wait does this mean we are having a video for every layer of hell Edit:I wrote this comment immediately as I saw the title of the video when it came out before 20 min of him writing his comment too
Zariel Lore: One interesting detail I often see left out in Zariel's Big Moment attacking devil legions in Avernus, is the fact that she never intended to go to Avernus. She got ready to lead an attack into the Abyss and prepared the then not called Hell Riders for the the dangers of that specific Plane. Yeenoghu tricked her into chasing the demons through a Portal they created which she thought led to the Abyss. Yet it led straight into the then already raging Blood War. The Hell Riders became what they are on accident and many fled back through the Portal led by one of her Officers (which she later permenantly impaled on an Iron Tree in Undeath) Zariel was at her lowest moment in her defeat in Avernus. And thats just an open invitation for a manipulator like Asmodeus. Play Descent into Avernus if you can. Ugh it's so juicy. Great Video!
I'll chalk that up to this being an Avernus episode, and not a Zariel Episode. We could go from every detail of it every character that's relevant to avernus, but between Taimat, Baal, Zariel, all their allies. Oof
I’ve read and watched a lot of Avernus lore, including the details of Zariel, and while your story makes sense from a logical standpoint, I have never heard it before. Can you give a source for this please?
If you can try to get a copy of the descent into avernus module. There's quite a bit of lore in the book and you can always steal or modify some of the events that the book presents to you
I'm DMing a long term homebrew where the players are against agents of one layer, but I'm not going to write down which one it is in case they are spying on me.
I think the fireballs are no longer a thing. They were mentioned in every single edition except 5e, but one of these mentions (I think it was "guide to hell"?) gave an explanation to their origin: the manifestations of Zariel's anger and fury at her imprisonment by Bel (as she was briefly supplanted and imprisoned by him for a little while that the former editions of the game happened during). Now she's free, so the fireballs no longer have any reason to exist and it makes sense that they were omitted.
Anything that goes in depth about each layer is fascinating to me. Knowing the lore about the 9 hells and Asmodeus’ true secret is probably the most engaging lore of all of dnd. Probably the biggest part of it all is that I simply can’t wrap my head around double-speaking and trickery with contracts and such, so hearing all the politics that lead to the hells looking as they do is astounding. I really hope Wizards one day does something with Levistus.
Is it all in my head or there was a series about the lords of the 9 hells? I have faint memory of watching them but i cant find them other than Levistus lord of the 5th layer. Not that I'm complaining. A MrRhexx is always a blessing.
I covered Levistus as part of a promotion with Wizards of the Coast for the release of Dungeons and Dragons: Dark Alliance. I have also done a few solo videos on Asmodeus. This would be my first time doing a 'series' per se on the Nine Hells.
Great video. A few things I have always wondered about Devils / 9 Hells: - What does the process look like to rank up, does a higher devil have to do anything and what does it cost them? - I know time works differently there, is that different for all circles? - How crowded are the hells? could you find wilderness? - More info on what it was like before the war. Honestly I use your Info all the time and you've been a huge help and source of entertainment for me for a long time. Thank you.
On your 4th questions - space on the Outer Planes actually very weird thing that deeply ties into the core philosophy of Planescape and is never really well-explained. All Planes are described as infinite many times, but logistics of this become increasingly weird as you think about it For example, it is said that nupperibos can pop up on any place in Avernus, and devils actively search for them. How can a finite amount of devils scour an infinite plane? Of course, there can be infinite devils (considering how there is infinite Prime Material Plane), but how are they able to be outnumbered by demons then? Now, one must remember that Outer Planes are but manifestations of our thoughts and beliefs, so it's very arcane and strange by design. Infinity of the planes makes sense to me and I could explain it, but my finger hurts You can definitely find wilderness in Nine Hells though. Malbolge, Cania and Stygia have them for days
The process for promoting devils is nasty stuff, and varies based on the type. Per Planescape's book on fiends, erinyes are literally carved into their beautiful shape, and gelugons (ice devils) literally cook for a thousand years in a pit of flame to become pit fiends.
