I think my favorite part about giant lore is the fact that when they're gods sent a savior to rebuild the giant empire they didn't believe him and killed him so in retaliation giant dad decreed that the next time he sends a savior it will be giant kin not a real giant so hypothetically giant second coming Jesus could be an ogre.

Sounds like my friend’s character Moak. INT of 5 and STR of 20. Ogres are more dumb than skeletons. You could remove their brain, reanimate them, and they would be smarter in undeath than they were in life. At one point, Moak reached apotheosis as it were… his intelligence hit 10… he was suddenly able to formulate coherent sentences, understood the concept of quality versus quantity, and mastered the concept of object permanence! Good ol’ Moak!

That's like if you were poor but decided that you're American so you should get the statistical average income for an American. But you are a specific person, not a statistical variable. So you just get to be poor no matter how American you become.

It's dumb (the way 5e does it) but that's the rules and it's at least simpler. Though, you can't reanimate large creatures anyways, like ogres, so the point's moot anyways
Ogres are so dumb, in my campaign, they're immune to all but the most simplistic con/fast talk attempts. They literally cannot follow the concepts when someone tries a lie more complex than "There's a big dragon hiding behind that hill", and when they get confused, they get violent.

I once outwitted an ogre by telling him that his orc companions stole and ate his birthday cake. And then I gust sat back and watched the carnage as the ogre turned on the orcs. He never had a birthday cake to begin with, but that's besides the point.
The reveal that in older lore being Giant-Kin in some way inherently makes you the tiniest amount Maud leads to an interesting plot idea: Giant Civil War: those who topically cling to the idea of only a 'perfect family' vs those who believe all Giant Kin should be as one- as Anam intended... aka Giant Encanto.
That last segment has to be some of the most darkly hilarious yet depressing thing I've heard. I would hug an ogre. If they didn't try to immediately eat me, that is. Or stomp me. Or both, in either order.

Had an idea for an ogre NPC in my game. Didn't have a chance to implement him yet. Maybe you can use him in your game. If travelling through forest area, they could encounter schdeef treepansha (Steve Treepuncher), an ogre, that is fascinated by the small folk, trying to imitate them. They could meet him "cutting" down trees, meaning punching them until they fall, trying to build a hut out of the "logs". He's friendly and harmless, unless you attack him. However, he is quite smart for an ogre. He tries to do things like the 'smalluns' do, imitating them similarly to how a toddler imitates its parents, with the difference that he can only observe people from afar due to them being afraid of him. So he does his best. If the PCs encounter him more than once, they can see him slowly working his way into making Tools from wood and bone, then stone, and maybe even metal at some point. His creations are always rough and clumsy, but they get the point across, like maybe the very stylish "Shirt" he made, that is more of a Poncho made out of very roughly woven straw, grass or reeds. He is inspired by Steve from Minecraft, after I saw a post of how he would look like translated outside of the blocky World of Minecraft.

They were originally created to fight forces of corruption, explaining their absurd constitution, but a human empire took offense to them and tried to kill them all. That ended up with all ogres cursed to be forever hungry, which lead to them being rather food-oriented. In the modern era of Warhammer Fantasy, Ogres are much smarter than in DnD, and it's not rare to find ogres as smart as humans. Some even live among humans, forgoing eating them in exchange for nice weapons, armor, and other things. There is even a class of Ogre known as Maneaters, mercenaries with a gentle reminder to pay them after a battle, who often take aesthetic cues from their most valued customers and thus can appear (clumsily) with elf-ish garb, dwarf-ish armor, as pirates, or even dressed like vampires. I also would like to highlight that some Ogre Maneaters tend towards 'favored foods' that they like going after. The named example here is Brutogg Corpseripper, who enjoys eating the UNDEAD!
So, how to befriend an Ogre: tell them that you are an Ogre, yourself. Tell them your friends are your food, so don't kill or steal them. BAM! You're now part of an Ogre tribe and have free mercenaries!

I had a Keep full of Hobgoblins and they had some Ogres they kept around for breaking doors down and using in sieges. Having some Ogres as "bodyguards" to the Hob Warchief was a great fight that at one point had a Half-Orc Fighter jumping from a balcony down on top of one of the ogres. Cheap muscle is great.
I just did a session where we were playing the Giantslayer adventure path from Pathfinder 1st edition (which is basically rebranded D&D 3.5 edition), and had to go against a few as well. They are great enemies even for level 7 characters, as you can simply stick some martial classes to them which is what the adventure path did. They hit hard, so you have to take them down quickly or you go down quickly yourself.

For future reference, when talking about the bony bits in one the half-ogre breeds, you can call them osteoderms. This term is used by both biologists and paleontologists to describe bits of bony plate embedded in an animal's skin but are not a part of the skeleton itself. A good example of a living animal with osteoderms are crocodilians (crocs and gators), although with crocodilians they are covered with skin and aren't readily apparent. But I think it's as good a term as any, unless anybody knows of a more accurate term.

