@@OttoVonBonesmarck Yet being undead poses a problem to the whole offspring aspect. Pretty sure there's a way to undo undeath and that's probably in the cards at some point. Casting off undead and becoming the draconic god of magic would solve the mating and offspring issue.
The fact that Daurgothoth will sometimes leave his lair *just* to go enjoy the company and songs of a beautiful woman is absolutely hilarious, but also gives him an insane amount of depth. This has happened so many times, that lone female bards are warned that the creeping doom might just be sitting down at their campfire. Though it doesn't say he harms them, or even really does anything but listen and converse. Which means, in all, he's still something that can be reasoned with. Which is insanely fascinating to think about.
And since he can be reasoned with, I kind of wonder if he could possibly be willing to take a student? Maybe a PC wizard/sorcerer discovers him in town, and instead of doing anything stupid, engage him in a conversation about magical theory?
@@davidburnett5049 it's more depth than "it's an ancient undead with lots of power and wants to gain even more power because it's evil" which for a lot of plots is the entire villain
Aww. He just wants to be a daddy. Also i live that no one has stoped him because “ya, we know hes evil, but he hasn’t actually DONE anything evil yet. He just…sits there menacingly.”
I mean it's basically the same situation as Japan attacking America during WW2 except in this case people are smart enough not to poke the super powerful enemy that currently isn't bothering you
Mystra: "I refuse to do anything about Daurgothoth, the whole purpose of my servants is them creating as powerful magic as possible" Adventurer: "So he has the thumbs up to make level 10 spells?" Mystra: "Okay lets not get ahead of ourselves here"
10th level spells aren’t banned, you just need to fill out form I10KJ4 in triplicate and submit it for review. Only an ancient Dracolich can live long enough to wait for its approval.
I find it interesting that Daurgothoth seems to lack the typical flaws of a dragon. He's always calculating and knows when to flee. He never lets his nature drive him into unnecessary acts of greed or evil. Perhaps that is what caused him to become so knowledgeable in the arcane, and become the most powerful creature in Faerun.
Those who have power over their own natures are the ones who become the most developed as people. If that development includes accumulating power, then that being can reach untold power.
I love how you talk about how evil and dangerous this guy is and then you describe his motives and he's just. a kinda paranoid and very strong nerd. hell his entire motivation seems to just be like, loneliness? he wants kids and goes out to be around people who wouldn't accept him if they knew his true form. I feel kinda bad for him tbh
I know. In what way is he evil? Yeah he was devious and cruel in the way he handled the cultists that created him, but otherwise he just seems like a lonely magic user. Does he intend to take over the world? What are his motives?
@@MOTat18 honestly if he still had flesh on him he'd basically just be niv mizet but black instead of red. he feels like a guy who's moral is that no matter how much power you obtain it won't stave off loneliness on its own, which is really cool imo
I mean... This dude isn't even actually evil. Or... as evil as he could be. I already had this feeling from the video about the strongest creature in Faerun but he is a chill man. He wants to grow stronger (which in the world of D&D is more then fair). He is kinda lonely and likes to go out to listen to girls sing and does nothing to harm them. He doesn't really mess with anybody since he doesn't need to eat or hunt. He can even create his own test subjects. I like him. Could be a really cool dude to have a talk with... Outside of his lair that is.
Kinda fun random enough, when a giant dragon skeleton shows up, and stops for a talk, then leaves after a little bit. It would also be pretty intense once the players realise what they are up against, and that they don't have a chance to fight him fairly really
His CR indicates that he is powerful enough to fight gods. And the fact that he didn't do so and didn't try to take over countries or even parts of the whole planet shows great restraint of him.
@@Max_G4 Holy hell at CR50 he can challenge any deity and win. Karsus was only level 41 when he accidently one shotted Mystra and destroyed the entire weave for a second. He and Larloch both are legible for being god of magic if the current one kicks the bucket.
Thinking of running a champagne where a party needs to seek his knowledge to stop an oncoming threat and to get him to comply they just help him with is magic and play him some good music, it would be calmer than you think tbh
Wasn't it mentioned in an old video that the Cult of the Dragon was started because its first leader saw a vision of the world conquered by undead dragons? What if that vision was the far future where all other dragons were, over time, replaced by Daurgothoth's children.
Seeing his power level If a party had a choice between fighting Daurgoyhoth or fighting the lords of the Nine Hells, the Nine Hells seems like a much better option
One thing I find interesting is that Daurgothoth is so close to Waterdeep but underground, while in the Iymrith video you said a Blue Dragon named Olothontor lives in the mountains close to Waterdeep. While anyone that played Waterdeep Dragon Heist (SPOILER WARNING) knows that Zelifarn the Bronze Dragon and Aurinax the Gold Dragon both live in Waterdeep. Considering how territorial and solitary I thought dragons were it's interesting so many dragons are so close to each other and never fight each other.
