When i was running Out of Abyss as a GM, my players unintentionally fell in love with Themberchaud. They thought he was cute and even called him “Lord Adorable”. So i rolled with it. He than helped the party fight against 2 Demon Lords at once. Because the party Bard convinced the dragon that eating a roasted demon lord would give Lord Adorable god like power. They said it as a deception. But I, as a GM, took at as reality… The players got so invested in Themberchaud that almost the entire campaign revolved around him. After he got humiliated by Baphomet, he became kinda depressed because he was no longer the mighty being he once was. Which resulted in him being ashamed of his current phat-assness and inability to even properly breath fire. So party decided to, you know.. help him out and restore his ego. And i assure you they went into great lengths for it...
Technically if he truly kill a demon lord (and eat is heart) it became a demon lord (replacing the previous). Normally it append only if the demon lord are kill on there plane , but the specific event of Oota bind there essence to the underdark, so should resolve has themberchaud becoming a demon lord (or the prince of all demon if it eat demogorgon) . i am curious which demon lord he have eat ?
A long time ago, I heard a D&D story about a Dragon that was probably Themberchaud. Basically the player snuck into his lair and told him the truth about how the city will kill him. It's not that Ukotoa (Ukotoa, ukotoa, uKotOa, UkotoA) wants to help Themberchaud avoid heart disease or diabetes, he's just a hater (and if you think there's no diabetes in D&D, just ask the Trickfoot family from campaign 1 - Dungeons & Diabeetus is canon).
I, for one, love Themberchonk. He is the best. He illustrates a point about encounter design, too: the key to making an encounter with a monster exciting and memorable is _Specificity._ It's not _just_ a dragon, it's a FAT dragon. Your players may or may not remember the dragon encounter plucked straight from the Monster Manual. But they will never forget Chonk the Red Dragon, so thicc his wings could barely carry him aloft for short jumps. The entries in the Monster Manual are, in the end, stock assets. Raw materials for making your own encounters and dungeons. The scaffold on which to build something truly unique. Even if you add only a single descriptor onto the monster, that's more than enough to spark a really good encounter.
Getting a blade to cut through the dragon's scales is hard enough but getting it past his layer of fat is going to be near impossible. Themberchaud would be a nightmare to deal with. I imagine its like the Kingpin from Marvel Comics was reborn as a dragon.
Good news part 2: Think of all the ultra-high end food his body represents. You will have the highest grade gourmet meat in quantities that will last you the entire rest of the campaign.
@@themarsh429while that is fair, Themberchaud also has psionics resistance and some other bullshit... likely is more durable too, which might prove more useful, that flight, considering how powerful such adventurers would be.
@@SephirothRyu Bad News Part 2: All that fat under dragonscale makes for very effective natural armor. Themberchaud's tough hide prevents blades from just sliding through without significant force, and his blubber absorbs the force of impact. Good luck getting through all that.
In my out of the Abyss campaign, my players helped Themberchaud figure things out. To get himself out of this situation, he decided, he was going to fake his own death. It worked out *perfectly* because I had them fight a simulacrum, and the sorcerer finished it with a disintegrate. The keepers were like 'where's the body' and my Sorcerer went "Gone, reduced to atoms." :P And now he's off trying to take over the jungle. (He's also started working out :P )
That is super funny and also sad, Themberchaud is the same as a lion the lived his whole life in captivity and got trown into the wild, he is out of shape, alone and does not know how hunt or survive without help, hell he may not even know how to fly properly, even if he could.
A lot of chromatic dragon learn to fend for themselves after they hatch their egg, while flightless and slower he is still an adult red dragon, he will have to be very unlucky to not survive with all the advantages he has.
Another problem with using lava for smithing is that it will introduce impurities, and therefore weaknesses, to whatever you are forging. Dragon fire would presumably not have that issue.
Probably way quicker and more precise too, a skilled dragon could heat just the part that was wanted. Lava could still be pretty good for smelting low-melting ores though, if you can just dip a crucible in a river, but it would have to be a particularly hot lava to melt steel. Would get a bit messy with the rock coating the outside but could be kinda convenient.
Dorgothoth is definitely letting Themburchaud stay there because they provide a unique specimen for magic experimentation. And since Themburchaud also gained strong resistance to Psionics, that strange magic adjacent art that Dorgothoth might want to study as well
yeah i don't see him having too much of an issue with a Dragon as young as Themberchaud being close by unless it ends up bringing unwanted attention. I like the idea of his Psionic resistance being interesting to Daurgothoth for studies and them potentially forming a pact, especially as he likely has knowledge of crafting, metallurgy etc from his time in the underdark which could also be useful.
Out of the Abyss was the first D&D campaign I ever played, and Themberchaud (or Thunderchode as we called him) cemented himself as probably the most memorable character for me without him actually doing anything - because when our party went to retrieve the red dragon egg, the DM rolled a d100 for laughs to see if the egg would start hatching, and the man rolled a perfect 100. Not sure if this is exactly accurate, but we decided that newly hatched dragons behave sort of like ducks in the fact that they instantly imprint upon the first creature they see, and after another roll to figure out who or what that creature was, my character wound up becoming this dragon's dad. After that, we just booked it from the city and played the rest of the campaign with a looming paranoia of "that fat dragon is gonna try killing us this session for sure".
Ah Themberchaud.... i remember in a homebrew version of a game I was in, we freed him, and eventually he came back to help and he turned all that fat into bulk. He went from looking like he did, to looking like a dragon version of Armstrong from Metal gear rising. He didn't need his fire breath anymore to take out demons, he just punched them. (We convinced him that the demons were taking away all of his stuff, and he got pissed. And our PCs didn't care about grakulstug, so yeah. xD)
I can’t imagine Durgathoth even cares about him because it’s not like he’s a real threat. Even if he hit Ancient Red Dragon status, that’s still well below a threat Durgathoth would have to deal with.
Maybe Durgathoth just finds the rotund red dragon flopping around his turf pretending he's hot stuff entertaining. I mean, we all think Themberchonk is funny and memorable, why wouldn't someone in-universe?
My guess is that Durgathoth lets him stay rent free so he can act as a sort of door guard, dealing with any pesky adventurers who wander into the ruins so Durgathoth doesn't have to. (or rather, to provide an additional obstacle before the adventurers get into the undead and traps that he'd have to fix)