8:41 So uh, my nerd moment is that that's a picture of Pudge the Butcher from Dota, interestingly enough, Ogres would have a field day where he resides. Pudge lives/exists on the Fields of Endless Carnage, effectively a cursed zone of permanent warfare, where corpses don't decay or decompose. There's always more bodies appearing. Pudge was meant to effectively cut up every corpse and disembowel it to clean the battlefield, but eventually developed a taste for the bodies, eating them himself instead. "Even those who are beyond fearing the reaper, fear the butcher." If Ogre's lived there, my lord wouldn't they love it. It's an all you can eat buffet and 'club go smash' kinda place.

Yay! More content! 😊😊😊 I am working on a tribe of Ogres lead by a Divine Soul Sorcerer, that is in charge of city building. He heals, feeds, provides them support so they can keep working. The strength they provide goes towards a stone quarry, which sells to the local government for a pretty penny.

A long time ago, in a game far, far away...... I played a 1/2 ogre barbarian with a 5 int. His name was BOB and he was so dim didn't use pronouns or contractions and only spoke in short phrases. "Bob hungry". Someone give Bob something to eat. "Bob fight-y"". Get out of the way. "Bob horn-y". RUN!!!!! This was one of the most fun characters I ever played. It is easy to play a mage with an 18 int, he has probably read the DMG. BOB didn't know anything so I really had to work hard to make his ideas work out. In one game Bob, the mage and the rouge were standing over an open hole. The mage says "I guess we need to go down there. I did a pantomime of kicking in the butt. The mages' player burst out laughing and told the DM, that is exactly what BOB would do. The DM asked "Are you sure?" We both agreed. So the mage took fall damage, said " Thanks Bob." I looked at the rouge and grunted "Next?" And he said "I'll just wait for the rope." It is one of those things that still come up at the table.
I love playing as a Bob, I played a lizardfolk called Hide who was obsessed with eating and didn't understand civilised culture properly. He ate more shoes than Gale from bg3 and thought a tannery was a fancy restaurant.
When you got to the part about Giant-Kin and you said "Firbolg"... it reminded me, if I ever finish my campaign both versions of the Firbolg will exist in my world... The Fairy Firbolg, and the larger red-headed Firbolg. I like them both.
IIRC Storm King's Thunder is about Annam breaking the ordning as punishment. The complacency of not even TRYING to stop the Rise of Tiamat offended Annam so much he basically said "Fine! None of you showed bravery, you let the SMALL FOLK of all things handle the dragons, NONE of you are Maat. Prove which of you deserves respect among yourself!"

I fuck with Half Ogres. So in my campaign rn, in the land of the Giants Jotunheim, I’ve made a faction called “Duh Famly” which is entirely composed of ogres, but more specifically Half Ogres. I leaned more heavily into the fact that they could interbreed with any humanoid, and toned down the dominance of the Ogre gene thru lore evolution stuff. But basically, when other races started flooding in, and after the initial confrontation, they started interbreeding with all sorts of stuff. Tortles, Minotaurs, Loxodon etc. And with the toned down Ogre Genetics, they still lean more heavily into the Ogre side of things, but also have very notable traits from the other race. So gangs of Ogres the size of hill giants with trunks, hyper buff ones with horns and an even shorter temper, and even elemental Genesai ogres are spread across the land, united under a single banner known as “Duh Famly”. Now they work as muscle for hire, being sent out by their matriarchs, the “Mommas”, to do different jobs.
Just a note, Humanoid intelligence vs animal vs beast intelligence are different intelligence scales. Humanoid intelligence is far superior to the equivalent beast or animal.
I've been working on a character who's race could possibly fall under the giant kin category and the commandments segment gave me some great ideas for his lore and reasons to attack said giants or give him a God to defy
I like the conclusion is "Being an ogre is the worse" in D&D. While in warhammer, there was someone who concluded "Being an ogre is the best" as you're to stupid to be unhappy. So a world of war and suffering, is simply a glorious buffet.
When talking about the order of ranks in the Ordening I remember that you said about Ettins being actually True Giants by blood of both Anem and Oatha but were so small in comparison that they got named Small in their language and it's been so long since the old wars with the dragons that the other true giants effectively removed the Ettins from the list of true giants. THey don't even know themselves that they are a true giant. Sad to think about

Pudge lives/exists on the Fields of Endless Carnage, effectively a cursed zone of permanent warfare, where corpses don't decay or decompose. There's always more bodies appearing. Pudge was meant to effectively cut up every corpse and disembowel it to clean the battlefield, but eventually developed a taste for the bodies, eating them himself instead. "Even those who are beyond fearing the reaper, fear the butcher."
If Ogre's lived there, my lord wouldn't they love it. It's an all you can eat buffet and 'club go smash' kinda place.