@@faselfasel2864 I suppose you would have to play Waterdeep Dragon Heist that might have the answers...depending on player options, maybe... possibly...it's classified.
@@faselfasel2864 This isn't a spoiler for Waterdeep Dragonheist, but the book does kind of make things a bit easy to misunderstand, but, The dragonward was casted hundreds of years ago. The city had further expanded in those hundred year. So the actual area that the dragonward encompasses is actually smaller than current day Waterdeep. So, there could be dragons that can't go in or out of the area protected by the Dragonward, which is located closer to the heart of Waterdeep, but Dragons can live near and around the area no problem.
I like the idea that the other three dragons know of his existence, but are too fascinated by his experiments to do anything to weaken him. Plus, said experiments occasionally detonate in truly spectacular fashion, which the others find massively entertaining. They often take bets on which thaumatic science project will go horribly wrong, and how so... Once, our intrepid dracolich managed to launch himself into low orbit. Didn't come down for three days. Apparently he'd invented a new kind of oxygen. Don't ask.
So basically when he was a "young" Dragon he felt like he needed more time than a Dragons lifespan can give him to study and research his passion in magic and after he secluded himself and studied Magic for a while he noticed that he was getting lonely because there was no one he could share his passion for magic and his breakthroughs therein with which is why he developed his need for a Family. is this Tldr about right or did I miss something? xD
Over a year ago I made a homebrew group of half-living half-undead beings that serve as beg's and npc's of my campaign (under a Lich bbeg), but I never made an origin story for them. Now I finally have one- they're a part of Daurgothoth's experiment in which he modifies bodies of various species to find a combination that can reproduce despite being undead, find out why that combination works and replicate it on himself.
Legitimately she would probably be the one of the best choices for him to reproduce with. Don’t think she’d ever want to tho until she manages to find her own immortality, she’s too busy lol
Hilarious idea, catch him outside his door when he’s returning from some errand and trick him into firing his anti undead breath at his door golem so it fires it right back at him
Would it reflect the magic, or would it be the golem that get destroyed in the confrontation? Also remember that we are talking about The Smartest Dragon in the world, one that isn't suspect to usual weaknesses of his kin like pride or getting angry.
I know I’ve commented similar things before but man I love imagining the draconic politics of all these powerful dragons in the world. For example Daurgothoth is obviously this ominous looming threat that everyone leaves alone and I would imagine even amongst legendary dragons he’s somewhat of a legend, but he himself likely has his spies in the cult of the dragon monitoring the other dragon’s movements to make sure none of them pose a threat. On the list of those he monitors (at least out of the chromatics) I might suspect the list goes something like this. 1. Klauth (baby killers ain’t gonna kill his babies when he succeeds in having them, also enticing magic that he may want for himself) 2. Tchazarr (powerful enough to potentially rival himself if he lets his guard down plus could interfere with Daurgothoth’s connections to the cult of the dragon not to mention being an actual demigod dragon and having some powerful artifacts) 3. Imvaerno (the only other dragon of known whereabouts who can potentially rival him if he lets his guard down, his innate talent is quite troubling) 4. Mauzzkyl Jaezred (his secrecy and stealth as well as his power is threatening however given his ties to an assassin organization perhaps keeping him on payroll or at least enough treasure to bribe him to walk away is the best defense.) 5. Imyrith (her vast wealth of arcane knowledge and artifacts not only poses a threat but also intrigues him greatly, her work toward self preservation and creation almost seems to mirror his own and given as she already has two children he knows she’s the family type. Perhaps a courtship may be beneficial although must be approached tentatively.) 6. Claugiliamatar (her cunning is infamous and enough to put her on his radar. Also female.) 7. Arveturice (mostly interferes with humanoid populations and doesn’t seem interested in draconic conflict and is more preoccupied with her mourning and maintaining her territory but she’s still monitored for good measure. perhaps her loneliness could be exploited for mating.) 8. Ashardalon (has not been seen for centuries, perhaps dead or perhaps plotting something big, whatever the case he must be ready for it.)
It always comes back to reproduction here, don't it? "Yeah this dracolich is cool, but it really wants to fuuuuck" I missed your videos man, they really are impeccable quality. Love the work, and every video is a day brightener! Thanks for the lore videos.