My guess is he found out they're going to kill him and if you read "Themberchaud's lament" it's clear he's actually quite humiliated and upset by his lot in life. So he decides to waddle over to the most evil and powerful dragon in the setting and begs him to help him exact revenge. Durgathoth may well react to that with indifference, leaving Thember muddling around trying to prove himself endlessly, or indulge him, or view him as a resource like you said.
I played a paladin in the *"Out of the abyss"* campaign. Using the mushrooms that can shrink your size, I convinced him to come with us and we would help each other to leave the underdark. We got out and I took him into the mountains to try and shed a few hundred pounds and embrace the way of the swole.
I think that the dissapperance of the dragon egg MAY BE Themberchaud's doing. Think about it. A pampered dragon learns that there is a plan, maybe not to kill him, but to raise another dragon. A rival. So he influences the Dueregar theivs to steal the egg. That way he won't have to share the spoils with anyone
So about the smoke in Gracklstugh. I played a half-orc paladin who passed through there on his "adventure". Sure enough at first he truly believed it was the incessant burning of furnaces and their smoke that irritates his lungs to no end. Untill he found out about the crevasse... Turns out they have a crevasse running through the middle of town in which they toss their dead to burn. He had to retrieve a recently deceased party member from there. He quickly jumped to the conclusion he had been breathing dead dwarves all week and pretty much lost it.
i think the dracolich detected an intruder and when he saw the chonky boy he laughted like he hasn't done since he was alive so he's probably an pet who doesn't now it's a pet
I was running Out of The Abyss for the past year, and when me and my friend went to opening day, we saw this dragon and the name and something kept nagging at us. I kept calling him Themberchonk and we were laughing. After we left I looked him up, and I was like "Ohhh fkk! It's him!" The dragon who wanted my player's to bring him a red dragon egg, and my friend decided to keep it and raised it lol. It was probably at that point, a good 8 months since we last thought about him lmao. The DnD movie is 11/10
I think themberchaud is why I stopped using alignments on Creatures back in 3rd edition, since the Dragon dates to the end of 2nd. And I felt here is a dragon with the potential to become good, to grow past their nature. Sure he's greedy, but I actually felt bad for him, and fell in love with him this year with the Chonker version in the movie.
one think i like is his girth and presumably roughly average red dragon strength and durability lets him kind of turn into a living boulder, like we see in the movie, and i could see him kind of leaning into that at least until he gets enough of that fat burned away, pun not intended
Or a possibility where he's not only fat, but incredibly strong. Just look at strongmen and powerlifters. They definitely have some girth to go with the muscle. So he might not even lean out, but could bulk up in muscle which could make him seem leaner when in fact he got heavier due to added muscle mass.
i could see him and bones having a nice pact. he gets to roam and devour any intruders, bones gets to test his enchantments on him and see how they react to a dragon in...no so peak condition.
Dargothoth probably doesn't even see Themberchaud as a threat, so unless they are upset at his presence they might find some use for keeping him around.
Not a threat now, but dragons only grow bigger and stronger and also more resilient to spells over time. Eventually, any red dragon would become too much to handle and turn on his benefactors.