Yay! More content! 😊😊😊 I am working on a tribe of Ogres lead by a Divine Soul Sorcerer, that is in charge of city building. He heals, feeds, provides them support so they can keep working. The strength they provide goes towards a stone quarry, which sells to the local government for a pretty penny.
@@granitehewer The Sorcerer definitely keeps most of the funds, haha. He loves his Hillbreaker Ogres dearly. Spending 10% costs on solid homes and food first, before storing the excess in the local bank. Ascetic life for him.

Since many giants follow evil and "Good" and "Evil" are kinda equally valid in D&D I think "Maat" and "Maug" would be better translated as "Right" and "Wrong."

A long time ago, in a game far, far away...... I played a 1/2 ogre barbarian with a 5 int. His name was BOB and he was so dim didn't use pronouns or contractions and only spoke in short phrases. "Bob hungry". Someone give Bob something to eat. "Bob fight-y"". Get out of the way. "Bob horn-y". RUN!!!!! This was one of the most fun characters I ever played. It is easy to play a mage with an 18 int, he has probably read the DMG. BOB didn't know anything so I really had to work hard to make his ideas work out. In one game Bob, the mage and the rouge were standing over an open hole. The mage says "I guess we need to go down there. I did a pantomime of kicking in the butt. The mages' player burst out laughing and told the DM, that is exactly what BOB would do. The DM asked "Are you sure?" We both agreed. So the mage took fall damage, said " Thanks Bob." I looked at the rouge and grunted "Next?" And he said "I'll just wait for the rope." It is one of those things that still come up at the table.
I love playing as a Bob, I played a lizardfolk called Hide who was obsessed with eating and didn't understand civilised culture properly. He ate more shoes than Gale from bg3 and thought a tannery was a fancy restaurant.
When you got to the part about Giant-Kin and you said "Firbolg"... it reminded me, if I ever finish my campaign both versions of the Firbolg will exist in my world... The Fairy Firbolg, and the larger red-headed Firbolg. I like them both.

IIRC Storm King's Thunder is about Annam breaking the ordning as punishment. The complacency of not even TRYING to stop the Rise of Tiamat offended Annam so much he basically said "Fine! None of you showed bravery, you let the SMALL FOLK of all things handle the dragons, NONE of you are Maat. Prove which of you deserves respect among yourself!"

MrRhexx: if you ever get tired of promoting the coast company I can recommend diving into Warhammer lore, especially now when Warhammer fantasy has a revival. The company is equally or even worse then WotC but there's a lot of bonkers lore.
Warhammer ogres are such a nightmare. Reading about what happened to the sky tyrants was wild.

They also don't tell you that ogres are like onions, they have layers. They also don't like chatty donkeys and enjoy wrestling and playing hockey.
I find the history of the ogre of Krynn to be quite interesting too, with their "fall from grace" into savagery.

I think Ettins are true giants if memory serves correctly, but at the bottom for being the runt just above giant-kin. Also, "ettin" in Jotun (the giant language) means runt

I fuck with Half Ogres.
So in my campaign rn, in the land of the Giants Jotunheim, I’ve made a faction called “Duh Famly” which is entirely composed of ogres, but more specifically Half Ogres.
I leaned more heavily into the fact that they could interbreed with any humanoid, and toned down the dominance of the Ogre gene thru lore evolution stuff. But basically, when other races started flooding in, and after the initial confrontation, they started interbreeding with all sorts of stuff. Tortles, Minotaurs, Loxodon etc. And with the toned down Ogre Genetics, they still lean more heavily into the Ogre side of things, but also have very notable traits from the other race. So gangs of Ogres the size of hill giants with trunks, hyper buff ones with horns and an even shorter temper, and even elemental Genesai ogres are spread across the land, united under a single banner known as “Duh Famly”. Now they work as muscle for hire, being sent out by their matriarchs, the “Mommas”, to do different jobs.
Ogrillons and Mongrelmen remind me of Omens and Misbegotten from elden ring. The designs and even the general dna evolution vibe are quite similar.
Just a note, Humanoid intelligence vs animal vs beast intelligence are different intelligence scales. Humanoid intelligence is far superior to the equivalent beast or animal.

I'm a bit disappointed you never really talked about how ogre mages fit into things.
I've been working on a character who's race could possibly fall under the giant kin category and the commandments segment gave me some great ideas for his lore and reasons to attack said giants or give him a God to defy
I like the conclusion is "Being an ogre is the worse" in D&D. While in warhammer, there was someone who concluded "Being an ogre is the best" as you're to stupid to be unhappy. So a world of war and suffering, is simply a glorious buffet.

When talking about the order of ranks in the Ordening I remember that you said about Ettins being actually True Giants by blood of both Anem and Oatha but were so small in comparison that they got named Small in their language and it's been so long since the old wars with the dragons that the other true giants effectively removed the Ettins from the list of true giants. THey don't even know themselves that they are a true giant.