He doesn't seem to have any evil intentions. His goal seems to be just learning everything and creating more magic. He doesn't go out and attack cities, he has no plans to conquer the world or create undead armies to wipe out humanity. He just loves all things magic and wants to perfect the ones already established, while creatining his own. He enjoyed going out and listening to people (specifically women) play music, but while he is lonely (and a powerful dragon, so he could pretty much do whatever he wants and no one could stop him) he NEVER harms them. He wants descendants, but is also aware that might not be a good thing for the world. I have an undead/reanimated character who would LOVE to chill with the dragon.
My favorite dragon/undead. He is so fucking badass, and so interesting. But I have to say, I'm surprised his INT isn't higher. Given how big of a magical genious he is, 23 INT seems low.
They borked that up. But look at Drizzt Artemis and Jarlaxle... Their stats and levels and even classes are basically 30% correct if lucky. They never do a novel character justice. Ever.
@@MrHarrystank You make good points, but I'm not entierly convinced. I still think he should be on par with say, Acererak and Tasha, who both got 27 INT. But to be fair, 23 INT is still insanely smart. Anything above 20 in any stat is super human. 18 INT is already genious intellect.
@@MrHarrystank just wanna say. Love your name and agreed. Also the old trope that humans do so much in such little time while elves functionally immortal(old age just go to evermeet) take forever to do the same , throws another wrench in the intelligence assumptions etc.
I love every nuance of his personality, I really do. But oddly, all I could think about was the mechanics needed to achieve his goal that he's missing. I think Duargothoth would benifit greatly by understanding, or working alongside a Druid.
I wonder what Tiamat thinks of Daurgothoth? Don't their end games directly counter each other? Does she know better than to annoy him or attempt to go after him, knowing he could just teleport into Avernus and cause major problems? Maybe he's aware that Tiamat is for all intents and purposes, stuck in Avernus and isn't really a threat and he knows well enough not to piss of Asmodeus?
Tbh, I have no doubts that if he really wanted to, he could easily start a cult powerful enough to truly challenge Tiamat's power I'm faerun, and probably accend to godhood.
@@mackenziemoore5088 Cronos is CR56 creature and he can slay lot of gods. With CR50 Daurgothoth most likely able to slay some deities albeit not on the scale of Cronos. Imo Daurgothoth is just like Acererak, an undead strong enough to become a god but choose to become nerd and doing research.
Hes probably more powerful than Asmodeus at this point. But the irony is, he doesnt really wield his power to do any harm or mess with anything, hes just getting stronger for the sake of it. And anybody that knows him will have no interest to make him an enemy, as that would be absolutely foolish.
@@mardshima2070 CR is just a measure of how difficult he is to be defeated in accordance to party. while he is more difficult to kill than most gods because of his self preserverance abilities and measures, being a god or not is a different thing entirely
I'll grant you that Daurgothoth is comparable to, and maybe even stronger then Tiamat, but Asmodeus is a different story. With his Ahriman origin, his true form is unquantifiably powerful to the point of reshaping the great wheel, and the status of Greater deity comes with a ridiculous amount of hack abilities. If a greater deity fights a creature that has equal ability scores, hit points, armor class, and average DPR, the greater deity wins by a landslide due to divine skills
Now I gotta ask. What attributes does he look for in a mate? Does he even have romance as a requirement? What are the actual conditions for him to successfully reproduce? …. If he gets powerful enough would Mystra or Shar be compatible? 👏 we 👏need👏 answers👏
My thought: 1. In case of a servant rebellion or losing servant control to other lich 2. In case, other Dragolich seeking to follow his footstep and looting his knowledge 3. In case his supposed progeny ever betray him 4. Just plain cleaning, he did had a bone spewing breath that turn thing to undead. Having too many undead, is creepy and bring unwanted attention. He might went for a spring cleaning after a battle😂
Have you ever considered making a collection of very powerful creatures in one book? We play very high level campaigns and use 2C Gaming's Epic character advancement and are always looking for the next big bad. Daurgothoth needs something from another plane, doesn't want to leave his lair and contracts the Epic PC's. Of course its a double cross in the end, but game on!
In Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark, there is a Dracolich in the Underdark named Vix'thra. It had the same draconic stats to Daurgothoth but without the wizard and archmage levels. I wonder if it was inspired by Daurgothoth.
That actually gives me an idea for a short game if you find yourself with only one player available for whatever reason. Just a lone wizard who's been trying to find this ancient dracolich, following his movements and interests, all to request to study under him. He initially isn't willing, but he could use another skeleton for his phylactory room, and offers his tutelage if the player can bring him another dragon skeleton. Cue an adventure looking for the burial sites of dragons, searching for a skeleton for this dracolich so you can learn at least a portion of his secrets. Why would you go to such lengths? Do you seek power to annihilate your enemies, or to protect the ones you love? Are you searching for the ability to gain wealth and influence in the world? Or are you just an avid learner, fascinated by all the nuances of spellcraft and determined to study whatever you can?
