DM idea: whenever a player rolls a 1 (on, say, creating a magic item), have a monodrone pop up and say "It looks like you're trying to craft a magic item. Would you like help?"

I may have riled up all forces of good and evil upon me for coming up with such an idea. Evil to try and claim it, good to try and destroy me before I do something else.

Where did you learn to craft.
My group has actually run into a rogue modron in Sigil. It was roaming the streets looking to be hired as an adventurer. It was a tridrone that didn't seem to understand that it was a modron and only knew itself as "an adventurer." So we hired it. He's been adventuring with us for a pretty long time as one of our henchmen for quite some time now, and every so often we have to teach it what adventurer is expected to do. Most people are also terrified of him cause it's pretty obvious he's a rogue modron and they're known to go a bit crazy.
Rogue Modrons have tendency to cause spontaneous incursion of larger modron forces who seek to eliminate any modron who stolen a piece of counciousness.
His name wouldn't be "Nordom", would it? ;-)
(And if you don't get the reference, look him up. Simple Google search. You'll probably like what you find.)
Watch him randomly evolve into a Quadrone during one of your sessions lol
I've been wanting to play a modron PC with the same idea for a while now actually. I'd just give it warforged stats.

Man those inevitables don't do their jobs.
D&D history being established before inevitables were actually implemented into D&D lore. You can't blame them not doing their "job" when the creators of the inevitables just threw them into the lore at a later date. ---or they could have done what Games Workshop did and just destroy everything and start from scratch as they did with Warhammer Fantasy.

They are actually statted out in 3.5 and it's frankly disappointing. Anybody capable of doing shit serious enough to attract their attention is also powerful enough to wipe the floor with them. A Marut is basically little more than a lich's free shipment of adamantium. The deity guardian may as well be a commoner all for all the good it'll do at that point.

That is perhaps true, but for how long can one last? After all, you can kill them, but they can't die, they'll learn everything you're capable of, and one day, they'll hard counter you.
What if the Modron were nothing more than a Beholder's dream of mathematical perfection?
MultiGG2 wouldn't a Beholder's dream of mathematical perfection be entirely in a base equal to the number of eyestalks it has, since that would be the perfect number upon which to count?

I like to imagine that modrons know how to measure hit points and armor class and stuff. It'd be a really extreme fourth wall break but I think it'd fit them pretty well.
I find the nature of the Modrons fascinating because they literally order as a force of stability. From a human or mortal perspective in this case it would be easier for a Quadrone to just commanded all the lesser Modrons but while it would be efficient it would not be stable which is the opposite of what the Modrons and by proxy law wants. so the Modrons may seem horribly inefficient to us mortals but they are stable which is what the mind of a Lawful Neutral creature seeks.

I have noticed something you failed to mention that needs saying.
The promotion process of a Modron happens when a higher Modron dies then a Modron from one level immediately takes it's place in a flash of light. However, it is said in the video, that a random Modron is promoted.
Yet how can this be? For Mechanus is a plane of pur law, and order, something random is... Chaotic. This would mean there is some kind of selection process for the promotion of a Modron. It most likely simply unknown.
perhaps what we define "chaos" is ignorance of all of variables in play.
maybe there are invisible patterns through wich a modron gets promoted, maybe taks accomplished, time of servitude and so on ;-)
Or maybe the law is that it must be random to maintain equality of chance?

I would go so far as to say that the deity known as Primus is in fact the entirety of Mechanus and that the singular entity that holds the name "Primus" is merely a literal face for it, hence why if the Primus is killed, it isn't actually killed, but is merely replaced by a column of promoted Modrons. Does that make sense?

Meh, Orcus killed and usurped Primus for a little while, being the One and the Prime himself, so that idea doesn't really have merit.
There are enough TES lore videos on RUclips, but not many DnD. I want to see more of those.
AJ pickett does some ecology videos on D&D monsters. Even those guys at Nerdarchy have.

But they are boring. MrRhexx is a great storyteller, and makes the stories much more interesting.

Gabi Alex The worst part is that most people who cover The Elder Scrolls focuses way too heavily on Skyrim content just to try and stay relevant with it's mainstream fans even though it's, arguably, one of the more boring places in the lore.
HOLY CRAP, i wrote a campaign for my friends to play and it actually follows this plot line pretty well and i have never heard of this before!
Out of curiosity, which plot are you referring to? The Great Modron March in general (the cyclical modron travel phenomenon), or the specific AD&D adventure series by Monte Cook?
Managed to reprogram a duodrone once, loved the little guy, really helped me out.

Mechanus is my favorite plane. One of my campaigns in my homebrew taking place in a wartorn hell where evil creatures reside on the entire surface and humans along with other non-evil creatures like elves and dwarves have all been driven underground, took the party to Mechanus to fix an imbalance in the wheels, ultimately causing vast stretches of Mechanus to be destroyed, but eventually righting the imbalance and thereby returning order to the rest of the planes. Good times.

