When the announcers are watching the replay, in slow-mo and zoomed in on the play, and they say "That was really close" - then it's not an awful call by an ump trying to make split decisions from a possibly bad angle.
Can't agree more. Can't catch everything, and a lot of them are very close calls. Going to get a few of them wrong every now and then. Don't hear many people praising all the right calls 99% of armchair ump/referees would completely miss in real time that these officials make multiple times every single day.
Is it just me, or were most of these not actually "awful umpiring"? Some of them may have been the wrong call, but almost all of them seemed like they were very close, could have been called either way, kind of plays.
Yeah I would say that 90% of this video was legit. There was the one strike at the very start and the 2 umps antagonizing the players that were the only things that fit this video.
0:08 - Probably was a little low but it wasn't egregiously bad, even the graphic makes it look pretty close. I'll call it bad. 0:31 - It does look like his foot comes off the bag for a second, but I think Wright's foot may have blocked the umpire from being able to see it since it only came off for a very brief moment. Don't think you can call this a bad call. 0:48 - Yeah, bad safe call, but the fielders didn't do themselves any favors by crowding the bag and making it harder to tell who was on the bag and who wasn't. 1:00 - Right at the beginning of the clip you see the pitcher start to move his glove as though he's going to come set and then stop. Textbook balk, 100% correct call. 1:35 - Batter or Runner Interference. It is interference by a batter or a runner when:(5) Any batter or runner who has just been put out, or any runner who has just scored, hinders or impedes any following play being made on a runner. Such runner shall be declared out for the interference of his teammate (see Rule 6.01(j)) Martinez walking where he was impeded the play being made on the runner attempting to score, which is textbook interference, and since Martinez was just put out, the runner is out. 100% correct call. 1:52 - Looks like in the umpire's judgement, the fielder had possession of the ball and only lost it after the runner made contact and shook his foot to knock it out. It's not really clear whether he ever had full possesion but I don't think you can call this a bad call. 1:57 - Yeah, looks like a missed strike, but it's a borderline pitch. 2:15 - No play is shown so you can't tell what they're arguing about, but since it's a pitcher, it's probably balls and strikes, and arguing balls and strikes is explicitly against the rules, so the umpire is right to tell him to get off the field and back to the dugout. 2:28 - That pitch was clearly off the plate and was called a ball. 100% correct call. 2:50 - This definitely looks like obstruction rather than interference, so the runner should have been awarded 2nd base. Bad call. 3:13 - The pitch hit the batter but the batter swung. HP ump should have gotten help on that one. Bad call. 3:25 - Bumgarner gets the ball and tags Wong before he gets to the base. 100% correct out call. 3:38 - The foot comes off the bag so the runner should be safe, but the umpire is in the correct position to make this call and that specific angle wouldn't show the umpire the foot coming off. Can't call this one a bad call, just an unfortunate angle. Looks like it was corrected on replay. 4:06 - Same play as the last one but with the opposite result. I can see Rizzo's extreme stretch making it look like he came off the bag there from the angle that the umpire has. Also can't call it a bad call. 4:14 - Yeah, he missed the tag. Bad call. 4:42 - It does look like this ball hit the ground after being foul tipped, but only when you see the extreme slow motion camera view. At full speed it looks like the catcher comes up with it, plus the umpire is BEHIND the catcher instead of in front. Can't call this a bad call. 4:52 - This is really borderline. It's umpire's judgment whether the ball comes out as a "voluntary release", in which case it's a catch, or if it's dropped accidentally, in which case it's not. I can see this call going either way. 5:16 - Looks like he got the tag on him. Bad call. 5:22 - This play is a mess and without seeing the full play and final ruling we can't tell whether the call was bad or not. What I THINK happened was that the home plate umpire ruled that it hit the batter after hitting the bat, since he's putting his hands up as if he's calling a foul ball. 5:44 - The runner seems to veer at least 3 feet away from his established path to avoid the tag from the fielder. Looks like a good call to me. 6:06 - Umpire missed the ball hitting the batter's back leg. Bad call. 6:25 - This was so close I couldn't tell until I slowed down the RUclips video to 0.25x speed that the ball beat the runner. Definitely could see this one going either way. 6:32 - The ball hits the plate and is fielded in fair territory. That's a fair ball. 100% correct call. 6:52 - Pitcher spins to throw to first and then doesn't actually throw. Textbook balk, 100% correct call. 7:19 - I thought the ball clipped part of his uniform sleeve, which DOES count as a hit batsman. If so, 100% correct call. 7:37 - The replay makes it look like he beat the throw. 100% correct call. 7:54 - The runner at 1st base interferes with the 1st baseman trying to make a play on the pop up. By rule, that runner is out for interference, the ball is dead, and the batter is awarded 1st base. 100% correct call. All in all, there are 27 plays in this video. Of those, 10 of them were 100% correct, 9 were bang-bang plays or so close they could have gone either way, 6 were actually bad, and one of them we didn't have the full play so we never saw the final ruling, so we don't know whether it was bad or not. Hardly a good case that the umpires are "awful"
The balk at 1:00 is him signaling to go through the signs again, you can see as soon as he does it the catcher starts to give signs. It wasn’t as obvious of a motion as it should have been and the way he holds his glove under his chin doesn’t help but it’s not a balk. He hadn’t made a motion to come set or start a windup.

Almost every single one of these was either the actual right call or "the umpire is not all knowing." They are subject to missing things based on angles and obstruction of view. Only a couple of these are actually awful calls.

About a Third were absolutely correct and out of the rest 90% were really slow-mo close.
Your umpires are all game spoilers, they have to much power. They spoil a beautiful game.
yea almost all of these calls are just the plays themselves which are very hard to call, and then they get overturned asfter they have time to review them. (being an umpire is waaaay harder than it looks, most people sturggle with little league)
Lots of these are correct calls. Why are they on here?
Because Baseball Sports does not know the game or the rules.
You can’t get mad at the umpires because it’s so fast and such a small diffrence
2:24 - Hernandez - Noooo... Thats not an MLB strike... Maybe a little league/ HS league. But def not even a AAA strike...
Very few of these would qualify as "awful umpiring"..... Lots of very close plays that could have gone either way.....
If that’s the best ‘awful’ calls you could find in creating this video you should give up making them. Most of them were correct or so ridiculously close they’re not worth putting in the video
Most of these were not examples of bad umpiring, just wrong calls made in a split second. It's why we have replay now. Cheers...
Part 95 by the end of the season! 😂
These were definitely not awful umpires, and you can tell this person probably doesn't know much about baseball, I mean, their name is BASEBALL SPORTS.
How was 1:10 a balk
Who called these umpires bad ? The MEDIA ?
Since YT is technically media, yes. This YT content creator is trash.
Some of these were the right calls. But from personal experience, umps are right but sometimes not so much
Their attire is what makes them hated even more. BTW Joe West should fight Jake Paul
Most of these are great umpires