Legit was looking for a lore video on this dracolich (my favorite dracolich/dragon character in all of d&d) like yesterday and the day before. Wicked timing!
God frickin dang in. I have to buy Monster Classes Three, and I'm excited for the updates to the previous two. I've made a Ghost character for some Solo play, and in a game I've played a bronze dragon masquerading as a Kobold revolutionary with who also moonlights as a vigilante a-la batman, but as a Kobold, but as a dragon. Very fun work. Also holy fuck Daurgothoth is stupid strong, AND he's got the backing of a god of magic who is maybe the most important god of the pantheon because each time her previous forms died the world ripped itself apart. Added that he's a dracolich and I really cant think of how players without the most convoluted and deus ex machina filled plan
Man, this gave me so many ideas for a BBEG I've been building. The idea of a creature dedicated to the study of magic, capable of warping it to its will is amazing.
What the hell, second video in such a quick succession, and Daurgototh at that? You aren’t holding any punches, I am extremly happy we get in depth video about this dracolich, but expected we will get few other chromatic/metalic ancients first.
The 2nd Edition "Cult of the Dragon" book had pretty good content, including some very memorable dracoliches (Daurgothoth is one, but Aurgloroasa the Sibilant Shade is also pretty cool). What makes Daurgothoth so special is his ambition. Dragons often seem to have no higher goal than the acquisition of food and treasure. The Creeping Doom's constant attempts to improve his own nature makes him original and impressive.
I've used the Creeping doom in a one shot campaign and as a D&D story in one of my webcomics, where a group of players absolutely destroy him with extreme cheese tactics in addition to his weakened state after the spell plague got rid of Mordenkainen's disjunction and ruined his signature spell, which I'm shocked you didn't mention in this at all since you clearly weren't focused on the current Daurgothoth, and you did mention it previously. Gooood ol' Bonemelt. So, in his current state in 5e, he's at his current weakest point since so much of magic changed again, forcing him to have to redo a lot of work and even relearn spells that have changed. Studying magic must be a real pain when people keep messing with or killing the person in charge of the weave.
Pretty sure the only real thing which was messed up by the spell plague for him was for starters Mage's Disjunction and his ability to change spells to the different elements at will considering that their mechanics have completely altered.
Hey, truly appreciate your videos and the work you do. There is in dragon#359 a time dragon with a CR 90 at Great Wyrm. But they're so rare that it means nothing. Thanks again!
Personally I find The Immortals Handbook to be a piece of satire. You can't take a book seriously when it contains both dragons whose breath makes you never born, and also a Greater Three Weapon Fighting feat.
Needs to be voiced by Vincent D'Onofrio channeling his Criminal Intent persona and getting in peoples face "oh may I just ask...WHY WERE YOU PLANNING TO BETRAY ME AND STEAL MY GEM"
I do, in fact, follow your videos religiously and was super excited to get another video about this dragon he is in my opinion the most interesting entity in D&D
While watching this I realized it is so important for Daurgothoth not to become widely know is because the second word spreads outside the material plane he'll have an army of Inevitables after him.
It would be absolutely badass to see any of these ancient named dragons show up in the dnd movie. I feel like inferno might be the most likely since he has such a massive hoard and is just an absolute brute force of nature. But I’d take any of these awesome baddies.
If and when, I start DM'ing again, instead of just consulting, this guy will show up at least for a cameo, in "my world.". And you can believe that he will have recently mastered that breath weapon that ruins magical items! Heck! I might even add a "bonus" where if the player fails the saving throw badly enough, the item will explode, causing AOE damage within a small area! If I wanted to be super brutal, I'd give him 2-3 lich "apprentices" that would join any battles that their master called them to. But I've always ran campaigns where there's so e NOCs and such, that you're just never gonna completely best!
I have never touched anything DnD related and I love this kind of stuff. Thanks for making this video I dont even know where Id have to go to find this kind of lore lol
12:45 Wait.... wait are you telling me, that a fictional character who were doing the "store my soul inside an object to make oneself immortal"-thing _actually_ did the smart move by simply making their soul-shard completely dull and unremarkable? Dang, I like this dragon! Voldemort, you should have taken note!
Fucking Perfect! I've been obsessed with him ever since seeing your first video that mentioned him. I love how much you've researched, highly enjoyable
So happy you did this one. He is the big bad in my current game. In my game, he is attempting to summon Tiamat using the dragon masks. He plans to usurp her during the summoning, taking over the avatar and place the back dragon head in the centre. I have his layer on Selûne as he has no need for atmosphere or food.