No matter how long i have to wait. No matter how many winters i must endure. One day, when i awake and open my phone, youtube will load, and i will see the title, "What they dont tell you about Bahamut." That day will be a good day.
Perfect timing too, I started running Descent into Avernus as my first major campaign a little over a month ago, and my players are about to enter Avernus in another session or two. Thanks Rhexx!
A friend of my wizard was trapped in Cania and now that we're approaching lv 20, we're preparing to invade the nine hells to free his soul. It's not going to be played, but I will write short stories about it, the best part is we can deal with things outside the mechanics. For instance, my wizard is dabbling with shadow weave to have a backup in case there's dead magic zones that still work with that, the fighter is recruiting an army of giants, we have a couple of other retired character who will be there as a final last mission. So it's super cool you're doing this, because avernus aside, the information about the other layers is sparce and it's more enjoyable to listen to you! Thanks!
@@ForceOfUru as mentioned, it's not going to be a campaign, rather fanfiction. They're characters we've played up until LV 19 now and playing them kinds of loses meaning, I basically have to decide how broken do I want my wizard to be. As an update, Elmìna, my wizard, did some research about shadow weave magic with some other archmage, finding out that the best way to use it is to stick to transmutation and evocation schools of magic and using scrolls to cast. Currently in an Avernus module campaign. I love listening to lore about Avernus. Doesn't spoil anything for me. Just adds to the enjoyment of the adventure.
This is such perfect timing! I am starting a campaign where the party will venture into Hell and I was looking through your videos for info a few weeks ago and now this comes out with even more infernal info. Thank you!
Honestly, going to the nine hells or the abyss is usualy the high point of a campaign for me, be it on tabletop or on videogames. There's so much that can be done with that kind of setting, from showing the average "life" of the denizens is, to finding stuff you'd never find on the material plane without the help of some very powerful and magical people, etc.
This is so perfect! My campaign is building towards a conflict with Asmodeus. The info is much appreciated. I'd love to hear more about how souls are traded and received, and especially how night hags are involved in this!
The timing for these videos is perfect, I’ve been creating a character for a campaign that was raised in the Nine Hells so I’ve been trying to do research on them

I had to pause, hunt down and read that looooong campaign in art form. Beautiful, really do hope that was someone's campaign because it was perfect for Hell.
From what I remember in the "Tyrants of the Nine Hells" book, which had some illustrations used here: The soul shells are tortured *first*, to extract their soul energy, and *then* they're tossed into one of the many "maggot pits" to become converted to lemures.
Best dnd lore content on RUclips, thankyou. As far as what id like to see next I think a deep dive into devils, and the plains they preside over, before covering the blood war, would be better, soo we can truly understand the war to its fullest.
As always, it is a joy to hear from you, oh great loremaster. I suggest that you make videos about each layer (their geography, inhabitants & ruler) and then end the series with the Blood War and how each layer effects the conflict.
My homebrew campaign involves devils heavily. I would benefit greatly from a video detailing how the devils interact with the material plane, what sorts of things might you find them up to, how you might run an interaction with a devil, some examples of deals that might make, and maybe some twists on expectations PCs might find. Thanks for the video!
I wish i could say go in both directions with this thought train, but since you're making me choose, I'm running a campaign right now that deals partially with Avernus, so learning more about the blood war might be really useful - I pick that one!
Yes indeed Long awaited and well worth the wait. Great Content. Once did a campaign Where Zarell.and The former Duke Who seeks to supplant her wer at war, My People Were Aiding Tiamet to take over While they were busy fighting each other. Can only Imagine two dukes and there armies nealry killing.each other, Only To have a sudden big bang in the sky seeing Tiamet amd thousands of Dragons explode onto the scene. (Aided by an army of shadows, and the chosen Of Shar).Yup good times
It's interesting how aspects of mythology get mixed-and-matched. The River Styx causing forgetfulness is taken another river from the Greek underworld Lethe. In order to get into the closest Greek mythology has to a paradise, a soul needed to drink from the River Lethe to forget everything before their death.