Wow the inevitables really suck at their jobs
given the fact inevitables are machines I wouldn't be surprised if the reason lichs and vampires exist is some glitch in the system. like "hunt those who extend their lifespans unnaturally or commit extreme acts to extend their lives" = lichs/vampire ok. because they are technically dead and therefore don't extend their "LIFE"spans.
Also the stopping those who wish seek to ascend to Godhood. Out of all the stories I here of mortals becoming gods it's never here about the inevitables stopping them.

@@theirDevil They aren't all that powerful mist liches would body an inevitable. They were a good concept but far to weak for what they're supposed to be.
Hey Rhexx I really appreciate all the effort that goes into all of your videos. The fact that you don't upload that often doesn't really bother me and I have been watching your videos for a very long time and I just can't get enough. Thank you for this video! As a third edition DnD player, I was largely deprived of information and artwork for the Modrons, and was unaware of their existence for a long time.

Modron March has a known purpose. They are exploring to amass all the info about the realms to Primus can adjust all his calculations and plots to stay current with ongoing events.
Seeing how these "Inevitables" are designated to maintain order and righting wrong-doings, I wonder what my party is there for?

um, no. the corrupted secundus led almost half of the modrons into Acheron, where they still are to this day. The uncorrupted secundus became the new Primus, but his army was somewhat diminished, so he had a hard time keeping his territory from the inevitables and formians.
You should do a video on the secrets of the universe like how where all the planes came to be, What the entire goal of the monodrones are and what is the machine that is mechanus doing, etc

I retired a bard to keep as an NPC to build things for PCs. Her engineering proficiency is kinda OP, so it allows her to do customization, maintenance, and repairs for her rogue modron friend/assistant. The construct is low level and mainly just good for taking things apart, and it tends to sometimes malfunction due to being on the prime material plane for a long time. That said, if you don't mind a buddy with no sense of humor who takes everything just a bit too literally, a rogue modron can be a very loyal henchman.

I really dig the screenshots from the 1st Monsters Manual! Or is it the Mindtrous Compendium..? I think the Modrons were talked about in the "secondary" Monsters Manual. I used to have that one...ahhhh, memories!

Fun thing about Modrons that isn't fully explained here: they can't comprehend any Modron more than one step above or below them. So, not only can a Monodrone not recognize a Tridrone as a fellow Modron, the Tridrone also can't recognize the Monodrone; it seems too simple a creature to be worth noticing. It just gives orders to its Duodrones, who then pass them on to the Monodrones in terms they can understand. This limitation means the hierarchy in Modrons is absolute, because they literally can't talk outside of the chain of command. Only the highest levels, Primus and a few others, can see the whole system at work.

I just started running a campaign. The Zordon for the party, is good, however I can see a point down the road when Every variety of Inevitable is serving him a warrant, or a cease and decist notice. Seriously, he has admirable goals but there's an inevitable for EVERY one of his plans.
I remember them from Planescape: Torment.

I love your videos. They are entertaining and informative. Before the 5:00 mark you state a "random" modron is promoted. I doubt anything random happens in Mechanus. I think Primus with their vast Psionic powers has a way of choosing who gets promoted and when. I would love to go to Mechanus aka Nirvana when I die. To become a Maruts aka An Inevitable is my greatest ambition.

Good video, but i have a nitpick: While all Maruts are Inevitables, not all Inevitables are Maruts. The Marut is a type of Inevitable, not another word for Inevitables as a whole.
The Marut Inevatable looks like Thanos.

My favorite high level campaign had my group team up with a marut to kill a wizard attempting to become a God, but during the battle the wizard completed the ritual.
So the marut turned on the party as they where now trying to kill a god.
Best face heel turn I ever had. Took the party completely by surprise.
The BBG ended up being a being of law and order as the wizard was now a God and just popped away.
I intended for it to be a party wipe/puzzle boss since there is only one way to stop a marut but our paladin figured out the trick.
When all but he lay disabled he vowed to never try to kill the new God again and the marut let them all leave.

Since the first time I saw a Modron, I kept thinking of Stanisław Lem, because these look like something out of "Fables for Robots" or "The Cyberiad".
i think inevitables specifically could use some heavy tidying in 5e bc shit gets sloppy between editions & interpretations tho there are some phenomenal & potentially bounteous morsels within their mythology

I love the videos and am curious about how much time you usually spend to make each video. I like how much detail you put into each topic and hope to use this to enlighten my knowledge on the forgotten realms and to expand my creativity as a gm/dm. I would also love to see more videos on aberrations in general since I have a bit of an obsession with them. :)

So if you destroyed the facility that creates Monodrones then they wouldn't be replaced when killed, right? So there would be no Monodrones to replace the Duodrones when they are killed and so on for the tridrones, and so you could work your way up and eventually kill Primus and he wouldn't be replaced.
What would the ramifications of such actions have though?
Honestly, the ant things might be the least bizarre and odd thing in this video