Currently running a very heavily modified rise campaign with a fair degree of power scaling for my players. They've had the name drop "creeping doom" dropped on them last session. Two are blissfully unaware, while the third said "I can't remember why, but I've hard of this name before, this going to be bad". This video is great for helping to plan out things, trying to scavenge hunt info from third edition and forums has been a nightmare.
Great video, it helped me find something that I was looking for for the past two years. I sincerely hope that there would be a video about Arauthator too. If I remember correctly, he appears in few novels, one 5e adventure and some old edition books.
Clearly he's so powerful so he can give quests to aspiring hero adventuring parties without them successfully being assholes and just stealing the quest rewards by any means necessary without doing the quest. He can show up at campfires or the tavern halls where they meet and he's close enough to the majorest city in the main questing zone without being obvious enough that they'd have to go through a bunch of yesmen flunkies to reach the guy and start a coup or whateverthefuck. He is a dungeon master's best friend to use without outright pulling the card of "ohh he's totally unkillable because i said so now do the dang quest please" while still staying in character for the game's world.
It’s pretty cool that they put so much effort into making this dude such an imposing threat while creating the strongest named monster. It could’ve easily have made a stat block that’s busted to all hell in back like a poorly made homebrew. The added lore and depth sells why he’s allowed to be this strong. But holy fuck he’s basically got meta magic at will that’s so busted.
I'm not sure where I should send this to. but I will just write it here. I have an idea for a hag Class. Instead of spell slots it uses a modified spell point system (found in DMG page 288-289) that works a bit like The Deva class's Holy Energy. instead of getting all the points back on a long rest, it gets very few points back again once a day. in return, it can get points back every time it ruins someone else's day, and either have a very high point cap or have none. if you have plans to improve the Familiar class I have some suggestions for some sub-classes. 1. and 2. there should be a Fiend subclass that focuses on debuffs, and a Celestial subclass that focuses on healing and protection. 3. and 4. there should also be an Aberration subclass that focuses on Lovecraftian horror and Mindfuckery (effects such as charmed, frightened, Madness, Compulsion, Confusion, and other things that are playing with people's psyche), and an Undead subclass that focuses on lifesteal and a bit on debuffs. 5. and 6. there should also be an Elemental subclass that focuses on Elemental protection and improving their ally's Elemental damage, and a Fey/Plant subclass (other than the Pixie) that focuses on Druidic magic. 7. an Ooze and/or Construct subclass would be nice but I can't think of anything that those subclasses would focus on specifically.
You just gave me the perfect entity to include as one of the big Players in my campaign. And he's even located his home in the perfect location. In my campaign, Waterdeep is kind of a Hotspot for the undead, having even undead guards in the form of an entire company of Death Knights, a group of 100 disgraced Paladins, who, after they failed to protect Waterdeep from a Green Dragon, decided to become Death Knights, to protect the City forever more. Most of them lay dormant, burried in the Graveyard, with a few staying awake, "living" amongst the citizens of Waterdeep in disguise. Their Captain is a member of the City guard, appearing as an old, gaunt, bearded man, and as far as any of the guards are concerned, he "just always has been here". If the City should ever be in grave danger, one bigger than the living could handle, he and the others would blow in their enchanted Horns, waking the other Death Knights to Battle. The main Plot of my campaign being, that a foreign deity has been stranded on Toril, which now tries to regain its power by undermining the native deities and absorbing their power and basically plans to cast a spell akin to _Karsus' Avatar_ during a convergence, with the goal to usurp some of Torils deities and steal their power to become a full deity again, cross the breach between worlds, taking all of Toril with them and merging it with their own plane. I think I'll use Daurgothoth as a sort of helpful NPC to give them a little shove in the right direction at some point.
> "almost nobody even knows this dragon even exists" > "Hey btw, cute lady bard, if you ever see a lone male human that could be Daurgothoth trying to bang you."
OH MY GOD! mrrhexx you are the best! in one of your earlier videos i said to you that i’d love vampire as a monster class because they are my favorite monster, you are probably my favorite d&d content creator!👍
There's a lot of monsters that I heard of that have me backing up and say nope without my party but this.... This has got to be one of the only monsters I see that would probably have me saying no in general.
You know whose cooler, more awesome, amazing, and much much eviler than daurgothoth? Aumvor! You should talk about that guy. He deserves his own video, no two. That’s just my unbiased opinion anyways, that’s in no way self-centered.