@@mikesemus9773 An ancient red dragon would be a pretty big threat. if he gets to the level of Klauth or inferno, that city is his. The lore ofthe cityhas them kill their dragons whentheyget to older adult level specificaly to stop them growing beyond their control. They think he is threat.
I didn't know about Themberchaud when i saw the dnd movie, so i just thought they added a fat dragon for comedic effect, but it's really cool to find out the lore behind the addition of this absolute unit of a dragon!

I'm enjoying reading what happened in other people's Out of the Abyss games. In the game I ran, the party managed to use Ylsa smuggle the egg out of Gracklestugh to the Paladin of Bahamut's mentor. The plan is that the mentor will raise the wyrmling in the ways of Bahamut, making a good red dragon. Actually, speaking of Bahamut, maybe it could be fun to cover the Talons of Justice in one of your dragon videos. An entire order of dragon paladins? That's an awesome concept! Even if you just focus on their leader Azhaq, that could be a fun video.
my guess is themberchaud is unaware of the creeping doom and likely will not have issues if he does not encroach too much and does not mess with his arcane experiments

My party beat him in Out of the Abyss by conjuring a wall of force in a dome over him, opening downwards, 5 feet off the ground. The rules for squeezing made it so that all attacks on him had advantage, and I’m pretty sure he had disadvantage to attack us too
I’m in an out of the abyss campaign and when I realized Themberchaud was actually in the module (haven’t encountered him yet) I’ve been so so so excited cause all my party members were geeking out about the movie last session.

9th level wizard, cast true polymorph after making some kind of blood pact from themberchaud and explaining his situation. Then aid him in taking over part of the underdark in exchanges for eventually support from themberchauds underground empire in carving out your own on the surface. Then he makes the dark wizards army's arms and equipment as well as grants safe and secret passenge through the underdark and themberchaud gets access to slaves and other resources from the surface as well as his own surface city and palace lair (Dr doom doom Castel style) This arrangement wouldn't last forever but it could be cool for a bit

Same dude, this is why I wanna create a character creation system similar to pathfinder where being Planestouched is kinda like the sub-lineage Like you have a Human (Northerner), Human (Half-Elf), Human (Metropolitan), Human (Infernal). And you could take the Infernal Lineage and apply it to any other playable species. Like an Orc Aasimar or Dwarven Genasi. And then have all the names mentioned for such peoples in a side bar for lore like how the Elves have the Fey'ri (Sun Elf Winged Tieflings) Tales of the Valliant by Kobold Press (basically 5.5e) seems to be doing something like that
Personally, I like the D&D movie but the scene with Themberchaud is agonising for me because there are so many things wrong with it. Dragon biology detailed in the 3rd edition draconomicon reveals that weight gain in dragons is exceedingly rare due to their special organ, the draconis fundamentum. This is the organ that allows their breath weapons, magical spells, and other supernatural abilities (like being able to digest grass and literal rocks for sustenance). Rather than generating adipose (fat) tissue to store energy, the draconis fundamentum converts excess energy into magical/elemental energy. For a dragon to be fat, it would need to be given an obscene amount of food. However the calorie density of ripplebark (see MrRhexx's video on Zundaerazylym) could potential allow that. However dragons prefer meats over other stuff like fungi, and after leaving Gracklstugh I doubt Themberchaud would be finding enough ripplebark or other food to not start rapidly shedding weight. Additionally, dragons are extremely intelligent and cunning. But in the movie, Themberchaud never says a word and acts like a mindless beast which is incredibly annoying to me. To me it's like the party is just facing a very large Otyugh with a draconic reskin. I get that the scene is meant to be humorous or something but its just something that annoys me. Also who is Queen Gugol? Why is she mentioned on some fandom pages but with no sources? And if she does exist in the setting of D&D (which I am beginning to doubt due to lack of evidence), would she be fatter than Themberchaud? And if there are any mistakes in this rant please correct me, I don't want to accidently be spreading false information. :) P.S. yes dragons can literally digest rock, which means yes it is technically possible for Themberchaud to have eaten his previous lair. However dragons find it quite distasteful and beneath them, so its really just a last resort if absolutely starving.
it's most likely that the psionic manipulations of the Duergar affected his physiology and suppressed his "gland", as for the lack of intelligence in the movie version then remember they have Xenk with them, a Paladin, and thus highly unlikely to be willing to make any deals etc due to alignment differences. Themberchaud was also likely in contact with Daurgothoth meaning he could have been magically controlled or compelled, or perhaps the "deal" they struck to let him lair nearby was to aggressively defend the lair Vs any and all interlopers. Plus he's a Red Dragon, well known to be vicious and cruel, most likely he would not bother to converse with humanoids unless they offered him something of value and/or showed extreme magical or martial strength to the point they can directly threaten his life.

