need to switch to 1080 if you want the full sensor and 60p and higher
Nate's Film Tutorials thanks...what about slr lenses or cinema lenses which are fully manual(with adapter)?
Same story unfortunately. It’s a limitation of the camera not the lens.
....or just get a Sigma in nikon G mount and a manual aperture adapter.
Ah well, if someone already owns this lens in EF it’s still a good way to utilize it.
It seems like this hack doesn't work with S5...
They may have updated the firmware that would affect this.. hmmm
Hehe....nice trick, man.
so the title was a lie and just clickbait..thumb down.
Sadly, it does not work since in updated my s1h in 2.0
Really? You might hav to play around with it. That’s frustrating, I wish they would just give you the option, it’s not like you would accidentally record the wrong crop mode.
I don't see much difference.
Hey Thanks Dimitri! The difference is there when you look for it. Definitely shallower depth of field and because 35mm is going to look differently that 24mm on aps-c for example.
Same field of view, but different perspective
@@NatesFilmTutorials ok. Thanks.
I somehow doubt the perspective/DOF changes UNLESS you move the camera closer or further away from the subject - that how DOF works in conjunction with the f stop. It's all about the physical distance relationships between the lens and subject while keeping the same compositional frame. Otherwise you're just cropping the image, and with no field/perspective changes.
I also don't quite understand the difference between what you're doing and the camera's natural Super 35 mode. I can't really see that you're gaining anything once you zoom in to avoid the vignette. Thanks for the video anyway.
DOF is different in Full vs S35
your face crushed
I know, I addressed it on another comment. Don’t forgot switch back to 10 bit lol