I feel like Daurugototh would make more sense in an adventure as something like a force of nature. This ancient, immensurably powerful and knowledgeable evil entity that's not exactly out there doing evil, just studying magic and growing his power for his own bizzarre goals, but if left alone he's not gonna be a bother for anyone in the next millenia. The players somehow become aware of this entity, and have to seek it in order to acquire some long forgotten piece of knowledge or magic, and in doing so have to thread carefully, as this godlike being is more than capable, and also more than willing to end their lives in a second if what they offer is not worth its time. Or even better, centuries ago a group of legendary heroes managed to slay the dragon, but failed to find and destroy its phylactery, maybe it remained hidden due to special defenses put in place by the dragon itself, and was just collected as treasure. It survived, but is now trapped inthe gem indefinately, and eventually the gem gets to the players, as some form of cursed item, or just a magic item, where the dragon lends them a bit of its power while tryibg to get them to give him a draconic body, so he can come back to its form and resume his magical studies. That sounds like a plot
"you must admit, thats creepy" "that might be, but we dont arrest people for being creepy" ***awkward silence nearby, followed by a hasty spoken message*** "do you remember the person we locked up a while ago?" "the creepy one?" "yeah. better let them go"
I ran dungeon of the mad mage and the party encountered him. They were in a field of bones in an underground cavern, the paladin saw a giant skull and with a successful check concluded it belonged to a tarrasque. Then a large shadow slowing crawled along ground from behind them. The party loved him and decided to play matchmaker for him and set him up with a nice lady chromatic dragon. They care far more about a dracolitch's love life than whatever the main story is to the point that they get excited to see a dragon. I think it is fun, it helped them do more roleplaying and diplomacy as they try to investigate whereabouts of dragons and how to simultaneously not get killed by an evil creature while persuading it to go on a date with this apocalyptic horror that they happen to know.
Is it weird that I kinda just wanna sit down to share some donuts and coffee with this dragon/lich/demigod to chat about magic and stuff? I mean, I definitely shouldn't, he would no-doubt find me incredibly dull and being anywhere close to this being, even with no ill intent whatsoever, would most likely be extremely dangerous.... ...but still.... =)
The world would end, lol. Imagine someone with his outrageous set of spells and then add up to 13th level spellcasting. There would be no Toril anymore because my man will accidentally blow the planet up while working with his spellslots.
Ya this Dragon is such a good villian and so powerful I can't even think of playing a character long enough to fight him and find a party that had characters strong enough as well.
It's quite ironic that he Daurgothoth has all that god-killing potential, but instead just researches more magic in order to keep himself safe, and correct an Undead's inability to reproduce. As if he built himself an incredibly powerful character, but then realized that he would have to give it all up in order to get that one specific ability he wants. Stubbornly trying to find a work-around.
“Whoa, a Gnomish city? That’s super neat, I’ve never seen a-why am I looking at Dark Souls 1 concept art?” *”He is a BIG fan of things jumping out of the darkness and stabbing you”* “Ohhhh!”
An absolutely fascinating item. I'd like to ask, if a creature like this were to challenge Tiamat, what would happen? Her portfolio is evil dragons, but he's undead, and 🤷
Loved the video as usual. I remember that older video when you touched briefly on the strongest dragons so it's great to go so in-depth. I know you have a crazy schedule for videos/ideas you're working on but have you ever though about discussing the Lady of Pain down the line?
I hope you make one about Klauth as well. The Red Dragon. Together with your Iymrith video, this one and so it would make for a great preparation for any one running SKT.
🤣🤣🤣 thank u for finally putting into contex5 for me exactly how bad my worst GM ever screwed up when we out negotiated him. So we were playing Pathfinder n j had joined an ongoing game at 8th level n the game died out when me n the cohort were at 12th, the fighter was at 13th n the rogue at 14th. I can't remember when exactly it happened but somewhere in the middle of that so about 10th-12th level. Can't remember if we skinned the dragon we killed in the chasm fight or if we just found these in a chest but we had a lot of dragon scales n needed a rich town to sell them in. So we flew their in our airship n found a guy n started negotiating. Our GM was offering 100,000 but we haggled him up to 200,000 when he asks if we r splitting it evenly n we say yes. So he says "Add 50,000 Platinum each..." but he is cut off by all 3 of us screaming "PLATINUM!!!!" He tried to back petal it but we hadn't spoke in character so we made him stick to it. We all got something enchanted while in town n bought a bunch of magical items. The rogue was our leader n gave half his money to fund our ever growing fleet of airships. But by the end of it we were all still filthy rich. Only now seeing that we bargained out of a random vendor double wealth (minus those items i don't have time to google the values of) of the hoard of a dragon who is the most powerfull creature in Faerun. Thank u so much. I've been telling that story for yrs but never had such perfect context to give people. Thank u soooooooo much.