I highly doubt the psionic manipulation would affect the draconis fundamentum. If calories aren't being converted into elemental energy, then they wryrmsmith wouldn't be able to use their fire breath, which makes the role pointless. Perhaps they could've weaken it, but still I doubt the duergar would try that given the risk to the economy if it goes too far. And while I understand the absence of making a deal with the party, I would still expect banter during the combat similar to the fights with Brimscythe and Umbrasyl in The Legend of Vox Machina, especially when Themberchaud got stuck in the narrow passageway. And I do like the concept of Themberchaud having a deal with Daurgothoth, however I doubt Daurgothoth has little to gain from it compared to the risk of keeping the red dragon alive. As a dracolich, Daurgothoth could easily kill Themberchaud then add his skeleton to his collection of backup bodies. And Themberchaud's presence runs the risk of drawing attention to the area (since he has to go out and find food) which may attract lawful good paladins could learn of the dracolich and not be very fond of the impending-ness of the creeping doom. And since Daurgothoth has a good horde of magic stuff, Themberchaud has reason to try to backstab him by allying with people who could threaten the dracolich. While such an attempt would be futile against CR 50 Daurgothoth, Themberchaud couldn't read the stat block to know the full extent of his power, and the conflict would still be a nuisance of Daurgothoth. Of course studying Themberchaud (courtesy of emeraldcityelicitor2281) and him being a guard dog could be of use to Daurgothoth, but I doubt that is worth the risk. Magical compulsion is a possibility but unless your DM is very good and has replaced legendary resistance, Themberchaud could end said magical compulsion with said legendary resistance. If there are flaws in my statement feel free to point them out in a constructive fashion (pls dont be harsh ;-;).
@@naturelulI Yup, many well made points, ultimately we have to accept they made the decision most likely simply for entertainment reasons, they wanted Themberchaud in the movie and by picking the same city Daugorthoth lairs in it would be a nice easter egg for Lore fanatics since knowledge of the strongest being in the realm is going to be likely. My head canon for the Psionics is that they are imperfect in their attempts to control their red Dragons and the constant attempts to calm the violent impulses result in some other side effects. Kind of like when you neuter a male cat they tend to become more docile and less active afterwards. So it's not that the gland doesn't work, it just reacts to other changes in Themberchauds body and the end result is The Chonk. Maybe it affects the hormone levels in the creature, i mean who knows it's a magical creature in a game, everything is speculation unless laid out in a lore book. As for any deals made between the Draco Lich and Themberchaud, again we can't know unless some Lore is released about it, but the Lich is stated to know everything that goes on in and around his lair, and he's extremely cool and calculating in his decisions, so it's probably safe to say he knows The Chunky Boi is there. Guard dog, controlled or otherwise, experimental subject, item creation assistant or even amusing curiosity are all valid possibilities, as is the probability that he's not laired in the area and was merely passing through whilst the Lich is deciding what to do about it. I also like the idea that Themberchaud is aware of his "condition" and the danger his lack of flight might cause him in any Dragon vs Dragon fights he may encounter, perhaps he sought out the most magically adept creature in the realms to get help? After all Dragons are well known to be paranoid and being twice the girth of a normal Red Dragon is potentially just as worrying for him as it is adorably cute to us hehe. Best thing about the movie is it opens up so much nerd speculation.
Next edition, we get an entry for Themberchad, Lord of Gains. He's shed off his weight. And now just fist fights everyone, now that his body is the perfect weapon.
I've been looking for a good dragon centered story to run, and after this story I feel like I can give Themberchaud a nice happy ending (unless the PC's realise they are being duped)