Awesome video! I'd love to hear more about the other layers of The Nine Hells and the Archdevils who rule over them, their personality, mandates and schemes.
I want to know more about the blood war, tactics and strategies the fiends use to fight each other. I want to know exactly how Yugoloths fit into all of this.
I did enjoy the video! I feel like you might have touched on the levels of Hell before but I think it would be fun to go in that direction (it's creation, purpose, how it functions, who lives there) and then talk about the blood War.
Avernus is, in my opinion, the most interesting of the Nine Hells. It is one of the most metal places in all of the cosmos. It has everyone's favorite dragon god living there, it has the blood war, a fallen angel fighting in it, and it's the also the place where new devils get created. It has so much going on!
When i ran Avernus my players redeemed Zariel and Mahadi, the Rakshasa, took up the mantle. I had him use illusions and subterfuge to return Avernus to a place of temptation, rather than a plac of war. I did Tyranny of Dragons after that and they went yo Avernus to fught Tiamat and i updated it to reflect these changes in leadership. My players loved it!
Man do I miss the old Skyrim lore play videos or just your elder scrolls lore videos in general . Those were the good old days. I understand why you don’t do that anymore considering the loreplay videos didn’t get a lot of views and you’ve exhausted the elder scrolls lore throughout the years but damn I’d give anything to see some of those videos again.
I hope you're planning to do one for every layer of the hells! (assuming you haven't done any others yet) My campaign is likely to go into Stygia at some point and that would be so helpful because there isn't too much concrete stuff I can find without intense diving into stuff. (Hells, even the Merrenoloth info you mentioned in regards to Styx was unbelievably helpful)
"I'm really proud of it, and I just want you all to see it." There's a genuineness to the self-insert that is a little too wholesome to ignore. Yah done well, Chief.
I think the Blood War was documented a lot in recent years with some D&D books and now video games. Exploring the layers of Hells sound more interesting to me.
Would love to know more about the layers of the nine hells! Hoping in the future you have a chance to talk about Gehenna and the Barghests that live there.
My understanding is that Avernus used to be the lowest plane of Mount Celestial (heaven), but it was invaded by the demons and the gods abandoned it. However, some of the angels rebelled and became fallen, becoming devils and staying to fight the demons.
Nice video. I would love a "travel guide" to the Nine Hells: ways to get there, how to go between layers, how each layer affects people... I know the general description of the layers but they all seem desolate and empty, except for Dis. I would welcome some detail on Dis and the bureaucracy of Hell, but also... What do devils do in the other layers? In Dante's Divine Comedy each layer was where sinners of a specific kind would be tortured, but I don't see this structure in the 9 Hells.
I am hoping to go layer by layer! So our next video will be on The City of Dis in the second layer of Hell.

I want to know more about the blood war, tactics and strategies the fiends use to fight each other. I want to know exactly how Yugoloths fit into all of this.
would LOVE vids that cover all nine layers!! hell adventures are some of my favs
Definitely time to go deeper. Anything that offers clarity to the remaining eight layers would be outstanding.
I would love to see you go in depth more on each layer of the nine hells. that would be facinating
30:30 So what you're saying is I can fix her?
You don't run from the Nine Hells!!! The Nine Hells run from you!!! True for Mr. Rhexx and myself!!!
Excellently entertaining video, as always. Very cool tidbit on Tiamat and the Abishai at the end.
Would love to learn more about the structure and history of devil society. Great content as always, thanks for all the hard work!
Specifically what I would like to hear more about, is everything. In the weekly 30m+ format 😜
We missed you man!
Thanks for the meal and hope you are well.
"I'm really proud of it, and I just want you all to see it."
There's a genuineness to the self-insert that is a little too wholesome to ignore.
Welcome back🎉 your lore videos were missed.
My all time favorite d&d channel is back!
Blood War! Blood War! Blood War!
Best part of the lore, imo