I suppose he gets frustrated when he can't find workarounds to magical limits so he just goes to a bar to drink and listen to music.
Fascinating... yeah, but I've heard the greatest evils don't appear as monsters, they show up as familiar forms.
And since he can be reasoned with, I kind of wonder if he could possibly be willing to take a student? Maybe a PC wizard/sorcerer discovers him in town, and instead of doing anything stupid, engage him in a conversation about magical theory?
I wouldn't call it an insane amount of depth but its pretty cool and a nice touch by the writer
@@davidburnett5049 it's more depth than "it's an ancient undead with lots of power and wants to gain even more power because it's evil" which for a lot of plots is the entire villain

I mean it's basically the same situation as Japan attacking America during WW2 except in this case people are smart enough not to poke the super powerful enemy that currently isn't bothering you
Is that really evil then? We think he is, but he hasn't done anything. Dude has evolved past others of his kind, and their petty thoughts. :)
he became a dracolich so he’s definitely evil
I love how he became a lich so he never had to leave his lair to eat or drink or even breath, but he will 100% leave for a good song from a bard

He gained so much power by becoming a bone dragon. But in return he lost the Most important bone in his life. The classic case of hubris.
Perhaps that is why he chose to become a dracolich in the first place, to be free of the demands of the flesh

Daurgothoth is just the dracolich version of Sean Connery's character from Finding Forrester.
Yeah him and larloch are douches. They've killed millions 😉. Definitely assholes no matter what.

So the stongest monster in Dungeons & Dragons is a Dragon in a Dungeon. Go figure
Wasn't it mentioned in an old video that the Cult of the Dragon was started because its first leader saw a vision of the world conquered by undead dragons?
What if that vision was the far future where all other dragons were, over time, replaced by Daurgothoth's children.
Wow holy crap....
What if it wasn't a vision what if it just just a dream...
What? Dragons live in waterdeep? How do they get around Aghairons Dragonward?
@@faselfasel2864 I suppose you would have to play Waterdeep Dragon Heist that might have the answers...depending on player options, maybe... possibly...it's classified.
@@faselfasel2864 This isn't a spoiler for Waterdeep Dragonheist, but the book does kind of make things a bit easy to misunderstand, but,
The dragonward was casted hundreds of years ago. The city had further expanded in those hundred year. So the actual area that the dragonward encompasses is actually smaller than current day Waterdeep.

Interesting... wow...
If Iymrith manages to become a Wraith Dragon, maybe they can make undead babies together.
Your mind is a terrifying labyrinth
He can't, he's a skeleton. Has a Halloweenie

Sounds funny... Question is... How do you achieve that shenanigan?

1. Klauth (baby killers ain’t gonna kill his babies when he succeeds in having them, also enticing magic that he may want for himself)
2. Tchazarr (powerful enough to potentially rival himself if he lets his guard down plus could interfere with Daurgothoth’s connections to the cult of the dragon not to mention being an actual demigod dragon and having some powerful artifacts)
3. Imvaerno (the only other dragon of known whereabouts who can potentially rival him if he lets his guard down, his innate talent is quite troubling)
4. Mauzzkyl Jaezred (his secrecy and stealth as well as his power is threatening however given his ties to an assassin organization perhaps keeping him on payroll or at least enough treasure to bribe him to walk away is the best defense.)
5. Imyrith (her vast wealth of arcane knowledge and artifacts not only poses a threat but also intrigues him greatly, her work toward self preservation and creation almost seems to mirror his own and given as she already has two children he knows she’s the family type. Perhaps a courtship may be beneficial although must be approached tentatively.)
6. Claugiliamatar (her cunning is infamous and enough to put her on his radar. Also female.)
7. Arveturice (mostly interferes with humanoid populations and doesn’t seem interested in draconic conflict and is more preoccupied with her mourning and maintaining her territory but she’s still monitored for good measure. perhaps her loneliness could be exploited for mating.)
8. Ashardalon (has not been seen for centuries, perhaps dead or perhaps plotting something big, whatever the case he must be ready for it.)
It always comes back to reproduction here, don't it?
"Yeah this dracolich is cool, but it really wants to fuuuuck"

literal opposite to krakens, which want to do anything other than bang, but just can't help it
when you are so powerful that even Mystra is your pal, maybe having children is the next best thing
He should be a INT 30
@@MrHarrystank just wanna say. Love your name and agreed. Also the old trope that humans do so much in such little time while elves functionally immortal(old age just go to evermeet) take forever to do the same , throws another wrench in the intelligence assumptions etc.
The absolute maximum was 25, since the stats are for 2E. You probably want to change the stats if porting to a different version.