You know, when you get past the joke that is Themberchaud's sheer chonkiness, it's actually really, really sad. He's basically a pampered tiger that was kept in a zoo and fed all he could want, and now he's out in the wild. No idea what to do, how to properly hunt, has never met another dragon, and his whole experience with humanoids is either that they're food or that they tried (AND SUCCEEDED) to enslave him. Poor guy. He is going to be lost, paranoid, alone, lashing out, and likely starving. All this for a red dragon, the mightiest of Chromatic dragons, and also one of the smartest and most devious. And then I remember he's a freaking Red dragon, and realize any pity for him is meaningless and killing him at this point would be a mercy.

It's not that Ukotoa (Ukotoa, ukotoa, uKotOa, UkotoA) wants to help Themberchaud avoid heart disease or diabetes, he's just a hater (and if you think there's no diabetes in D&D, just ask the Trickfoot family from campaign 1 - Dungeons & Diabeetus is canon).
I, for one, love Themberchonk. He is the best.
He illustrates a point about encounter design, too: the key to making an encounter with a monster exciting and memorable is _Specificity._ It's not _just_ a dragon, it's a FAT dragon. Your players may or may not remember the dragon encounter plucked straight from the Monster Manual. But they will never forget Chonk the Red Dragon, so thicc his wings could barely carry him aloft for short jumps.
The entries in the Monster Manual are, in the end, stock assets. Raw materials for making your own encounters and dungeons. The scaffold on which to build something truly unique. Even if you add only a single descriptor onto the monster, that's more than enough to spark a really good encounter.

Getting a blade to cut through the dragon's scales is hard enough but getting it past his layer of fat is going to be near impossible. Themberchaud would be a nightmare to deal with. I imagine its like the Kingpin from Marvel Comics was reborn as a dragon.

Bad News Part 2: All that fat under dragonscale makes for very effective natural armor. Themberchaud's tough hide prevents blades from just sliding through without significant force, and his blubber absorbs the force of impact. Good luck getting through all that.
In my out of the Abyss campaign, my players helped Themberchaud figure things out. To get himself out of this situation, he decided, he was going to fake his own death.
It worked out *perfectly* because I had them fight a simulacrum, and the sorcerer finished it with a disintegrate. The keepers were like 'where's the body' and my Sorcerer went "Gone, reduced to atoms." :P
And now he's off trying to take over the jungle. (He's also started working out :P )

A lot of chromatic dragon learn to fend for themselves after they hatch their egg, while flightless and slower he is still an adult red dragon, he will have to be very unlucky to not survive with all the advantages he has.
Another problem with using lava for smithing is that it will introduce impurities, and therefore weaknesses, to whatever you are forging. Dragon fire would presumably not have that issue.
Probably way quicker and more precise too, a skilled dragon could heat just the part that was wanted. Lava could still be pretty good for smelting low-melting ores though, if you can just dip a crucible in a river, but it would have to be a particularly hot lava to melt steel. Would get a bit messy with the rock coating the outside but could be kinda convenient.
If you actually dip whatever you're forging in the lava, yes. But what you can do is use the heat from the lava to make a convection furnace.
dragon fire is also often seen as a magical form of fire and may be necessary in the creation of magical items/weapons/armor
I was thinking that as well throughout the druegar segment (and any instance of lave forging in modules).

Dorgothoth is definitely letting Themburchaud stay there because they provide a unique specimen for magic experimentation. And since Themburchaud also gained strong resistance to Psionics, that strange magic adjacent art that Dorgothoth might want to study as well
yeah i don't see him having too much of an issue with a Dragon as young as Themberchaud being close by unless it ends up bringing unwanted attention. I like the idea of his Psionic resistance being interesting to Daurgothoth for studies and them potentially forming a pact, especially as he likely has knowledge of crafting, metallurgy etc from his time in the underdark which could also be useful.

Out of the Abyss was the first D&D campaign I ever played, and Themberchaud (or Thunderchode as we called him) cemented himself as probably the most memorable character for me without him actually doing anything - because when our party went to retrieve the red dragon egg, the DM rolled a d100 for laughs to see if the egg would start hatching, and the man rolled a perfect 100. Not sure if this is exactly accurate, but we decided that newly hatched dragons behave sort of like ducks in the fact that they instantly imprint upon the first creature they see, and after another roll to figure out who or what that creature was, my character wound up becoming this dragon's dad. After that, we just booked it from the city and played the rest of the campaign with a looming paranoia of "that fat dragon is gonna try killing us this session for sure".
Ah Themberchaud.... i remember in a homebrew version of a game I was in, we freed him, and eventually he came back to help and he turned all that fat into bulk. He went from looking like he did, to looking like a dragon version of Armstrong from Metal gear rising. He didn't need his fire breath anymore to take out demons, he just punched them. (We convinced him that the demons were taking away all of his stuff, and he got pissed. And our PCs didn't care about grakulstug, so yeah. xD)

I can’t imagine Durgathoth even cares about him because it’s not like he’s a real threat. Even if he hit Ancient Red Dragon status, that’s still well below a threat Durgathoth would have to deal with.
Maybe Durgathoth just finds the rotund red dragon flopping around his turf pretending he's hot stuff entertaining. I mean, we all think Themberchonk is funny and memorable, why wouldn't someone in-universe?
My guess is that Durgathoth lets him stay rent free so he can act as a sort of door guard, dealing with any pesky adventurers who wander into the ruins so Durgathoth doesn't have to. (or rather, to provide an additional obstacle before the adventurers get into the undead and traps that he'd have to fix)
@@DarthOmelette Themberchaud must have sought out this place specifically tbh. My guess is he found out they're going to kill him and if you read "Themberchaud's lament" it's clear he's actually quite humiliated and upset by his lot in life. So he decides to waddle over to the most evil and powerful dragon in the setting and begs him to help him exact revenge. Durgathoth may well react to that with indifference, leaving Thember muddling around trying to prove himself endlessly, or indulge him, or view him as a resource like you said.
I played a paladin in the *"Out of the abyss"* campaign.
Using the mushrooms that can shrink your size, I convinced him to come with us and we would help each other to leave the underdark.
We got out and I took him into the mountains to try and shed a few hundred pounds and embrace the way of the swole.
I think he has at the very least 2000 extra pounds to lose.

Got to admit he was rather cute in the latest DnD movie. Put a bow and heart shaped arrows on him and Cupid is now seriously scary.
I think that the dissapperance of the dragon egg MAY BE Themberchaud's doing. Think about it. A pampered dragon learns that there is a plan, maybe not to kill him, but to raise another dragon. A rival. So he influences the Dueregar theivs to steal the egg. That way he won't have to share the spoils with anyone

I played a half-orc paladin who passed through there on his "adventure". Sure enough at first he truly believed it was the incessant burning of furnaces and their smoke that irritates his lungs to no end.

which they toss their dead to burn. He had to retrieve a recently deceased party member from there. He quickly jumped to the conclusion he had been breathing dead dwarves all week and pretty much lost it.
i think the dracolich detected an intruder and when he saw the chonky boy he laughted like he hasn't done since he was alive so he's probably an pet who doesn't now it's a pet
Themberchaud - The Biggest Boi in D&D
I was running Out of The Abyss for the past year, and when me and my friend went to opening day, we saw this dragon and the name and something kept nagging at us. I kept calling him Themberchonk and we were laughing. After we left I looked him up, and I was like "Ohhh fkk! It's him!" The dragon who wanted my player's to bring him a red dragon egg, and my friend decided to keep it and raised it lol. It was probably at that point, a good 8 months since we last thought about him lmao. The DnD movie is 11/10
I think themberchaud is why I stopped using alignments on Creatures back in 3rd edition, since the Dragon dates to the end of 2nd. And I felt here is a dragon with the potential to become good, to grow past their nature. Sure he's greedy, but I actually felt bad for him, and fell in love with him this year with the Chonker version in the movie.
one think i like is his girth and presumably roughly average red dragon strength and durability lets him kind of turn into a living boulder, like we see in the movie, and i could see him kind of leaning into that at least until he gets enough of that fat burned away, pun not intended
Or a possibility where he's not only fat, but incredibly strong. Just look at strongmen and powerlifters. They definitely have some girth to go with the muscle. So he might not even lean out, but could bulk up in muscle which could make him seem leaner when in fact he got heavier due to added muscle mass.
i could see him and bones having a nice pact. he gets to roam and devour any intruders, bones gets to test his enchantments on him and see how they react to a dragon in...no so peak condition.