New plot hook: your band of adventurers seek to set Daurgothoth and the undead goddess Evening Glory up on a blind date
So he is basically the dragon version of ainz from overlord
For the strongest creature in Faerun, he sure developed a lot of anti-undead abilities

Is there something we don't know?
My thought:
1. In case of a servant rebellion or losing servant control to other lich
2. In case, other Dragolich seeking to follow his footstep and looting his knowledge
3. In case his supposed progeny ever betray him
4. Just plain cleaning, he did had a bone spewing breath that turn thing to undead. Having too many undead, is creepy and bring unwanted attention. He might went for a spring cleaning after a battle😂
This one is truly magnificent. Looking forward to this one. What a creature.
I second this!!!!
I'd love to hear you cover Ashardalon the dragon that fused with a Balor
I missed your videos, dude. Thanks for _"being back"_ and sharing your passion. 😎
Added that he's a dracolich and I really cant think of how players without the most convoluted and deus ex machina filled plan
fell in love with this channel initially for the dragon lore videos,, absolutely LOVE that you’re doing individual dragons now!!
He seems like he needs a friend.
As a Bard I volunteer as tribute.
Oh gods, the idea of a dracolich being "trapped" by unknowingly reforming into the skeleton of a psuedodragon may be my favorite headcanon.
Dracolich: "I'm back, mortals! Fear me-.... aww, dammit."
Wizard: "I'm so gonna make you into a familiar."
Afaik if the pseudodragon's skeleton somehow can actually hold the dracolich's soul it will transform into the dracolich's original body.
@@mardshima2070 Aww, that's less fun.
@@Alexrider02 Wizard: "Aww, dammit."
I’m pretty sure he survived the spell plague with ease and was relatively unaffected by it
Pretty sure the only real thing which was messed up by the spell plague for him was for starters Mage's Disjunction and his ability to change spells to the different elements at will considering that their mechanics have completely altered.
Wait, belay that, I glossed over your reference to Dragon Magazine. I'm going to guess they were likewise going tongue in cheek with that one.

This guy would be perfect for a Undying Warlock.
Thanks for all this info it’s helping me make a campaign based on finding and defeating him cause he now knows how to reproduce
You should also cover the dracolich Dragotha. He is the herald of Kyuss, the worm that walks
So bad ass! I want to run him in a game. Not as an end boss as he would kill any adventuring group, but as a social encounter. Oh man is he cool.
CR 50?! I had no idea you could even go that high!

On top of all of this guy's resistances and defenses, he can move in stopped time. I was not expecting to find a jojo reference here.
OH MY GOD! mrrhexx you are the best! in one of your earlier videos i said to you that i’d love vampire as a monster class because they are my favorite monster, you are probably my favorite d&d content creator!👍
thats just the magic items we know about, like many mage types Daurgothoth also creates potent mystic items
So the best way to take him is to be a Bard.
He likes music. And he’s looking for offspring. - right up the bard’s alley.
What a bold and smart dragon I wandered what the other dragons are like.
There's a lot of monsters that I heard of that have me backing up and say nope without my party but this.... This has got to be one of the only monsters I see that would probably have me saying no in general.
We get like no level 20+ missions and this would be a great villain for a 20+ adventure!
You know whose cooler, more awesome, amazing, and much much eviler than daurgothoth? Aumvor! You should talk about that guy. He deserves his own video, no two. That’s just my unbiased opinion anyways, that’s in no way self-centered.
The most underrated lich in dnd. He has 206 phylacteries and he can use epic magic.
Another video about ancient dragons let’s go.
Point of fairness, all you'd need to offer em is some gold and a pretty bard lady play a nice tune for him kekw.
I’ve been planning a Waterdeep campaign and this continental fellow definitely needs to feature in it somehow.
"you must admit, thats creepy"
"that might be, but we dont arrest people for being creepy"
***awkward silence nearby, followed by a hasty spoken message***
"do you remember the person we locked up a while ago?"
"the creepy one?"
"yeah. better let them go"
I'd love to study under him and learn his arts also this dracolich is the ainz oal gowns of D&D
i'm pretty sure this is the channel where i learned about Daurgothoth, so yeah, let's here what you didn't tell me. :P
I wonder what it would look like if you took Inferno's raw magical power and combine it with Daurgothoth immense knowledge of magic.
That’s super neat, I’ve never seen a-why am I looking at Dark Souls 1 concept art?”
*”He is a BIG fan of things jumping out of the darkness and stabbing you”*
“Ohhhh!”
I beg you to make a video like this about Themberchaud, my chonky boi deserves more love
My man just wants his special equipment back.