Dargothoth probably doesn't even see Themberchaud as a threat, so unless they are upset at his presence they might find some use for keeping him around.
Not a threat now, but dragons only grow bigger and stronger and also more resilient to spells over time. Eventually, any red dragon would become too much to handle and turn on his benefactors.
Unless a pact or alliance is made. Wouldn't be surprised if Themberchaud begins to learn spells for creating feasts.

I'm enjoying reading what happened in other people's Out of the Abyss games. In the game I ran, the party managed to use Ylsa smuggle the egg out of Gracklestugh to the Paladin of Bahamut's mentor. The plan is that the mentor will raise the wyrmling in the ways of Bahamut, making a good red dragon.
Actually, speaking of Bahamut, maybe it could be fun to cover the Talons of Justice in one of your dragon videos. An entire order of dragon paladins? That's an awesome concept! Even if you just focus on their leader Azhaq, that could be a fun video.

My party beat him in Out of the Abyss by conjuring a wall of force in a dome over him, opening downwards, 5 feet off the ground. The rules for squeezing made it so that all attacks on him had advantage, and I’m pretty sure he had disadvantage to attack us too

9th level wizard, cast true polymorph after making some kind of blood pact from themberchaud and explaining his situation.
Then aid him in taking over part of the underdark in exchanges for eventually support from themberchauds underground empire in carving out your own on the surface.
Then he makes the dark wizards army's arms and equipment as well as grants safe and secret passenge through the underdark and themberchaud gets access to slaves and other resources from the surface as well as his own surface city and palace lair (Dr doom doom Castel style)
This arrangement wouldn't last forever but it could be cool for a bit

Like an Orc Aasimar or Dwarven Genasi. And then have all the names mentioned for such peoples in a side bar for lore like how the Elves have the Fey'ri (Sun Elf Winged Tieflings)

Not gonna lie, my tired eyes read the name as "Thunderchad" for, like a full ten seconds
When I saw this guy in Honor Among Thieves. I cheered him on because he's a funny chonky boy and he's adorable.
Personally, I like the D&D movie but the scene with Themberchaud is agonising for me because there are so many things wrong with it. Dragon biology detailed in the 3rd edition draconomicon reveals that weight gain in dragons is exceedingly rare due to their special organ, the draconis fundamentum. This is the organ that allows their breath weapons, magical spells, and other supernatural abilities (like being able to digest grass and literal rocks for sustenance). Rather than generating adipose (fat) tissue to store energy, the draconis fundamentum converts excess energy into magical/elemental energy. For a dragon to be fat, it would need to be given an obscene amount of food. However the calorie density of ripplebark (see MrRhexx's video on Zundaerazylym) could potential allow that. However dragons prefer meats over other stuff like fungi, and after leaving Gracklstugh I doubt Themberchaud would be finding enough ripplebark or other food to not start rapidly shedding weight.
Additionally, dragons are extremely intelligent and cunning. But in the movie, Themberchaud never says a word and acts like a mindless beast which is incredibly annoying to me. To me it's like the party is just facing a very large Otyugh with a draconic reskin.
I get that the scene is meant to be humorous or something but its just something that annoys me.
Also who is Queen Gugol? Why is she mentioned on some fandom pages but with no sources? And if she does exist in the setting of D&D (which I am beginning to doubt due to lack of evidence), would she be fatter than Themberchaud?
And if there are any mistakes in this rant please correct me, I don't want to accidently be spreading false information. :)
P.S. yes dragons can literally digest rock, which means yes it is technically possible for Themberchaud to have eaten his previous lair. However dragons find it quite distasteful and beneath them, so its really just a last resort if absolutely starving.
it's most likely that the psionic manipulations of the Duergar affected his physiology and suppressed his "gland", as for the lack of intelligence in the movie version then remember they have Xenk with them, a Paladin, and thus highly unlikely to be willing to make any deals etc due to alignment differences. Themberchaud was also likely in contact with Daurgothoth meaning he could have been magically controlled or compelled, or perhaps the "deal" they struck to let him lair nearby was to aggressively defend the lair Vs any and all interlopers.
Plus he's a Red Dragon, well known to be vicious and cruel, most likely he would not bother to converse with humanoids unless they offered him something of value and/or showed extreme magical or martial strength to the point they can directly threaten his life.

I highly doubt the psionic manipulation would affect the draconis fundamentum. If calories aren't being converted into elemental energy, then they wryrmsmith wouldn't be able to use their fire breath, which makes the role pointless. Perhaps they could've weaken it, but still I doubt the duergar would try that given the risk to the economy if it goes too far. And while I understand the absence of making a deal with the party, I would still expect banter during the combat similar to the fights with Brimscythe and Umbrasyl in The Legend of Vox Machina, especially when Themberchaud got stuck in the narrow passageway.
And I do like the concept of Themberchaud having a deal with Daurgothoth, however I doubt Daurgothoth has little to gain from it compared to the risk of keeping the red dragon alive. As a dracolich, Daurgothoth could easily kill Themberchaud then add his skeleton to his collection of backup bodies. And Themberchaud's presence runs the risk of drawing attention to the area (since he has to go out and find food) which may attract lawful good paladins could learn of the dracolich and not be very fond of the impending-ness of the creeping doom. And since Daurgothoth has a good horde of magic stuff, Themberchaud has reason to try to backstab him by allying with people who could threaten the dracolich. While such an attempt would be futile against CR 50 Daurgothoth, Themberchaud couldn't read the stat block to know the full extent of his power, and the conflict would still be a nuisance of Daurgothoth. Of course studying Themberchaud (courtesy of emeraldcityelicitor2281) and him being a guard dog could be of use to Daurgothoth, but I doubt that is worth the risk. Magical compulsion is a possibility but unless your DM is very good and has replaced legendary resistance, Themberchaud could end said magical compulsion with said legendary resistance.
If there are flaws in my statement feel free to point them out in a constructive fashion (pls dont be harsh ;-;).
@@naturelulI Yup, many well made points, ultimately we have to accept they made the decision most likely simply for entertainment reasons, they wanted Themberchaud in the movie and by picking the same city Daugorthoth lairs in it would be a nice easter egg for Lore fanatics since knowledge of the strongest being in the realm is going to be likely.
My head canon for the Psionics is that they are imperfect in their attempts to control their red Dragons and the constant attempts to calm the violent impulses result in some other side effects. Kind of like when you neuter a male cat they tend to become more docile and less active afterwards. So it's not that the gland doesn't work, it just reacts to other changes in Themberchauds body and the end result is The Chonk. Maybe it affects the hormone levels in the creature, i mean who knows it's a magical creature in a game, everything is speculation unless laid out in a lore book.
As for any deals made between the Draco Lich and Themberchaud, again we can't know unless some Lore is released about it, but the Lich is stated to know everything that goes on in and around his lair, and he's extremely cool and calculating in his decisions, so it's probably safe to say he knows The Chunky Boi is there. Guard dog, controlled or otherwise, experimental subject, item creation assistant or even amusing curiosity are all valid possibilities, as is the probability that he's not laired in the area and was merely passing through whilst the Lich is deciding what to do about it.
I also like the idea that Themberchaud is aware of his "condition" and the danger his lack of flight might cause him in any Dragon vs Dragon fights he may encounter, perhaps he sought out the most magically adept creature in the realms to get help? After all Dragons are well known to be paranoid and being twice the girth of a normal Red Dragon is potentially just as worrying for him as it is adorably cute to us hehe.
Best thing about the movie is it opens up so much nerd speculation.

Themberchaud is literally out there just living his best life.
I've been looking for a good dragon centered story to run, and after this story I feel like I can give Themberchaud a nice happy ending (unless the PC's realise they are being duped)

You'd think the dragons would wise up and realize if their conquest goes wrong their gold would stop coming in. I guess chungus dragon didn't think things through. Too bad for that foolish dragon pride
If Themberchaud could get himself a trainer and stick to a diet and exercise those wings I won’t doubt he could become ThemberCHAD.
Pretty sure the writers heard there was a fat dragon in the lore and just had to put it in the movie somewhow

You know, when you get past the joke that is Themberchaud's sheer chonkiness, it's actually really, really sad. He's basically a pampered tiger that was kept in a zoo and fed all he could want, and now he's out in the wild. No idea what to do, how to properly hunt, has never met another dragon, and his whole experience with humanoids is either that they're food or that they tried (AND SUCCEEDED) to enslave him. Poor guy. He is going to be lost, paranoid, alone, lashing out, and likely starving. All this for a red dragon, the mightiest of Chromatic dragons, and also one of the smartest and most devious.
And then I remember he's a freaking Red dragon, and realize any pity for him is meaningless and killing him at this point would be a mercy.
